Two Awards from TIL

TWO (2) of my books just won awards from the Texas Institute of Letters: The Sea-Ringed World: Sacred Stories of the Americas for Best Translation and The Witch Owl Parliament (Clockwork Curandera #1) for Best YA Book (which I wrote with my cool carnal and collaborator Raúl the Third).

I believe this is only the second time in TIL history that a single author has won two of the book awards.

The first time was in 2019, when I won both the middle-grade and young-adult awards.

THE OBSIDIAN CODEX Podcast

My Mesoamerican cosmic horror podcast The Obsidian Codex will debut on February 14, 2022 on Spotify and most other platforms.

It’s about a Mexican American archeologist who receives an ancient text that could trigger the end of the world. Will his own desperation and academic greed push him to use it? And what shadowy organization would dare place such an apocalyptic tool in his hands?

Check out the trailer!

The Prince & the Coyote

It’s happening! Levine Querido will be publishing my YA historical novel The Prince & the Coyote about how the teenage crown prince of Tetzcoco survives the fall of his city and the slaughter of his family, spending years in exile on the run from a tyrant before taking the name Nezahualcoyotl and reclaiming his kingdom … and then helping found the Triple Alliance we now know as the Aztec Empire.

The book will feature a cover and amazing interior art by Amanda Mijangos.

NYPL and CPL Lists

Excited to announce that the New York Public Library has picked SIX of my projects for their Best Books 2021 lists!

For teens, The Witch Owl Parliament (illustrated by Raúl the Third). For kids, My Two Border Towns and Mis dos pueblos fronterizos (illustrated by Erika Meza), El ascenso del rey enano (illustrated by Charlene Bowles) and Cuentos sagrados de América (which I expanded, contributing two stories and other additional material, originally written by María García Esperón, illustrated by Amanda Mijangos). And for adults, The Route of Ice and Salt, my translation of the cult classic by José Luis Zárate.

My translation of Cuentos sagrados de América, The Sea-Ringed World: Sacred Stories of the Americas, also made it onto the Chicago Public Library’s Best of the Best lists!
