A Guide to THE WALKING DEAD’s Spinoff Series
The Walking Dead is over but, as we know, the end of the flagship series that’s been in fans’ hearts for over a decade doesn’t mean this world is done. The show already has six spinoff series: Fear the Walking Dead, Tales of the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, The Walking Dead: Dead City, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Most of them are completed; however, there’s a couple that are continuing this franchise with more seasons.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season Three Is Coming in 2025Season two of Daryl Dixon’s series wrapped up his time in France and reunited him with Carol. Laurent has a sweet plane ride to the Commonwealth; however, there wasn’t enough space for Carol and Daryl to ride with Ash. So they are off to England and Spain in a quest to find their way back to the US, which we see in this teaser trailer.
We know the next round is coming in sometime in 2025 and we can assume it will be either late Summer or Spring so it doesn’t overlap with Dead City. There’s already some news about season three of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, including the latest news that The Office creator and comedian Stephen Merchant will join the cast.
It seems the series might even get a fourth round, according to Norman Reedus during a RadioTimes interview. “We’re about to start seasons 3 and possibly 4 in Spain,” he said. “I think I’m allowed to say that. I don’t know. I just said it. But I think we’re going to Spain, to Madrid, for that.”
The Walking Dead: Dead City Season Two Will Arrive in May 2025While this universe is trucking along with Daryl’s adventures, things are slower for Dead City. We’ve known that a second season was coming for a while but didn’t know the release date until now. We will get season two on May 4. Season 1 ended with Maggie trading Negan to get her son Herschel back. Now, Negan is working for The Dama, a dangerous leader in NYC. This next chapter will presumably focus on her organization and Negan’s attempts to escape… if he even wants to do that. Negan no longer has his family and really has no friends either, so he might as well crank up the evil again, right? Well that’s exactly what seems to be the case in the above Dead City season two trailer.
These first-look season two photos bring us right back into the grittiness of this series:

Here’s a synopsis for Dead City‘s second season:
In season two, in the growing war for control of Manhattan, Maggie and Negan find themselves trapped on opposite sides. As their paths intertwine, they come to see that the way out for both is more complicated and harrowing than they ever imagined.
In The Walking Dead: Dead City season two’s latest clip, Negan speaks and says that “power is power” as Maggie ends up returning to NYC at some point. We know that he’s working in Dama and he seems to be having a good time banging his new Lucille against a table. Oh dear…
And, you gotta love these additional photos from season two:

Anywho, season two will bring new faces into the mix. Deadline reports that Sons of Anarchy alum Kim Coates will join Dead City‘s cast as Bruegel, the leader of a fierce NYC gang. There are also a few other new cast members joining The Walking Dead: Dead City in season two. I particularly love Dascha Polanco.

As fans know, Rick Grimes was supposed to get three movies, but now it is the limited series alongside Michonne. The Ones Who Live is meant to wrap up their storylines; however, Gimple says there might be more story to tell. “Anything is possible…,” he said to Deadline. “We’re focused on this one right now. But this one came together in a really amazing way, where there were all sorts of plans. And then the world changed and we altered those plans.”

We obviously know now (and honestly always knew) that Rick did not die in his spinoff. He got to reunite with Judith and meet Rick, Jr., but there are so many reunions that need to happen. Morgan is out there looking for Rick, Daryl will eventually return to the US, and there’s the rest of his found family back home along with Laurent in the Commonwealth. All signs seem to be pointing to a crossover event, which Gimple wants to happen.
“I do have dreams of merging this all together, and I have laid little breadcrumbs toward that, but you never know exactly when and how [it will come together], because of a variety of reasons,” he told TVLine. As long as The Walking Dead franchise is getting money and attention from fans, it will surely keep making more spinoff content. That’s fine with us but please, please don’t follow the comics and kill Rick Grimes if you bring him back in the future.
With Norman Reedus wanting to play Daryl Dixon for several more years, it wouldn’t be shocking if he crossed into some future spinoff series. I wouldn’t mind a Daryl and Connie miniseries. Perhaps he will somehow come across Maggie and/or Negan in their show. Or, maybe he will be the gateway to introduce us to a new character to follow. A crossover event would likely put him front and center as one of this universe’s leading men.
A lot is happening in The Walking Dead universe and there will surely be more details about other spinoffs if they happen. There’s plenty left to explore in the land of the dead, so let’s keep walking right towards these spinoffs.

Why Marvel’s NOVA Should Be a Movie, Not a Disney+ Series
Recently, reports surfaced that Marvel Studios is seriously rethinking its Disney+ strategy. Marvel “paused” the in-development Nova series, which sounds like a nicer word for “canceled.” (At least, canceled for now.) Marvel also shelved the proposed Strange Academy and Terror, Inc. series. Meanwhile, the focus will be less on series with movie budgets, like Loki or Moon Knight, and more on shows like Daredevil. Disney+ wants its series designed to run multiple seasons and feel more like television, not a feature film broken up into six episodes. This is a solid course correction. However, Marvel should reconfigure Nova in particular to what it should have always been—a big-budget, sci-fi spectacle film.

For those of you out there unfamiliar with the concept of Nova, he’s a cosmic Marvel hero who debuted in the ’70s. Nova was created by New Teen Titans and Blade creator Marv Wolfman, together with legendary artist John Buscema. In his original incarnation, he was middle-class New York City teenager Richard Rider, who was given the responsibility and power of being the last member of the Interstellar Nova Corps. Armed with a StarCorps suit, he could fly in space, project energy blasts, and even display limited super strength. The Corps originated from the planet Xandar. (MCU fans should be familiar with the Nova Corps and Xandar from Guardians of the Galaxy.) Yes, it’s all a bit “Spider-Man meets Green Lantern” and his helmet was kind of goofy. But somehow, it all worked.

Richard Rider debuted in The Man Called Nova #1 in 1976, and his series ran for 25 issues. After his ongoing series ended, the so-called “Human Rocket” disappeared into obscurity for a decade. He then became a lead character in Marvel’s team book New Warriors in 1989. This new prominence led to several series over the next few years. Eventually, Nova played a big role in the popular Annihilation event in the 2000s. A new teenage Nova was introduced in 2007 named Sam Alexander. While never gaining popularity on the level of other Marvel heroes, Nova as a concept is still ripe with potential, especially for a live-action film.

Allegedly, the now-canceled Disney+ series would have dealt directly with the decimation of Xandar from Thanos. They mentioned this event in Infinity War, but never showed it on screen. In the wake of that destruction, the Nova Corps would have to rebuild. Earthling Richard Rider would be recruited to help restore a new, youthful Nova squadron. The rumored vibe was “Top Gun in space,” and John C. Reilly and Glenn Close would likely have returned to their roles as Nova Corps elite. John C. Reilly’s Nova Centurion Rhomann Dey was the character in the comics who passed on the Nova title to Richard Rider. Together the Nova Corps would have to face the threat of Annihilus and his Annihilation Wave from the Negative Zone. Annihilus is one of the last, great Marvel Comics villains still awaiting a live-action debut.

All of this sounds, to use an overused term, extremely epic. But it’s maybe just too epic to be a streaming series. Could a streaming series really do this concept justice? This deserves to be a feature film, with a proper budget that allows them to go full sci-fi fantasy with it. Now that the cosmic side of the MCU is dormant, with the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, something needs to fill that slot like Nova. You add the right star as Richard Rider and a director with a distinct style, and it won’t matter if the general audience has never heard of the character.
Honestly, we can see the thinking Marvel Studios had in developing this franchise for Disney+ over theatrical. It’s not as well-known an IP as Iron Man or Thor. But neither was Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014. And look how that turned out. Sure, it might go the way of Eternals and not connect with audiences on a wide scale. But if Marvel never takes chances, they’ll just be releasing sequels to Infinity Saga heroes forever. Putting it on Disney+ was the safer bet, but maybe the time for playing it safe is over. Nova deserves his shot at the spotlight, but he deserves the scope that goes with a feature film. Marvel Studios just needs to pull the trigger on it.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy Is Reportedly Stepping Down in 2025—Who Will Be Next STAR WARS Head?
For over a decade, Lucasfilm leader Kathleen Kennedy has been the captain of Star Wars’ entertainment ship in a galaxy far, far away. From films like the very divisive Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker film to beloved series like The Mandalorian and Andor, it has been quite the complex adventure for fans and surely for Kennedy as well. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Kathleen Kennedy is reportedly retiring and leaving Lucasfilm at the end of 2025.
It is not clear exactly when, or even if, this is happening this year. It is also not clear who her replacement will be whenever she does decide to step into retirement. Kennedy joined Lucasfilm back in 2012 alongside George Lucas as a co-chair for the organization. Soon after, Lucas left and Disney bought the company for $4 billion, which left Kennedy as its head. It’s hard to imagine the level of scrutiny and tough decision making that one must go through each day as the leader of a major entertainment company. But, after years of choices—some praised and others derided—it seems that Kathleen Kennedy is ready to hand the reins of Star Wars to someone else and leave Lucasfilm.

So far, there’s no word from her representatives nor from Lucasfilm to fully confirm this news. Of course, if it is true, the question on everyone’s minds becomes, who will replace Kathleen Kennedy as head of Star Wars? The Hollywood Reporter recently rounded up a list of top contenders. Of course, most of these choices are backed by nameless sources and their beliefs about the future of Star Wars, so there is a grain of salt involved. But according to THR and some of these insiders, some top choices include Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and incredibly, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, or perhaps some combination of the above. Favreau and Filoni have both had a big hand in recent Star Wars releases, and, of course, Feige needs no introduction. Additional names shared are J.J. Abrams, who has had mixed Star Wars success in the past; Emma Watts, who was president of production at 20th Century Fox and led X-Men, among other things; and Hannah Minghella, a former Abrams/Bad Robot employee with an impressive resume.
With Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo coming up in April, we should be getting more news about the franchise’s future, including who may be its new leader.

The Scariest Ghostface Phone Calls in the SCREAM Film Franchise
After decades of accolades and analyses, it is beyond safe to say that Scream (1996) is a horror movie classic. The teen slasher film took many elements of the genre, like meta commentary and common tropes, and gave them a fresh take through the heartbreaking story of Sidney Prescott. From Scream‘s lengthy opening scene featuring the ill-fated Casey Becker and her run in with the killer who would become known as Ghostface, it was clear that this film wasn’t just some run-of-the-mill, cheap bloodbath. It was a series of phone calls, moments, and one-liners that no one will ever forget.
RELATED ARTICLE
A Glorious Guide to the SCREAM UniverseSince then, a tenet of the Scream franchise is characters having a verbal run-in with Ghostface via telephone. There’s a good reason why the phrase “Hello Sidney!” is so popular. While there’s usually a humorous undertone in many of the phone calls, at their core they are downright scary and unsettling.
There are dozens of Ghostface phone calls in Scream, but these are the scariest ones in the franchise.
Note: Instead of referring to Ghostface as he or she depending on whom I think (or know) is under the mask, I will keep it simple. Ghostface is indeed his own character and entity within this universe, so I will refer to the character as “he.”
If You Hang Up on Me, You’ll Die Just Like Your Mother! (Scream 1996)The first encounter that Sidney has with Ghostface starts with a phone call. From the moment that unassuming voice speaks, our forearm hairs are standing at attention. Unlike Sidney, who thinks it sounds kinda sexy, we know it is the precursor to splatter violence, thanks to Casey Becker. The conversation goes from lighthearted questioning to poking fun at horror tropes and back again as Sidney wonders if her horror loving pal Randy is playing a prank.
The hard switch from an unsettling yet seemingly joking vibe to Ghostface snarling that “If you hang up on me, you’ll die just like your mother!” takes Sid through a gamut of emotions. And, upon reflection, it sets up her phone relationship with Ghostface throughout the franchise: a mix of taunts, threats, snarky remarks, and painful emotional and verbal jabs. It is the moment that begins Sid’s unfortunate connection to Ghostface.
Do You Think It’s Over, Sidney?! (Scream 3)Scream 3 is one of the weirdest ends to a planned trilogy (which we now know was not the end) ever. On one hand, there’s a Scooby Doo-esque adventure with Gale, Dewey, and the Stab 3 cast. On the other hand, it is a harrowing time for Sidney, who is questioning her sanity, deeply traumatized, and enduring the pain of fully understanding her mother’s tragic life.

Unpacking Maureen Prescott’s Devastating Story in SCREAM 3This is a part of why Ghostface’s call to her secluded ranch is so darn scary. He’s aware of the mental trauma she’s endured since Scream 2, as evidenced by her “living like the Unabomber” away from family and friends. Ghostface plays on her emotions perfectly, masquerading as a victim of violence calling into Sid’s job for assistance. Then, the mood does a hard shift as the caller’s voice changes to her own mother’s, which makes her question what’s really happening in the moment.
Sidney’s realization that the call is coming to her home line and a well-timed news report of more deaths drives her out of hiding and into Roman’s twisted Hollywood world. While the voice changer is frankly a ridiculous concept in a film released in 2000, it is worth suspending disbelief for in this scene.
Randy Will Never Get the Girl (Scream 2)It took us a whopping six movies for Ghostface to finally have a telephone chat with Gale. But that wasn’t the original plan for Ghostface. This cold killer called Gale’s cell phone in Scream 2, which Randy answers and unintentionally seals his fate. From the beginning, Ghostface puts Randy, Gale, and Dewey on edge.
While Randy does insert some great horror fan humor into the mix, like calling Showgirls a scary movie, Ghostface wants to cut through some flesh and scrape the bones beneath it. The mounting paranoia and, weirdly enough, the broad daylight with Ghostface’s voice is a chilling combination. And telling Randy that he will never be the hero nor win Sid’s heart is a verbal stab to the heart before the actual one occurs.
Answer the Questions, Kirby! (Scream 4)Honestly, every Ghostface call in Scream 4 (the proper film, not all those fake out Stab openings) is pretty solid. But this one is one of the scariest and most intense in the franchise. Kirby is already in a high-anxiety space after seeing Ghostface (hello Jill) accost Charlie and tie him up Steve Orth-style. Ghostface invites Kirby, a big horror fan, to live a Stab movie scene instead of watching it. Ghostface begins a rapid fire questioning about villain weapons and even a multiple choice question, causing Kirby to (mostly) answer correctly in a panic. Her rattling off a list of horror films for the final question and Ghostface’s silence leading up to Charlie’s reveal as a killer is a wild twist in the third act.
This Isn’t a F**cking Movie! (Scream 4)
Let’s stay on Scream 4 for another moment. Sidney is a totally different person than she was in the previous film and it shows in this phone call. Any fear she had of a Ghostface killer is long gone after she finally found some catharsis through writing her life story. Sidney’s mindset shift from viewing herself as a victim to someone who controls her narrative, even in the face of violence, is evident from the moment she answers the phone simply saying “What?”
This call’s scariness is Ghostface’s very personal and venomous rage about Sidney leaving Woodsboro behind. (This had to be Jill on the phone.) Also, “I’m gonna slit your eyelids in half so you don’t blink when I stab you in the face!” is an inspired line, indeed.
In fact, the language in this Ghostface call is so wild that most YouTube videos are flagged.
Maybe You’re Too Weak for This Franchise… (Scream 2022)When it comes to the “requel” Scream films, this phone call absolutely gets first place. Ghostface is stalking behind a seriously injured Tara at the always-abandoned Woodsboro hospital. (Seriously, where the hell is everyone?!) Surprisingly, it is Sam who accidentally gives Ghostface a ring on Richie’s phone. (Well, he is also Ghostface but not at the moment.)
The way Ghostface fires up the voice changer and gives Sam the choice to either choose her sister or Richie? The reverse Uno that Sam pulls when she reveals that she was faking panic to stall for time? Good stuff. Ghostface is sneering and menacing and I love to hear it.
Do You Wanna Die Tonight, Cici? (Scream 2)Scream 2 didn’t open with a scary phone call. Instead, it saved Ghostface’s audio taunting for Buffy Gilmore… erm, I mean Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Cici Cooper. She’s a sorority girl on sober sister duties who doesn’t believe that life imitates art… until the Stab movie literally comes ringing in her ear. She certainly wishes it was her drunk on-and-off-again boyfriend/hookup buddy Ted, but it is not. Cici and Ghostface’s round of quick questions along with his taunting lines like the following:
“Do you wanna die tonight, Cici?”
“You wish it was Ted.”
“Don’t forget to set the alarm.”
All of it keeps the tension going right up until he pops out of the closet. Ghostface was all about zero games and all kills with this call, which is why it is on this scariest ones of all list.
Maybe It’s Time Someone Made a Buck Reporting Your Death! (Scream VI)Gale and Ghostface have done many things together, from chasing each other around in a sound studio to falling down a flight of basement steps. But, it took six movies for Gale to finally get a phone call from Ghostface. From his audacity to announce himself as the killer to her boyfriend to her genius of calling him back to shoot him, it is certainly one of the best scenes in Scream VI. Ghostface knows exactly what to say to ruffle Gale’s feathers, like digging into her guilt over Dewey and pointing out her opportunistic ways. This Ghostface is angry with her specifically and it is a delight to hear their verbal sparring.
Casey Becker’s Opening Scene Fiasco (Scream 1996)The OG. The Legend. The last on this list but THEE scariest Ghostface phone call of all-time! Casey Becker’s winding phone call is truly a masterclass in both acting and writing that laid the foundation for the entire franchise. The seemingly innocent flirting, the infamous “I wanna know who I’m looking at” line, threats to gut her like a fish… every moment that Casey and Ghostface are on the phone is perfection.
Decades and many views later, it will still fill fans to the brim with a sense of dread as Casey goes into a deep hole of fear. In fact, we think it is one of the best horror opening scenes of all-time… and perhaps in any genre, period. Roger L. Jackson may not be famous to those outside of the fandom. But, to Scream lovers, he is the voice acting GOAT who truly made Ghostface into his separate entity from those who dare to don the mask.

FEAR STREET: PROM QUEEN Sets a May Release Date in New Teaser
Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy brought R.L. Stine’s frankly underrated horror books to life with a story that spanned decades. We went to Shadyside, a cursed town with a long history of murder and mayhem until Deena Johnson finally freed them from this horrible cycle in 1994. Like Goosebumps, the Fear Street books were an anthology series that told many spooky stories, so fans were hopeful that the trilogy’s success would lead to more adventures. And we know more about when that’s going to happen. Fear Street will return to Netflix with a fourth installment titled Fear Street: Prom Queen on May 23, and there’s a short teaser to accompany that release date:
We don’t have a full trailer quite yet, but we do have some sinister first-look photos from Fear Street: Prom Queen. Check out the images below:

First, this film is going to take us to Shadyside High School once again for a brand-new and dark story. Here’s a quick synopsis for the upcoming Fear Street film from Netflix:
Welcome back to Shadyside. In this next installment of the blood-soaked Fear Street franchise, prom season at Shadyside High is underway and the school’s wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown. But when a gutsy outsider is unexpectedly nominated to the court, and the other girls start mysteriously disappearing, the class of ’88 is suddenly in for one hell of a prom night.
Return to Shadyside High for one unforgettable night.

Fear Street: Prom Queen comes Netflix in 2025 🔪🩸 pic.twitter.com/W1heyY5SSc
As evidenced by its title, this film will draw specifically from the 1992 book The Prom Queen. That story lines up pretty closely with the above synopsis, so we will see how it plays out in live-action. A new cast will take the lead of course, but there’s a small chance that we will see familiar characters make cameos, too. Christine Berman and Nick Goode were around and likely in their 20s at the time and that would tie the story somewhat into the events we saw in 1978 and 1994.

THE WALKING DEAD: DEAD CITY Season Two Reveals Opening Clip and May Release Date
Spring is right around the corner, so that means it is time for The Walking Dead universe to give us something fresh to devour. Somehow, in the midst of all the ongoing spinoff action over the past two years, we are still waiting for The Walking Dead: Dead City to take us back to the Big Apple and continue the storylines of Maggie and Negan. But we don’t have to wait any longer. The Walking Dead: Dead City is back in the New York groove with a clip showing its opening two minutes and a May release date.
There’s not too much to really glean from the clip. And you know what? I like it that way. Don’t give me a bunch of insight into the new season please. We see a couple of “walker cleanup” folks on the streets of NYC. They take walkers to a facility where they are basically melted down into goo. The gases from their deceased bodies (ick) make fuel to keep things going. This fact was addressed in season one and now we will see more of it in action. We do not see Maggie nor Negan in this clip, but we are sure they will come to the forefront in a future trailer. For now, we can groove to this Dead City opening clip and its clever use of the glam rock band Hello’s “New York Groove.”

In addition to a teaser, The Walking Dead: Dead City set a release date of May 4. This means that we will get this season before Daryl Dixon’s third season hits, likely in Fall 2025. So far, there’s no word of other spinoffs at the moment. But perhaps what we get from Dead City and Daryl Dixon’s next chapters will put a plan in place for a crossover event that brings all the OG main players back together somehow. (It may not happen, tbh. I kinda think Daryl likes getting into mess overseas.)

REVENGE OF THE SITH Returns to Theaters this Spring, Celebrating Its 20th Anniversary
Believe it or not, it’s been twenty years since the theatrical release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. To celebrate two decades of Obi-Wan Kenobi having the high ground, Lucasfilm is re-releasing Revenge of the Sith to theaters this spring. So for those of you who have only ever experienced Order 66 on DVD or Disney+? Well, you’re in for a whole new galaxy. Revenge of the Sith will run in U.S. theaters and select international territories for one week only, starting April 25. It will be available in several formats, including, for the first time, 4DX. You can check out the new theatrical poster by acclaimed artist Matt Ferguson below:

Matt Ferguson’s poster leans into a very Sith-like red-and-black aesthetic. It highlights Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) as he succumbs to the dark side. Looming behind him is his ultimate destiny as the iconically evil Lord Darth Vader. Below Anakin, you can see his fateful duel with his former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) on the planet Mustafar. Other cool details include Republic Star Destroyers in battle with Separatist flagships, as the Clone Wars come to an end.
At the time of its release, we all genuinely believed Revenge of the Sith would mark the end of the Star Wars saga. At least as far as movies were concerned. After all, that’s what George Lucas told us it was going to be at the time. (Oh, we were such sweet innocent summer children back in 2005.) Of course, that turned out to very much not be the case. Nevertheless, Revenge of the Sith retains a special place in the hearts of many Star Wars fans. And now, you’ll be able to experience it again (or for the first time) the way George Lucas intended it, on the biggest theater screen imaginable. With rattling chairs or whatever.

The Irwin Allen Universe Will Return to Our Screens From Legendary Television and Akiva Goldsman
The bottom of the ocean, the furthest reaches of space, worlds of giants, aliens, monsters, and forces beyond our understanding… These are just a few of the wonderous concepts that legendary producer Irwin Allen brought to life in his seminal work in movies and television. Anyone who loves sci-fi will know how critical his works are to the genre and how forward-thinking his popular ’60s series really are. And so, with genre television at an all-time high, it’s the perfect time to reimagine the Irwin Allen Universe for a modern age. Legendary Television and acclaimed writer, producer, and director Akiva Goldsman are collaborating to reimagine Irwin Allen’s classic series: Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of the Giants, and The Time Tunnel.

A release shares that Akiva Goldsman, working with Legendary Television, is “crafting a unified vision for these stories, bringing modern sensibilities to their timeless appeal, and expanding upon his success as one of the driving forces behind the revitalized Star Trek universe.” It’s been an amazing time for Star Trek television, and Goldsman’s work on Star Trek Picard and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has no doubt more than prepared him to take on this brand-new fantastical franchise. Additionally, Jon Jashni serves as executive producer, with Derek Thielges serving as co-producer.
Meanwhile, Legendary Television is no stranger to adapting beloved works for the screen and acting as a steward for properties that mean a great deal to their fans. Between its live-action Monsterverse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (Apple TV+), anime series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft (Netflix), Dune: Prophecy (HBO/MAX), and the Emmy-winning Drops of God (Apple TV+)—it’s clear Legendary Television knows how to revitalize and evolve familiar worlds into new, but equally beloved forms.
Irwin Allen’s original works, though heavily influenced by the world in which he lived, remain rich with themes that are still incredibly relevant and resonant today. And, of course, the futuristic and incredible universe that Allen created is no less magnificent now than it was decades ago. We’re excited to see the reimagined world of Irwin Allen come to our screens sometime soon in this “visionary effort to reintroduce these beloved franchises to a new generation.”

Live-Action BARNEY Movie: Ayo Edebiri to Write and Maybe Star in Daniel Kaluuya-Produced Film
After his fantastic starring performance in 2017’s Get Out and his compelling turn as the conflicted W’Kabi in 2018’s Black Panther, we would have said Daniel Kaluuya can pretty much do any project he wants and we’ll want line up to see it. Now, that theory is really going to be put to the test. Well, at least it will be for those of us who don’t have any small children and have been trying to get a certain song unstuck from our head the last 25 years. The Oscar-nominated actor is going to produce a movie about the beloved purple dinosaur Barney. And, even more excitingly, rising star The Bear‘s Ayo Edebiri is set to write the live-action Barney movie and maybe even star in it.

Kaluuya and his new production company 59% is teaming up with Mattel Films and Valparaiso Pictures to produce a live-action film based on the popular kid’s television show character. The latest news about the movie reveals that joining him on the film is Ayo Edebiri. Edebiri is set to write the screenplay and is in talks to star in the Barney movie as well. Sources indicate that Kaluuya has no plans to act in the movie at this time.
PBS Kids
Many know that the big purple dino promoted friendship, kindness, and togetherness via singing and dancing on the long-running Barney and Friends, which ran 14 seasons and 268 episodes from 1992 to 2009.
And while this might seem like an unlikely move for one of Hollywood’s best young actors, Kaluuya explained in a statement announcing the movie why he thinks it’s important to bring back the character for a new generation. “Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood,” he said, “We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time.”
Stand the test of time? Just reading those lyrics already has that song stuck in our heads (where it will live for-freaking-ever). New movie or not we’ll never be able to forget Barney because of it.
It’s not hard to understand why any studio would want to be involved with Kaluuya after his last couple of years, but Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner said in a statement he thinks Kaluuya will be able to help tell a new kind of Barney story that appeals to all ages. “Working with Daniel Kaluuya will enable us to take a completely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations. The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today’s kids.” Ayo Edebiri also brings an incredible amount of talent to the table, and she and Kaluuya are unlikely to create anything less than excellence.
We also bet it helps Mattel is going to be able to sell about a gazillion toys to go along with the movie. Because while Barney can teach us about loving one another he can also teach us about capitalism.
Mattel Films has been busy since it released the overwhelming hit Barbie, starring Margot Robbie. And we know the studio hopes to do it again. Also producing Barney are 59%’s Rowan Riley and Amandla Crichlow, as well as Valparaiso Picture’s David Carrico, Adam Paulsen, and Bobby Hoppey. Mattle’s Kevin McKeon will oversee the project.
So, will those of us without small children hold to our promise to see anything Daniel Kaluuya is involved in? Probably. We love him and we love Barney. Plus, we know that purple dino loves us too.
