Meet Carlene Love Flores - And a Very Special Surprise!

Join me in welcoming Author Carlene Love Flores. One of Evernight Publishing rising stars. I got her to answer a few of my questions.  So grab your coffee and join me as we get to know a little about this gifted wordsmith Carlene Love Flores.
Do you do anything to get you into the zone to write?  Absolutely!  Darkening the room is a must.  This often includes building a blanket hut big enough to fit me and my laptop ;)

Which authors inspire your writing?  I don’t write paranormal but my favorite author is Sherrilyn Kenyon.  I fell in love with the way she writes tragedy and redemption right away.

What is your favorite book, character and why?  This might be shocking…haha…favorite book is by Sherrilyn Kenyon—Seize the Night from her Dark-Hunter series, also the first romance novel I ever read.  Everyone hates Valerius Magnus until Tabitha humanizes him.  I like how the characters teach as about assumptions and how they’re not usually any good.  J

Do you prefer to write erotic or sweet?  Hmm, maybe somewhere in between.  I’m too dark to be sweet but not quite at the level of my beloved erotic writer friends.  Now I’m thinking of chocolate chips, semi-sweet, semi-dark.  They’re both tasty, right?  How about we say I prefer to write “yummy”.  J
I myself am very partial to semi-sweet.
Which famous person, living or dead, are you drawn to?   Oooo, I’d have to say Martin L. Gore.  He’s the main songwriter for Depeche Mode.  They’re known for music that’s darker but if you ask Martin, he’ll say he feels his songs are filled with hope.  I love that.

Where do you see yourself in five years?   Oh boy, I’ll be the mom of a sixteen year old at that point.  Who in the heck knows what my world will be like then!  Advice anyone?
Boy, been there, done that, but mine was a step-daughter. My advice? Duck and cover. You give them the tools now it's time to watch them you what you taught them. It's rewarding a lot of the time and you will see your influence shine through.
Finish this sentence: I know I’ve made it when:  I touch at least one person with a story.

What advice would you give aspiring writers?   Learn your craft but don’t get caught up and overwhelmed in the technicalities.  Write a story from your heart.  Absolutely write from your heart.  Fall in love with your characters, let them love the wrong way, fall apart if they have to. Then be there for them when they need re-building.  And join your local writers group!

What do you see yourself writing in the future?   More edgy, intimate love stories.

If you could have one superpower what would it be and why?   People might not believe one would need a superpower for this, but let me tell you, taming and understanding my curly hair would be pretty awesome.
Boy, don't I know it. I think I have whole states missing in my curly hair. Lol!
What time of the day are you at your best to write?   I’m a huge early to bed girl but my favorite time to write is the dead of night.  Go figure. J

And now for something completely different…

What do you look at first with an attractive man or woman, face, body or smile?   Hmm, well normally I’d say smile and eyes but ever since Survivor started featuring long-haired contestants a few years back, (Remember Matt who was stuck on Redemption Island the entire season??) I’m now fascinated by that wavy haired, “not sure if you’re a surfer, tarzan, country boy” type.   And it must not be just me because every season now, they have a new version of Matt.  J  Yay!
I'm a major Survivor fan and I totally agree. I loved Matt and love that type of hunky man. Eye candy every Wednesday night!
Explain your perfect day.   The neighborhood cat stops by for an early morning treat on the front porch.  She’s a great day-starter.  And then the best ending, singing my kiddo to sleep each night.  All the stuff in between is what I make of it.  J

What is the most decadent desert you can’t say no to?   Let’s just get one thing straight up front, I’m generally saying yes to anything labeled dessert.  I mean, I would literally drive cross country for a not-quite-thawed-chocolate-chip-cookie from the Carl’s Jr. drive-thru.

Do you have a favorite holiday what is it and what makes it special to you?  I love Christmas for all the normal reasons people love Christmas but also because it brings us out of our houses at night to see all the magic the lights bring.

What key words describe you best? Beachy.  Silly.  Loving.  Lucky.
I loved getting to know a little bit about you. Thanks so much for sharing with everyone. Now for the special surprise I mentioned. Carlene is giving away her e-book A Sidewalk Flower

To enter to win just answer this in the comment section: What would you drive cross country for? Carlene will announce the winner Sunday night, 1/27.

Blurb: In Sidewalk Flower, a jaded young woman sets out on an intense road trip home to deal with her past when she is asked to allow a relative stranger to tag along. But, she’s seen too many good guys succumb to the harsh realities of her supposed privileged life in the music business and intends on keeping her distance. When she picks up Lucky, the southern gentleman cousin of her selfish best friend, she has absolutely no idea of how to accept a perfectly good person with good intentions.  Home has never looked so good, or felt so far away.   Excerpt: Her two insistent hands pressed against the back of his neck like she was forcing him to do this.  It was cute.  Yeah, she was dead wrong.  He’d wanted to kiss her since he’d first seen her, hopping down out of that girly silver Jeep.  But he knew better.  Earning something you wanted took more than a few hours.  And if he’d gathered anything from her hot and cold responses so far, it was that Jaxon’s vague but deliberate warning that he take good care of her hadn’t been just puffed up, ego talk.       This girl was in trouble.      He should have stepped away for both their sakes.  He knew he didn’t deserve this kind of kiss, not yet.  But California was glued to him on full speed and didn’t appear to have a pause, let alone a rewind button.  On second thought, he’d let her get this out of her system and then they’d start over.  Her hand had to be killing her, so he managed to pull it down and keep it tucked at her side.  But the other one was petting those hairs at the back of his neck, leaving him seconds away from coming undone.  If he clenched his jaw any tighter, those painful yet ticklish sensations shooting throughout his upper body would without a doubt get him into trouble down below.  Heck, if he squeezed her in his arms like he wanted to, she’d feel how aroused he’d let himself get.  He worked his jaw to ease away from the pain, wishing he could let go entirely and enjoy her touch. Yep, their fresh start was gonna have to wait until she was done proving her point.  Cute girl though.   * * *   His lips were soft and salty like he’d worked up a sweat at some point during the day.  Crap, again she cursed his damn tempting bloodline.  This would only complicate their pending trip even more.  So naturally, when he smartly pulled her one hand away, she found a sweet spot of baby hairs with the other and went for more.  Her rules—that was the only way to play with the boys and stay safe.  Lucky’s hands eventually cupped the sides of her face, which was fine because she had made her point. “Are we okay?” he asked. Well, hell if she knew.  “Yes,” she said.  They could figure the truth out later.  There would be an endless amount of open road ahead of them come Sunday to think.  Tonight was desperate Friday.  “We’re good.”  But she hesitated because he looked for a moment like he may have regretted things. When he coughed and cleared his throat, she was sure of it.  “Come on, Miss ‘We’re Good’,” he said, as he urged her the rest of the way to the back door.  “I’d like to keep that promise I made Jaxon.  You could go a little easier on me from here on out.”   The inside of her mouth remained warm from their kiss as she swallowed a cool breath of air.  The contrasting temperatures left her with a chill and a memory—the taste of the last kiss she’d had.  Cigarettes and beer.  No hand holding.  No talking.  No first, second or third date.  As badly as her sour heart warned her to throw Lucky in with that lot, she just couldn’t do it.  He’d already taken more care of her than any other guy she’d known.  “You shouldn’t take things so personally.”  At his wince, she splintered and added, “I know you didn’t sign up for this; I’ll try to be…better.”  No promises though. “Okay.”  He hesitated, and shifted on the steps.  “Ready to go inside?” “No, you should go in though.  I need to be alone.”  A tingle traveled around her wounded hand and she made the mistake of squeezing it into a fist.    Lucky dipped his head then and ran his hand up along the back of his neck, rubbing it in his obvious confusion.  “Trista. I’m kind of at a loss here.  You’re obviously in pain.  Just come inside and let me help you.” She tried to warn him, hoping he’d listen.  “Lucky, you’re a nice guy.  Okay, I get it.  You want to help, but I didn’t ask for that and you have no idea what you’d be signing up for anyway.  Assholes can barely handle my world; a good guy like you doesn’t stand a chance.  Jaxon had no right doing this.” “Hmmm.”  He scratched at his sideburn.  “You don’t know what I can and can’t handle.”  He looked down but she had caught his every word.    Contact Links (website, blog, Twitter, Facebook): Website: http://carlenelove.com/ Blog: http://carlenelove.com/ Twitter: @cloveflores Facebook: Carlene Love Flores   Book buy links: Evernight— http://www.evernightpublishing.com/sidewalk-flower-by-carlene-love-flores/ Amazon— http://www.amazon.com/Sidewalk-Flower-Pointe-Novel-ebook/dp/B00AZR275O/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1357905030&sr=8-16&keywords=Sidewalk+Flower All Romance E-Books— https://www.allromanceebooks.com/product-sidewalkflower-1041391-148.html BookStrand—  http://www.bookstrand.com/term-search?term=Sidewalk+Flower

Happy Endings Blog H0p! What's Your Happy Ending?

Happy endings romance giveaway hop #HEGIVEAWAYTell your happy ending story!
The Happy Endings Giveaway Hop was organized by Reading Romances!  As a romance reader I live for that happy ending, as a writer, nothing gives me more pleasure than to have my creations earn that happy ending after learning how to share their hearts without fear. Trust is a big stumbling block for my characters Tegan and Kyra in Passion's Flight. They both have dark secrets that, given to the wrong person, could destroy them. Tegan struggles to control the panther inside him, aware of the fine line between his humanity and the feral simmering inside him. Kyra fights a dual nature also, but her secrets have come to track her and bring her back to Atlantis to a future she never asked for. Only through trust, and allowing the heart to lead can they win their happy ending.  I found my happy ending late in life, being stubborn could  have a lot to do with that I'm sure. Until I met my husband, I didn't listen to what my heart and gut were saying, thinking I could change things. When I met Curt, my heart and gut were in agreement. For the first time ever I knew this man with a smart mouth and brutally honest nature was the man I waited for my whole life for.  Like my hero and heroine, I took a chance and got my happy ending.  Let me know what your happy ending is, whether it's your favorite book or reality. I will be giving away a PDF of Passion's Flight to one of you and you can take flight with these two who struggle toward what all of us seek. Love.    BLURB:With ferals attacking the human populace in greater numbers than ever before, Tegan Murin has his hands full these days. When he is ordered to find and destroy a deadly artifact known as Oman’s Seal, deal with his estranged step-father and find a missing archaeologist. He’s a bit irritable. Add into the mix a recurring dream of one sexy seductress leading him to his death… well, you get one very pissed off were-panther.Kyra Navarone is an archaeologist who is more than what she seems. Escaping from the ferals who captured her, she ends up running into the brooding, irritating man who makes her blood run hot just with one look. Her life depends on the betrayal of this compelling man, but how can she live with herself afterward? With ferals, An Atlantean Tracker and Lucien closing in on them, they are running out of time, Tegan and Kyra must learn to trust each other in order survive. More hangs in the balance than their lives. Their actions could very well spell the end of everything for not just their world, but the world hidden beneath the waves as well.

WIP Wednesday

Welcome to another installment of WIP Wednesday. Here is another snippet from The Kings Lady Things are heating up between Darius and Simon in a big way.*Warning - Strong language, hot and bothered hunks with some heavy petting involved. M/M *  Teaser:   Simon nipped at Darius's lips with unrelenting demand and fucking hell his mouth taunted him to the point he forgot why he resisted this. He opened for the thrust of Simon's tongue exploring, tasting and urging. And as Simon's taste exploded in his mouth he hummed, because god’s damn he tasted as good as he smelled. He met the aggression of the kiss with a fiery passion of his own. His hands rose, fingers digging deep within soft strands of hair to hold him right where he wanted him as he deepened the kiss allowing his walls to crumple around him. His hips ground against the hard budge of Simon’s erection the friction sending a bolt of pleasure down his spine to his throbbing cock. It was madness, this need, which shot through his system short circuiting every thought but one, to get this male naked and taste what he offered.  He let his hands release Simon’s hair to trail down the strong column of his throat loving the hard muscle of broad shoulders and down the firm chest to a trim waist.   Simon groaned into his mouth and man, what a fucking turn on that was. His fingers brushed over the button of his jeans for a brief moment and got a hiss from Simon following a half choked curse. Unable to help it. He let his hand go lower cupping his erection firmly with one hand while the other moved around and down to his taut ass. Surprisingly, it was Simon to break away. His chest heaved with his harsh breaths as is gaze devoured him with his hunger. “Fuck. Me.” He cursed softly. And what do you know Darius found he was on board with that. Couldn’t wait to have him in all possible ways. What he wanted for the first time clear as a cut and polished diamond.  See you next week for another installment of WIP Wednesdays.

Pick Me Up Monday

Happy Monday!
Another workweek  begins and the hectic race to meet deadlines and juggle the day job continues. With my ever growing pile of work to be done, and it's only January, I believe it's time to start prioritizing my projects. Easier said than done with my muse yammering away in directions I'm not ready to tread yet. Such is the life for a writer. It will be interesting to see which of my WIPs will get finished first, all the while I'm taking notes on other stories as they crop up at the most unusual times. in between a movie, a bubble bath (my guilty pleasure), or even in the middle of a conference call at work. So, here is what I have on my list of priorities at this time, of course it may change next week, but for now, it's good to go.
1-Finish up my last edits on The Kings Lady and give to my editor by Friday
2- Finish draft of historical dragon shifter novella
3-Begin rough draft of Dark Desire: A Dark Breed Novel
4-Begin rough draft of Fourth Dark Breed Novel
5-Finish the Summoning and final edits by March.
6-Finish research on historical time travel
7-Outline for historical time travel and reincarnation story.
8-Start work on the Cast Wars series.

Alright, with a full time job it may be a bit much I'll admit, but number seven and eight will more than likely push into next year. So I have my goal of two Dark Breed novels, the first book in the Rise of the Sentinels series and two novella's to do this year.

Whew, eyes crossing and wondering how long I can go without sleep. Lol!
I also must add in a Romcon Convention and Hot Mojave Knights. I've cut my travels down this year so it should make things a bit easier.

Hopefully being the key word here.

Don't forget to check out my WIP Wednesday and I have another Blog Hop coming up starting on Saturday January 19th so be sure to pencil me in next weekend and see what I have going.

Have a wonderful week all.

WIP Wednesday

Welcome to WIP Wednesday. This week I offer up another installment of The Kings Lady: Knights of Excalibur Arthur's first meeting with Gwen turns out to be quite a revelation for him.    TEASER:  The sound of shattering glass broke the peaceful air surrounding the neighborhood. A huge shadow hurtled past him forcing him to duck back to keep from being hit. Drake and Merci moved to his side as they looked at the broken front window and an old recliner that now rested on its side next to the large elm tree. A curse exploded from Drake as he leapt up the steps and kicked in the door, Merci on his heels as they disappeared inside. Arthur followed, pulling the long buck knife strapped to his ankle, his hand firm around the handle. He stepped into the home ignoring the broken pieces of furniture strewn about the room. His entire focus riveted on the broad back of a tall dark-haired man impeccably dressed and pulsing with enough twisted magic it repelled him to take a step back. Gritting his teeth against the pressure building against his temples, he forced his feet to carry him further into the room, Drake and Merci at his sides their combined magic’s ready to engage.  Vance swung his head to the side, pinning Arthur with a gaze of pure malice. “I was expecting you to show up much later father. I just thought I would already be gone and the prize with me.” “You underestimated me yet again Vance.” Arthur drawled, his southern accent becoming more pronounced. “It’s becoming a habit of yours you know?” “Not this time. This time you underestimated me. Tell your guard dogs to back off, or I’ll kill the witch.” At his demand, he swung around showing what his big body kept hidden. A blaze of red hair cascaded down her shoulders in a wild tumble of curls framing a heart-shaped face. Thick dark lashes framed large eyes slightly tilted up and dominated her delicate features. Full lush lips parted as she rasped in a breath. Vance’s hand tightened around her throat and lifted her up until she was forced to stand on her toes in order to keep from strangling. Arthur could only stare in mute silence, stunned and helpless against the pull of those glistening blue eyes the color of the Caribbean Sea. Eyes he hoped he would never again gaze into, for within those sparkling eyes housed the soul of the sole woman he had ever loved. And the one who’s betrayal he could never forgive.   That's it for this week, let me know how you like it and I promise to respond to all your questions.

Pick Me Up Monday - Resolutions for a New Year

Welcome back and Happy Monday!  Hope you got your coffee in hand and ready to start the first full week of January. I can't believe 2013 is here. The years seem to be flying by faster and faster. My list of to do get longer too, and this time, I have quite a bit of work ahead of me and loving the challenge.   With January comes resolution time, and I kept mine quite simple. To finish three novels and two novellas, which are all in one stage or another, and not lose my sanity in the process. That's it. Nothing about losing weight, a healthier lifestyle, blah, blah, blah. Nope, I already know I need to do these things, and so far have been doing them. My motivation is the books I need to be around to write. Yeah, I'm a bit of a workaholic. Not so good with idle time and can't sit down and watch TV without having some project to do. Whether it's a book to write, or a painting, I get twitchy when not working. Used to be the idea of retirement scared the hell out of me, but with my writing career on an upward swing, the thought of losing the day job isn't as tough as it once was. In fact, I would love nothing more than to devote my time entirely enmeshed in my worlds. What projects do I have going on this year? Well, I've already mentioned in past blogs I have two Dark Breed novels I am working on this year, the last installment of The Knights of Excalibur is almost finished and ready to go to my editor. The Summoning is getting a bit of polish before sending it out into the world, plus one historical dragon shifter novella, and one historical time travel.  So you'll be seeing a bit of me this year. I also have started a new blog addition called WIP Wednesdays where you can get samples of what's up and coming which I hope you enjoy. Your feedback is appreciated and encouraged, and I promise to return any questions you may leave in the comment section. Well, back to work until next week. Have a great one and we will talk again.l

WIP Wednesdays

Happy Wednesday! I've been thinking about adding a little something extra for a while now and thought you all may enjoy getting some tidbits on my works in progress.  I'm kicking off my new WIP Wednesdays with The Kings Lady: Knights of Excalibur. Enjoy.  When Gwen McAllister meets Vance Hollister for the first time it's a meeting she will never forget, and one she may not survive.  Perhaps it was the cold calculating  gaze, which swept over her from head to toe leaving her with the familiar sense, she didn’t meet his standards. Or the fact something about him waved a huge red flag with the words “wrong” in big and bold pinged through her mind. Whatever the cause she couldn’t ignore the soft clang of warning bells sounding off in the back of her mind. First impressions being of utmost importance –or so her aunt Carlotta always said – this man was sadly lacking in her opinion. Which happened to be the defining reason she stood on the other side of a locked screen, magical bag weapons at the ready. The soft brush against her ankles drew her attention to a rather large and very demanding familiar. With snowy white fur long and lustrous the Himalayan eyed their unwanted visitor with an air of disdain only a cat could manage. With a twitch of his whiskered nose, he turned his blue gaze on Gwen. “He smells wrong to me Wen, don’t trust him.” Now for anyone else the idea of a talking cat would freak the hell right out of them. For Gwen being a witch and all well, not so much. “I couldn’t agree with you more Salt. I just wonder what he really is after.” She agreed on the telepathic link the two shared. “Miss McAllister, I’m afraid I have rather distressing news that would better be given to you inside.” Right, fat chance of that happening buddy. She thought as she gave him her sweetest smile. “You can say what you wish from right there Mr. Hollister.” She had to bite the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing at the irritation that sparked in his dark eyes. “I have news of your Aunt. She charged me to see to your safety.” The first stirrings of unease settled in her stomach. “What about my Aunt?” “I’m afraid to say she was murdered yesterday.” Shock caromed through her at his words making her head buzz and heart lurch painfully in her chest. She had to have misunderstood him. If Carlotta passed she surely would have felt it. Wouldn’t she? “Salt can you sense Lottie?” She sent to her familiar, silently prying to Hecate this nasty man was wrong. “Wen I don’t get anything, but a blank where she should be.”

Pick Me Up Monday - Happy New Years

Happy Monday! I can't think of a better way to start New Years than with a hot guy with a come hither vibe. Something to keep you warm on cold winter nights.I hope everyone has awesome New Years. For me, it's going to be all about watching the ball drop in Times Square and the fireworks light up the Las Vegas strip via the television in the comfy surroundings of my warm home.I want to do a special shout-out to Ashley, who won both PDFs of my Knights of Excalibur series. Thanks so much for your participation in the Gifting Christmas Blog Hop. I had so many wonderful comments, I found it hard to pick just one person. If I could have I would have picked them all. I'm finishing the last edits to The Kings Lady, and off it will go to my publisher. The trilogy was fun to write, and though I am sad to have it end, there are other books waiting for my attention. The Dark Breeds third installment has a title now, Dark Desire and the fourth book is still untitled but in outline stage. I also have a small historical dragon shifter novella I'm working on along with some other things in the works. 2013 promises to be a big year, and I can't wait to get it at it. Well back to work since these stories don't write themselves. See you in 2013!

Gifting Books Christmas Blog H0p!

Merry Christmas! When asked to join this wonderful blog hop I jumped at the chance. I LOVE Reading Romance and try to get involved with everyone  they put on. Through them, I have found some awesome readers who share the same passion for books that I do. And some of you have even picked up one or two of my books, of which tickles me no end, especially when you have been kind enough to tell me how much you loved them.  Since this blog hop is about gifting books I wanted to share with you all the book that started me on the path to writing. I have always loved books, reading whenever I could get the time, then a friend gave me Gone With the Wind and at first the sheer size of it left me excited and daunted. I would read a chapter and discuss it with my girlfriend every day after school and soon found myself at the final chapter. At the last page as Rhett is walking out of Scarlet's life I knew I had to write. To this day I tribute my writing to that one book which changed my life.  I hope to pen such a compelling book some day and who knows maybe someone will be inspired to write just as I was. Please feel free to tell me about your favorite book, I would  love to know and perhaps put it on my to be read pile.  For this hop, I am gifting your choice of either the first two books of my Dark Breed series in or the first two of my Knights of Excalibur series. These books are e-book and in PDF form. Here's a bit about both series

Tambra’s life is in the balance as the secrets of her past place her in the middle of old deceits and a betrayal that will change the world forever.  Will Marcus and Tambra’s love survive or will it be too late.  Passions Flight: A Dark Breed Novel
Blurb: With ferals attacking the human populace in greater numbers than ever before, Tegan Murin has his hands full these days. Add into the mix a recurring dream of one sexy seductress leading him to his death… well, you get one very pissed off were-panther.

Kyra Navarone is an archaeologist who is more than what she seems. Escaping from the ferals who captured her, she ends up running into the brooding, irritating man who makes her blood run hot just with one look. Her life depends on the betrayal of this compelling man, but how can she live with herself afterward?
