Everything We Know About Marvel’s WONDER MAN Series

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is making his way to Disney+ in Wonder Man, a Marvel series based on the fun comic character of the same name. The show focuses on the titular character, an actor named Simon Williams who has super powers. And, well, he wants to play a character with super powers. It all feels very meta, indeed. Things will predictably go awry for Williams as he tries to make his acting dreams come true. Who will star in Wonder Man? When will it hit our TV screens?

The title for this series is simply Wonder Man.

Wonder Man’s Plot

Right now, we don’t have much information about the show’s plot. But, based on a couple short Wonder Man clips, we know there will be some humor and real-world commentary in the MCU mix. Besides the fact that Simon is trying to play a super hero on TV while being super in real life, we don’t have much else to work with right now.

TOY STORY Returning to Theaters for 30th Anniversary

Thirty years ago, Pixar launched a new era of cinema with a single movie. Toy Story, the first-ever fully computer-animated feature film, was a transformative smash hit. It influenced generations (and counting) of filmmakers and studios. It also spawned what might be the most critically acclaimed, most impeccable franchise ever. There’s simply not a bad movie—or special—in the bunch. Now the film that began it all is getting ready to celebrate its 30th anniversary, so Disney and Pixar are throwing the best kind of party. Toy Story is returning to theaters this fall.

Pixar’s iconic film, the one that turned the studio into a household name, will be back on the big screen later this year. It will screen in theaters on September 12. That’s two months ahead of its 30th anniversary. Toy Story debuted on November 22, 1995, a fact that doesn’t seem possible for those of us who saw it in theaters originally.

After three decades of rewatches, we don’t exactly need anyone to convince us to see one of the best animated movies ever. Toy Story doesn’t need any hype. But we’re not complaining Disney and Pixar did just that. They followed this news with an incredibly moving video reminding fans they don’t have to wait for September. They can stream all four films on Disney+ right now.

The 30th anniversary is the impetus behind this theatrical re-release. But we’re willing to wager Disney and Pixar don’t mind that this celebration will also serve as a great promotion for Toy Story 5. The series’ fifth installment will arrive in theaters in the summer of 2026 on June 19.

Will it be as good as Toy Story 1, 2, 3, and 4? After 30 years with the franchise that changed animation forever, we would never bet against it.

CBS Cancels LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT After He Skewered Paramount’s ‘Big Fat Bribe’

CBS has cancelled The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. It’s not replacing him as host, either. The long running series, which began with David Letterman in 1993, will end for good in May 2026. The network said this a “financial decision,” despite the show frequently finishing first in late night shows. Coincidentally, this “financial decision” came just days after Stephen Colbert skewered CBS’ parent company Paramount Global for what he called a “big fat bribe” to President Donald Trump.Stephen Colbert with his hand held together at his desk on The Late ShowCBS

The Late Show is done. In a statement we first saw at Variety, CBS provided a statement citing the official reason for ending the show permanently.

We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire The Late Show franchise in May of 2026. We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television.  This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.  It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.

Colbert also addressed the cancellation with his audience.

It is undoubtedly true that costly late night talk shows have been in a precarious position for a long time. The format does not have the reach it once did as more and more young viewers only watch the shows through online clips. It’s not a surprise any of them are on the cutting block. But a cancellation like this, out of nowhere in the middle of the week in July, is a surprise. Maybe.

Colbert has not exactly been shy about making his political feelings known on the show. Recently he took direct aim at his own bosses on their network. He described the recent $16 million dollar settlement CBS’s parent company Paramount made with Donald Trump over a 60 Minutes story a “big fat bribe” intended to ensure Paramount’s sale to Skydance Media, which needs Trump’s approval. Legal experts called Trump’s lawsuit “frivolous.

As Variety‘s Brian Steinberg also beautifully noted, Skydance CEO David Ellison “has projected an image of being intrigued by the politics espoused by President Donald Trump.” Trump has also publicly praised Ellison and his pending purchase.

Maybe this is all one big coincidence and Colbert’s talk about a “bribe” has nothing to do with this decision. Or maybe his comments simply sped up the inevitable fate for a dying format. No one really knows for sure except for the highly paid executives and CEOs who made this decision. The circumstances around this might not past the smell test (especially considering the current state of the world). But it’s not hard proof of impropriety, either.

If you’re wondering what Stephen Colbert’s fellow Paramount employee and talk show host Jon Stewart thinks of all this, we will give him the de facto last word. He called Paramount’s deal a “shameful settlement” even before Colbert commented on it. And just this week he said he’s also unsure if The Daily Show—-the freaking Daily Show—has a future at Comedy Central.

Maybe that’s just a coincidence, too.

STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS’ Latest Episode Connects the Original Series, NEXT GENERATION, and VOYAGER

STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS’ Latest Episode Connects the Original Series, NEXT GENERATION, and VOYAGER_1

In Strange New Worlds’ second episode of season three, “Wedding Bell Blues,” the writers pay homage to several parts of the Star Trek franchise. Not only does it seemingly reference a classic episode of the original series, but it also references Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager. And it even pays homage to a non-canonical Star Trek novel by the late, great author and comic book writer Peter David. And and, it features a voice cameo from a true Star Trek icon, John de Lancie as Q. Here’s how this new, seemingly frivolous comedic episode ties in various parts of the Star Trek canon across decades.

In “Wedding Bell Blues,” the Enterprise docks at Federation Starbase 1 with a three-month layover for repairs after their encounter with the Gorn in the previous episode. They are also welcoming back Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), who is coming back from a three-month sabbatical where she studied medical archaeology under Dr. Roger Korby (Cillian O’ Sullivan). When she returns from her time away, she reveals she’s now dating Korby, breaking Spock’s Vulcan heart.

A now despondent Spock (Ethan Peck) goes to the Starbase 1 bar. There, he drowns his sorrows over Christine entering into a new relationship. Fans of the original Star Trek may remember that Nurse Chapel had a fiancé named Dr. Korby, who had been presumed missing for years. The TOS episode “What Are Little Girls Made Of?” back in 1967 revealed most of this Nurse Chapel backstory. Spock meets an odd bartender with muttonchops who remains nameless, played by Our Flag Means Death actor Rhys Darby. Although he appears human, Spock sees him as Vulcan. This odd fellow promises to fix his current romantic predicament somehow.

Rhys Darby as the unknown entity who is likely a Q in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.Paramount+

The next morning, Spock wakes up in bed, next to Christine. We learn that today is their wedding day, and not the Federation centennial as it originally was. The only person on board the Enterprise who seemingly remembers the truth is Dr. Korby. Only he remembers that he and Christine are a couple. After Spock (very uncharacteristically) punches him, he remembers the real version of events. He and Korby try to convince the crew that this version of events is a fabrication. Eventually, they realize the odd bartender, also posing as an Andorian wedding planner, is an omnipotent being messing with reality. The being says he didn’t like Korby doing archeological digs on his home planet, and wanted to get back at him.

The character’s look and demeanor draws heavy inspiration from the character of Trelane. Played by William Campbell, he appeared in the TOS episode “The Squire of Gothos.” In that episode, the crew of Kirk’s Enterprise beam down to a mysterious planet. There, a reality-bending entity dressed in 18th-century clothing named Trelane captures members of the crew. He toys with them for his own amusement, like a child playing with insects. He’s only stopped when two beings of pure energy arrive, and take him away. Their respective attitudes in that scene reveal that Trelane is a child, despite presenting as a human adult. The two beings are presumably his parents.

The omnipotent Trelane, from the Star Trek episode "The Squire of Gothos" from 1967.Paramount Television

The mysterious being on Strange New Worlds has a look and demeanor almost identical to Trelane. In fact, the unnamed being could very well be Trelane himself. He’s messing with reality seemingly only to amuse himself. And he’s also a “child.” When his parent appears like a swirling bit of energy to take him away, it’s a direct reference to the end of “The Squire of Gothos.” And that’s where the Star Trek: Next Generation connection comes in.

The voice of the parent being is none other than John de Lancie, who played Q in several iterations of Star Trek, but primarily on The Next Generation. In addition, this episode recalls the fourth season TNG episode “Qpid,” where Q creates a Robin Hood-inspired fantasy, all to prove a point about love to Captain Jean-Luc Picard. The silly, frivolous tone of “Wedding Bell Blues” matches the tone of that particular TNG episode almost exactly. The overt suggestion here is that the troublesome being is Q’s child, who is “a mere 8,000 years old.”

Q (John de Lancie) and Picard (Patrick Stewart) in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Qpid."Paramount Television

As for when Q ever had a child, well that takes us straight to Star Trek: Voyager. In that series, Q and a female member of the Q Continuum have a son. Or at the very least, a child who presents as male, as the Q are really genderless. This junior Q first appeared as an infant in the third season Voyager episode “The Q and the Gray” in 1996. Here, John de Lancie’s Q mates with a female version of his race, producing a child. This joining was an effort to stop a civil war within the Q Continuum. Q then makes Captain Kathryn Janeway the baby’s godmother, and disappears into the cosmos.

Q (John de Lancie) hold his infant son in the Voyager episode "The Q and the Grey." Paramount Television

A few seasons later, the child shows up again, referred to as “Q2” in the episode of the same name. Now he presents as a teen male, played by John de Lancie’s real-life son Keegan de Lancie. It turns out, he has inherited all of his father’s troublesome personality traits. Q2 and his father depart into the cosmos by episode’s end. And this episode marks the end of John de Lancie’s time as Q for a very long time. He doesn’t pop up as Q again until the second season of Star Trek: Picard over twenty years later.

Q (John de Lancie) and his son in the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Q2." Paramount Television

As stated in the final episode of Picard, the Q exist outside linear time. So even though Q died at the end of Picard season two, he reappears in the Picard series finale. He tells Picard’s son, Jack Crusher, that the Q exist outside of linear existence. So the version of Q that Picard’s son Jack meets comes from a different point in his own timeline. This means the young Q we meet in Strange New Worlds may very well be both Trelane from the ’60s series, and also Q’s son from Voyager. The voice casting of John de Lancie as the “father” certainly suggests that he is. Neither being refers to itself as part of the Q Continuum, preserving continuity with TNG, who officially make first contact with the Q a century later.

Cover art for the Peter David Star Trek novel "Q -Squared." Pocket Books/Paramount Television

This connection between TOS character Trelane and Q, who was created decades later, was first suggested by writer Peter David. The prolific writer, who wrote legendary runs on comics like The Incredible Hulk, Young Justice, and others, first gave this explanation in the 1994 TNG novel “Q Squared.” That book revealed that Trelane was the godson of Q. However, Peter David heavily hints that Q was Trelane’s actual son. Q denies parentage, but Jean-Luc seems to know the truth. Although he wouldn’t openly admit this to Picard. If the character on Strange New Worlds played by Rhys Darby is indeed Trelane, and seemingly Q is his true dad, then this makes at least part of Peter David’s novel canon. And although the episode was written long before his passing, it’s nice to know something he came up with is now official Star Trek canon.

Taika Waititi May Direct a New JUDGE DREDD Film

While it looks like Taika Waititi’s live-action remake of Akira may never happen, the director of Thor: Ragnarok and JoJo Rabbit is looking to reboot Judge Dredd for the big screen. This is part of a package together with his longtime friend, screenwriter Drew Pearce, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The iconic British comic book series has had two attempts on the big screen before. The first, back in 1995, starred Sylvester Stallone. And it was a pretty massive flop. Another version called Dredd, written by Alex Garland and starring Karl Urban, received great reviews, but was also a financial bomb. Maybe the third time will be the charm?(Left) Taika Waititi in Free Guy (Right) Judge Dredd in 2000 AD comics. Twentieth Century Films/2000 AD

Writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra created the character of Judge Dredd back in 1977. He first appeared in the pages of the weekly British anthology series 2000 AD. Many iconic writers got their start in 2000 AD, including Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, and Garth Ennis. In the series, Judge Joseph Dredd is a police officer in Mega-City One, a dystopian future city. Dredd was part of a law enforcement corps that allows its officers to be judge, jury, and executioner. The stories were satirical, and one could easily see how they’d be relevant to today’s society.

According to the original report, the new pitch from Waititi and Pearce is drawing inspiration more from the original comics than previous films. Their take will also lean a lot more into the dark and satirical humor of those classic comic books. Of course, it also has to function as a big spectacle blockbuster that can potentially make hundreds of millions. The goal is to see the new movie launch a Judge Dredd universe, one that can extend to spin-off movies and TV series. We’ll see if this time, Taika Waititi has the magic touch to make Judge Dredd work for mainstream audiences.

CAPTAIN PLANET Live-Action Series Heading to Netflix

You might not remember, given he hasn’t been around for about 25 years, but Captain Planet is a hero who’ll take pollution down to zero. Maybe if he’d stuck around after his cartoon’s 113 episodes from 1990 to 1992, he actually might have made good on that bold assertion. But, alas. Ted Turner co-created Captain Planet and the Planeteers as an animated series in an effort to make environmentalism cooler. Results vary, but it hasn’t stopped people from wanting to bring it back. The newest attempt, according to Deadline, is a live-action series on Netflix from Greg Berlanti and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way.Captain Planet flies toward the camera while the Planeteers flank him.Warner Bros.

DiCaprio had attempted to make a feature film version of the property as far back as 2016. That movie had a script from Jono Matt and Glen Powell (yes, that Glen Powell). That project was originally at Paramount. As you might have noticed, such a movie never happened. Eventually, the rights to the property reverted back to Warner Bros, who bought all the Turner catalog many years earlier. (That’s why WB owns the Hanna-Barbera library, for example.)

This new series will feature Mrs. Davis co-creator/executive producer Tara Hernandez as writer. DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson from Appian Way will executive produce the Captain Planet live-action series alongside Berlanti Prods.’ Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman. Powell is no longer involved but sources say Matt will also serve as producer.

The original Captain Planet and the Planeteers came about right as the ’90s kicked off, at a time when various environmental groups were making a huge push to clean up the Earth. “Reduce, reuse, recycle” was a common refrain from my youth. Ted Turner along with activist and filmmaker Barbara Powell. The concept focused on a group of five young people from different continents. Gaia, the spirit of the Earth, bestows upon them each a ring which calls forth a different element. Earth (literally the ground), fire, wind, water, and heart…which is not an element, but is a fifth thing. When one of the various pollution-themed supervillains gets to be too much for the kids, they can combine their powers to summon Captain Planet.

With Ted Turner’s money, the series was able to secure some big name supporting cast members at the eco-villains. Jeff Goldblum, Meg Ryan, James Coburn, and Martin Sheen all provided villain voices…for the first season. After that, voice actors took over once the show lost some of its newness. LeVar Burton provided the voice of the team’s leader Kwame while Whoopi Goldberg and Margot Kidder split duties as Gaia.

No word yet on when the series will hit Netflix, nor who might appear. The biggest question is whether Captain Planet himself will keep his trademark flattop mullet.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS Director Says Pedro Pascal’s Mister Fantastic Will Lead the Avengers

Who will lead the Avengers in Avengers: Doomsday? We’ve got one team led by Sam Wilson/Captain America, and another presumably led by Yelena Belova. But someone’s gotta lead both teams together in their battle against Doctor Doom. And according to The Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman, the person taking charge of the Avengers will be none other than Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards aka Mister Fantastic. Here’s what Shakman told Variety during an interview:

He goes from being the nerdy scientist who’s locked away in the lab, to the husband and the father who’d do anything to protect his family, to the guy who’s leading the Avengers.

Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.Marvel Studios

The leader of the Fantastic Four leading the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes? Actually, there is a Marvel Comics precedent for this in canon. In the late ’80s, many members left the Avengers, after a period of upheaval. So in 1988’s Avengers #300, Steve Rogers put together a new team, with himself, Thor, Gilgamesh (who you may remember from Eternals), and Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman. At the time, Reed Richards and Susan Storm had left the FF to focus on being parents to their child Franklin. But they quickly un-retired at the behest of Captain America. Although Cap was technically the field leader, it was clear that Reed was the brains of the operation.

Cover art for Avengers #300 from 1988.Marvel Comics

However, this Avengers roster was short-lived. And when we say “short-lived,” we mean it lasted a mere four issues. By the end of Avengers #303, Reed and Sue left the Avengers to return to the Fantastic Four. Although they did remain reservists, helping out during big catastrophes. Still, if the MCU version of Reed Richards leads the team, one can’t say that it’s not comics-accurate. Besides, if the main villain is Victor von Doom, then it probably should be Reed Richards going head-to-head with him. We’ll find out how this all shakes out when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters in December 2026.

That is the Doctor Who way, after all. So, what can we expect from this series and when will it materialize on our screens? image of two main characters from land between war and seaJason Dimmock/Michael Wharley

The series is starting to give us some details via an official synopsis and a trailer. Here’s what this series is about:

“When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.”

And here’s a short trailer as well. It looks like we might get a human and Sea Devil romance:

“There’s a race that lives beneath the oceans—they wake up, and they see the state of the oceans, that we have put it in,” explains show creator and writer Russell T Davies. “We have wrecked the place, and it is war—war on an epic scale.”

According to Davies, this miniseries will have five parts and explore what happens on Earth when the Doctor isn’t around.

Behind the Scenes

The War Between the Land and the Sea will be written by its creator (and current Doctor Who showrunner) Russell T Davies. Pete McTighe will also join him as a writer for the Disney+ series. And, we can assume that Davies will also serve as its showrunner as well.

The series is led by Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Russell Tovey. Interestingly, they’ve played other characters in Doctor Who: companion Martha Jones’ sister Tish and Midshipman Alonso Frame in “Voyage of the Damned.” But in The War Between the Land and the Sea, they are both new characters. Tovey is Barclay and Mbatha is Salt.

Several Doctor Who alum are also heading to this series to reprise their UNIT roles. They include Jemma Redgrave and Alexander Devrient as Kate Stewart and her co-worker and, um, “friend” Colonel Christofer Ibrahim, respectively. Ruth Madeley is back as UNIT’s Scientific Advisor Shirley Anne Bingham and Colin McFarlane will reprise his role as General Austin Pierce from Torchwood: Children of Earth.
