Mutant’s OVER THE GARDEN WALL ‘For Sara’ Cassette and Read & Listen Book Releases Invite You to Kick Off Halloween Season
October is here. And you know what that means. Yes, it’s Halloween season once again. (Not that Halloween season ever stopped.) But now that it’s official-official, it’s time to dig out your hats, cloaks, and cardigans, get cozy, and put on your favorite spooky show. We bet for many of you that’s the gorgeous series, Over the Garden Wall. But if watching this cult classic is not enough for you, Mutant wants to bring you two fabulous new ways to enjoy your favorite fall treat. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Over the Garden Wall (and, of course, the start of the best time of year), Mutant is releasing a Read & Listen Book 7-inch and “For Sara” Cassette pre-order that die-hard fans must add to their autumnal rituals. Let’s take a look at all the Over the Garden Wall fun on offer.
Mutant’s Over The Garden Wall “For Sara” Cassette
Over the Garden Wall has many iconic symbols associated with it, but is there anything more lovely than the “For Sara” cassette? Fans are always itching to own this gorgeous bit of cinematic history, which contains Wirt’s clarinet music and poetry. And now, it’s making a comeback on Mutant. This “For Sara” cassette has been out of print for a long time, but we imagine it’s incredibly sought after. And so, those eager to complete their Over the Garden Wall collection ought to make sure they’re ready to snag this piece when it releases.
The official description for Mutant’s “For Sara” cassette reveals:
Produced in 2015 as a companion to the original series by Patrick McHale and series composers The Blasting Company, the “For Sara” cassette features 20 minutes of Poetry and Clarinet. POETRY AND CLARINET! But that’s not all. Recorded on overdubbed analog cassettes with original cast members Elijah Wood (Wirt) and Collin Dean (Greg) reprising their roles, littered with easter eggs, emotional performances and thematic resolutions.
What could get you more into the spooky season mood than this? Not to mention, this is the first time the “For Sarah” cassette has been available in years. What a true gift to fans in time for the series’ 10th anniversary.
Mutant’s “For Sara” cassette (from Over The Garden Wall) 10th Anniversary Reissue will cost $15.
Mutant’s Over The Garden Wall Read & Listen Book + 7-inch
In 2014, a spectacularly cool piece of Over the Garden Wall had a very limited release. It was a special promo item that was only available to the cast, crew, and press. What was it exactly, you ask? Well, it was a Read & Listen Book and 7-inch. Basically, a very cool 70’s style Over the Garden Wall tie-in storybook tells a truncated tale of Wirt and Greg and Beatrice’s journey through the Unknown. And it comes with a playable 7-inch vinyl record that fans can use to listen along. Not only is it brand new content for Over the Garden Wall fans to enjoy, but it is also so nostalgic and cool. This item used to be a limited-edition collectible, but now you can own its faithful reproduction. We’re talking every detail in place down to the screen-printed kraft mailer and publicity insert.

This Over the Garden Wall gift features artwork by Jim Campbell, narration by Jack Jones, and music performed by series composers The Blasting Company.
Mutant’s Over The Garden Wall Read & Listen Book + 7-inch will cost $20. It is a limited edition reproduction.
When and Where Can You Order Mutant’s Over the Garden Wall ‘For Sara’ Cassette and Read & Listen Book ReleasesMutant’s Over the Garden Wall ‘For Sara’ Cassette and Read & Listen Book will be available for pre-order on October 4th at Noon CT / 1:00pm ET. You can purchase them on MadebyMutant.com.

Where Are the Elves At the End of THE RINGS OF POWER Season 2?
The Rings of Power season 2 finale ends on an outdoor sequence filled with bright sunshine, epic mountainscapes, warm greenery, and gentle waterfalls. As Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) wakes to find herself in an unexpectedly peaceful environment, she asks, “What is this place?” to which Elrond (Robert Aramayo) says, “A sanctuary,” adding after a pause, “Protected by the Elven Rings.”
The scene goes on to address the dire straights that the Free People of Middle-earth find themselves in, but hold the phone. What is this place they’re suddenly resting in? Weren’t the Orc armies of the ascending Sauron just about to wipe them out? The answers lie in Tolkien’s lore, and while the finale doesn’t directly state it, one thing seems certain. We’re looking at the genesis of one of the most famous places in all Middle-earth: Rivendell.

For all intents and purposes, the final scene in season 2 is just another glade. Perfect for Elves? Sure. But still, nothing too special, right? What makes this, of all places, the top candidate for the famous Elven fortress?
Did We See Rivendell in The Rings of Power‘s Final Episode? For one thing, The Silmarillion translates Rivendell (or its Elvish equivalent, “Imladris”) as “Deep Dale of the Cleft,” which matches the area we see at the end of the finale. For other reasons that we’ll see in a minute, the timing of this reveal points intensely toward the area being the location of the future Rivendell, too. To clear things up, Nerdist went straight to the source and asked Robert Aramayo his thoughts. Here’s how the (semi-helpful) conversation went:
Nerdist : It also looks like we’ve found nascent Rivendell at the end of episode eight of Rings of Power, season two.
Aramayo : Maybe…
Nerdist : Hrm, seems like Rivendell. And if it is Rivendell, how meaningful is it for Elrond and for you to arrive in that place?

Aramayo : Well, we never actually said that when we were shooting it, and there’s a lot of ambiguities as to where we are, and obviously, I asked those questions. But yeah, I think the thing is about Rivendell, and this is actually what I love about it, is we know how it begins. It begins as a strategic position. It doesn’t begin as something that means anything to anyone other than it’s a really good place to defend, and then it grows from there.
And that’s why I love so much about the development of that city. And what makes it so unique, actually, is that Elrond is able to slowly pour who he is, what he’s interested in, what he wants to preserve and project into the world, into this place that builds and builds and grows and then becomes a city. But it’s built from necessity. And if it were to be in the show, which I really hope it is, that’s where I’d love to begin. So, his relationship to it, if he was there, would be just, this is a cool place to stem the coming darkness.
The cryptic references to “knowing how it begins” and to Rivendell being a place of defense and safety are direct references to Tolkien’s source material. (Aramayo the confirmed Tolkien fanatic on set.) Let’s peel back the curtain on the source material and take a closer look at just how Rivendell came into being.
How Was Rivendell Founded in The Lord of the Rings Lore, and Who Founded It?The best description of the genesis of Rivendell comes in the book Unfinished Tales. This is where we get the most detailed account of the siege of Eregion. It explains how Sauron’s armies attack the Elvish city (there’s no Adar in the original version), and the Dark Lord kills Celebrimbor and takes all of the Rings of Power except for the Three Elven Rings. In the proces of this pure and unstoppable display of power, Sauron confronts an army led by Elrond (sent by Gil-galad, but not with the High king present).
Elrond loses the battle, and the book says, “Elrond had gathered such few of the Elves of Eregion as had escaped, but he had no force to withstand the onset.” At this point, the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm help distract Sauron’s armies, and the text says, “Elrond was able to extricate himself, but he was forced away northwards, and it was at that time […] that he established a refuge and stronghold at Imladris (Rivendell).”
So there you have it, folks. The founding of Rivendell comes directly in the wake of Elrond’s defeat outside the walls of Eregion — which is precisely where we are in the Rings of Power story. Between the setting, the emphasis on Elrond, and the timing in the story, it’s hard to argue with the fact that we are, indeed, looking at the origin story for the Elf’s future home.

Rivendell’s founding is a cool story, and it’s barely the opening salvo of a story that will last for millennia. In the wake of its founding, Elrond uses Rivendell as a gathering point for those resisting Sauron. Eventually, the Elves and Men form the Last Alliance, and The Silmarillion says, “They marched east into Middle-earth gathering a great host of Elves and Men; and they halted for a while at Imladris.” When Tolkien says “a while,” he means it, too. A timeline in the appendices of “The Lord of the Rings” shows that they camp out there for three years before marching on Mordor.
After Sauron’s defeat at the end of the Second Age, Rivendell becomes a critical spot for the preservation of lore — and we don’t just mean a glorified library. Rivendell is the one place on Middle-earth where the history of Isildur’s regal family line (and the broken pieces of his father’s sword) are remembered and maintained until a certain young fella named Aragorn shows up to fulfill his destiny.
Elrond lives in Rivendell for all of the Third Age. He gathers Elves and other good folks, dispenses exceptional advice, and preserves important knowledge and heirlooms. The Silmarillion summarizes this by saying, “The house of Elrond was a refuge for the weary and the oppressed, and a treasure of good counsel and wise lore.” In the end, after the One Ring is destroyed, Rivendell remains one of the last Elven havens before the last leaders of the immortal folk dwell until, one by one, they sail away to the Undying Lands in the West.

One key element of Rivendell’s history is that it is the home of one of the Three Elven Rings. The Silmarillion explains that Sauron’s first defeat, the Three Rings are always at work. “[W]here they abode there mirth also dwelt and all things were unstained by the griefs of time.” The book adds, “The Elves perceived that the Ring of Sapphire was with Elrond, in the fair valley of Rivendell, upon whose house the stars of heaven most brightly shone.”
Galadriel keeps her Ring, Nenya, in Lothlórien. We see how the Three Rings play critical roles in protecting and preserving these areas when, in The Fellowship of the Ring book, right before Galadriel reveals her Ring to Frodo, she says:
“Do not think that only by singing amid the trees, nor even by the slender arrows of elven-bows, is this land of Lothlórien maintained and defended against its Enemy.”
Tolkien makes it clear that both Rivendell and Lothlórien are preserved largely by the Rings of Power wielded by their leaders. The brief exchange between Elrond and Galadriel in the Rings of Power finale indicates that showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay are angling in that same direction in their adaptation.

So, what will the role of Rivendell be in The Rings of Power then? Assuming we’ve already seen it, it makes sense that heading into Season 3, the future fastness of Elrond will play a major role in catalyzing the Elven resistance to the resurgent Sauron. Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker) was already talking in sword or shield terminology as the credits rolled for season 2. Will they attack and bring the fight to Sauron, or fall back and play defense?
The source material actually does both. (First, they defend, and then they attack with the Last Alliance.) However, with the show’s condensed timeline, they might skip the first part of that process. Either way, there is little doubt that Rivendell will be at the center of the action for a long while to come — and Elrond Peredhel’s fascinating story arc will doubtless continue to unfold alongside it.

Is Aubrey Plaza in AGATHA ALL ALONG an Amalgam of these Marvel Comics Characters?
In a series full of scene-stealers, Aubrey Plaza’s witchy Rio Vidal character in Agatha All Along is up near the top. Yet we still don’t really know much about her. All we know is that she’s exceptionally powerful, and has a tangled past with Agatha Harkness which has led to a Kill Bill-style knock-down battle between the two in the first episode. Her name, or alias more likely, roughly translates to “River of Life.” There’s been a good amount of evidence that lets us know that Rio and Agatha clearly had a past romantic relationship, the details of which are a mystery.

There’s also plenty of evidence to suggest that Rio Vidal is more than just a regular witch. When she shouts “I’m not a green witch, I’m THE Green Witch” in a demonic voice in episode four? That itself already tells us she’s more than meets the eye. But what if she’s actually Marvel Comics’ version of Death itself? Or the being known as Blackheart? Or perhaps, an amalgamation of the two? Here are the clues leading us to believe Rio is far more than she appears to be. And how what she may truly be has deep ties to Marvel Comics lore.
Who Is Mistress Death in the Marvel Comics?
In the comics, Death, sometimes called Mistress Death or Lady Death, is a cosmic entity, older than creation itself. Created by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich, she first appeared in 1973’s Captain Marvel #26. As the name suggests, she’s the physical embodiment of death itself. Death is similar to other Marvel eternal entities like Eternity or the Living Tribunal. Both beings appeared fleetingly in recent MCU projects. Eternity popped up in Thor: Love and Thunder. And there was a “blink and ya miss it” cameo of the Living Tribunal in Multiverse of Madness. So it would be fitting for Death to also appear in the MCU in some form.
Thanos and Deadpool Both Love Death
In the comics, Death usually appears in a skeletal form in a black hood. But she also occasionally looks like a Caucasian woman with black hair. The Mad Titan Thanos was obsessively in love with her. In The Infinity Gauntlet, his infamous snap erasing half of all life in the universe was done to impress her. But Death was never that impressed, and always rebuffed his advances. Simply put, she was above him.

Years later, she admitted to “some” love for him. Eventually, the two combined energies to create a child, called the Rot. Death was left out of Infinity War and Endgame, and Thanos had new motivations for the snap in the MCU. We hope if Rio is indeed Death, she jokingly refers to Thanos’ obsession with her at some point. Ironically, in later years, a flirtation blossomed between Death and Deadpool of all people. As someone who can’t die, Deadpool might fall under the category of “wanting what you can never have.”
The Clues Spelling Out That Rio Vidal Is Death
There have been visual cues aplenty that Rio is really Death from the start of Agatha All Along. She appears in a black hood when she attacks Agatha’s house in the first episode. She wears a similar hood on the Witches’ Road in episode four, although this one has a bit more ‘70s glam to it. Her distinct curved dagger is also held by the image of Death in Lilia Calderu’s Tarot deck. That can’t be a coincidence. All signs point to Rio Vidal somehow being Death itself.
Rio clearly loved Agatha at some point, and we feel their relationship will be explored in future episodes. Rio describes her “scar” as the pain she feels when she had to hurt someone she loved by just doing her job. Our guess is that as Death, it was Rio’s “job” to take the soul of Agatha’s son, Nicholas Scratch. Perhaps this was in exchange for the Darkhold? Whatever happened, Rio “just doing her job” put a black mark on their relationship. When privately talking with Agatha in the recording studio of Lorna Wu’s house, she implies heavily she’s there to take the souls of the other witches. Also, when Teen is near death, Agatha looks to Rio and says “Don’t.” The implication here is that Agatha (possibly believing Teen is somehow her son Nicholas) doesn’t want Death to come for him.
Rio Vidal May Also Be Blackheart
Of course, Rio might be more than just Death from the comics. The MCU loves making amalgamations of characters. When Lilia gave Agatha her list of names for forming her coven, the fifth name that seemingly freaked out Agatha was an image of a black heart. In the comics, Blackheart is the “son” of Mephisto, created from the accumulated dark energy Mephisto gathered from a location known for its many murders. Blackheart became a primary adversary of the hero Ghost Rider. He originally resided in a Hell dimension, although Mephisto banished him to the Earthly plane.
When Rio appears, she crawls from the ground where Sharon Davis (“Mrs. Hart”) was buried after her untimely demise. She hints that she may have come from a realm beneath. Well, that realm could be Hell itself. Maybe Death needs some sort of corporeal form in the realm of the living. In the comics, she’s taken a human host before, when dealing with the Scarlet Spider. Her corporeal form may be that of Blackheart, a child of Mephisto. After all, we did get a Mephisto name drop at last in this series. There is probably a reason for that, beyond just establishing the character in the MCU. Death, Blackheart, a combo of the two, we imagine whoever this Rio Vidal/Green Witch truly is will reveal herself in the next few weeks.

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS’ Final Season Gets a Bloody Good Trailer
All good things must come to an end. Even things that technically should live forever, like vampires. The final season of FX and Hulu’s What We Do in the Shadows is coming soon, and now we’ve got our newest trailer for season six. All our favorite undead roommates from Staten Island are back for this last hurrah, including Nandor the Relentless, Laszlo Cranvensworth, Nadja of Antipaxos, Colin Robinson, the Guide, and Guillermo de la Cruz. You can check out the full trailer for What We Do in the Shadows’ final season right here:
So what can we glean from this trailer? Well, it looks like we’re meeting the newest undead roommate. Or actually, it’s an old roommate the vampires once lived with named Jerry. Poor Jerry went into an extended slumber 50 years ago, and his roomies just sort of forgot to wake him up. We also see that Nadja is going to enter the corporate world. As for Laszlo, it appears he’s going to continue his scientific experiments, this time trying to make a cobbled-together corpse come back to life like Frankenstein, a world-famous story he swears he has no idea exists.

Six seasons qualifies as a good run these days for any cable or streaming show. It seems three seasons is the most we get on even popular streaming series these days. So perhaps fans should be happy we got as much as we did. Still, we can’t help but be sad we won’t be seeing our favorite bumbling vampires again. Maybe the term “Six seasons and a movie” should apply here? Hopefully, that won’t be negated by the fact there actually was a What We Do in the Shadows movie first. It was a different cast, we say don’t count it.
Episode one of the final season of What We Do in the Shadows, starring Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Kayvan Novak, Mark Proksch, Kristen Schaal, and Harvey Guillén, drops on FX and Hulu on October 21.
