Creative Control

Hugh Howey argues here that self-published writers earn more money overall from e-books than authors who have been signed by the big five publishing houses. The stigma attached to self-publishing seems to have all but evaporated in recent years. And hey, if two of my favourite songstresses – Kim Deal and Kristin Hersh – can successfully retain creative and commercial control over their music by selling it online, and even bolster their credibility in doing so, then we might expect already published authors to consider self-publishing as an attractive route to expanding their readership and writing the books they want to write. Quality, as ever, remains key. The reader who holds a featherlight Kindle, as opposed to a brick of pages, will still expect a weighty tome. Even if your work of written art - into which you have poured your heart and soul - costs less than a cup of aerated froth from your local coffee house.
