The age-old question: where do your ideas come from?
I think many ideas come out of the general “ether of knowledge”. You know how it goes: you read/watch/hear something one day, whether from a passerby on the street or from a news anchor or from an article. You forget about it. Three months later, your subconscious spits out a little seed of an idea that probably germinated from that tiny spark of information you picked up all those months ago—except that tiny spark also fused with your own personality and history, with people you know and morals you believe in. It becomes your own. I think this is why many authors will tell you that their story or character just “came to me one day, fully formed”, which is what frequently happens to me as well. I think this is also why great writers read, observe, and absorb as much as they possibly can.

“I will hunt you down. I will scour the streets of Los Angeles for you. Search every street in the Republic if I have to. I will trick you and deceive you, lie, cheat and steal to find you, tempt you out of your hiding place, and chase you until you have nowhere else to run. I make you this promise: your life is mine.”

Words cannot express how incredibly lucky I am to have the most wonderful, passionate, sweet, supportive publishing team at my side, and the most amazing agent. Team Putnam/Penguin, I love you guys. Agent Kristin, you rock socks. Most importantly, thank you to all of you who supported the books. I can’t say it enough! ♥♥

Kaede (pronounced ‘KY-eh-deh’) is my favorite secondary character to write about. Yes, she totally feeds my childhood fantasy of being a fighter pilot. And yes, this is a god-awful scan.

Must make gown out of book… about book gown…
If I could bear to rip up my children’s books I would so do this. This is a much better project than a duct-tape prom dress, methinks.
In which I dream
[I’m going to start recording the very random dreams I occasionally have. Who knows. Might be good story material one day.]
Today’s random dream recording:
I was hired by a mysterious company to date Chris Brown in order to give him advice on how to treat his girlfriends in a gentlemanly fashion. I failed miserably, he wandered off at the club, and then I spent the rest of the night complaining to a table full of the company’s employees.
Possible meaning: I need to stop reading celebrity gossip before bedtime.
