How to Bless Your Children
Many of us put a lot of energy and worry into making sure that we leave a blessing behind for our children. We want them to grow up better than we did, to have more and to enjoy a better life.
And, at least on the surface, there’s nothing wrong with that. But the problem occurs when we believe the ends of good provision and blessing justify the means of workaholism and pursing financial gain.
Nowhere in the Bible are we told guarantee our kids’ financial security. We can’t. Financial security is a myth. It’s an oxymoron. Many dads and moms are missing their children’s childhoods, all in the name of good provision. It’s crazy, upside-down thinking.
Enter the Book of Proverbs. In twelve simple English words King Solomon tells us how to ensure that our children inherit blessing:
The godly walk with integrity; blessed are their children who follow them. Proverbs 20:7
Bottom line? Walk with integrity. Parents who live with God’s holiness and righteousness in their daily lives will pass on rich blessing and inheritance to their kids.
What is walking with integrity?
It means keeping your word
It means loving and abiding by God’s teachings
It means modeling a healthy marriage
It means teaching your kids to serve
It means worshiping with your kids
It means honoring God with your finances
It means praying with and for your children
It means always telling the truth
It means putting others before yourself
It means teaching them how to forgive
It means showing them how to respond to enemies
It means teaching them how to handle conflict
It means teaching them to love the Lord with all they are
That list looks a bit different from what many of us deem as important, doesn’t it? You see, we have a different and warped idea of what blessing is.
In the Bible, blessing has nothing to do with wealth, comfort or financial security. Biblical blessing has everything to do with God’s favor and protection. It’s a spiritual blessing, not a material or financial one.
And parents who seek first God’s Kingdom and God’s righteousness are much more likely to pass on blessing to their kids than those who seek first the world’s riches. And no, you can’t pursue both at the same time.
What are you passing on to your children? What are you modeling for them? What values are they learning from you?
Give your kids the spiritual blessing that God wants them to have. Live your life pursuing the Kingdom of God. God will take care of everything else.
