Just a spring clean for the May Queen

I love Spring. The green in my yard defies description. I know I couldn’t do it justice, and I live and breathe descriptive words. For years my family held a very large spring party, just because. Upwards of 40 guests would gather to renew friendships on a lovely day. We’d share, we’d eat, we’d drum and sing around a huge blazing fire. We’d always have a large project — raising a stone, planting a tree. Sometimes there would be dancing and archery, occasionally a craft. And as so many of my friends are artists and mead makers, we’d have a show and tell, and sipping too. Most would camp out and I’d serve a breakfast buffet the next morning. Fun times. Last year when my health crashed we passed the torch of our spring gathering to a much younger family. After so many years, I miss it.

A lot of people celebrate this time of year. The roots to rejoice the ending of the lean months of winter go back to who knows when. But from then to now it’s the same sentiment. We’ve survived another winter. I’ve been thinking a lot about that lately. Sad and recent news of an old friend’s diagnosis triggered thoughts and images better left buried. I lost two siblings to catastrophic disease. Terrible business that. Many of my dearest friends are older. A sad consequence of that is there are less chairs around the breakfast table than there were a decade ago. My heart aches to picture me eating alone on some far future date but my belief construct holds the door open. I’ll meet up with them all again. Thermodynamics says it’s so.  :)   Yes, I am a science nerd.

So I tackle the house each spring. I’ve mentioned before how I purge the unnecessaries from my life every year. People ask me why I do this. That’s easy. It’s because of Winter. Winter forces me to take stock. I sit locked up with my nine months of accumulated clutter — those shortcuts, incidences of laziness, declarations of a busy life, and inexplicable hording (how many rubber bands and wine corks does one person need?), and the whole time I think this and that must go. It’s a time to count important things. It’s a time to discard the unimportant, for really, we aren’t the same person we were a year ago. Some things just no longer fit us. Health issues being what they are, my “annual purge”  is way off schedule. When my arthritis cuts me some slack, I’ll finish. I have one closet left. But that doesn’t mean I’m not shoveling out. I’ve trained my eye on the laptop.

CaptureWith Loving Leonardo – The Quest out the door, I figured I’d clean up my files. Good grief. The job makes my remaining closet look like a small task.  The problem stems from harvesting files as fast as I could off the old laptop before it burst into flames. The new computer asked me if I wanted to keep both files or condense. I kept both, all, and extras. How can one person who knows better be so flippant with file names?? As the boss of this company, I’ve a good mind to put a reprimand in my folder. But then I’d lose it in the rest of the mess!

Jumping the Tracks &

I’ve said before, I’m shy. I’m far more reserved outside the realm of the written word. The internet has been good for me that way. I can say what I want to say and do it without feeling like I’ll implode. I can be anonymous to a degree. Before I walked away to pursue an author’s career, when my professional life called for the occasional public appearance, it was all I could do to stretch beyond that shyness to see to things that needed doing. After, I often felt like I’d been dragged behind the bus for several miles. For three long years I was the Chairman — the person in charge.  Talk about emotionally draining.  It’s hard to put on a face, a public presence, when you’re shy.  As a consequence of that shyness, promoting myself and my books doesn’t come easy. I was here recently doing just that:

http://www.joyfullyreviewed.com/interviews/author-spotlight-rose-anderson-2

With the launch of Loving Leonardo – The Quest (or LLtQ for brevity’s sake), I have the usual promotion to do. I did quite a bit of that this past weekend. As I mentioned above, it’s exhausting!

۞>>>>۞<<<<۞

I find myself with the usual after feelings.  It’s like anticipating each film adaptation in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. You wait, you watch, you wait for the next. Then you come to the end. You get a boost when the DVD’s come out and you watch them all like a fiend. Then they’re over. The Hobbit just doesn’t fill the void but you’re willing to see the rest even though you’re not that into it. The thing is, you’re not really anticipating. You’re in a different mind set.

Now what’s next for me? I’ve considered writing another Loving Leonardo while the Victorian language, history, and personalities are fresh in my mind. And I may do that for those very reasons. Always testing the trend, I began a story last year — another paranormal with potential because it’s based upon a family legend. I love facts I can shape and form into a story. Well, I got off to a great start then the idea for Loving Leonardo came to me like I was possessed, so I switched trains. Three books later….

So with this Isle of Skye tale I just can’t seem to get back into the groove. It’s a great concept story (if I do say so myself). I’ve written 35,000 words and stopped, wrote some more then stopped. I’ve written and stopped several times more. I want to finish it but I got off at the depot and I can’t seem to get back on that train. I have to ask myself why. Last night as I drifted off to sleep I asked some pointed questions about this story. Like all contemplations, one thought led to another.

Have I matured in my writing since I began this story and three books later and I’m just not that author  anymore? (That does happen. My writing is vastly different than when I began.) Or, is it because my business plan called for five erotic romances to learn on and this is my last? Is this some message from my subconscious that says I haven’t learned enough to tackle the magnum opus just yet?  Hmm…  This requires more thought. I have a few things to do first, then I’ll read what I have so far and try finishing the story again.  I can always test the trends and make larger changes. Or I can just delete and take it off the slate completely. Not every story is meant to be told. Even one that started off so well.

۞>>>>۞<<<<۞

The comments on LLtQ have been great so far. I’ve had quite a number of emails congratulating me on the new book. I’m surprised the story has fans waiting for the sequel. I’ve had comments about the characters. People have their favorites. :) That’s a wonderful feeling for an author. If you’d like more info on Loving Leonardo – The Quest, scroll down to yesterday’s post.

Sneak Peek Sunday & a *NEW* Loving Leonardo – The Quest

Sneak Peek Sunday Banner It’s Sneak Peek Sunday!

And I have a new book out! The adventures of Nicolas, Ellie and Luca continue in Loving Leonardo – The Quest.

Blurb:

Art Historian Nicolas Halstead never could have imagined a book Leonardo da Vinci created for his lover Salai existed, let alone lead to subtle declarations of love worked into da Vinci masterpieces. Nor did he ever picture himself a married man in a polyamorous relationship.

Happy and content, Nicolas, Ellie, and Luca embark on a quest to learn all they can about the greatest mind of the Renaissance. But their world takes a devastating and deadly turn that sends Nicolas into the seedy deviant underworld of Victorian London. It soon becomes clear that Conte Acario Bruno lives, and the madman wants far more than Leonardo’s book. He wants Nicolas dead and Luca for himself.

Here’s my Sneak Peek from Loving Leonardo – The Quest

Setting the Stage: Just landed in Paris, Nicolas receives a telegram from his housekeeper Mrs. Fletcher.

I had just removed my tie when came a quiet knock at our door. A chasseur met me with a silver tray in hand, upon it a telegram. I tipped the man and closed the door behind him. Confused, I turned to my companions. “I can’t imagine what this is about.”

Luca and Ellie both drew close as I unfolded the paper. It was from Mrs. Fletcher. I read it aloud,  My Dear Boy, Come home. Thomas has been injured and is not expected to survive. Come home. We need you. MF

Ellie laid a hand on my arm. “I’ll pack straightaway.”

I could barely breathe. My dear Thom not expected to survive. Needing the anchor of her love, I pulled Ellie to me and hugged her fiercely. An instant later, Luca’s warm body enfolded me as well. Choking back my misery, I said to him, “I’m leaving now. Bring Ellie.”

Winding her arms around my waist, she protested, “No. Nicolas, my place is by your side.”

Luca said, “As is mine.”

Release Day! Loving Leonardo – The Quest

Yes I’m smiling. Last night friends and family celebrated with the requisite champagne and cheesecake. This new release makes 6 books in two years. I’m not as prolific as some, but I am steady and I have a lot of stories tucked away in my imagination. I long for a cable to plug into my ear so I can upload all the stories in my head directly to the laptop. The backlist would be HUGE.  :D

The A to Z Survivor

survivor_[2013]Today Alex J Cavanaugh, the inspired mind behind the A to Z Challenge, sent round an email with the findings of the participants. So it’s time to reflect and add my findings to the rest. As you know the A to Z Challenge took up most of the month of April. It was my first event and I know if it remains an annual thing, I’ll be there. Nerd I am, I loaded my posts with all things fascinating to me.

Here are my results:

581 visitors

18 subscribers

Ok, I have NO idea how this is possible, but according to WordPress stats each visitor averaged 2.29 hits. What? How does one take a % of a look? Talk about a drive-by! The math makes that 1284.69 views !!?

The power posts were the historicals. At one point we had a nice discussion going in comments. The posts with less participation concerned nerdy science stuff. I may stick with the historicals.

Out of all, the most popular posts were A, D, G, H, K, F, N, Q, W, with G surpassing the rest. Assessing today, I see to some degree that my post visits per day reflected the act of terrorism in Boston. Tragic business that.

One fun idea came out of the A to Z. I so enjoyed talking about historical findings that I was inspired to created a Salon blog. I’ve been busy with edits, but when time frees up in the next several days, I plan to open that to anyone who wants to share historical info they’ve picked up here and there. I also plan to attach a yahoo group to it. Who knew blogging the alphabet would be such fun.

Stop by! http://anotherstoneunturned.blogspot.com/

Drawn to Cause and Effect

Coming off the A to Z Challenge like a junkie, I found myself making a bee line from the coffee pot to my blog. I’ve grown accustomed to a daily post. Still craving a daily dose of the A to Z Challenge? Scroll down and give it all one last read. :) Or head over to my Salon Blog.

What have you found on the web? What stone might still be unturned for interested learners? What can you share? I know I”d love to see! Read the details there and let’s start the ball rolling.  http://anotherstoneunturned.blogspot.com/

So an idea came to me this morning. I’ve decided to talk books, my books specifically, because very soon one more gets added to the stack. My latest will be Book 2 in the Loving Leonardo story — Loving Leonardo – The Quest.

teslaI’m a person who likes to test things for myself. That was the case even as a child. I wasn’t a dumb kid in line for the Darwin Award, but I was inquisitive. (For those of you who don’t know, the Darwin Awards are a tongue-in-cheek look at Darwin’s idea about Natural Selection. In this case, the stupid person de-selects themselves out of the gene pool e.g. they do something so dumb they end up killing themselves doing it. See www.darwinawards.com for some real doozies.) But unlike these poor unthinking souls, I was well aware of cause and effect. I knew if you did A and B, C was likely to happen.

For example: I knew the dangers of putting fingers by electric fans. That didn’t stop me from seeing what the fan could do to broom straws or tubes of rolled paper. Touch a 9-volt battery to the tip of my tongue? Sure, let’s see what that feels like. Popping the clutch on the car? How cool. I have always been drawn to cause and effect. As a teacher, I brought that curiosity into my science class. My students loved it. I also test myself where my writing is concerned.

I’ve mentioned before that I got into erotic romance because it was a fast track into the publishing business. I wanted to learn all I could so I could take that knowledge and use it for the 500k word, 5-year-in-the-making, as yet unnamed series I’d been working on — the work I affectionately call my magnum opus. I’ll soon return to that series and apply everything I’ve learned. When this journey began, I literally walked away from that project and dove head-first into the publishing world.  I’ve been testing ever since. It’s amazing what you can cram into two years.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll post the impetus and origins of each of my novels. I think some will  surprised you. :D

End of the Alphabet & More

Well I finally reached the end of the Alphabet in the A to Z Challenge yesterday. Boy that was fun. I already have ideas for next year. Today it’s all about finishing my edits — 23 pages to go, then a full read, then a new release! I’m only two weeks behind schedule.  :( Oh well, better late than never.

Two things before I hit that grindstone with my nose –

The Bump Off Your Enemies Anthology is out now.

bumpYou can see my contribution on Amazon’s Look Inside feature. It was a contest on Facebook that I found out about last minute and entered late. It was quite a surprised that they offered to include me. My little bit of the anthology came from my unfinished, unnamed, Magnum Opus (scroll back to previous posts to learn what that is). How exciting. :) I’m missing my author info after my snippet. The other contributing authors have in it, so I’ve put in a request for changes. I don’t know if that’ll fly or not. I hope so. It sells for 99¢ now, and there are Amazon free days scheduled for May.

http://www.amazon.com/Bump-Off-Your-Enemies-ebook/dp/B00CJWAVAQ

I’ve also put up a post on my satellite blog for the 1st Wednesday of the month Insecure Writer’s group. I stumbled upon that last month and added my name to the list because I read this:

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance.

Heck yeah I feel like that sometimes.  This business can lift you on wings because storytelling is artistry and it feels great to have your intellectual art appreciated. It can also drop you on the rocks. If there is anything I’ve learned in the past 2 years, I’ve learned there is no one set way of things and most of us simply tread water looking for a way up out of the pool. A little sharing and encouragement can go a long way. Come see http://calliopeswritingtablet.blogspot.com/

The A to Z Challenge – Z for Zeitgeist

zFor 26 days in the month of April, I’ve attempted to post an interesting topic for each letter of the alphabet in the A to Z Challenge. It’s been a fun change of pace for me and I look forward to the next. Hopefully there will be more in the years to come. Follow this link to nearly 2000 other bloggers and authors for one last chance to get your Zzzz’s.  :)

The A to Z Challenge – participating blogs

Today’s Calliope’s Writing Tablet post is brought to you by the letter Z for Zeitgeist.

Literally translated from German, Zeitgeist means time spirit. Distill that further and you get the spirit of the age. It describes the trend of the times be it intellectual, cultural, ethical, or political. Some consider the word has layers of meaning beyond its English translation. Words in other languages often do. A curious thing about using the word Zeitgeist, it can only be observed for past events.

There have been several notable ages throughout our recorded history, ages where thought and deed were so encapsulated in that time that when you reference it, it automatically puts you in a certain place in your mind. Wars often mark such pages in the annals of history. To get a better idea of what I mean, consider the Victorian Era for example. When you say Victorian, most people draw from it an image of opulence. As a writer who crafts in layers, I often delve into the spirit of a particular time period. Having a broader idea of the age you’re writing in makes a more believable tale.

To wrap up the A to Z Challenge, I’ll leave you with these Zeitgeists and a few words each brings to my mind. In comments, please share the words that pop into your head. If you don’t know them all, just skip. I’m somewhat of a history buff (aka info nerd). You should see the things in my mind I haven’t talked about! There’s always next year’s A to Z.

When I think of Salons, I think of the coffee houses of The Enlightenment where the great ideas of the age were discussed.

Being pressed for time right now with my edits, I’ve put my Gobekli Tepe post there to reanimate the discussion. Let’s talk about it or how about another topic? What have you found on the web? The A to Z Challenge – Y for Yellow Fever

yI’m participating in the A to Z Challenge for the entire month of April, by posting an interesting topic for each letter of the alphabet. This excludes Sneak Peek Sundays. Follow this link to nearly 2000 other bloggers and authors.

The A to Z Challenge – participating blogs

Today’s Calliope’s Writing Tablet post is brought to you by the letter Y for Yellow Fever.

The late 1700′s saw the French Revolution underway. At that time, Philadelphia was the largest city in the United States with more than 50,000 residents. Those fleeing the French Caribbean colony of Saint Domingue (known as Haiti today) landed on the Philadelphia docks. These French expatriates  didn’t come empty-handed. They brought a plague of Yellow Fever with them.

Transmitted by the bite of a female Aedes aegypti mosquito, Yellow Fever is an acute infectious viral disease seen in tropical and subtropical regions of South America and Africa. Like the deadly Lassa Fever, Dengue Fever, and Ebola, Yellow Fever is also a hemorrhagic (bleeding) disease. It began with aches and pains, and fever followed with nausea and dizziness. Symptoms initially lasted several days before tapering off.  When the symptoms returned, they did so with a vengeance. As the disease spread to the liver, this phase brought the name-inspiring jaundice that yellowed the eyes and skin. Delirium followed as did internal hemorrhaging (bleeding from the ears and nose, and black vomit).  In the terminal phase, the organs and circulatory system failed and death generally followed 7-10 days after the relapse.

Philadelphia was stifling hot that summer of 1793. By August, water levels had gone low and pools went stagnant to create a perfect breeding ground for disease-spreading mosquitoes. By the end of the summer, one-tenth of the population of Philadelphia had died and a cloud of stench and death hung over the city. What began with ten victims a day in August turned to one hundred a day by October. People left in droves and Philadelphia became an abandoned city. It’s estimated that less than 8,000 remained.

There was a vague idea the scourge was coming from the stagnant water and raw sewage, but it was the foul air that was thought to be the problem. A new outlook came out of the epidemic such as better sanitation practices on the docks where rotting foods and foul water sat beside the general sewage. Pennsylvania established a new Philadelphia Board of Health in 1795 to enforce both quarantine and sanitary regulations. Yellow Fever returned to Philadelphia each summer for five years then eventually tapered off.  The connection between mosquitoes and disease wouldn’t come until much later.

Side note: Well-respected, yet undeniable quack, Dr. Benjamin Rush, used every bit of medical nonsense he could come up with to fight the disease. I’d read his favorite treatment was  aggressive blood-letting — as much as a 5th of a person’s blood volume drained away to rid the body of ill humors.

There is an entire series on this topic. Without devoting too much time to put them in numerical order, here’s the expanded search page. http://bit.ly/183XkWf  On the whole, the owner of these videos has a vault of very interesting movie shorts.

Tomorrow, the end — the letter Z!

Setting the Stage: Nicolas, Ellie, and Luca pore over Leonardo da Vinci’s book of love. Coming to understand the mind behind the artworks, they employ Leonardo’s technique for using blindfolds to enhance the remaining senses.

We spent the next several hours discussing the extraordinary genius of the subtle gradation of tone found in sfumato. Unlike other artists of the age, Leonardo applied his range of earthy greens, blues, and browns in a glaze, each watered-down color precisely laid over a base coat. Adding form and depth to the subject and background, this fine application of color allowed the original layer to show through each subsequent layer.

Knowing technique like I did, I explained how this process of layering wasn’t generally used among his contemporaries because it was time consuming, taking days to dry between applications. His system allowed him to create the illusion of depth and distance. As an artist in the truest sense of the gift, Leonardo approached painting and sculpture from the mathematical perspective of sacred geometry. This perfect symmetry was what drew the eye all these centuries later.

Though my gaze was drawn time and again to the sfumato on each page, we’d agreed, for the time being, to wait and unravel the mystery one page and one message at a time. My imagination devoured the explicit illustrations on each slowly-turned sheet. Luca’s eyes met mine over a particularly arousing scene. Returning to the script, he translated for us a most beautiful expression of love.

Were I blind, my ears would hear your breath and heartbeat.

Were I deaf as well, my nose would find you by the warm scent of your skin.

Were I deprived of sight and sound and scent, I’d seek your taste.

Were I unable to see and hear and smell and taste, my hands would reach for you.

Were I a husk of a man, my heart would know you.

Ever the minx, Ellie closed the book and set it, and our theories, aside. She went to her trunk and withdrew three silk scarves. These we tied around our heads like blindfolds. Feeling our way to the canopied bed, she drew the velvet curtains closed and we immersed ourselves in total darkness. Deprived of sight, we gave over to our other senses.

I could see why Leonardo blindfolded himself. Submerged in touch and sound, scent and taste, I understood why he sought this heightened sensitivity. Deprived of sight, it was as if I’d been handed a key to unlock my other senses. The dichotomy of experiencing Luca’s firm well-muscled body and Ellie’s soft slender curves in complete sightlessness thrilled me beyond comprehension. Their breathy sighs and gasps filled my ears. Enveloped in the Stygian blackness, even the small hairs on my skin were as whiskers on a cat with which to feel my lovers.
