Multiplex: Chapter 12 is now available!

Multiplex_Ch12_eBook cover

This is not Batman.

The Multiplex: Chapter 12 eBook is now available. This PDF strips #244–263 from the Multiplex archives, plus about five pages of new material, including two strips set on opening night of The Dark Knight!

You can buy them instantly through Gumroad by clicking on the image above OR through the Multiplex Store if you want it to take longer.

Bonus comics for Chapter 13 have already been posted for Patreon and Kickstarter backers, but the ebook won’t arrive until next month.

The Sessions: Voice Acting in Anime and Video Games

This flyer design (including the illustrations, obviously) was a quick freelance project created for Chris Rager, the (English dub) voice of Hercule in Dragon Ball Z and Torgue in Borderlands 2 — a.k.a. the two characters shown here, if you’re unfamiliar with them. He’s starting up a class on voice acting next month and wanted something eye-catching to help promote it.

I met Chris at a convention a year or two ago (that’s why he called me to do this!), and he’s a blast, so if you’re in the Plano, Texas, area and interested, definitely look into this course. The first class runs from March 15th–April 5th, Tuesday evenings from 7–10 pm. (Four classes for three hours each class.)

I don’t know any more details, so just read the flyer!

If nothing else, I thought you guys might like the illustration.

Multiplex will be back soon. (updated)

10425144_10152582438909363_5143540184672355962_n

Today, I said goodbye to my best friend and my uncredited assistant since Multiplex began. As you may know from previous posts here, he has had some health issues for a while, and… well, the short version is, a new infection (compounded by his other issues) raised the question of the quality of his life. We had a good eighteen years.

Good night, sweet boy. I’ll miss you.

Multiplex is taking a short break.

UPDATE: Multiplex will start updating again on 2/12.

Work on Book Three has begun.

Work on Multiplex: The Revenge (Book Three) has begun, with a handful of the bonus comics from Chapters 12 and 13 being posted earlier this week, as well as some behind the scenes stuff that won’t be.

If you didn’t have the chance to support the Kickstarter, remember you can always help support the book by pre-ordering a copy via BackerKit — or if you’d like to read the bonus comics as they’re produced, become a Patreon patron! We’ve just recently dipped below the $600/month threshold for removing the ads completely, and I’d really rather not start running ads again. Ads are the devil!

Patreon patrons have also gotten a sneak peak at some new designs for old faces that will see the light of day eventually… (How’s that for mysterious?)

Here’s the first panel from the longer bonus storyline I’ll be drawing in the near future. I really liked how this turned out; I should really suck it up and do more exterior shots.

Multiplex is back (yes, already!)

2015-11-01 14.15.23

Thank you very much for the outpouring of kind words since last Friday. It meant a lot to me, and I’m happy to say that I have great news: things may not be quite so bleak as I thought last week.

For some background, since I haven’t shared much of this publicly, my cat Punk very nearly died in September from a urinary tract infection. A slew of medicines turned things around after a rough couple of weeks, and he had two great weeks but then relapsed. As it turned out, the strain of infection he had was resistant to the antibiotics he was on, so he had to go on some new meds.

Because he wasn’t back at 100% (as close to 100% as an 18 year old cat with three chronic diseases gets, anyway), the recovery this time was very, very hard on him. Punk had to be taken to the emergency room last Wednesday evening, then he wasn’t handling the pain medication they prescribed very well — or eating, except when I would spoon feed him baby food — so I was… in a very bad headspace last week.

With non-stop attention and some tweaks to his medication dosages, he began improving steadily on Friday evening, started to eat on his own and seek out my company on Saturday, and he even meowed for the first time in two weeks on Sunday.

If this keeps up, this will be the third time he’s cheated death (last month, and a bout with pancreatitis a couple of years ago), but I’m still nervous about him relapsing yet again. There’s also the very real possibility that there is something else going on behind all his recent troubles…

But… he’s a tough little guy, and he’s had a great couple of days, which is very encouraging. He has even managed to get back to work on the strip with me (pictured above!), and we’ll hopefully be able to keep at it.

The Multiplex update schedule may be a little erratic for the next couple of months. If that happens, hopefully it will be because I need more time to finish my MFA thesis, not another downturn in Punk’s health. Either way, thank you for reading, and thank you for all your support — financial, emotional, and… egotistical?

Multiplex is on a short hiatus.

2014-03-02 13.02.03

I’ve learned not to discuss my personal life much online outside of a couple of the semi-private confines of Facebook, but this time is unavoidable.

My cat Punk has been my uncredited assistant for all ten years of Multiplex, and my best friend for nearly eighteen years. He is currently very ill and has been up and down for several weeks now, as some of you who are Facebook friends with me know. (The picture above is from better times.) Multiplex needs to take another break while I try to help him be as comfortable as possible, and, barring any miraculous recoveries, say goodbye.

Multiplex: The Revenge pre-orders are OPEN

Now that the Kickstarter project has ended and Multiplex: The Revenge is funded (yay!), I can open up the floor for pre-orders to non-backers via BackerKit. I’m using BackerKit instead of handling things through the Multiplex store (as I did with Book Two), because merging everything and keeping track of essentially two separate crowdfunding projects proved to be a huge headache; BackerKit streamlines that process for me tremendously.

NOT all of the Kickstarter rewards are available, and some are slightly different: i.e. you don’t get your name on the Acknowledgments page of the book, and while you can get vector portraits, I can’t promise that you’ll make it into the third book. (There is only so much room!) Some of the higher level rewards (like original comic strips) are not available, either — although if you have your heart set on one of those, just shoot me an e-mail, and we can probably figure something out.

The current stretch goal is to fund a second printing of Multiplex: Enjoy Your Show (Book One), a necessary step before I can doing a fourth printed book. The amount needed is $7500, with roughly $1,238.97 of Kickstarter’s surplus (the amount over the $24,000 funding goal) applicable toward that. Once this goal is reached, I’ll add Book One  as a reward goal for ANY Kickstarter or BackerKit backers (“preorder backer,” as they call them).

I’ll put up a few more visible graphics on the site later — there’s no urgency at this time, so I won’t be bugging you guys about it often. These BackerKit pre-orders will be open for several months and only “lock” in the summer shortly before Book Three goes to press.

If you do want to get your funding dollars in to help support the ongoing production of the book series, check out the Multiplex: The Revenge Pre-Order page on BackerKit today!

The Multiplex: The Revenge Kickstarter ends at 9PM Central!

Just like the headline says, the Multiplex: The Revenge Kickstarter project ends TODAY (Friday, July 31) at 9PM Central!

It has successfully passed the goal, so I do not need any additional funds to finish, print, and fulfill Book Three— but any additional funds raised will go toward the production and marketing of the book series: the creation of the bonus strips for Book Four (after Book Three is completed) or a second printing for Book One, for example.

While I will be setting up a BackerKit pre-order page to allow for “pre-order backers” (as BackerKit calls them) to order a selection of the physical rewards, many of the higher level Kickstarter rewards involve background appearances in the book and I need to lock down who those people are in order to get to work on the book. Therefore, those higher level reward packs are exclusively available to Kickstarter backers. Lock them down while you can!
