Prose Poem accepted for Spectral Realms #17

I just received word from S. T. Joshi that he has accepted my prose poem "Blackburn's Bloom" for Spectral Realms #17. He called it a "powerful piece of work", which made my morning. There it will join my dark ditty "Flower of Evil".

Interview with PGTTCM & the Gargoylicon

Tuesday evening I was interviewed by David Heath for an episode of the podcast People's Guide to the Cthulhu Mythos, which Mr. Heath cohosts with D. B. Spitzer. It was my first audio interview, so I was a bit nervous and ended up just talking out of my arse most of the time, but it was fun and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

On another note, I also received a contract this morning from Mind's Eye Publications for my submission for the Gargoylicon. It is official now and I will keep you all posted on any updates regarding release dates.

Carmilla essay accepted for Penumbra #3

My essay "The Many Lives of Carmilla Karnstein" has been accepted for inclusion in Penumbra #3, where it will join my story "The Highwaymen and the Hearse", the 4th installment in my Sanguinary Saga of Morbidezza Vespertilio, Vampiress. I just need to add citations, then it's a done deal. Very excited about this, since it began as a post on my Manny's Book of Shadows blog, then I expanded it before sending it out. I look forward to submitting more such material in the future.

Spectral Realms #16 available!

Spectral Realms # 16 is now available to order at https://www.hippocampuspress.com/jour...
This issue contains my poems "Altagracia's Lament", and "Hand of Glory", as well as the prose poem "Zwartenberg the Necromancer". Here's the blurb from the site:

Spectral Realms completes its eighth year of publication with an issue that displays the full gamut of expression in weird poetry!

Aside from contributions by some of the leading exponents of terror in verse (Christina Sng, Adam Bolivar, Ann K. Schwader, Wade German, Frank Coffman), we have such distinctive items as Ngo Binh Anh Khoa’s adaptation of a Korean poetic form to the King in Yellow mythos; Adele Gardner’s evocative poem on Edgar Allan Poe; David Barker’s ongoing reinterpretations of Lovecraft’s Fungi from Yuggoth; Scott J. Couturier’s tribute to the inherent strangeness of cats (“Gray Grimalkin”); Carl E. Reed’s grim ballad of World War I (“We Met in No-Man’s Land”); Margaret Curtis’s paean to the “Zombie Moon”; and Lori I. Lopez’s long poem on the whippoorwill. In addition, prose-poems by Maxwell I. Gold, LindaAnn LoSchiavo, Harris Coverley, Jay Sturner, and Manuel Arenas grace the issue.

The “Classic Reprints” include poems by two California poets of more than a century ago, Ina Coolbrith and Henry Anderson Lafler. Donald Sidney-Fryer reviews the correspondence of Clark Ashton Smith and Samuel Loveman as well as a new, expanded edition of Loveman’s collected poetry and other writings, Out of the Immortal Night. All in all, another rich feast for the devotee of the weird in poetry

HPLFF Postmortem

Well, I am recently returned from my trip to the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival at the Hollywood Theatre in Portland OR. I had a wonderful time and made a slew of new friends! I also realized that some day I am going to have to move to the Northwest!
Even though I was at a film festival, I only got to watch one film! I saw a full length feature period adaptation of the Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, that was a little different than the original tale, but definitely kept to the spirit of the source material.
The rest of the time I spent at the Jackanapes Press table, selling & signing books, and getting to know my stable mates: Adam Bolivar, Pete Rawlik and John Shirley, and Jackanapes founder/editor/designer, illustrator Dan Sauer. Everyone was supercool and I feel that I now have four new brothers.
Book of Shadows sold well for a first book by an unknown author and I hope to be seeing online reviews in the near future!

Penumbra #2 available!

Penumbra #2 is now available from Hippocampus Press. It features my tribute to David Park Barnitz, Dream of a Dead Poet, as well as tales, poems and essays by many luminaries from today's weird lit scene! Check out the blurb from Hippocampus Press:

The second issue of Penumbra is highlighted by “Lost for Words,” a new story by Ramsey Campbell, the leading writer of weird and supernatural literature of our time. In addition, veteran writers Darrell Schweitzer and Mark Samuels contribute original tales. Among younger writers, Curtis M. Lawson presents a science fiction/horror hybrid; Katherine Kerestman pens a skillful tale of vampirism; Scott J. Couturier, Geoffrey Reiter, Scott Bradfield, and Shawn Phelps offer glimpses of terror and strangeness; and Manuel Arenas contributes a moving prose poem. The issue also includes, as its classic reprint, Algernon Blackwood’s first published weird tale.

Among the articles in this issue, Martin Wangsgaard Jürgensen examines religiosity in the early tales of Lord Dunsany; James Goho analyzes the roots of terror in the work of Caitlín R. Kiernan; John C. Tibbetts studies weird elements in the oeuvre of acclaimed science fiction writer Greg Bear; S. T. Joshi presents a comprehensive account of the weird work of Guy de Maupassant; and other essays discuss William Hope Hodgson, vampire poetry, Clark Ashton Smith’s Hyperborea cycle, John Collier, and other subjects.

Adam Bolivar, Wade German, Ann K. Schwader, Leigh Blackmore, Maxwell I. Gold, and Frank Coffman are among the poets included in this issue.

In all, Penumbra No. 2 is a cornucopia of the bizarre in fiction, essays, and verse.
