Here’s my Sneak Peek from Loving Leonardo -  The Quest.

Setting the Stage: Plagued by disturbing dreams, Nicolas is beginning to wonder if Conte Bruno died in the fall as they had assumed. Now in Paris with plans to visit the Louvre the next day to see Leonardo da Vinci’s artwork there, Nicolas and his companions take in some of the sights. The trio encounter two gypsy fortuntellers, and for fun, have their fortunes read. The result leaves Nicolas even more unsettled. With good reason.


My 6-paragraph peek:


Unused to gypsies who peddled their wares across Europe, Ellie was enchanted by the idea. She tugged on my sleeve and encouraged a card reading. Luca shrugged and I found myself placing a coin on the scarf-covered folding table.


The elder’s smile revealed several missing teeth. She shuffled her worn cards and said, “The cards speak to you first, Englishman.” These she handed to me and I cut the deck into three piles as directed. I realized then that this deck of cards was not only quite old, it was hand-painted. Restacking them into her hand, she dealt three cards — the three of cups, the six of swords, and the five of pentacles. I looked at the woman expectantly.


I felt Ellie’s eyes on me.  “Well madam, what do the cards say?”


“The cards call for caution, Englishman.” She tapped the three of cups with a gnarled finger. “You’ve gained fortune in love. But this card is your past.”


Ellie looped her arm through mine. I could feel her thoughts. As far as she and I were concerned, it was our present and future.


The old woman tapped the six of swords. “Your plans will be postponed and sadly there is nothing to be done for it.” She stared at the cards a moment then tsked, then shook her head and tapped the last. “The card sees loss and… ruin.”

Today’s Calliope’s Writing Tablet post is brought to you by the letter F — F for Fractals and Fibonacci.


Before I go into the work of mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot, I’ll begin with a brief explanation of the Fibonacci Sequence. For brevity’s sake, I’ll skip the fine details of this mathematical creation, but I urge to everyone to delve into it. It all starts with a man of the Middle Ages, a mathematician named Leonardo Fibonacci. Once you understand it, it’s utterly fascinating, especially when you see evidence of it everywhere. In my understanding, the Fibonacci Sequence concerns these integers, or whole numbers, laid out like so:

0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89….ad infinitum.


See how that works? 0 + 1 = 1. 1+1=2. 1+2=3. 3+2=5 and all the way to 34+55=89 and beyond. If you worked this formula out on graph paper with squares and rectangles, you’d eventually get what’s known as the Divine Proportion or Golden Mean.


mandlebrotOk, so you have a basic idea of the Fibonacci Sequence. What about Mandelbrot? He’s the modern day mathematician who came up with the mathematical term Fractal, and he’s known for one in particular – the Mandelbrot Set. Suffice to say he used an equation that’s too over my head to explain here, but this is what he did — After entering the math into a computer, he got a computer-generated image that graphically represents the behavior of his  equation. And it had the old Fibonacci Sequence inside of it! To mathematicians, this phenomenon is unexplainable via their notions of how the math works. It’s still unknown as to why the Fibonacci sequence appears in the Mandelbrot Set.

When Ron Weasley inadvertently drank poison in the novel The Half-Blood Prince, Harry Potter saved his life by stuffing a bezoar into Ron’s mouth. A bezoar is an Enterolith — a stone-like formation, or concretion, found in the gastrointestinal tract  of certain animals, especially ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats, deer, and giraffes).  Just like a pearl forming around a grain of sand inside a mussel shell, enteroliths generally grow around an undigestible irritant such as a stone or piece of twine.  They’re mostly comprised of hair and stomach secretions and are really not all that rare. Odd to note, these stones have inexplicably built a reputation as lucky things. Odder still, enteroliths are ground and used as Chinese folk medicine. 


The name bezoar comes from the Arabic word badzehr, which literally means antidote. For centuries, enteroliths were believed to cure the effects of any poison, hence JK Rowling’s use of them in the Harry Potter story. This age-old belief was put to a test in 1575, when a cook at King Henry III”s court was caught stealing and was sentenced to death by hanging. It just so happened that Ambroise Pare, surgeon and bezoar skeptic, desired to test the antidote properties of the enterolith that day. Given the choice, the cook agreed to be poisoned rather than be hung.  Needless to say, the cook died in agony several hours later. Bezoars are also said to cure animals and people of rabies. This is done by attaching the stone to the wound to suck out the poison.


Considering their historical and modern uses, it’s no surprise that enteroliths are also called Madstones.  This makes perfect sense to me.

Today’s Calliope’s Writing Tablet post is brought to you by the letter D — D for Dolmen.


Usually, when people think of megalithic construction, the first thing that comes to mind is Stonehenge. The fact is, there are prehistoric stoneworks of all sorts peppered across Europe, the Middle East, parts of Asia, and even in the Americas. The early Neolithic period (4000 to 3000 BCE) saw a lot of this puzzling megalithic construction. One such enigma is the dolmen.


A dolmen, also known as a portal tomb or quoit, consists of large upright stones that support an equally large and flat horizontal capstone. It’s believed they were originally covered with earth and what we see today is actually the skeleton of the structure.


No one knows exactly who built them or what their purpose was. The most widely accepted theory is dolmen are tombs or burial chambers, but there’s little archeological evidence to back that up. The one thing everyone is certain of… they’re old. At least 7000 years old. This means the mysterious builders were contemporaries of the ancient Egyptians.

Today’s Calliope’s Writing Tablet post is brought to you by the letter C — C for Cryptozoology.


Fifty-four years ago, Lucien Blancou coined the term Cryptozoology out of a combination of three Greek words: kryptos, zoon and logos, which mean, respectively, Hidden, Animal, and Discourse. By definition, it is the study of unknown animals.


Global exploration expanded when man mastered the sea. New uncharted lands held  strange plants and animals never before seen.  These native legends, rare sightings, and tales of inexplicable bodies seemingly made of parts, weren’t believed to exist. On this skeptic’s list from the past are creatures we all know today. Here are just a few: giraffe, kangaroo, tapir, beaver, okapi, panda, duck-billed platypus, Komodo dragon, orangutan, and the living fossil fish, the coelacanth.


Then you have creatures on the truly odd list. The most famous is the Loch Ness Monster. Actually many large bodies of water around the world have purported Nessie-ish creatures — Lake Champlain has Champy, and the Congo River has Mokèlé-mbèmbé for example. Then we have the chupacabra, the Sasquatch, and the recently verified Giant Squid (the possible Kraken of mythology.) More often than not, Cryptozoology is dismissed as pseudo-science by conventional fields of study. I think it’s that whole Big Foot thing. :)


Several years ago I came upon a local legend and recently wrote a what if story around it.

The A to Z Challenge – B for Bioluminescence

Who hasn’t captured a firefly on a warm summer evening? I remember those bug-smelly jars with holes punched in the lids and a handful of grass on the bottom. In my Chicago neighborhood, mobs of children scrambled over lawns at dusk with one thought in mind – to catch the most.


Those summertime flashes are known as bioluminescence – a natural ability of some living organism to emit cold light. In our human experience, light almost always gives off heat: sunlight, firelight, gaslight, electric light, nuclear reaction light. In the animal kingdom, this heat-free process is seen in sea creatures, certain insects and their larvae, worms, and spiders. We also see it in mushrooms and bacteria. From the first time my grubby little hands held a stinky firefly I’ve wondered how it lit up its tail end. Now I know. :)


The cold light is produced by chemical reaction. One chemical, luciferin** is a substrate – a substance which is acted upon by an enzyme. The other chemical is the enzyme itself – luciferase. Different creatures produce a range of these chemicals, resulting in different colors of light.


Fungi glow bluish-green night and day. This too is a chemical reaction, but the verdict is out on just what the purpose is. Some scientists feel it deters creatures that would eat the fungi, while others feel it’s a way to draw attention and get better spore distribution. And others believe, in some species, this glow attracts beneficial insects that eat damage-causing insects. Bioluminescent bacteria are believed to use their glow to communicate with one another. While fireflies are somewhat yellow, marine life most often produces the color blue. This makes sense because the color blue falls in the high-frequency end of the visible light spectrum, meaning blue light would penetrate the farthest through water.


However it’s used, bioluminescence in the animal world has purpose. In the ocean, bioluminescence can  lure food, attract a mate, and warn off or make your shape visually confusing to predators. There’s a species of shrimp that sends out a cloud of blindingly bright goo in a last ditch effort to get away from whatever is trying to eat them. On the other side of the predator/prey relationship, the angler fish dangles his little “lantern” like a lure to draw his prey closer to his mouth.


Insects have both uses for their glow too. The nighttime flash of the firefly is meant to attract a mate. This summer, pay attention to how many times the fireflies flash. If a firefly flashes his light twice, it will attract a two-flash species. If a firefly flashes three times, that’s meant to attract a three-flash species. But there’s an interesting tidbit of firefly bioluminescence that’s worth adding here, there are predator fireflies out there who mimic the flashes of other species. They use their bioluminescence to trick, capture, and eat those unsuspecting fireflies who are just trying to get on with the mating business. It adds a whole layer of drama to a warm summer night, doesn’t it? What a wondrous world we live in.


**Luciferin was named for the fallen archangel Lucifer. The name means bringer of light.

When a group of Greek sponge divers found an ancient wreck off the Greek island of Antikythera in 1900, they came upon a lump of corroded bronze that astonished experts in the field of ancient studies. Under that corrosion lay an analog computer more than 2000 years old. Named for the island, the Antikythera Mechanism is the most sophisticated machine known from the ancient world.


Modern micro-focus three-dimensional x-ray imagery revealed a complex machine of small precise gears and fine inscriptions written on the parts. We now know the device was made to track astronomical phenomena, specifically the cycles of the Solar System.

Sneak Peek Sunday!

Here’s my Sneak Peek from Book 2 in The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo saga.


Setting the Stage: Having taken Livie north to John’s family on the reservation to keep her safe, Ash introduces himself to the Redleaf family. At this point, they only know of him through legends. I chose it because Ash turns into a rabbit.  :)


My 6-paragraph peek:


Manners dictated they not ask to see his transformation. Cora, the other non-Indian in the room, had no such compunction when it came to speaking the desire she knew to be on everyone’s mind. “Would you mind showing us the dog you were when Livie ran you over?”


Olivia laughingly said, “Hey. That was an accident.”


You could have heard a pin drop. Then Mayweather, Abbie, and John all rushed to say it was not necessary. Although Cora had only asked to see the dog, this was a sacred gift, not a sideshow.


Ash laughed and taking Cora’s hand, gave it a squeeze. “I would be honored to show this gift to you and I thank you for suggesting it. It’s important to me that you understand what was given to me and what I am because of it.” He went on to explain his grief and his request to watch over his wife’s grave forever. He did not explain that he was meant to wait for her to be born again. Perhaps one day he’d tell John. Rising from his chair, he stood in the middle of the floor. “Since the gift was given — in all these years — I’ve only ever shared this with John and Livie.”


They watched transfixed as Ash drew a breath and disappeared. All that remained was a heap of clothing and a pair of shoes. May and Cora gasped. Abbie’s eyes grew wide in disbelief. Winston went to sniff the empty clothes. Having seen this miracle before, John and Livie just smiled at one another. It was far from boring.


A small brown snake slithered to the top of the pile of clothes. Winston took a step backward in a dog’s natural wariness of snakes. Suddenly the snake became a fat field mouse. The mouse shifted into a small rabbit. Ears reducing, the rabbit became a skunk then quick as a wink it became a coyote. The coyote’s snout and legs lengthened and the wolf with the unusual markings took its place. He sat and gave them a very wolfish grin.

Spring is in the Air & a Sneak Peek!

First, here’s my Sneak Peek of my soon-to-be-released Enchanted Skye –


Setting the Stage: Jenna has come to the Isle of Skye to scatter her grandmother’s ashes. There beside the tidal pool, magic happens. She’s added seven tears to the salt of the sea and set in motion a charm to capture a Selkie’s heart. That heart belongs to one Alexander MacCodrum.


Overcome with sadness, Jenna didn’t hear the prayers. She looked out at the rocks where the seals lay amid the foaming waters and heard her Nana’s last words before she slipped into a coma. ‘I love you my dear sweet angel. I’ll love you always. You remember that, aye?’ The gray dust floated on the mirrored surface. Jenna murmured, “I love you too, Nana.” Tears followed the ash and fell like rain drops over the water.



The raucous gulls overhead pulled her attention back in time to hear the reverend say, “…I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft star that shines at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there; I did not die.” He finished with, “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.”



“Amen.” Angus echoed. He set a comforting hand on Jenna”s shoulder. “Take a moment lass, tell your Nana goodbye. We’ll be back at the house with our scotch.”



Jenna nodded. Gently tapping the urn, she let the finest ash fall with the rest. Alone now she hugged the empty vessel close and knelt over the floating ashes. She watched with aching heart as they drifted out to sea. Her tears flowed freely.

He watched with mild interest from the rocks. It wasn’t until Angus and the reverend walked back to the house that his interest got the better of him. He didn’t recognize this woman of the land but watched her kneel before the pool. Her dark sable hair covered her face as she keened and for some reason he was compelled to go to her side. Sliding into the water to investigate, the closer he drew, the stranger he felt. Only feet away now, he blinked the salt water from his eyes and watched her a while. The wind whipped at her hair and the sea mist clung to her clothing as she hugged an urn tightly to her chest. He knew what he was seeing then. They’d scattered ashes on the water. He considered her. Who was this woman to Angus?



Apparently sensing his presence, she looked up from her grief and met his eyes. Obviously startled by seeing him so close, the woman slowly rose and backed away.



His heart ached to watch her go and he found the feeling both perplexing and extraordinary. Then and there he knew he had to meet her. Taking a breath, he plunged under the water and swam to the far side of the cliff where the sea cave sat undetected. On dry land now inside the dark chamber, he peeled away his waterskin. And where flippers were a moment before, a man’s arms and legs appeared. Shaking out his spotted skin with a snap, he rolled it into a tight bundle and headed toward the passage.

The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (book 1 Ashkewheteasu)

Setting the Stage: Ash, an immortal Native American shaman, has recently entered the modern world. Here, quite unexpectedly, he ends up kissing Livie in the restaurant parking lot after a dinner date. Never exposed to beer before, Ash is a little tipsy.


His lovely dark eyes sought hers and the passionate yearning reflected there made her feel dizzy with want. He spoke in his language again and she shook her head, not understanding. He smiled, picked up her hand and kissed her palm. Closing her fingers around the kiss as though it were a tangible thing, he told her, “You make me burn for you Livie, but this is not the place to love you as you deserve.”

Not knowing how to respond, she took a breath and let it out slowly. If not for the fact she barely knew him, she’d ask him to come home and finish what he’d started, inebriated or not.

Setting the Stage: Ash uses the birdstone to take his consciousness to the spirit world and there meets the spirit of Nawkaw, his old mentor. Nawkaw has extraordinary news for him.


Everything as far as his eyes could see was a pure version of what he knew in the living world — every blade of grass, every leaf, all of it — edged in the white glowing light. Walking on, he found Nawkaw as his younger self, standing up to his calves in sparkling clear water. Spear raised, body poised, Nawkaw too was edged in white light as was the fish he quickly speared and tossed on the bank. Ash found himself thinking the waters of the spirit realm must teem with spirit fish, for he had caught and eaten thousands in his long lifetime alone.Seeing Ash, Nawkaw’s face broke into a happy smile. “So the bird has flown you to us. And I only explained how the magic worked once before I died!”

Setting the Stage: Nicolas and Ellie invite Luca to discuss Leonardo da Vinci, and realize they have more than one interest in common.


I believe we were all aware of a sexual tension growing in the intellectual-rich loam. There were little things at play now: the way Ellie moistened her lips and looked at us with eyes that lingered from one to the other. The way Luca’s irises had darkened from snow shadow to moon shadow as he looked upon her. The way I’d catch myself with a reminder to breathe as my eye was drawn to these small distinctions. Like da Vinci’s sfumato, our mutual attraction hung in the air, and I was struck by the notion that the smoky quality depicted in his art was desire. Desire like this.

Setting the Stage: In her waking world, Lanie knows Jason Bowen as the Victorian era ghost who haunts her house. But in her dream world, Jason is very much alive and well in his time. In one world she loves a ghost and feels the hopelessness of that fact, in the other she loves a man doomed to die. After being haunted for weeks, this is the point where he shows himself to her.


Lanie rubbed her eyes and looked again. Jason Bowen was identical to his photograph and portrait in form and coloring, and aside from that, she couldn’t say he was exactly there. His body wasn’t exactly defined, not transparent, not exactly translucent, just not altogether there. But there was a sort of substance to him as well as an edge of pale blue aura bright enough to glint off the porcelain sink directly across from where he sat. Unable to comprehend what she was seeing, she muttered under her breath, “You’re real.”

His laughter rich and warm, Jason said,“I was once.”

They were only words, weren’t they? If so then why could I see it, why could I feel this so acutely? I clicked send and waited.
