Five interesting tidbits about Daryl Devoré's erotic rock star romance – What Happens in Bangkok
First off a quick thank you to Krista for allowing me to visit today.
What Happens in Bangkok is my latest erotic romance. This story features a drag queen club owner and a rock star.1. Why did I pick Bangkok as the setting? Good question. It had to be used as a setting. Come on. I'm an erotic romance writer and we – North Americans – say it as  Bang cock.  It's just a setting waiting to be used.But I would like to point out – it is pronounced more like Ban Gok. My Thai is not that good.
2. How did this book get started? I was driving own to visit my daughter and idea smacked me in the forehead. I got out my laptop and wrote 3 chapters in a matter of 30 minutes. Mind you there were some gaps – like the Hero was called "X" and the Heroine "Y" and I think the city was "C".
3. Why did I choose a drag queen club? It was the song on the radio that nudged the idea of the story. Gloria Gaynor's – I Will Survive. I was thinking how it was – at one time – the gay anthem and the whole story just evolved from there.
4. Why did I choose rock star for the hero's occupation? I didn't. He did. I'm a pantser and I pretty much have no idea where my characters are taking me..
5. Is this a standalone book? No. This is the first time I've written a series like this. It is a trilogy. All 3 books wanted to be written at once, but I put my foot down and made books 2 and 3 wait their turn. They are now written and book 2 is at the publishers.

Droplets of blood seeped from Darien’s wolf tattoo, mesmerizing him. They trickled over the inside of his bicep, splattering against the bar floor.

Darien ran his hand back through his hair and frowned. Why was the wolf bleeding? It was supposed to look sexy. Turn chicks on. Not bleed. He blinked as a thought formed. Maybe it wasn’t the tattoo. Could he be bleeding? He didn’t remember getting hurt. But that might be because he’d had too many vodka shots.

Expensive gold infused vodka.

An order, snapped out in Thai, ripped his focus away from the cost of the booze.

Stumbling with the translation, his gut clenched. “Check everyone. Anybody alive. Kill them.”

A shrill female scream. A gun shot. Silence.

That’d be one of the hookers. Damn. Hope it wasn’t the one with the butterfly tattoo above her clit. She had a mouth on her that performed miracles. Dude! What the fuck! Must be the vodka talking. Stay focused. There are guys with guns out there.

Darien stretched his neck out and peered around the edge of the bar. In his line of vision, a male leg stuck out from under a table. Expensive looking shoe. Presumably Italian leather. Probably belonged to Nai Jâhng.

Darien raised his eyebrows. Wow. Somebody had the balls to kill a Triad boss.

He shifted his glance. A few feet to the left lay a female arm with brilliant orange fingernails. He shivered at the memory of those nails grazing his balls. He focused on a tiny object a foot in front of him. Shards of glass were scattered about. He frowned, trying to remember what happened. He’d walked behind the private club’s bar to get another bottle of vodka when, one by one, bottles started exploding. Next he was on the floor, looking at the blood dripping from his tattoo. He glanced at his arm. The bleeding had stopped.

Okay, so he wasn’t gonna bleed to death. Good. Now he just had to get his dumbass outta there. Past them. The guys with the guns. How the fuck could he do that?

Voices interrupted his thoughts. The tones were panicked or angry, and the words too fast for him to translate, although he did understand the meaning of the three rapid gunshots, followed by a short groan. The door at the opposite end of the bar, leading to the kitchen, swooshed as someone pushed it open.

Gunfire and loud screams sounded from the kitchen. The door swung open again. Darien translated the shooter’s words, “Nobody alive in there. I’ll check the offices upstairs.”

Darien slid back, trying not to disturb the glass. He did his best not to yelp when a sharp edge sliced through the skin on his knee. With deliberate movements, he backtracked the length of the Black Dragon’s bar. Squatting, he peeked around the end.

Three men stood with their backs to him, dressed in black pants and muscle shirts. Each one held an assault rifle. A bleeding sun tattoo visible on one attacker’s shoulder. Daeng Arthit Triad. Not good. So not good.

He looked forward. The kitchen door was six feet away. Six feet of wide-open, easily visible space. It might as well be six inches or a mile. He couldn’t risk it. Wouldn’t. He didn’t want to get shot.

He shifted his weight off the knee pressing on a piece of shattered bottle. What the fuck, dude? You’re gonna die if they find you. Better to be running for your life than just lay here and let ’em kill you. That was the logical side of his head’s opinion.

The chicken shit side said, Stay here. Stay down. You’re safe.

A yell and several more gunshots drifted down from the floor above. The men pounded up the stairs.

Without taking a moment to think, Darien bolted through the kitchen doors, then skidded to a stop. The rancid smell of burning food and fresh blood hit him deep in the pit of his stomach. Four bodies lay facing him, eyes wide, obviously unseeing. One of the dead chefs held a massive meat cleaver clenched in his right hand.

Never bring a knife to a gun fight. He shook his head. Quoting movies at a time like this? Focus, dude.

Heart pounding, Darien cast his gaze about the room, looking for an escape, while his ears listened for the sound of running footsteps coming up behind. He fought the nausea of rising fear as he moved forward, searching for an exit, while trying to keep his gaze from the corpses.

Please let this be some shitty nightmare, and I’m gonna wake up now. Fuck!

In the back right corner, he spotted a door. With renewed hope, he raced to freedom. He bolted through the doorway, skidded in the pool of blood, lost his balance and crashed onto the dead hooker. He tried not to be judgmental, but in the brief glance he’d had, a girl on her knees in front of a man with no pants on was obviously on the clock. Or cock, as the case might be.

He braced his hands on the blood soaked floor and pushed himself to his knees. The back of her head was missing, and her dead john had no face. Just a bloody, pulpy mess. He laid sprawled back on the desk. Big enough guy to be one of the ones who was supposed to be guarding the front entrance. Well, he went out with a bang.

The room spun. A cold sweat dampened Darien’s brow. His stomach flipped, then heaved its contents on the hooker’s cherry red dress. Gagging and coughing, he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. The smell of tossed alcohol hit him in the face. He heaved again. Shit. Coupla hundred bucks worth. What a waste.

He dropped back onto his haunches, waiting until the spasms in his stomach calmed. Footsteps from above reminded him of his mission. Get out. Alive. Now!

Tristan was. His long legs, muscular calves, and thighs blocked her view of the door. He’d placed his precious book on the table. The volume was safe. She was not.

Before she could push to a sitting position or think to fight, he straddled her, his hands circling her wrists, holding her arms to each side. His touch didn’t harm, at least not yet.

Her heart pounded.

He offered a smile.

How dare he be so smug. “Release me at once.”

He tightened his grip slightly and studied her mouth, then her eyes. “Violet.” Awe flooded his face. “I wondered about your eye color but never expected this.”

She pushed and writhed but did no good against his strength. Breathless, she stopped. “What have you done with Peter?”

Tristan stared at her eyes. “Amazing color, quite beautiful. Fits your dark hair and pale skin perfectly.”

She rammed her thighs into him.

He held her more firmly. “Stop that.”

“Not until you tell me what you’ve done with my brother.” She slammed into him.

He scooted down and trapped her legs. “Peter’s on the main deck with the other men.”

“He’s a child and proved it by helping you escape.”

“This wasn’t his doing, and you’ve no reason to fear for his safety. I have James, my quartermaster, looking after him.”

“A bloody pirate, you mean. The same as you. Perhaps even worse than you.”

“No. James is a good man.” A haunted look touched Tristan’s features before he shook off whatever had troubled him and became casual. “He saved my life. He’ll take great care to watch your brother.”

She wanted to retort but couldn’t reconcile her indignation with Tristan’s previous anguish and the mean scratches she’d left on his cheek. Dried blood had gone black, the surrounding skin swollen and red. “What do you mean he saved your life?”

“Just that, ask no more for I’ll give you no other answer.”

“The only thing I want from you is my freedom.”

He stroked her wrists. “You want the same as me.”

She pushed against him, straining with the effort.

He tightened his grip, proving she wasn’t a match for his strength. If he chose to take her now, she’d have no choice except to allow him what he willed.

She didn’t beg. Wouldn’t. Not to him or any man, including Bishop. They could conquer her body but not her spirit, never her heart. Reconciled to her fate, she grew limp as she could, pulse racing. “Take what you’ve come for and be quick about it.”

“I shan’t be quick, Diana. With you, I’ll never be quick.”

Heat stung her face and throat. “You won’t be the last, either.”

His gray eyes darkened as storm clouds do, danger building in them. “What do you mean?”

“When you’re finished with me, I go to the man to whom I truly belong. Nothing will change that no matter how long you intend to take raping me.”

Despite her harsh words, he didn’t flinch or frown.

“Who is this man with whom you’d willingly lie?”

She turned her face away.

Tristan brushed his lips over her cheek and buried his face in her hair.

She tensed even more, determined to resist.

“Why do you fight me when you want this as much as I do?” He kissed her jaw.

About Jana Begovic
  Jana Vasilj-Begovic was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina where she lived until 1991. In 1991, she immigrated to Canada and after graduating from the Faculty of Education - Queens’ University, Kingston, she began to work for the Government of Canada in the field of foreign language education and training. As a subject matter expert in language training and testing, she has participated in multiple international conferences and projects, and designed and delivered numerous specialized seminars and workshops. As the result of a multinational research project she led, she co-authored an article that was published in 2015 by Cambridge Scholars as a chapter of the book, “Language in Uniform.” In addition to a B.Ed. degree in English and Dramatic Arts, she holds an M.A. Degree in Philology, as well as B.A. degrees in English and German Languages and Literature. Her debut novel, “Poisonous Whispers” is the reflection of her love for the written word and her lifelong fascination with storytelling. She is currently working on her second novel. She lives in Ottawa, Canada with her husband.
