Correct Title Capitalization

I’m kind of a freak about capitalization. Not that I know how to capitalize things properly every time, but I feel that at the very least I aspire to capitalize the right words in a title. Doing so, I find, adds a subtle but worthwhile dollop of goodness to written text. Proper capitalization shows that…

Egg Hunt

This morning Laura and I took our daughter to an Easter egg hunt here in Bloomington, IL, where we’re visiting family. She’s in the center, below, with the basket. When the organizers yelled “Go!” all of the kids started their mad scramble and it occurred to me that this is all just training for Black…

Record Store Day and the Vinyl Comeback

The New York Times provides some background on the annual event for independent record shops: Though a promotional event, Record Day underscores the mini-renaissance of vinyl. As recently as 2008, only 2.9 million LPs were sold in the United States, representing about 0.7 percent of annual album sales, according to the Recording Industry Association of…

Slow Motion Collisions

I have some good news and some bad news. First, the good news. Next Wednesday evening in New York City, I’m hosting a panel discussion called “Slow Motion Collisions: How Digital Design Careers Evolve” for AIGA/NY. I’ll be joined on stage by Justin Van Slembrouck of Digg, Jill Nussbaum of The Barbarian Group, Cemre Güngör…

Are Magazine Apps Dead?

Magazine industry veteran Robert Newman posed this question to several influential people working at the intersection of digital media and print magazines. The results are very insightful. Here’s a sampling: Josh Klenert, Executive Director in the Digital Customer Experience team for JPMorgan Chase: A lot of what was done in wave 1 of app magazines…

On the Trail with Wylie Dufresne

Reprinted from Lucky Peach Magazine over at Medium: comics artist Lisa Hanawalt followed famed New York chef Wylie Dufresne for a day and documented her experience in drawings and notes. It’s an amusing piece and worth a look. Though it originated in print, it strikes me that this flavor of illustrated journalism has a lot…

Vincent Mahé’s Neighbours

French illustrator Vincent Mahé’s work is wonderful. You can see lots of it at his blog. I first discovered him through his project “Neighbours,” in which he captures those fleeting glimpses of his fellow Parisians as seen through Paris’s distinctive and varied windows. Here are a few samples. Via It’s Nice That. +

Please, Don’t Be a Dick

London-based brand consultancy studio We Are Goat wrote this book for working with designers, aimed at clients. You can buy a copy here. At first glance, I was actually under the mistaken impression that it was a book written by a client who had had a lot of experience working with studios and agencies, dispensing…

New York Numbers

Advertising copywriter Nick Dilallo takes pictures of interesting numbers he finds throughout New York City and posts them to his Instagram account. Personally, my favorites are all of the aging, weathered sans-serif numbers in the Modernist style. This one is not so vintage, but I think it’s fantastic: I asked Nick what inspired this project;…

Weather Underground Redesigns

Earlier this week, 19-year old(!) weather site Weather Underground launched its biggest ever redesign. I make note of it here because I’ve been visiting this resource on a daily basis for at least fifteen years; it’s been an integral part of my morning routine for as long as I can remember, and I’m very grateful…
