Yay! These arrived in the mail today. Receiver of Many and the sequel Destroyer of Light by Rachel Alexander (one of the best retellings of the Hades and Persephone myth that I’ve read). And a lovely print by asphodelon.

Do you have any resources or posts on kykeon or the use of barley, as well as the Eleusinian mysteries?? I would really appreciate it!
If you look through my essays I had some early abortive attempts at trying to make kykeon a year or two ago on Thesmophoria. You can find those posts in the section on my blog titled “essays”, where I also talk extensively about the Eleusinian Mysteries. I plan on making kykeon again this year, perhaps a little earlier, as I think I’ve finally figured out the correct ratios of barley and water to mint and honey, and will post the finished product here. (note: it’s a LOT less barley than I used last time).
The great thing about kykeon is that the recipe itself is written into the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, which is the text I’ve been using to try to recreate it.
*side note to anyone: despite what you may have read in “Road to Eleusis”, kykeon is NOT an entheogen. If you use my recipe expecting to have *ahem* visionary results, you will be sorely disappointed.
Read Receiver of Many for a book club through tumblr and finished it just a few days before Destroyer of Light came out! I was so excited there was a sequel! Started it Sunday and finished tonight (Tuesday)! Your books were books that pulled me in and made
I saw what you wrote! :D
Thank you so much for reading my books! I swear, that is the most wonderful thing to hear, when I can pull people into the world I created and they want to stay there. I hope you didn’t lose too much sleep over them :P
Anyway, I am writing the third book as we speak and I’ll announce a release date one of these days. There’s also a short story that I’m finishing up for publication this fall too, called The Thrice Plowed Field, which will be the story of Demeter and Iasion.
