What Marvel’s New Plans Tell Us About DAREDEVIL Season 3

Fans of Marvel’s Netflix series are going to have to wait until 2018 for Daredevil‘s third season to drop, but that isn’t stopping Marvel from re-positioning the Daredevil titles to take advantage of the show. That’s right, “titles.” For the first time, Marvel is actually treating the Daredevil comic as a franchise, complete with three new ongoing spinoff series.

Bleeding Cool was the first to report the news from MCM London Comic Con, where Marvel revealed that the Daredevil ongoing title will be joined by Elektra, Kingpin, and Bullseye series in February 2017. Elektra has had a few ongoing series before, but she was largely on her own and separated from Daredevil’s corner of the Marvel Universe. Elektra’s inclusion here (in an outfit very similar to the one that she wore on the Netflix series) suggests that she’ll once again have a much bigger role in the life Matt Murdock’s heroic alter ego. The second season finale of Daredevil hinted that we’d soon see Elektra again, despite her apparent death. Marvel also has a long history of changing the costumes in its books to better match the latest Hollywood adaptation. Elektra is just the latest character to experience that trend.

The fact that both Kingpin and Bullseye are getting their own comics is surprising, as Marvel doesn’t do a lot of books with villains as the leading characters. It also implies that both Bullseye and Kingpin will have a role in Daredevil season three. (It’s been expected that Vincent D’Onofrio would be back for the third season, as he often speaks about how much he enjoys playing Wilson Fisk.) Bullseye was a curious omission from the Daredevil show, because he’s one of the title character’s most iconic adversaries. It’s hard to imagine Marvel greenlighting a new Bullseye comic if it didn’t have a heads up that the TV division already had plans for him.

The whole point of getting the Daredevil comics to resemble the Netflix show is that Marvel’s publishing side would like to reach the casual fans who only watch the live-action series. By the time that 2018 rolls around, Marvel should have at least two trade paperbacks for each of the new series to sell in bookstores. And that’s why we’re pretty confident that they’re also window of what we can expect from Daredevil season 3.

What do you think about Marvel’s plans for the Daredevil comics? Use your radar senses in the comment section below!

Disney Releases Full MOANA Track “How Far I’ll Go” Sung by Alessia Cara

If I were ever hired for the job of finding someone who didn’t like Lin-Manuel Miranda, I would have job security for life, as that seems like an impossible task. The singer-songwriter is showing that there definitely is life after Hamilton—not only did he have a successful hosting gig on SNL, but he is also helping write the score for the upcoming Disney film Moana, starring Dwayne Johnson as the demi-god Maui and newcomer Auli’i Cravalho as the titular hero.

Reported by Vulture, the above clip debuts the first full song from the film, entitled “How Far I’ll Go.” Beautifully sung by pop star Alessia Cara, “How Far I’ll Go” represents Moana’s point of view at the beginning of the movie. It talks about how even though she has responsibilities to her island and people, she still wants to go out and explore the oceans.

Combining this song with the clip of “You’re Welcome” we saw earlier this week, it’s apparent that Moana will be continuing the tradition of Disney songs that instill both humor and inspiration. With Miranda at the helm, I have full confidence that the rest of the songs in this film will be just as great. Moana, directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, will open in theaters November 23rd.

So what do you think? Does Disney have another inspirational hit on their hands? Will the combination of two of the most likable people ever, Miranda and The Rock, bring the internet to its knees? Let me know on Twitter or sound off in the comments below.

Bill Murray Sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” at the World Series Like Daffy Duck

Forget the fact that the Chicago Cubs haven’t won a World Series since 1908. Before this post-season they hadn’t even made the World Series since 1945. That’s over 70 years without hosting Major League Baseball‘s premier event, over seven decades since the Wrigley Field faithfuls got to watch their beloved Cubbies play for the ultimate prize. So last night’s Game 3 in Chicago was kind of a big deal, and that’s why they called on their most famous mega-fan, Bill Murray, to lead their traditional Seventh Inning Stretch sing-a-long of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”

So of course he sang it like Daffy Duck.

Yes, the most important game at Wrigley Field in over 70 years and Bill Murray elected to sing it with a Daffy Duck lisp. Was it weird? Yes. Did it make any sense? Not a lick. Was it totally awesome? Most definitely.

bill-murray-world-series

But like any good Cubs fan, before beginning his unusual rendition, he made sure to remind the rest of the ballpark that, besides being time to loosen up their muscles, the Seventh Inning Stretch was also the last time they could purchase beer. Considering the Cubs were shut out by the Cleveland Indians 1-0 in a super tense nail biter, they needed it.

And they might need more, since the Indians, who themselves haven’t won the World Series since 1948, now lead the best-of-seven series 2-1, with their ace Corey Kluber, who shut the Cubs down in Game 1, going tonight in Game 4.

Trailing in the series and facing a the opposition’s best starting pitcher? There’s only one way to describe the situation for Cubs fans right now: dethpicable.

Could any celebrity besides Bill Murray get away with such a weird performance? Tell us who else has that kind of cache in the comments below.

DOCTOR STRANGE Promo Introduces Us to Dogster Strange and the Pooch Avengers

I’m not sure what it is, but we all become blithering idiots whenever we see pets dressed up in adorable costumes. This is always the case even though we know that every single animal hates being forced to wear them, and would much rather be running around naked and sniffing each other. And when it’s pets dressed up as superheroes? Well, we become even bigger idiots.

So with that in mind, Marvel Studios has released a new promo online for the upcoming Doctor Strange film. The video features the movie’s star Benedict Cumberbatch alongside a bunch of adorable pups dressed up as the Avengers, and of course a pug as the Doctor himself. And just in time for Halloween too. You can see the promo in question in the tweet down below.

The top dogs of Halloween. #DogsterStrange #NoPugIntended pic.twitter.com/FJtUiBCtRa

— Doctor Strange (@DrStrange) October 28, 2016

I’ll admit the above video is all kinds of adorable, but I think that “Dogster Strange,” as they call him, gets outshined in the cuteness department by the pooch in the Captain America outfit. Yeah, I know Dogster Strange is a pug, and pugs are the cutest, but just look at this Cap dog. I can’t even handle it.

Doctor Strange is finally coming out in less than a week (read our review here), and Disney and Marvel Studios are pulling out all the stops to make sure people go see it, including resorting to dressing up puppies in ridiculous costumes. But hey, whatever gets butts in seats. Doctor Strange stars Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mads Mikkelsen, Benedict Wong, and Rachel McAdams. The film officially hits theaters on Friday, November 4.

What do you think of the canine Doctor Strange? New costume idea for your pet for Halloween maybe? Let us know down below in the comments.

Nine strange things you didn’t know about Doctor Strange:

Scream at a Wall: CAR BOMB! THE MENZINGERS! DAUGHTERS!

Greetings, ghouls! It’s that time again. Time for a recap of this week’s best hardcore, metal, and punk rock. We dug through the record crates to find the new tunes we think you need to spin and rage to. Looking for a few new death metal tunes to set the mood for some tricks or treats? Got you covered. Need some grindcore to get the Devil’s Night started right? Say no more. Strap in kiddies—let’s get spooky.

giphy

Car Bomb’s new album Meta is finally upon us, and it is a monster. Chaotic, heavy, and slick (really, really slick), Car Bomb is reaching new heights here. It’s like cocktail made from one part The Dillinger Escape Plan, one part Gojira, and one part broken, bloody glass. Furious doesn’t even begin to describe this stuff; it’s brimming over with anger and fury. This album is just fan-freaking-tastic. Make sure you check out this insanity; it’ll wake you up in the morning. It’s like injecting espresso straight into your heart.

The Menzingers are back and they sound sorta… happy? Sure, the lyrics to their new track “Bad Catholics” are a downer, but you can’t deny that the song is upbeat sounding. There’s something uplifting about this tune (as long as you don’t listen to the words). “Bad Catholics” is the first track off their new album, which is due early next year. When it comes to earnest punk rock with soul, nobody does it better than The Menzingers. We’re crazy excited for a new record from these dudes.

When it comes to setting the mood for a spooky evening, Esben and The Witch are peerless. Old Terrors is a haunting and seductive record. It’s sexy and dark, the sort of album that draws you in and won’t let go. This is the soundtrack of a dark, empty highway, of a forgotten field blanketed in the dim glow of a starry night. It’s a truly visionary work that transports the listener; listening to Old Terrors will send you on a journey. Esben and The Witch just keep getting better and better. Old Terrors is their best work to date, which, considering the brilliant level of output from this band, is really saying something.

(Decibel)

Wow, this stuff is awesome. We’re just discovering Youth Funeral, but holy cow, right? This is some vicious and raw noise rock. They sound like METZ jamming Converge. Seriously, listen to “Unthought” below and we dare you to not pre-order the album immediately after. You can’t help it! It’s just to rad! We’re onboard with Youth Funeral. We’re drinking their Kool-Aid. We’re writing their name in blood on the wall of our apartment. Youth Funeral. For real. Listen to this band, guys. Next big thing right here.

(BrooklynVegan)

If you’re craving something of the weirder variety, check out 11Paranoias. Their track “Milk Amnesia” is violent and challenging. It’s a wall of sound that is filled with screeching guitars, feedback, wailing vocals, and thunderous drums. It starts with chaos and it ends abruptly, never giving you a chance to get comfortable. The video that accompanies the song is equally discomforting. 11Paranoias don’t sound like anybody else making music right now, and that’s something that should be celebrated. This band is so strange and unique, we can’t help but love them.

Since it’s Halloween time, we are obligated to share our favorite haunted melody of all time, “I Drink Blood” from Rocket From the Crypt. Now, just in case you don’t know, Rocket From the Crypt is literally the greatest band ever. Literally. Nobody has or will ever come close. They put on the best live show, the put out the best records, and they put the “rock” in “rock n’ roll.” This low-fi B-side sounds like it was recorded on a boombox in a garage, which is not a bad thing. As an added bonus, some intrepid YouTuber made a video montage of vampire imagery to go along with the song. So, light the candles, summon the spirits of rock, and listen to Rocket From the Crypt.

Lastly, we wanted to draw attention to the fact that one of our favorite hardcore acts is touring again. After years of inactivity, Daughters is out and about, hitting the road and talking about maybe making some new music. Their last album was released in 2010 and it’s a freaking masterpiece. It sounds as exciting and unique today as it did back then, so the prospect of new tunes form these guys is something to be very, very stoked about. That’s right. Stoked. We said it. We are stoked and we are stoked and we don’t care who knows it.

Oh, and it’s worth noting that Daughters are touring with Loma Prieta and The Body. That is one hell of an amazing lineup. If the shows in your town aren’t already sold, we highly suggest you get your butt out of the house and go get your ears pummeled by these supremely awesome bands.

Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire’s AD: AFTER DEATH Was Worth the Wait (Review)

It’s been a long road to first issue of Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire’s AD: After Death. Originally announced as a graphic novel set to release in the fall of 2015, the book slipped passed that planned publication date and seemed to disappear from everyone’s radar. Rumors began to swirl that the graphic novel had been reshaped into an ongoing series, but Image Comics stayed quiet and many of us wondered if the book would ever reach our hands, in any form at all. Well, the wait is over, and AD: After Death, the first of three prestige format issues, is hitting this fall. The good news is, this first issue certainly points to the series having been worth the wait, even if it feels like too small a piece of a larger story.

Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire are two of the biggest creators in the comic industry these days. Separately, they have created some of modern comics’ best works, so the idea of them working together is enough to get any comic fan excited. The thing is, AD: After Death #1 is not exactly a comic book. Sure, there are plenty of pages of comic book storytelling in this issue, but a huge chunk of this issue is prose with accompanying pictures. It’s like a picture book for adults.

Snyder’s prose is incredibly strong, and Lemire’s minimalist art is beautiful. But it’s a strange format for a single issue, even an oversized one like this. It definitely feels like you are reading the opening of a graphic novel rather than an episodic chapter of a sequential art monthly. The ending comes abruptly and without a big cliffhanger; it seems almost as though AD: After Death was constructed as a standalone piece and then chopped into three parts.

All that said, AD: After Death #1 is a wonderfully unique and engaging experience. We spend the bulk of this issue getting to know our main character, and it’s time well spent. We can’t stress enough how fantastic Snyder’s prose is in company with Lemire’s art. It really is an experience unlike any other comic out there and that is something to be admired. While the full scope of the story is incredibly difficult to grasp in this first issue, Snyder and Lemire keep you deeply captivated with the life of Jonah Cook.

Reading AD: After Death is a haunting and beautiful experience. Lemire’s art often has a dream-like quality, floating like smoke through the page. During the books’ extended flashback, Snyder and Lemire create an ethereal structure, a world that always seems a moment away from collapse. There’s truly something personal about AD: After Death #1, and we can only hope that continues on through the other books in the series. There is simply nothing else like this on the shelf and that’s a good thing.

Rating: 5 out of 5

DC Reveals Full New JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA Team Lineup

Hello comics fans, and welcome to your weekend edition of Comics Relief! To start things off today, we have news on the full lineup of DC Comics’ new, more diverse JLA…and there are some truly surprise members this time. Read on for all the details!

Final 3 Members of the new Justice League of America are revealed

Although four members of the new Justice League of America series were announced at the recent New York Comic Con, publisher DC Comics has now given us the full line-up of members for the new series, and rounding out the team are Black Canary, Batman (pulling double duty with the regular League), and…Lobo?!? Yes, the “Main Man” will be a member of the new JLA, a first in the popular character’s history. The three additions are joining the Ray, Vixen, Killer Frost, and the Ryan Choi version of the Atom on the team.

In an interview with IGN, writer Steve Orlando said “For some people, Lobo will be a hero. For others, he’ll be an anti-hero. It’s moving past these black and white definitions and realizing that you have to have a malleable idea to serve everyone instead of just the people in the mainstream. Lobo, I think there’s more to him than ever before.” You can see the cover for issue #1 of Justice League of America from artist Ivan Reis above. [IGN]

Mockingbird writer quits Twitter over online bullies

Chalk this story up to “we can do better, comics fandom. Mockingbird writer Chelsea Cain has deleted her Twitter account following online harassment and what she describes as “cruelty from misogynist bullies.” (I can personally attest to some of the comments being cruel, having read them. It was pretty appalling). Cain wrote Marvel’s recently cancelled Mockingbird series, and came to comic books after being a New York Times bestselling prose author who has sold millions of novels, and said she had never experienced online harassment like this before writing comic books.

After she deleted her Twitter account, Cain’s situation gained her massive support from comics fans, as well as comic creators and even Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso. The hashtag “#StandWithChelseaCain” began trending on Twitter all week, and as a result, right now Mockingbird Vol 1: Let Me Explain is the bestselling superhero graphic novel on Amazon, and Marvel’s best seller too. In response, Marvel has now renamed and put together Mockingbird Vol 2: My Feminist Agenda collecting Mockingbird #6-8 and New Avengers #13-14, which will be out in April. So eat it, misogynists. Titan Comics brings back Tank Girl in 2017

Speaking of badass female comics characters, UK publisher Titan Comics has announced the return of ’90s indie comics icon, Tank Girl, in a new series called Tank Girl: World War Tank Girl. This will be the third chapter in the character’s current comics trilogy.

Written by co-creator Alan Martin and illustrated by Brett Parson, the three-issue series debts in February. World War Tank Girl will bring to a close the storyline that has been running through Two Girls, One Tank and the current Tank Girl: Gold series. You can see Parson’s cover for Tank Girl: World War Tank Girl #1 above. [CBR]

Star Trek: The Next Generation/Aliens crossover coming from IDW and Dark Horse

Over the years, the xenomorphs from the Alien film franchise have fought everyone from the Terminator to Superman, and now they’ll be facing off against Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Enterprise-D in a Star Trek: The Next Generation/Aliens crossover comic from IDW and Dark Horse Comics.

The series will be subtitled “Acceptable Losses”, and be written by the team of Scott and David Tipton, with art by J.K. Woodward, who previously collaborated on IDW’s 2012 mini-series Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimiliaton2. The Next Gen crew should be able to take care of those xenomorphs handily — after all, they have some experience with mindless HR Giger-esque drones hellbent on destruction. Star Trek: The Next Generation/Aliens will launch in April 2017. You can read our full story on the new comic here: [Nerdist]

Pasqual Ferry set to launch Alice in Wonderland inspired series

Veteran comic book artist Pasqual Ferry has revealed plans to release a creator-owned series called Alice, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland. This was announced via comic book crowdfunding website Spaceman Project, and Ferry has set a goal of $40,000 to bring this new comic to life.

The Spanish artist said “for many years, I used to work on my own stories and I never managed to finish them. My work in the U.S. absorbed most of my time, all of my time really. Now, after a break in my American production, I’ve finally decided to finish one of those stories.”

Although it is inspired by the original novel, Ferry says his project is “not another version of Alice in Wonderland, although it includes some of its characters and settings.” The OGN will star a different girl, who also is named Alice, whose mother uses the classic novel as a way to communicate with her young daughter. Ferry explains that “the characters from Carroll’s novel all appear in Alice’s dreams, not in reality.” Should the project be funded, it is expected to be released in March 2018. You can see early art for the potential series above. [CBR]

Marvel brings back long gone New Universe heroes

Back in the mid to late ’80s, Marvel Comics could seemingly do no wrong. That is, until 1986, when the publisher launched a “New Universe”, a whole new line of comics with new heroes. The Marvel fans outright rejected these, and sales tanked. Although some New Universe characters popped up here and there since then, it’s always seemed like the “New Coke” of comics.

But some people fondly remember the New Universe, including Ultimates creative team of Al Ewing and Christian Ward, who in Ultimates #12 this week introduced team of familiar heroes, all based on New Universe characters. Code-named The Troubleshooters, the US Government is using these characters to replace the Ultimates as a new government sanctioned team. Will these characters fare better with the public a second time around? Only time will tell. [Comics Alliance]

Caliber Comics to release five new OGNs in 2017

Longtime publisher Caliber Comics, which was recently revived after a long hiatus, has announced five new high profile OGNs for February, 2017. Among them are Renfield, from writer Gary Reed (Deadworld) and artist Galen Showman (Star Wars) about Dracula’s servant from Bram Stoker’s novel (you can see the cover above). The Tower of the Comic Book Freaks: Fourth of July, 1971, by writer/artist Ron Kasman, and SixSmiths Volume 1, from writer Jason Franks and artist J. Marc Schmidt, about a family of suburban Satanists. For more info on these, and the three other new OGNs from Caliber, click on the following link: [Bleeding Cool]

Cosplay Friday #187 – Rapunzel, Rey, and More from First Glance Photography

The number of conventions happening any given weekend always makes me do a double take. It’s a little slower this time of year, but in spring and summer, you can choose between at least two medium-sized conventions. Even if you limit your reach to one region, you’ll stay busy. That’s definitely true for Bill Ostroff, a.k.a. First Glance Photography. He has been part of the cosplay photography scene for eight years and attended several conventions in the Los Angeles area such as Anime Expo and WonderCon. He sent me examples of his work, and he captures in-the-moment, great portraits. Look at Rapunzel:

Rapunzel (Tangled)

Take a second glance at the gallery below to see more of First Glance’s work. You’ll find photos of Rey from The Force Awakens, Mad Moxxi from the Borderlands universe, Supergirl, and more. Keep tabs on future shoots from First Glance Photography by following him on Facebook. And if you’re headed to Los Angeles Comic Con this weekend (October 28-30) or other Southern California nerd gatherings, you can reach out to book a session.

Do you cosplay or take pictures of cosplayers? Then please share selections from your portfolio with me so we can talk about highlighting you in a future Cosplay Friday gallery. If you’re interested, please go ahead and email me at alratcliffe@yahoo.com with five to seven photos you’d like me to feature. Be sure to provide credits for the cosplayers or photographers for each image because credits are cool — bonus points if you include links to their Facebook pages or websites. And though I wish I knew all the geek things, I definitely don’t, so please let me know who or what is being cosplayed — I can usually figure it out, but I’ll take all the help I can get.

Bandcamping: The Best Underground Albums of October

As Election Day creeps closer and closer,/ let’s take a deep breath and enjoy the next few minutes by listening to some new music you probably won’t hear anywhere else outside of Bandcamping, our monthly dive into the finest underground albums on Bandcamp.

This time around, we have some hip-hop, some electro pop, some Americana, some indie rock… something for most tastes, basically, so let’s get to it:

5. MILKTAPE by ORPHANBOY

orphanboy-milktape

MILKTAPE by ORPHANBOY

Genre: alternative hip-hop, synthwave

If you like: Vektroid, Yung Lean

Since anybody with a laptop loaded with a digital audio workstation and a Blue Yeti microphone call call themselves a rapper, that means everybody’s out there trying something different, and it can be hard to cut though the noise. ORPHANBOY’s latest batch of tunes, however, boast bass-heavy, vaporwave-inspired production, and totally capable rapping. The DC-based rapper is self-produced, and it’s rare to find somebody who can do both and do them well while creating a tone that’s distinctly theirs.

4. HANG–UPS by menthe

menthe-hang-ups

HANG–UPS by menthe

Genre: synth pop, indie pop

If you like: CHVRCHES, Toro y Moi

Electronic music can be a big ol’ mess when it tries to combine too many different types of non-analog methodologies, but menthe achieves a balance worth exploring on their new record. Sometimes they get a bit house-y, other times it’s more akin to synthwave, and there’s even the occasional glint of R&B. It’s a dense listen that both goes all over the place and remains focused on good vibes.

3. New Rain by Drew Kohl

drew-kohl-new-rain

New Rain by Drew Kohl

Genre: country, singer-songwriter, folk, Americana

If you like: Kacey Musgraves, John Mayer, Bob Dylan

Summer is really the most appropriate time for country music, but when it’s as folky as Drew Kohl’s latest batch of tunes, we’ll take it in autumn. New Rain is filled with pleasant midtempo tunes for a sunny day, and the country influence shouldn’t be too overwhelming for those absolutely opposed to the polarizing genre.

2. Something Songs by Lovers Touch

lovers-touch-something-songs

Something Songs by Lovers Touch

Genre: indie rock, indie folk

If you like: Mac DeMarco, Pavement, Ariel Pink

Credit where it’s due: Falsetto is hard to pull off without sounding like a whiny middle schooler, but on “Found a Friend,” the highlight from Something Songs by Lovers Touch, it’s super effective, and makes for a light and comforting three minutes. Elsewhere, the group continues to vibe out, like a beach-going Neil Young (no, we don’t mean On The Beach).

1. Yuhng by Toulouse

toulouse-yuhng

Yuhng by Toulouse

Genre: indie rock, psychedelic rock

If you like: Real Estate, Tame Impala

By the time the next Bandcamping comes out, the ground will likely be covered in snow. In the meantime, it’s covered in leaves, and fall is time for reflection. The reverb-laden sound of Portugal-based Toulouse is just right for the occasion, with the crisp-weather breeziness of Real Estate combined with light psychedelia, not enough to get lost in a mess of echo, but enough to take you away for a minute in a sea of introspection.

Honorable Mentions

Dilated by Rapid Eye

Genre: hip-hop

If you like: Earl Sweatshirt, Yung Lean

The Morning EP by Wild Pines

Genre: indie pop, indie rock

If you like: The xx, Warpaint

Pharmacy by Revlovers

Genre:
indie rock

If you like: Warpaint, The xx, Future Islands

That’s all for October, but until next month, let us know in the comments which of these albums were your favorites, what we missed, and what we should look forward to. If you missed out on the last post, check it out here (and the complete Bandcamping archives are here).
