The PEN Institute
I am excited to announce the launch of The PEN Institute, a new entity of the Christian Editor Network LLC. The PEN Institute started in 2004 as a part of The Christian PEN: Proofreaders and Editors Network, which began when I had a vision to create a community for Christian editors. Education has always been […]

Mount Hermon’s New Director
Have you heard? The Mount Hermon Christian Writers Conference has a new director. And it’s me! I have loved this conference since I first attended in 1998, when Steve Laube encouraged me by telling me my writing was good. After attending four more years, and continuing to improve my craft (and in the meantime starting […]

Character Discovery
A warm welcome to my guest blogger, Aaron D. Gansky, author of The Bargain, The Blood Sword: A Hand of Adonai, Firsts in Fiction, and Write to be Heard. Tell us something about yourself as a person and as a writer. I’m a family man. So when I’m not writing, I’m home hanging out. […]

The New Christian Writer’s Manual of Style
When I heard that Zondervan was coming out with a 4th edition of The Christian Writer’s Manual of Style, I preordered it immediately. Since a portion of my Proofreading Secrets of Best-Selling Authors references the CWMS, I wanted to make sure I got my copy as soon as possible. So I ordered the 4th edition […]

Of Mondegreens and Eggcorns
I just discovered some new terms I’d never heard before! Mondegreen and eggcorn. Sounds like the title of a sitcom, right? But according to Grammarist.com, mondegreens are misheard versions of phrases, sayings, lyrics, poetic phrases, or slogans. Eggcorn refers to misheard words or phrases that retain their original meaning. Grammarist.com has a page (http://grammarist.com/mondegreens/) […]

You can do it!
“You can do this, honey. I know it’s scary because you’ve never done it before. But I’ll be right there with you. I promise.” As parents, we often encourage our children to try new things. After all, you never know what they might be good at or really enjoy doing if they never try. Our […]

Dangling Modifiers
When you begin a sentence with a modifying word or phrase, the subject of the sentence is what must be modified by that word or phrase. A “dangling modifier” is a phrase that does not clearly and sensibly modify the appropriate word. EXAMPLE #1: Changing the oil every 3,000 miles, the Mustang seemed to run […]

Is C. S. Lewis Really Following Me on Twitter?
Did you know that C. S. Lewis sends me Direct Messages on Twitter? Imagine! This icon of the Christian faith and author of so many classics (both fiction and nonfiction) is communicating with me on social media … apparently from heaven since he died in 1963. I didn’t realize heaven had Twitter. The latest message […]
