Ti West and Mia Goth’s MAXXXINE Sets Summer Release Date

Hold onto your hats, kids. There’s more to come from director Ti West and his X series of movies. Yes, A24 officially greenlit MaXXXine, the third movie in the bonkers horror franchise from the director. And we have our first look at Mia Goth reprising her role as the titular Maxine alongside Halsey. MaXXXine also officially has a release date. Per Deadline, the movie will release on July 5.

You can even watch a teaser trailer for MaXXXine below. The X horror movie delight never stops.

According to a release, Ti West will write and direct MaXXXine. A synopsis for MaXXXine shares:

The film follows Maxine (Goth), after the events of X, as the sole survivor who continues her journey towards fame setting out to make it as an actress in 1980s Los Angeles.

We love a sole survivor, that’s for sure. And we love Ti West’s horror movies even more. Although MaXXXine‘s trailer doesn’t reveal much to us, it’s fun to see. Well, we guess now we won’t have to wave goodbye to the franchise indefinitely after we watch Pearl.

As for the rest of MaXXXine‘s cast, it is finally coming together. Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Lily Collins, Halsey, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon have come aboard the film. Their roles have not yet been revealed.

For now, the second movie in the X franchise, Pearl, is available to watch “It is a prequel set decades before the grisly events of X, Mia Goth returns as the future psycho-biddy Pearl, here a starry-eyed farm girl with a short fuse and a deadly ambition.” As you get excited by the prospect of MaXXXine, don’t forget to check out our review of Pearl, here. And our review of X, here.

We can’t wait to see what X‘s third movie has in stock for us. If we had to guess, we’d say… something bloody, chaotic, but absolutely incredible. After all, what’s bloodier than an actress trying to make it in LA? Here’s to you MaXXXine.

THE WILD ROBOT Shares Stunning Trailer, Cast Includes Nyong’o, Pascal, and Hamill

We have a feeling we’re about to really cry. And we mean we’ll cry in the way that only comes after watching a gorgeous animated movie that’s really designed to crush our hearts. In The Wild Robot trailer, we meet ROZZUM unit 7134, “Roz” for short, and watch as it begins its journey of growth, change, and probably tragedy. There’s just no way to avoid falling for a cute robotic creature that wants to befriend animals. We know something so sweet can’t last, and still, we’re already in love. If that weren’t enough, the animation for this movie is impossibly stunning. And on top of all of that the voice cast for The Wild Robot is absolutely stuffed with talent. The fact that The Wild Robot includes Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, and Mark Hamill barely scratches the surface of the talent at play.

Take a look at The Wild Robot‘s full trailer below and see some of the magic for yourself.

The Wild Robot‘s Trailer and Synopsis

Oh, Roz. You’re just so earnest and cute in The Wild Robot‘s trailer. We love watching you learn and develop bonds. But what does your future hold? Heartbreak, as all things that feel will eventually experience? Loss? We hope not. We just want Roz to play with birds and gallop with deer to its heart’s content.

The Wild Robot Trailer Roz and ButterfliesDreamWorks Animation

As we marvel at the animation in The Wild Robot‘s trailer, we can also take a look at its official synopsis. DreamWorks Animation shares:

From DreamWorks Animation comes a new adaptation of a literary sensation, Peter Brown’s beloved, award-winning, #1 New York Times bestseller, The Wild Robot.

The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot—ROZZUM unit 7134, “Roz” for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.

An adoptive parent! Oh no. Oh yes. We guess we’ll just have to wait for The Wild Robot to release to know for sure what we’ll end up feeling. In the meanwhile, we’ve already adopted this wild robot into our hearts and will be replaying the trailer over and over.

The Wild Robot‘s CastThe Wild Robot trailer Roz and Forest AnimalsDreamWorks Animation

Emotions aside, The Wild Robot‘s cast is absolutely stacked with star power. We don’t yet get to hear any of the performances in store for us in The Wild Robot‘s trailer aside from Lupita Nyong’o. But we can rest assured that when we do hear this film’s voice cast in action, it will be a marvelous experience.

A release shares of The Wild Robot‘s cast:

The Wild Robot stars Academy Award® winner Lupita Nyong’o (Us, The Black Panther franchise) as robot Roz; Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, The Mandalorian) as fox Fink; Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek, Best in Show) as opossum Pinktail; Oscar® nominee Bill Nighy (Living, Love Actually) as goose Longneck; Kit Connor (Heartstopper, Rocketman) as gosling Brightbill and Oscar® nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once, this summer’s The Fall Guy) as Vontra, a robot that will intersect with Roz’s life on the island.

The film also features the voice talents of Emmy winning pop-culture icon Mark Hamill (Star Wars franchise, The Boy and the Heron), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows, The SpongeBob Movie franchise) and Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee Ving Rhames (Mission: Impossible films, Pulp Fiction).

Let’s just recap. Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, and more will feature in this movie. It seems unbelievable. But we’ll gladly take it.

It’s worth mentioning that Lupita Nyong’o also performs “What a Wonderful World” in The Wild Robot‘s trailer. Truly iconic.

The Wild Robot‘s Release Date and MoreThe Wild Robot trailer Roz and bird familyDreamWorks Animation

The Wild Robot does not yet have an official release date. Instead, we merely know the movie is “coming soon.”

Additionally, a release shares that the movie is “A powerful story about the discovery of self, a thrilling examination of the bridge between technology and nature and a moving exploration of what it means to be alive and connected to all living things, The Wild Robot is written and directed by three-time Oscar® nominee Chris Sanders—the writer-director of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon, The Croods, and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch—and is produced by Jeff Hermann (DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby 2: Family Business; co-producer, Kung Fu Panda franchise).”

Colin Farrell Isn’t Sweet in SUGAR’s Intense Trailer

There are many male archetypes I love in TV and movies. There’s the (mostly) quiet and/or brooding guy who is hella stylish and can whup anyone’s butt, like John Wick. He’s silent but deadly. I also love a murder mystery with an absolutely brilliant (and perhaps chaotic) yet mysterious detective at its center. So you bet I’m totally into the obviously hot Colin Farrell playing a detective who can hold his own in a fight. And he’s wearing a classic black suit, a staple in any gentleman’s closet. His name is John Sugar, but there’s nothing sweet about this trailer for Apple TV+’s upcoming series Sugar

Sugar takes us to Los Angeles and into the life of Farrell’s character John, who knows how to find a missing person. He’s full of secrets, ready to shoot, a little flirty, a lot brooding, and obviously a dog lover. A movie is almost always made better by a dog because dogs are awesome. These facts (and the trailer) are enough to make me want to watch Sugar when hits streaming. But here’s a synopsis to help you decide:

Starring and executive produced by Farrell, “Sugar” is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture, and television history: the private detective story. Academy Award-nominee Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.

What Is the Premiere Date for Apple TV+’s Sugar?Colin Farrell sits behind the wheel of an old school car wearing a suit and tie in sugar trailer Apple TV+

Sugar’s first two episodes of its eight episode season will hit Apple TV+ on April 5. The remainder of the season will see new episodes release every Friday.

Max’s Password-Sharing Crackdown Will Also Launch This Year

Remember when the words “password sharing crackdown” weren’t a part of our vocabulary as a meaningful phrase? If it seems like just yesterday, it’s because it was. We first heard the term almost exactly two years ago, when Netflix turned its eye on users sharing account passwords, and they transformed from a seemingly reasonable facet of streaming to a new source of income. And, of course, given Netflix’s success in converting their password-sharing crackdown into revenue, other streamers are warming to the idea. Disney+ and Hulu have announced users will no longer be able to share passwords sooner rather than later. And now, Max has also revealed a password-sharing crackdown of its own. Max’s password-sharing fight will begin this year and roll out in earnest in 2025.

daenerys smiles meanly on Game of Thrones, for Max password sharing crackdown articleMax

Is enough not really enough? What will it be next, eye-tracking technology to ensure only paid users are gazing at the screen? We’ll just stop ourselves before we give streamers ideas. But password-sharing crackdowns certainly show no sign of slowing. Warner Bros. Discovery streaming and gaming chief J.B. Perrette discussed Max’s plans for their own password-related efforts at Morgan Stanley’s Technology, Media, and Telecom conference, which we saw via The Wrap.

Perrette noted that a Max password-sharing crackdown “initiative would launch later this year with a broader rollout in 2025.” And shared, “We think, relative to the scale of our business, it’s a meaningful opportunity.” And we bet that it is. But if that is the case, we have to imagine consumers are becoming tired of more and more corners being cut in exchange for higher and higher prices.

Our Flag Means Death with scared Stede Bonnet, for Max password sharing crackdown articleMax

Something like a password-sharing crackdown, however meaningful Max and others might find it to be in the moment, doesn’t actually seem like an avenue of sustainable growth. And why is it so imperative companies grow all the time, anyway? That’s one rhetorical question, for sure. In the meanwhile, we’re sure Max won’t be the last streamer to try to stop passwords from being shared. So we’ll strap in and see what happens.

Kong Becomes a Green Lantern in JUSTICE LEAGUE VS. GODZILLA VS. KONG

In the DC Universe, many worthy heroes have wielded the power of the Green Lantern power ring. Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, to name but a few. And of course, alien Lanterns like Kilowog. Once, an entire living planet was a Green Lantern, named Mogo. Well, DC’s latest G.L. isn’t quite as big as a planet. But he’s big enough to climb the Empire State Building. Yes, in the upcoming series finale of Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong, issue #7, King Kong will become a Green Lantern. You can see him glow with the emerald power of Oa in the image from DC Comics and Legendary Comics down below:

You can read the official synopsis for Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong’s final issue, by Brian Buccellato, Christian Duce, and Luis Guerrero, right here:

On June 25, the crossover that no one expected reaches its climax with the release of Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #7, available at participating comic book shops and e-tailers. In this series finale, two worlds face annihilation in an all-out war between the DCU and Legendary’s Monsterverse! With the help of Godzilla and Kong, can the Justice League win a battle against a re-formed Mechagodzilla and a new, even more deadly, hybrid Titan—a byproduct of two worlds, the likes of which neither universe has ever seen!

Luckily for Kong, he doesn’t have to wear a giant silly domino mask as Green Lantern. So how will everyone’s favorite big hairy ape earn the power ring? Well, traditionally in DC lore, to earn the power of a Lantern ring, one has to be almost totally fearless. The Guardians of the Universe choose only those without fear to represent their sector of space. Considering that Kong has taken on Godzilla multiple times, and now heroes like Superman and the Flash, we think he’s safely earned the title “fearless.” We just want to know how he recited the Green Lantern oath. Is it just roars?

The COMMUNITY Movie Will Film This Year, According to Joel McHale

Original reporting by Melissa Miller.

The prophecy foretold six seasons and a movie, and now that will come to pass. The Community movie is coming to Peacock! Thanks to a tweet from series star Joel McHale and a report in Variety, we finally know it’s happening. We also know that series creator Dan Harmon will write and produce the movie. However, with the recent writers’ strike, things were on hold for a while. McHale revealed to Variety that Harmon and co-writer Andrew Guest were almost done with the script and had a director in mind before everything came on a halt in May. Harmon, McHale, and other members of the WGA were on strike because the union did not reach a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) over many issues, including streaming residuals. However, now that the writer and actor strikes have resolved, it sounds like the Community movie is back on track.

Creator Dan Harmon recently shared with Variety that the script is almost done. He noted, “I can confirm Donald Glover’s report that I told him the script was done, but I will also say Donald’s sources are so unreliable because the script is always ‘almost done. What can I tell you about it — it’s set on the campus of Greendale Community College. I’m super excited about it, and we’re almost done.”

Meanwhile, star Joel McHale also shared that the script for the film is done as far as he knows, adding a further update about the movie’s filming. Deadline notes, “McHale said it’s his belief that the Community movie will shoot “this year.” He’ll be “shocked,” he said, if it doesn’t.” And McHale offered, “I really do think it’s happening this year, and probably next week. It’s basically working around Donald [Glover]’s schedule.”

Community study groupNBC

Casting news isn’t official, but McHale tagged fellow stars Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Yvette Nicole Brown, Danny Pudi, and Ken Jeong in his post, as well as Gillian Anderson (but we assume he meant to tag Gillian Jacobs, who played Britta). The series finale gave our beloved characters a nudge towards their next steps in life, but we’ll be perfectly happy to see them all back together at Greendale Community College. Three cheers for the Community movie.

— Joel McHale (@joelmchale) September 30, 2022

The show fulfilled half of Abed’s prophecy of “six seasons and a movie” with a final season on Yahoo! after five seasons on NBC. Its 110 episodes, all named like community college course titles, that mostly hit the mark of comedic and meta, takes on adult friendships. We cheered for the tight-knit study group through all the years of puppets, paintball, and pillow forts.

Community gained new popularity, and talk of the movie heated up when the show landed on Netflix in 2020. But it’s been part of the show’s lexicon since long before the series finale in 2015. It’s always a fun rewatch, and it’s never too late to watch the series for the first time.

Donald Glover as Troy in Community, confirming he's still planning on being in the Community movieNBC

We can’t wait to hear official casting news for the Community movie. Will we finally learn what happened to Troy Barnes after he sailed off with LeVar Burton and was never heard from again? Donald Glover did join in when the cast reunited for a virtual table read in the early days of the pandemic. Happily, Dan Harmon has confirmed Glover would return for the movie. Glover himself also recently told The Hollywood Reporter he was still planning on the Community movie, saying:

Yeah, [Dan Harmon] told me what he wanted, and I was like, “This sounds great.” It’s a college reunion, but Abed [Danny Pudi’s character] is like this big director now, and basically this is his magnum opus. I’m like, “This sounds f**king tight.”

Maybe we’re not living in Abed’s darkest timeline after all.

Tim Blake Nelson Cut From DUNE: PART TWO, No Deleted Scenes Will Release From Film

After a very long wait, Dune hit theaters in the fall of 2021 to both rave reviews and big box office. This was despite bowing on HBO Max at the same time as its theatrical debut. But Dune was really just Dune: Part One. The first film only covered the first half of Frank Herbert’s epic 1965 novel. Luckily, the rest of the story is on the way. Dune: Part Two was officially announced on October 26, 2021.

Although Dune: Part Two is a behemoth of a movie, not everything was able to make it onto our screens. However, we don’t expect to see what didn’t make it into the final cut. Denis Villeneuve shares with Collider, “I’m a strong believer that when it’s not in the movie, it’s dead. Sometimes I remove shots and I say, ‘I cannot believe I’m cutting this out. I feel like a samurai opening my gut. It’s painful, so I cannot go back after that and create a Frankenstein and try to reanimate things that I killed. It’s too painful. When it’s dead, it’s dead, and it’s dead for a reason. But yes, it is a painful project, but it is my job. The movie prevails. I’m very severe in the editing room. I’m not thinking about my ego, I’m thinking about the movie … I kill darlings, and it’s painful for me.”

Sadly, that means that some actors who had Dune: Part Two roles won’t get to see their performances widely shared. One such actor, Tim Blake Nelson, shared with MovieWeb that his undiscoled role from the second Dune movie didn’t make it into the film’s final cut. He reveals, “I don’t think I’m at liberty to say what the scene was. I’d leave that to Denis if he wants to talk about it. I had a great time over there shooting it. And then he had to cut it because he thought the movie was too long. And I am heartbroken over that, but there’s no hard feelings. I loved it, and I can’t wait to do something else with him and we certainly plan to do that.” We guess that’s just the business. Maybe we’ll see Nelson in a potential Dune 3. And we’ll definitely see him soon in Captain America: Brave New World as The Leader. If you want to hear our speculation on who Nelson may have played in Dune: Part Two, check out our video above.

Here’s everything else we know so far about Dune: Part Two.

TitleChani holds Paul's face in her hands in the Dune: Part Two trailer.Warner Bros/Legendary

The official name of the movie is Dune: Part Two.

Dune: Part Two‘s Plot

The official plot synopsis from Warner Bros. and Legendary for Dune: Part Two reads as follows:

This follow-up film will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.

If you’re a fan of Frank Herbert’s Dune, this all sounds like a pretty faithful adaptation of the second half of his novel. And unlike David Lynch’s 1984 version of Dune, this packed second half will now have time to breathe. And who knows? Maybe we’ll see elements of the later Dune novels pop up a wee bit early.

For now, we can enjoy Dune: Part Two‘s first trailer, which highlight a crucial book scene: Paul riding on a sandworm.

The second trailer for the film shows more of Paul and Chani and the Fremen’s fight.

The chief takeaway is that Dune: Part Two is both a love story and a war movie, and we can expect both parts to shine.

Dune: Part Two‘s Cast

Almost the entire original cast from Dune is back for Dune: Part Two. At least if their character survived, that is. This includes Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, the “Kwisatz Haderach,” and Zendaya as his Fremen paramour Chani. Javier Bardem also returns as Chani’s father, Fremen leader Stilgar. Paul’s very pregnant mother Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) also returns for Dune: Part Two. Josh Brolin is back as Paul’s mentor Gurney Halleck, as is Stephen McKinley Henderson as Thufir Hawat, the loyal Mentat to House Atreides.

Stellan Skarsgård reprises his role as the sadistic Baron Harkonnen, as does Dave Bautista as the Baron’s loyal lackey and nephew Glossu Rabban. Charlotte Rampling’s character, the Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother, is also slated to return. New cast members include Florence Pugh (Princess Irulan) Austin Butler (Feyd Rautha), and Christopher Walken (Emperor Shadddam IV). They are joined by Léa Seydoux (Lady Margot) and Souheila Yacoub as the Fremen warrior Shishakli.

Christopher Walken with white hair in Dune: Part TwoWarner Bros./Legendary Pictures

Of course, certain major characters died in the first film, and are not scheduled to appear in Dune: Part Two. These include Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho and Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides. But there could be surprise flashbacks. So don’t count them all out just yet. We may yet see them on the sands of Arrakis. Most recently, Deadline reported Tim Blake Nelson joined the cast in an unknown role.

Just as he was for Dune, director Denis Villeneuve is back behind the camera for Dune: Part Two. Jon Spaihts wrote the script for the second chapter of the story. Hans Zimmer also returned to score the sequel.

Dune: Part Two‘s Release Date

Dune: Part Two hits theaters on March 1, 2024. It will release in IMAX 70 mm as well as in IMAX and normal theatrical formats.

Chilean STAR WARS TV Broadcasts Cut Beer Ads Into the Films and It’s Hilarious

The original Star Wars trilogy has been a perennial of broadcast TV marathons all over the world for decades. They’ve shown them in every country, and in just about every language. But recently, videos from old broadcasts of the OT from Chile have resurfaced online, which aired back in 2003. In these showings of classic Star Wars, they didn’t cut to traditional commercial breaks. Instead, they incorporated cuts into the films which made it seem like characters from the movie were advertising a regional beer brand called Cerveza Cristal. They’re fairly hilarious and luckily someone shared these lost treasures recently on social media.

You can watch these down below:

Around 2003 in Chile, when the original trilogy of Star Wars began airing on television there, they did this funny thing to avoid cutting to commercial breaks. They stitched the commercials into the films themselves. Here is one of them, with the English dub added in. pic.twitter.com/wC7N2vPNvv

— Windy 🛸 (@heyitswindy) March 2, 2024

So, how do we know it’s real, and not an elaborate prank? Well, thanks to a 2004 report in The Guardian (via IGN), we learned that Lucasfilm was not too happy about these edits. Look, if anyone is going to make controversial edits to the original Star Wars films, it’s going to be George Lucas, not some beer company. Lucasfilm got its lawyers involved. But the report proves this was something that really happened once. Sadly, Obi-Wan Kenobi having a Cerveza Cristal tucked away in his Jedi robes, or the Death Star having a cooler hidden in the tractor-beam power grid never happened again.

So far, we’ve seen just the four Cerveza Cristal Star Wars beer ad cuts online. Hopefully, more turn up. I mean, none in the Mos Eisley Cantina? The one place in the Star Wars films where an alien reaching for a cold one wouldn’t feel totally abrupt? They must have done that one, right? Perhaps R2-D2 serving them on Jabba’s sail barge? That also seems like a no-brainer. Certainly more than Obi-Wan keeping a Cerveza Cristal in the same compartment as Anakin’s lightsaber. We have a feeling that even if those didn’t exist, someone out there is going to make them now. A few years back, someone even cut fake Cerveza ads into The Force Awakens! We expect the internet to get on this right quick.

DUNE: AWAKENING Direct Event Shares New Trailer and Game Footage

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two once again showed the only thing more brutal than Harkonnens is Arrakis itself. Surviving that harsh desert planet is challenging enough for natives, let alone outsiders. That is, it’s hard if you actually step foot on the Fremen home world. Fortunately you’ll soon be able to travel to the land of sandworms and spice without needing to strap on a stillsuit. Funcom is bringing the iconic planet to you with its upcoming open-world MMO Dune: Awakening, and the game’s first Direct event showed fans just how immersive this version of Arrakis will be in a new trailer.

With a whole lot of natives heading to theaters on this planet to see Dune: Part Two, Funcom capitalized on the film’s release with a display of what gamers can expect from Dune: Awakening. Soe Gschwind hosted the first episode of the game’s new online Direct series. It included insight from the creative team, all-new game footage, and a trailer. It also offered insight into game mechanics and features. (Including how a weekly coriolis storm will completely reform the game’s terrain!) And it also showed a featurette that explained how the game takes inspiration from both Herbert’s book series and Villeneuve’s films.

While players will be eager to hear about character and weapons creation, as well as different game play options, long time fans will be most excited to see yet another interpretation of Frank Herbert’s world come to life. Every image and clip from the game looks absolutely beautiful. Even the sandworms look majestic. Majestic and terrifying, yes, but still majestic.

Of course, Arrakis might be beautiful to look at, but it’s not an easy place to survive. That will still be true in the game, where players—whether working together or against one another—will test their mettle. Here’s the official synopsis from Funcom for Dune: Awakening to bring the game trailer into focus:

Rise from survival to dominance on the most dangerous planet in the universe. Dune: Awakening combines the grit and creativity of sandbox survival games with the social interactivity of a large, persistent multiplayer game to create a unique and ambitious Open World Survival MMO.

Eager Dune fans can sign up for the game’s beta test, but Awakening still does not have a release date. Funcom says it’s not rushing it out until it’s ready. We’re bummed we have to wait, too. But we cna always use this extra time to store up on water. Not because we’ll run out of it on Earth, but because we might not want to get up while playing.
