“Do you always answer questions with questions?”

He smiled. “Why should I give clear and solid answers to questions when they flow as dark and mutable as the mother river?”

Aidoneus grinned again as Persephone wrinkled her nose. “Forgive him, sweet one. He spends his days being interrogated by the shades.”

Charon nodded apologetically. “Your husband speaks the truth. The sad thing is that it’s always the same question I’m asked, and I can only give them one answer:

‘Because you are dead’.”

'I’m so happy that people like this line, because I was so unsure about whether or not it would work when I wrote it.' Are you kidding me - that has to be one of my favourite lines in the whole story! And one of the most romantic lines I've ever read of al

Thank you! You know, I know that everyone loved it in hindsight and on a certain unattributed post, the quote has gotten over 7,000 notes.

When I wrote it, I really liked the line itself. I partly got it from Revelations, and after I wrote it, I kind of sat back and thought… This works for me but is this going to work for everyone else? Is this way way way too much? Should I dial it back? Am I expressing what I really want to get across or is it going to ring hollow?

But I went ahead and included it anyway because it just felt right in its context. And next thing I know it’s the most oft-quoted line from my books, both in comments and reviews, and online. I took a gamble and it paid off. And I’m glad you like it too :)
