Disney & the not-so-inconspicuous attempt to corrupt minors

Now, I love Disney just as much as the next person. Disney World, Disney Land, movies, music-- hell, for the longest time, I had the BIGGEST crush on Robin Hood. Yes, the fox. Walt Disney's legacy has created wholesome, magical world of fun and fantasy, happiness and possibility. A world in which a child's dreams can come true with just a little imagination. All that said, Disney is not infallible. In fact, it could be considered an underground conspirator in the corruption of minors. "Gasp!"...

San Francisco's Projects: Sanctioned Racism? Descrimination? Class-ism.

San Francisco, a city built upon dreams of gold and grandeur. Beautiful, engaging, picturesque, the charm of its charisma resonates around the globe. For those of you who have not had the opportunity to spend time in this west coast gem, the streets of San Francisco vary almost as much as its people. Each neighborhood projects its own personality and character, drastically changing from one microcosm to the next in only a few short blocks. It is known for being a hub of humanity, of...

Remembering 9/11: Hope for a Future Yet Undefined

Remember, remember the 11th of September.  I debated whether or not to write and post this on the actual anniversary, but chose instead to wait a few days as the swell of stories and nostalgia ebbed and dwindled. I endeavor to post this, now, 9 years and a few days later, as a lingering reminder.  When people talk about September 11th, 2001, everyone has a story, everyone shares their story-- where they were, what they were doing, how they felt.  I don't want to share my story, but instead...

The Realities of the Fat Cell

I know I've been touching on body image, self-perception, and self-confidence quite a bit lately, but they are fiery topics that keep igniting, burning out of control and consuming their victims.  That's right, victims-- because they [we:] are victims, moths to a flame drawn in by the deception of the discussions, only to be entrapped in their detriment and scorched by their burn.

I see this repeatedly, women and men-- yes, even men-- succumb to the sheer madness of dictatorial beauty standar...

Bene Noire: Bared and Beautiful.

Film Noir, Pinot Noir, Spiderman Noir, and Bete Noire ...  now, Bene Noire. I'm coining the phrase.  Noire, a word usually associated with the concept of dark, moody, black mystery. Bete Noire- something that is dark, moody, detested, or avoided, especially as it relates to the all things nocturnal. Consider it a nightmare. So then, in my world Bien Noire is the good darkness... the good night.  Why the new term?  Because it is important.  Darkness and night, both physical and metaphorical...

Why Do Writers Write?

Why do we write? It's a great question to be considered. Writing can be lonely, self-effacing, all-consuming and alienating, yet we take it on— persistent moths to a retardant flame. And persistent we must be; in the face of rejection, denial, self-doubt, and the blank page, what drives us forward? What inherent mystery motivates writers to push through the suffocating madness of our own limitations— to react, skirt obstacles, learn and  evolve- first ourselves, then through ourselves, the...

Cooking Candidly #3: Spice it up for Ladies Night- Spicy Chinese Eggplant with Saffron Basmati Rice

Mmm, mmm, mmm! It is finally Ladies' Night and you've been looking forward to this for what seems to be ages! You've all decided, "hey, even though you enjoy dinner out, what better way to relax, catch up, and have fun with each other than to celebrate yourselves with a nice home-cooked meal, wine, and then head out to see the newest chick flick in the theatre?" Sounds great, right? It is, but you're now racking your brain for a great vegetarian dish with a bit of a kick that will tear up...

The Value of $10: Wisdom through the Sages

With today's economy, $10 never seems to get us anywhere, and rarely do we find a bargain for anything of true value for such a measly amount.  We may be able to purchase a cheap lunch, a weekday matinee movie ticket, or cocktail special from a local bar, but how fulfilling are these things, really? Are they not just quick fixes— a onetime piece of short-term pleasure, instant gratification that is digested and disappears within hours of its initial effect?  It seems that nowadays our search...

Are There No Sharks in Thailand?

Ah Thailand. When asked to think about what comes to mind we tend to envision beautiful palaces, great food, stifling humidity and pristine beaches. Thailand is said to have some of the most inviting waters in the world, rivaling even the most celebrated beaches of Australia, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Each year thousands upon thousands of tourists flock to its tropical sands and romantic private beaches, plunging into the coastal waters for recreation, relaxation and...
