RED SONJA Covers!

Oh, my lord.

I had this fun idea. There had never been, to our knowledge, a major launch of an iconic character, where all the covers and variants had been drawn by different female artists. Lots of talented women do amazing covers, but no one could remember ALL the covers and variants done by ladies.

So I pitched that idea to Dynamite with the Red Sonja relaunch, and publisher Nick Barrucci, who is kind of wonderful, picked up on it right away. He asked me to make a dream list of artists, my favorite female artists, and he would take a look to see if they were available and interested.

They were interested.

So I asked some of my friends and Nick asked some from the list that he knew and before you knew it, Amanda Conner, Fiona Staples, Nicola Scott, Stephanie Buscema, and Colleen Doran were all already on board. Holy CRAP. I can’t explain to you how happy that makes me.

Some were under exclusive, like the mighty Nicola Scott, and she was able to get an exemption. And she loved drawing Sonja so much she actually did TWO covers because she couldn’t help herself.

Colleen and Fiona turned in EYE-POPPINGLY amazing covers, mind-blowing work.

Turns out? Almost all of them were closet Red Sonja fans and WANTED to draw her.

So, as a bonus, we are getting the best artists around drawing these incredibly moody, sexy, scary and wonderful covers of the best barbarian ever. I am SO HAPPY.

The good news is, we are only getting STARTED. I got a ton of emails and meetings at the last two cons where great female artists, some of them Eisner and Harvey winners, came up and told me they wanted in for SURE. Many went ahead and did the sketches anyway, without even being asked, just to show what they could do.

So imagine this, right now, I have something like ten sketches, everything from rough breakdowns to full color pieces, of Red Sonja, by some of the top artists in the business, WHO DID THEM EVEN WITHOUT BEING ASKED.

I freaking love my job.

I can’t wait for you to see who else is coming aboard. Odds are, if it’s a name female artist you love, we are hoping to get her aboard, maybe we’ve already contacted her, including some names you would NEVER expect to see on a Red Sonja cover. It’s just a huge show of support and talent and oh, my god, so much fun.

One of my favorite little moments of the Emerald City Convention was during a Dynamite panel. My friend, the brilliant artist Francesco Francavilla, when he heard the list of names doing covers said, “I am going to change my name to Francesca so I can do a cover for Gail’s book.”

You might have to hear that in an Italian accent, but it made me smile huge.

A few years ago, something like this would not even have been possible, really. Now, it’s not only possible, but the industry embraces it.

THIS MAKE ME JOY.

Hey! I just saw your post about the new TR, and yeah, I totally agree. She's more human than ever in this, and they did a fantastic job with not only the mechanics, but really showing this vulnerable/novice side to her. I'm thoroughly impressed and captiva

I want to say again, I have LITERALLY played the game for less than an hour. But I was absolutely captivated the entire time. It could immediately go South, I totally acknowledge that.

But it APPEARS to be a huge leap forward for believable human lead characters in an adventure game, and I found playing Lara absolutely heart-stopping at times.

I am worried a little bit that people will take this as a whole-hearted endorsement when I have played so LITTLE of the game at this point.  But after reading the writer’s interview and hearing from female gamer friends who are much further along, I am very enthused and hopeful.

They could still mess it up. TOMB RAIDER, DON’T LET ME DOWN!
