Yesterday Rose City Comic-Con’s Twitter shared a story from Gail Simone that just goes to show how the saying, “If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say it all” has been slowly fading from our culture.

This is so damn fantastic.

hi gail, i just wanted to let you know that your issue of batgirl where poison ivy has SAD continues to mean a lot to me. Ivy is my favorite character, and while I don't have SAD, i do have frequent stretches of apathy that sorta punch me in the face. I a

Thank you!

I am very proud of that story. Ign.com voted it the single best issue of any comic that year, which is pretty nice.

Ivy is a character I didn’t really get growing up, I didn’t really understand her very well. But I started thinking of her as someone who the whole world is trying to re-shape and push around, and that helped me define her as the ultimate in rebellion, the last honest person in some ways.

I love Gail Simone, but I cant help but hate her Batgirl run for what it represents, and whenever someone calls her the best Batgirl writer, I want to scream Kelley Puckett’s name at them at the top of my lungs.

She’s the best BARBARA GORDON writer, sure, but best Batgirl writer? Not even close.

I hope it’s okay to respond to this, it came up in my feed thing.

It’s absolutely fine to hate my work for any reason or no reason at all, I don’t take any offense at that. But beyond that, I agree with you pretty much on best Batgirl writers.

For me, the best are Kelly Puckett for Cass, Bryan Q. Miller for Steph, and Chuck Dixon and Scott Beatty for Barbara in Batgirl: Year One.

I am proud of what we did and I think there’s a lot of great stuff in my run, but having a favorite Batgirl writer is like having a favorite Beatle, everyone has one and everyone’s absolutely correct in their choice, you know?

Respectfully, the problem with this is:

Comparing the Batgirls as equal doesn’t work.

Cass was one of the first (the first?) women of color to headline a Big Two series. To this day she is by far the longest-running. Beating the next-closest by about six times. As far as I can figure, the only character of color in history to have a longer Big Two single run was Shang-Chi’s original Master of Kung Fu series.

(Black Panther has had many more issues as a solo star but has never had a single run get to issue seventy without a cancellation and relaunch)

Cass has an importance from a social justice/diversity standpoint that is regularly ignored. The narrative that it was A Real Shame that she lost her title, her codename, and disappeared for years is incomplete: it was also one of the biggest backwards steps in terms of diversity in the history of Big Two comics. And that is entirely ignored.

So when people are skeptical of Steph having been Batgirl or Babs being back as Batgirl, it’s not about (or not just about playing favorites), it’s about how once we had a Batgirl who was a big step forward and she was violently and dismissively tossed aside for white girls.

I don’t disagree with any of that, I didn’t feel we were comparing Batgirls however, so much as Batgirl writers. I was very pissed about Cass, so much so that I didn’t really give Steph a fair chance until her book was almost cancelled. I don’t to this day understand taking Cass out of the picture. It makes no sense, and the reasons I have heard just don’t add up.

So, yeah, I don’t get it. From a purely commercial viewpoint, Cass and Barb have proven success as far as sales are concerned. She needs her own book. Hopefully someone is working towards that, as I have banged my head against the wall on that for years.
