Love Letter to My Future Leader Dog

As a "partially sighted" / "low vision" woman living in a world that values what is seen by the eye above all else, I can honestly say that embracing my identity as a blind person and learning the skills of blindness have freed me to experience life on my own terms.

Learning to use a long white cane empowered me to carry my head high without worrying about the ground, because my cane would tell me what my eyes could not.

The second revolution in my life as a blind person was making the decision to travel with a guide dog. This provided even more freedom, because I could miss that crack in  the sidewalk entirely and get to the back of a line with ease.

Both of my guide dogs, Thunder and Molly, not only helped me, but they also had their own sacred missions and touched countless lives. Both were Joy Dogs who, in vastly different ways, opened hearts.

When It was time for that horrible but necessary decision to say farewell to Molly, I thought I might not get another guide dog.

Then the reality of life without a trusted guide set in. While I still get around well with a cane, my life is so empty without a dog. While it's nice not having to walk a dog in the pouring rain or bitter cold, there's also no companion to help me deal with crowds and miss all those obstacles my cane finds that a dog helped me avoid.

So 18 dogless months later, I decided to apply for a guide dog from Leader Dogs for the Blind. It took 26 days to complete the application, which included a vide, 6 references, a doctor visit (which was a big deal because I don't do doctors), a vision evaluation (pointless as I'm no less blind than I was when I had an official letter from a previous eye doc), and a form so detailed I expected it to come with a cheek swab for DNA.

May 13th, I got word that I am accepted for a dog and will go to Michigan sometime, maybe July or August, to get my dog! It will be a whole new adventure for me as well as the dog.

Question

Whereas I chose and trained my first 2 dog from puppyhood onward, this time a trainer will select the perfect dog for me. I don't know what breed or gender.

I am thrilled to surrender to this new adventure, and I love my dog with all my heart, even though I have not met him or her yet. Here is my love letter to my future Leader Dog.

Love Letter to My Future Leader Dog

By Ronda Del Boccio

I can hardly wait to meet you, my dear Leader Dog!

The day they bring you to me is a big moment for both of us. You’ve left a family who raised you for a year or more to train for your new life with someone new. It’s a big change. I understand.

Don’t worry. I promise to take good care of you, with plenty of activities, snuggles and fresh air. We’ll live in the country and visit towns and cities. We’ll sit out on the deck at night and listen to the symphony of creatures giving their performance.

You’ll keep me safe, and I’ll give you lots of walks, games and fun adventures to keep your tail wagging and spirits high. I honor what you do for me and never take you for granted.

Whether you’ll be a boy or girl, a shepherd, golden, lab or goldador, my home and heart are ready to receive you.

How wonderful it will feel to touch your silky head for the first time and to feel the breeze of your wagging tail. For weeks I have imagined feeling your warmth beside me.

This new life of ours will be an adventure full of discoveries as we become acquainted. I will tune into you and you into me as we learn each other’s ways. You’ll find I’m NOT perky in the morning and that I love rain.

I want to know every inch of you from nose to tail.

So many things I wonder.

Did they let you keep the toy you love most to bring home with us? Do you prefer squeakies? Plushies? Tugs? I’m coming prepared with one you’ll love so we can play together right away. And I can hardly wait to take you toy shopping to let you choose what you want for yourself! That will be so much fun.

Does food or affection motivate you? Are vegetables poison or tempting treat?

Where do you most love to be rubbed? Belly? Chest? Tummy? Ears? I shall find your favorite spots and rub them daily.

You, my magnificent Leader Dog, are destined to touch lives everywhere you go,bringing smiles, love, and all that only a dog can give.

Although we haven’t met, I love you with all my heart. From the moment we meet for the rest of your life, you’ll have all the love a life can hold.

Love,

Your soon-to-be New Mommy

Book Review of Cozy Mystery Cream Puff Murder (Hannah Swensen Series, Book 11) by Joanne Fluke

This entry is part 25 of 26 in the series Fiction Book Reviews

Welcome back to another Write On Purpose book review. Each week, I review a well-written book, highlighting what makes it good from the reader’s perspective and what writing skills and techniques make it an irresistible read. Thus, each review serves both writers and readers.

This week it's a cozy mystery from the Murder, She Baked series by Joanne Fluke.

I've been reading the series from the first, The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder. Each book includes recipes. Most are for cookies, but there are some for casseroles, cakes, and other asty foods.

The first book is now a movie that received tremendous ratings on the Hallmark Movies and Mysteries Channel. That channel isn't in my package, so I haven't seen it, but I'm a Hannah fan and hope I can get it soon.

the Cream Puff Murder:

Bakery owner Hannah Swensen has a dress to fit into and a Cream Puff Murder by Joanne Flukedate with her sister, Andrea, at Lake Eden's new health club, Heavenly Bodies. Dragging herself out of bed on a frigid Minnesota morning for exercise, of all things, is bad enough. Discovering the body of man-eating bombshell Ronni Ward floating in the gym's jacuzzi? Okay, that's worse. Nor does it help that there's a plate of The Cookie Jar's very own cream puffs garnishing the murder scene.

Trying to narrow the list of Ronni's enemies down to fewer than half the town's female population, Hannah has her plate full. Trouble is, when it comes to cookies--and to murder--there's always room for one more. . .

"Foodie fans will eat up Fluke's cozy. . . A fluffy mix of sweets and suspense." --Publishers Weekly

"Entertaining and sprinkled with tempting recipes. It's a sweet treat of a novel." --The Star Tribune (Minneapolis, MN)

"A tasty treat." --Kirkus Reviews

Did I find this book to be a worthy read?

Fun Recipes

Some cozy mystery series bring in an interesting added element that draws readers. The amateur sleuth Hannah Swensen owns a shop called The Cookie Jar. Every book has recipes the reader can make.  I've read a bunch of the books and just made one of the recipes for the first time.

My dad loves pistachios, and when I found the recipe in this boo, I HAD to make them for him on his upcoming visit. Here's a photo.

Pistachio Cookies An Engaging Core Cast

Cozies have a core cast with whom the reader becomes involed. This series follow Hannah, her pushy mother, her sisters, love interests, and various people in the town

Hannah's "slaydar" upsets her mother but is the basis for her crime solving. I enjoy the cast of characters. Ronni Ward, offed in this story, has been in several of the books. Typical o the cozy, the victim is often someone many people will not miss.

In a world in which shows and books are getting progressively more brutal and graphic, I appreciate ones that are a bit cleaner.

Fluke does a great job across the series of creating an interesting town full of people who have different personalities, goals, strengths and foibles.

Funny But Ridiculous Plot elements

I love the series, but this is my least favorite in terms of the plot. There are a few things that, while funny, simply are too ridiculous to work.

The entire police force recuse themselves or are under suspicion of committing murder, so they can't investigate.  Yeah, right. My willing suspension of disbelief won't let go that far. It caused some funny scenes, with them running messages through Hannah's family members to get her to investigate the murder.

In case you have never heard the term, "willing suspension of disbelief" is what allows a reader of a book or viewer of a show or movie to enter the world of the story and allow for things like Harry Potter's magic or amateur sleuths solving crimes for the police.

If the whole police force being unable to work a case wasn't wacko enough, a big city cop came to take over and also deferred to a baker/amateur sleuth. That was WAY too far over the line of disbelief.

Your plot still has to make some sort of sense, even though cozy lovers are willing to put up with more wooly logic than true crime enthusiasts, but still, the plot needs to track.

Also, one of the auxiliary goals for Hannah is to lose enough weight to fit into a dress for her mother's book signing. Exercising and eating a lot of tasteless chicken (why when there are so many more tasty things to make or even tasty ways to fix chicken that are tasty and healthy?) she manages to lose about 20 pounds in 2 weeks. Yeah, right.

So while this easy read was more entertaining than some other things, it isn't a favorite. And yet, I am still a Hannah fan.

Sticking wit the Series

Even though this isn't my favorite, I am still a Hannah fan and will definitely keep reading the series. Every book can't be fabulous, right?

Book Review of Amish Science Fiction Brother, Frankenstein by Michael Bunker

This entry is part 24 of 24 in the series Fiction Book Reviews

elcome back to another Write On Purpose book review. Each week, I review a well-written book, highlighting what makes it good from the reader’s perspective and what writing skills and techniques make it an irresistible read. Thus, each review serves both writers and readers.

This week, it's an Amish science fiction novel called Brother, Frankenstein by Michael Bunker.

Yes, I said "Amish science fiction." Have you heard of it?

It sounds like a strange combination, doesn't it? Yet in the hands of a skilled wordsmith, it can definitely work.

Here's the book description from Amazon:

Dr. Chris Alexander, a borderline sociopath and Brother, Frankenstein amish science fiction book by Michael Bunkertechnological genius, has designed an advanced cybernetic life form from prototype decommissioned military drones and top-secret experimental DARPA technology.

The HADroid was supposed to be a military grade robot with the transplanted heart and brain of a human donor that would “transform” into a devastating state of the art war machine when activated by its onboard human operator.

But when the mad doctor steals the dying child of a simple Amish couple and transplants the brain and cardiovascular system of their dying eleven year old autistic son into the incredibly lethal robot the dark forces of government come looking for their investment. Dr. Alexander and the monster escape into another Amish community to hide among the plain folk while Frank, the autistic eleven year old boy trapped inside the body of the world’s most deadly robot, befriends another child who will help the prisoner inside the machine to leave the world of autism and understand what it means to be human and Amish.

But tensions arise among the plain and pacifistic yet closed minded Amish as they begin to suspect just what kind of technological monstrosity is hiding among them, and before long hard men who do the government’s most dirty deeds will come looking for a killing machine only to find a boy named Frank who has the power to defend a closed society from the worst of the world.

Did I think reading Brother, Frankenstein  was a good use of my time?

Read my 5 star review of Brother, Frankenstein on Fmazon

As I often say, "I don't usually read this type of book." I'm not a big fan of apocalyptic books in general, but this book was so good I'm glad I read it.

  5 Star Review Graphic
Why this book worked for me

I loved reading a book in which the POV character is a sociopathic doctor. Usually, a book follows the "good guy." This time, you just KNOW it's going to go from bad to worse, yet knowing that, and knowing it's a twist on Frankenstein's monster, takes absolutely nothing away from the reading.

Many science fiction books are technology focused, hence SCIENCE fiction. This book certainly has science and technology, but the characters drive the storytelling. You get to watch the megalomaniacal doctor Chris Alexander make a catastrophic choice live with the harm he causes.

Dr. Alexander is an interesting character. Bunker tells his story masterfully. This book sticks with me after reading, providing a "book hangover," as we call it.

I also loved the combination of the plain lifestyle of the Amish with the high tech world. Frank, the autistic Amish boy who becomes the world's most powerful weapon, provides a complex and fascinating backdrop for the catastrophe to come. Rescued from death by the sociopathic doctor, he becomes everyone's worst nightmare.

Well-crafted storytelling

Bunker wrote the book in present tense, adding an urgency to the apocalyptic tale When poorly done, present tense distracts. Here, it's only noticeable to me because I am an author looking for the elements of craft as well as an enjoyable read. It will not detract from the story in the least.

Character development is important to me as a reader. I found even some of the minor characters interesting.

Book Review for Authors: Using Twitter for Business by Paul Teague

This entry is part 1 of 2 in the series Twitter for Authors

Starting now, each month on the last Thursday I'll do a review of a book of value and interest to authors.

Do you use Twitter?

Do you like it?  Does it drive you nuts?

At my last live event, several authors came up and said one of these things regarding Twitter:

"It's so stupid."
"It's a waste of time."
"I just don't get it."
"I don't understand why it's important."

Stuff Made Simple Guide

OK, it CAN be a stupid waste of time. But so can nearly anything else in life, if yu think about it. The trick is knowing how to make it work for you.

Readers of many genres are on Twitter looking for their next good read. you want to be there too. But like anything else, there's a learning curve. There are los of ways to NOT have Twitter work well for you.

Twitter, as Paul Teague points out in his book Using Twitter for Business, is a valuable piece of web real estate. That doesn't mean yui need to spend hours and days messing with it, though.

It really helps if you can have someone show you the ropes, as they say, without you having to fumble around. Is this book a guide I would recommend?

My Book Review  of Using Twitter for Business by Paul Teague

I gave Twitter for Business from the Stuff Made Simple series 5 stars on Amazon.

5 Star Review Graphic

Well Organized

Before you even get into the table of contents, there's a section I recommend all authors include in your nonfiction: How this book will help you. That means if you read this section, you gain insight into how best to apply what you learn.

The chapters walk you through everything, from setting up your account to adding the header and profile image to optimizing your profile for search engines to actual tweeting.

Each chapter takes it a bite at a time. Teague does a great job chunking it down and making it, as the series name implies, simple. Twitter for Business is book for in the Stuff Made Simple Series.

I've been on Twitter for years, and I learned about a newer feature that was news to me. Yay.

If you're baffled by Twitter, by all means grab this book and work your way through each chapter. You'll be on top of it in no time.

With my team, I built and managed a new BBC web site and won two international web awards, a Webby in 2006 and a W3 award in 2009.

Although I've been working online since 2001, it was in 2010 that I finally left the BBC to pursue my own interests, launching numerous digital products, a successful Facebook software and training hundreds of webinar attendees across the globe via coaching sessions and online membership groups.
