Numbers 32:23 says, “Behold, ye have sinned against the Lord: and be sure your sin will find you out.”

Galatians 6:7-9 says, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

Dr. Huxtable (Bill Cosby) has been found out and he is reaping what he has sown. A word to the wise, including Judge Kavanaugh, Harvey Weinstein, Bill Hybels, President Trump, and others: When you are accused of something, the best thing to do is to admit that you are a sinner and that you are capable of doing evil things. Perhaps you did not do the specific thing you are being accused of, but it is good for you to admit that you are capable of doing similar evil. Saying things like Judge Kavanaugh said in his interview on Monday, such as, ‘I was a virgin all thought high school and college; and I’m not capable of doing such acts,’ and talking about how ‘good and kind’ you are is asinine and makes you sound and look like you’re lying. I personally would like to see Kavanaugh become a Supreme

Court Justice, but he is not Jesus. All of us can at least admit we are capable of sin.

In Numbers 32, the children of Israel are admonished to keep their promise of obedience to the Lord as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. If they don’t the Lord promises them in verse 23, “But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be sure your sin will find you out.” Warren Wiersbe said, “Moses repeated their promise and added a word of warning: If they didn’t keep their promise, they would be sinning against the Lord, and their sin would catch up with them! The phrase ‘Be sure your sin will find you out’ is often used in evangelistic appeals, and it can have that application, but the original intent was to admonish God’s people.”

We all need to understand that it is important to confess our sins now because they will catch up and be revealed in the future.

25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

R.C. Sproul said, “We fail in our duty to study God’s Word not so much because it is difficult to understand, not so much because it is dull and boring, but because it is work. Our problem is not a lack of intelligence or a lack of passion. Our problem is that we are lazy.”

What else ought we to do to seek first the kingdom of God? We have talked about seeking the kingdom of God by thinking on the things of God and meditating on the things of God. However, seeking the kingdom of God also involves “reasoning.” Reasoning is “the action of thinking about something in a logical, sensible way”; it means to “understand and form judgments by a process of logic.” Reasoning involves vigorous, systematic study of the things that God has revealed to us in His Word. Yes, God not only wants you to think on His Word and meditate on His Word, but He wants you to study His Word.

It is through the Word of God that we will learn about the kingdom of God and how we ought to live as citizens of that kingdom in the foreign land of this world. Studying the Word of God is a lifelong process. It is more important than any secular education that you receive. The education of this world will only equip you to live for the seventy or so years that you might be here. But the study of God’s Word will equip you to live for all eternity. Studying the Word of God also helps us keep our minds on the things of God and off of temporal things.

There are many great resources at your disposal today that will aid you in a systematic study of Scripture. However, the most important resource is the Holy Spirit Himself, our Teacher, who inspired the writing of Scripture. As you read, pray for the Holy Spirit to illuminate your mind to its truths so that you can apply them to your life. Yes, you should read for inspiration; however, you should read for edification as well.

The Bible instructs us that we should “study to shew ourselves approved unto God, a workmen that need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” How embarrassing would it be for us if our Lord showed up, ready to receive us into the kingdom, yet we only knew how to speak the language of this world? Let’s not neglect the Word of God. Let’s read it, believe it, study it, and obey it. Let’s seek first the kingdom of God by reasoning with the Word of God.

Thy Word is like a garden, Lord, with flowers bright and fair;

And everyone who seeks may pluck a lovely cluster there.

Thy Word is like a deep, deep mine; and jewels rich and rare

Are hidden in its mighty depths for every searcher there.

Thy Word is like a starry host: a thousand rays of light

Are seen to guide the traveler and make his pathway bright.

Thy Word is like an armory, where soldiers may repair;

And find, for life’s long battle day, all needful weapons there.

Oh, may I love Thy precious Word, may I explore the mine,

May I its fragrant flowers glean, may light upon me shine!

Oh, may I find my armor there! Thy Word my trusty sword,

I’ll learn to fight with every foe the battle of the Lord.

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

Instead of being worried, fretful, and concerned about the future and how our needs will be provided for, the Lord has commanded us to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness. How do we seek God’s kingdom in a practical sense? Seeking involves thinking, meditating, reasoning and enquiring as we have already established. We seek the kingdom of God, first, through bending our thoughts to the things of God.

Second, we seek God’s kingdom by meditating on the things of God. While thinking and meditation overlap, thinking leans more heavily on the mind, while meditating leans heavily on the heart and the spirit. It is the difference between memorizing Scripture (storing it in one’s mind) and hiding Scripture in one’s heart. Yes, we need God’s truth in our heads, but it only changes our lives when we get it into our hearts.

Meditation has become a popular practice even in the modern Western world. However, when the world talks about meditation, it does not mean what the Bible means. So what does it mean to meditate as a Christian? Don Whitney defines meditation as “deep thinking on the truths and spiritual realities revealed in Scripture for the purposes of understanding, application, and prayer.” David Mathis writes that meditation means “to chew on something with the teeth of our minds and hearts, to roll some reality around in our thoughts and press it deeply into our feelings, to look from different angles and seek to get a better sense of its significance.”

How often do you meditate on God’s Word? How often do you meditate on biblical truths expressed and explored in sermons and songs? Meditation is key to a full Christian life. You must deliberately allow the truth to sink into your soul, not just so that you will know it, but so that you will believe it and live by it. When Joshua became the new leader of the Israelites, God told him three times to “be strong and courageous.” And how was he to do this? By meditation. In Joshua 1:8, God tells him, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate on it day and night.” It was not enough for Joshua to read the Law or to memorize the Law, but he was to, in the words of one commentator, allow God’s Law to saturate his life, give him direction, shape his mind, form his patterns, fuel his affections, and inspire his actions.”

It is the same for us today. If we want to be strong and courageous, empowered to face the difficulties of life and emerge victorious, we must meditate on the Word of God. We must consume it and allow it to consume us. And what joys await us when we choose to meditate on God’s Word. The psalmist confidently declares, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” Seek the kingdom of God by meditating on the things of God.

Charles Orr wrote:

Alone in some secure retreat,

The sky overshadows me;

All nature smiles so soft and sweet,

I’m thinking, Lord, of Thee.

Awaking from the silent tomb,

Thy risen form I see;

Thy saints awaiting Thee to come,

Are thinking, Lord, of Thee.

Thinking of Thee, O Lord, of Thee,

Musing on things above;

Till every chord within my soul

Is tuned with heavenly love.

Welcome to the Onward Christian Soldiers Discipleship Class. I am Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society and pastor of Gospel Light House of Prayer International. The purpose of this time together is to teach young believers everything they need to know about their faith in Jesus Christ and provide them with the knowledge they need to live victorious Christian lives.

Our key Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 10:13:

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Our lesson today is titled “How to Overcome Temptation, Part 96 (Anger and Wrath)”

In this section of our Onward Christian Soldiers discipleship class, we are looking at specific temptations that are, as the Bible says, “common to man.” We are looking at what the Bible says about these sins so we can be aware of its dangers and so that we can hide Scripture in our hearts to use when we are tempted.

The sin that we are looking at today is the sin of anger and wrath. This is the fifth sin in a list of 12 temptations that comes from two sources — one ancient and one modern. The first source is a list that was developed by monks in the early church called “the seven deadly sins” or the “cardinal sins.” The second source is a Barna survey from 2011 which tracked the top temptations Americans admitted to struggling with.

Today, we are looking at Psalm 37:8-9. (Remember, the text of this lesson is made available online after each class, so you can go to our website GLHOPI.com, click the “Onward Christian Soldiers” banner on the home page, and begin to learn these verses by heart throughout the week.)

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.

For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.

So far in this series, we have taken an in depth look at what the Bible has to say about resisting the temptations of greed, covetousness, lust, and sloth. Now, we turn to the fifth of the seven deadly sins — the twin sins of anger and wrath.

Anger is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a strong feeling of displeasure and usually of antagonism.” Wrath is defined in the Cambridge English Dictionary as “extreme anger.” Its synonyms include: anger, rage, fury, or outrage. The wrath of God is, of course, frequently spoken of in Scripture. But God’s wrath is justly directed against evil and evildoers. The sin that we are dealing with is the unjustified wrath of man.

Ephesians 4:26-27 says, “Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil.” While Scripture allows for justified and limited anger on behalf of man, man’s wrath is characterized in Scripture as fickle and foolish as we will see in the verses that we are looking at in this part of our series.

The first Scripture that we are looking at comes from the Psalms — In Psalm 37, we read: “Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.” The words “cease” and “forsake” imply a choice, a personal decision to abandon anger and wrath. The Hebrew word translated as “cease” means “to let drop, to abandon, or to refrain from.” “Forsake,” in Hebrew, means: to let loose from or to let go of.

In the justice system, people who have exhibited behavior stemming from an angry or wrathful disposition are sometimes ordered to take “anger management” classes. Counselors recommend that those struggling with anger adopt coping strategies, some of which include: deep breathing, eating something they really enjoy, leaving the situation for “cool off” time, or vigorous exercise like hitting a baseball with a bat until anger subsides (or until one is simply too tired to be angry). However, the Bible lets us know that we can be free from the grip of anger and wrath. We have the power to make a personal choice to be free from it. But, more importantly, we, as Christians, have the power of the Holy Spirit “to cease from anger and forsake wrath.”

If you struggle with sloth or laziness, take this passage to heart and begin to use it the next time you face that temptation.

5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.

9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

The Tragedy of Not Being Ready, Part 3

From this passage, we have established the context of Jesus’ parable, noting the likening of Christ to the bridegroom and the likening of His church to the virgins. As the ancient marriage traditions of the Jews tell us, the bridegroom goes away to prepare a place where he will abide with his bride. When he is finished, he goes to retrieve his bride, so they can begin their new life together. Unfortunately, in Jesus’ parable, when the bridegroom came at midnight and the announcement was made that he was ready to receive his bride, five of the virgins had no oil, and so could not light their lamps to go and meet the groom.

We often speak of the foolish virgins as though their error is simply that they brought no extra oil with them. However, that is not what Jesus states in His parable. Jesus says the foolish virgins had lamps, but had NO OIL at all. “They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.” The wise virgins represent true believers in Christ. The foolish virgins represent unbelievers. They may be church members — as we see in the parable, they are waiting alongside the wise virgins — but they are not saved.

Robert Deffinbaugh writes says, “The difference between the five wise virgins and the five foolish virgins is salvation. These five foolish virgins were not once saved, but then ‘ran out’” of salvation. They were lost, and never had it. They never had oil. They were just empty lamps. They looked useful, they seemed to give promise of light, but they never produced it.”

Jesus presses upon His listeners the importance of personal responsibility when it comes to our preparedness for His return. When He returns, there will be no time to get saved; there will be no time to run to the marketplace and buy oil. Some will go to meet the bridegroom, while others will be left behind. Jesus’ return, for many, will sadly be a point of no return. The fate of the foolish virgins ought to challenge us to examine our own faith, to ensure that we are truly saved and not just religious vessels putting on the appearance of salvation. Is Christ alive inside of us? Are we filled with the Holy Spirit? Do we have oil in our lamps? Are we ready for that great day?

Will Thompson wrote:

There’s a great day coming,

A great day coming,

There’s a great day coming by and by;

When the saints and the sinners shall be parted right and left,

Are you ready for that day to come?

There’s a bright day coming,

A bright day coming,

There’s a bright day coming by and by;

But its brightness comes only to them that love the Lord,

Are you ready for that day to come?

There’s a sad day coming,

A sad day coming,

There’s a sad day coming by and by;

When the sinner shall hear his doom, “Depart, I know ye not,”

Are you ready for that day to come?

Now, if you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, I urge you to trust in Him because He is coming again and you do not want to be left behind. Here is how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and the consequences of sin.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

G. Campbell Morgan said, “Now, says the Master, there is something you are to be anxious about, something to seek, something to consume you. There is something that ought to drive you, making every nerve tingle and throb, and every artery flow with force. What is it? The Kingdom of God.”

What does it mean to seek the kingdom of God? Dr. John MacArthur writes in his commentary on this passage: “If you want to be single-minded about your treasure, your vision, and your Master, you must pursue a single goal—move your thoughts up to the divine level. God wants to free you from the mundane, temporal, passing vanity of this life to seek the things of God. In His right hand are pleasures forever, so ‘set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth’ The Greek word translated ‘first’ in Matthew 6:33 means ‘first in a line of more than one option.’ Of all the priorities of life, seeking God’s kingdom is number one. It is doing what you can to promote God’s rule over His creation. That includes seeking Christ’s rule to be manifest in your life through ‘righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.’ You seek His kingdom when you long for the return of the King in His millennial glory to establish His kingdom on earth, and to usher in His eternal kingdom.”

How do we go about seeking first the kingdom of God in a practical sense in our daily lives? As we learned yesterday, the word “seek” involves four actions: thinking, meditating, reasoning, and enquiring into.

So the first way we seek the kingdom of God is through our thoughts. Thinking is vital to the Christian faith. The state of the mind has immense influence over the entirety of our lives. The French philosopher Rene Descartes is famous for the statement, “I think, therefore I am.” He believed that the mental process is what defines man’s existence. Proverbs 23:7 says, ‘As a man thinks so is he.’ What do you think about the most? When your mind isn’t engaged in other matters, where do your thoughts wander? If your mind defaults to worry about the future, or to how you can get more money or material possessions, or to some evil that you wish you could do, the kingdom of God is not first in your life.

It is hard, but we must learn to arrest our thought life and direct it to the concepts spoken of in Philippians 4:8: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” The devil will fight you on this. He will try to keep good things out of your mind and put evil things in your mind. He does not want your thoughts to bend toward God and His kingdom. He wants you to think about everything but. That is why we are commanded in 2 Corinthians 10:5 to ‘cast down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.’

We must make our thoughts obey Christ. As the old adage says, “You can’t control the birds that fly about your head; but you can keep them from making a nest in your hair.” Likewise with our thoughts: all kinds of crazy, interesting, genuine, tempting thoughts will flit through our minds every minute of the day. But, we choose which ones to focus on. If we have surrendered our souls to Christ, we must surrender our minds to Him as well — especially if we want to live a life free from worry, doubt, and anxiety.

These words by Johnson Oatman ought to express our deepest desire:

I’m pressing on the upward way,

New heights I’m gaining every day;

Still praying as I’m onward bound,

“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

My heart has no desire to stay

Where doubts arise and fears dismay;

Though some may dwell where these abound,

My prayer, my aim, is higher ground.

I want to live above the world,

Though Satan’s darts at me are hurled;

For faith has caught the joyful sound,

The song of saints on higher ground.

I want to scale the utmost height

And catch a gleam of glory bright;

But still I’ll pray till Heav’n I’ve found,

“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

After preaching the Gospel every day for 367 days straight throughout the 2016 presidential campaign season and preaching the Gospel every day throughout the first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s term, I am preaching the Gospel for 1,000 days throughout President Trump’s first term. If you think a new president being in office is the only thing needed to save America and ‘make America great again,’ you are woefully deceived. The church must follow through and keep the main thing the main thing: and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and praying for their salvation, for the problem in America is not only disobedient presidents, politicians, and people, but disobedient pastors, preachers, and parishioners who have refused to obey the Lord’s Great Commission which is to, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature,” and who have refused to obey God’s repeated commands to “pray without ceasing” for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders. So, we encourage you to pray for the new president, but not to get caught up in the political happenings like the world does. Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get their hearts right with the Lord. And that is what this campaign is all about.

This campaign is inspired by the following three verses: 1 Corinthians 2:2 which says, “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” Acts 5:42 which says, “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.” And 2 Timothy 2:4 which says, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”

This series is not for Christians necessarily. However, I do hope you are one of those saints who still loves to hear the “old, old story of Jesus and His love” — as another hymn says, “For those who know it best seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.” This series is primarily for unbelievers, so they can hear and understand the Gospel and be saved from sin and the punishment of sin which is hell.

G. Campbell Morgan said, “No life is complete that does not feel upon it some great compulsion, driving it.”

If we are not to be concerned about or driven by material provisions… if we are not to fret like those who have no confidence in God… if we are not to spend our lives pursuing money and worldly goals…, what then are we to pursue? What are we to expend energy to accomplish? As He continues this discourse, Jesus says, “But [instead of these other things], seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness…”

When we say that God will take care of us, it does not mean that we don’t have to do anything at all. It does not mean that we have no concerns and no labors. Instead, it means that He will provide for our temporal needs while we keep our eyes and our efforts on eternal things such as His kingdom and righteousness. Warren Wiersbe comments, “If we put God’s will and God’s righteousness first in our lives, He will take care of everything else. What a testimony it is to the world when a Christian dares to practice Matthew 6:33! What a tragedy it is when so many of us fail to practice it.”

What does it mean to “seek the kingdom of God”? The Greek word translated as seek means: “to seek [in order to find out] by thinking, meditating, reasoning, or enquiring into.” It means to “seek after, to aim at, to strive for.” Further, it means, “to crave, demand, or require” something. Ask yourself, What is the thing you crave the most in life? Do you crave the kingdom of God and God’s will being done on earth as it is in heaven? Do you crave personal righteousness? Do you desire it strongly almost to the point that you can’t live without it? Do you crave the kingdom of God like a man in the desert craves water or a man in the Arctic craves a warm fire? Do you long for righteousness like a drowning man longs for air or a wounded man longs for healing?

What is Jesus telling us? He is telling us that if we must burn the midnight oil, don’t burn it worrying over bills that you don’t have the money to pay; burn it in prayer and Bible reading. If you must fret and worry, don’t fret and worry over the near-empty refrigerator, fret for the soul of your lost neighbor or co-worker; be concerned about that, and let it drive you to witness to them. If you must let your passions burn, don’t burn for money and material things; burn against sin, your own sin, and labor to replace it with righteous living.

Eliza Hewitt wrote:

Seek ye first the kingdom; not the things of earth.

But the heav’nly riches change not, nor decay.

Seek ye first the kingdom; seek the gift of God.

Paul’s own testimony is almost wholly positive: salvation has brought him peace with God, access to God’s favor and presence, hope of regaining the glory intended for men, endurance in suffering, steadfast character, an optimistic mind, inner motivations of divine love and power of the Spirit, ongoing experience of the risen Christ within his soul, and sustaining joy of God. Salvation extends also to society, aiming at realizing the Kingdom of God; to nature, ending it’s bondage to futility and to the universe, attaining final reconciliation of a fragmented cosmos.”

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

1 Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved.

2 I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord.

3 And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.

4 Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.

5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.

6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

We are in a series of messages titled “Praying Through the Bible: A Series on Every Passage and Verse Regarding Prayer in the Bible.” The purpose of this series is to encourage and motivate you to pray to the God of the Bible. We highlighted each of these over 500 verses and passages in the Prayer Motivator Devotional Bible. So far, we have completed 315 messages in this series.

This is message #316 titled, Don’t Worry, Pray, and be Happy! Part 3.

From this passage, we have been learning through Paul’s words and example how we can, not just be happy, but be truly joyful despite circumstances that would normally cause worry and anxiety. The key to this way of life is prayer. Paul says, ‘Don’t worry about anything, but in every thing by prayer…’ When a thought of worry comes to your mind, stop and pray. When anxiety presses on your soul, stop and pray.

Then, Paul digs a little bit deeper and tells us a specific way to pray when we are facing the temptation to worry. “In every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Warren Wiersbe calls these three — prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving — “right praying.” He writes, “Right praying involves all three. The word ‘prayer’ is the general word for making requests known to the Lord. It carries the idea of adoration, devotion, and worship. Whenever we find ourselves worrying, our first action ought to be to get alone with God and worship Him. Adoration is what is needed. We must see the greatness and majesty of God! We must realize that He is big enough to solve our problems. Too often we rush into His presence and hastily tell Him our needs, when we ought to approach His throne calmly and in deepest reverence. The first step in right praying is adoration.”

How often do we focus on our problems instead of focusing on God? Far too frequently, we look everywhere and to everybody else before we look to God for the solutions to our problems. When we choose to pray in the face of difficulty — when we bend our minds and hearts to prayer — we are putting God first. We are saying, ‘God, I am choosing to look to You, knowing that You care about me in the midst of my problems.’

However, it is not natural for us to do that. It is far easier for us to focus on the things that are causing us to worry. Yet, when we focus on these things, all we do is dig a deeper hole for ourselves. A WebMD article states, “Worrying can affect your daily life so much that it can interfere with your appetite, lifestyle, habits, relationships, sleep, and job performance. Many people who worry excessively are so anxiety-ridden that they seek relief in harmful lifestyle habits such as overeating, cigarette smoking, or using alcohol and drugs.”

Instead of continuing to worry and putting yourself at risk of these negative consequences, put God first, pray to Him, and put worry behind you.

Annie Cummings wrote:

Father, in the morning

Unto Thee I’ll pray;

Let Thy loving kindness

Keep me thro’ this day.

At the busy noontide,

Pressed with work and care,

Then I’ll wait with Jesus

Till He hear my prayer.

When the evening shadows

Chase away the light,

Father, then I’ll pray Thee

Bless Thy child tonight.

Thus in life’s glad morning,

In its bright noonday,

In its shadowy evening,

Ever will I pray.

Now, if you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, your first prayer needs to be what we call the Sinner’s Prayer. First, please understand that you are a sinner, just as I am, and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
