A Silent Witness by R. Austin Freeman

Another solo finished, in English this time, a detective novel.

In this detective novel, the young doctor Humphrey Jardine stumbles upon a corpse during a walk near Hampstead Heath in the middle of the night. However, when he returns to the spot with a police officer, the corpse has disappeared. And this is just the start of a series of strange and sometimes life threatening events. Had it really been a dead man he had seen? And if so, who was it? And what is the role of the mysterious Mrs. Samway, who keeps popping up wherever he goes? He will need the help of Dr. John Thorndyke to solve this mystery.

It may take a few months for me to take up a new solo seriously, due to work circumstances – but we’ll see.

Ik en mijn speelman / Legamus

Een nieuw solo luisterboek in het Nederlands is af: ‘Ik en mijn speelman’ van Aart van der Leeuw (1876-1931).

Een jonge edelman, Claude de Lingendres, ontvlucht een gearrangeerd huwelijk in de Middeleeuwen, en trekt met de speelman Valentijn de wereld in. Zo beleven ze spannende avonturen. Droom en werkelijkheid liggen hierbij vaak dicht bij elkaar.

Dit keer niet bij Librivox, maar op de Europese zuster-site Legamus. De reden daarvoor? Dit boek is oorspronkelijk gepubliceerd in 1927 – dus volgens de Amerikaanse copyright-regels zijn de auteursrechten nog niet verlopen (na 1923). Maar in Europa (en sommige andere delen van de wereld) is dat wel zo: daar geldt de regel dat de auteur meer dan 70 jaar overleden moet zijn. Dus Legamus biedt een platform om luisterboeken te maken (onder vergelijkbare omstandigheden als bij Librivox) van boeken die na 1923 gepubliceerd zijn, maar waarvan auteurs meer dan 70 jaar dood zijn.

Ieder jaar zullen er meer boeken beschikbaar komen onder deze regels – dus we kunnen voorlopig nog even vooruit.

Twee maanden geleden trouwens nog een Engelstalige solo op Librivox voltooid – en helemaal vergeten te rapporteren hier: The Awkward Age door Henry James.

Nanda Brookenham is coming of age, and thus ‘coming out’ in London society – which leads to complications in her family’s social set in London’s fin de siècle life. James presents the novel almost entirely in dialogue, an experiment that adds to the immediacy of the scenes but also creates serious ambiguities about characters and their motives.

Anthony Trent

Just completed another solo on Librivox, in English – after again several months of lack of recording.

“The secret of the silver car” is an adventure story – hero is Anthony Trent.

Before he went to join the Armed Forces in World War I France, Anthony Trent had a successfull secret ‘career’ as a master criminal in the USA, never caught by the police (see ‘Anthony Trent, Master Criminal’). The war has just ended – but now Anthony Trent seriously fears exposure. While in the trenches, an explosion buried him alive, along with an English soldier. Thinking they would never get out alive, Anthony revealed his identity to the other soldier – just before they were rescued and separated. After recovering from his injuries, all Anthony can think about is finding the English soldier – to thank him for saving his life, but also to know whether the man will betray his big secret. His search is full of adventures, including espionage, blackmail and love.

And actually, I recorded the first ‘Anthony Trent’ book last year, and forgot to post it here.

In 1918, Anthony Trent, a well-educated young man in his late twenties, lives an unsatisfactory life in a New York boarding house. He writes successful crime fiction stories, but this doesn’t pay enough for him to do the things he wants. Things change when he starts to put his knowledge of crime to a practical use… It gets him into serious trouble before long.

(The download counter for this work at Archive.org after 8 months is already at over 30,000 – unexpectedly high, not sure why – it’s a fun, light-hearted book, but it was pretty obscure to me).

(The author only died in 1963, but the works were first published in the USA before 1923 – so have lost their copyright in the USA and fall under the ‘Rule of Shorter Term’, so are also ‘public domain’ in countries that accept the ‘Rule of Shorter Term’, such as The Netherlands)

Het heilige weten: laatste deel van de Boeken der Kleine Zielen

Het is zover: ik heb het einde van de Boeken der Kleine Zielen bereikt. Ruim op tijd voor de 150ste geboortedag van Louis Couperus.

Het is 10 jaar na het derde deel, “Zielenschemering”. Addy is inmiddels dokter, getrouwd met Mathilde en vader van twee kleine kinderen. Zij wonen in de grote, sombere villa in Driebergen die hij ge-erfd heeft van zijn grootouders. Bij hem in (en in de buurt) wonen een groot aantal familieleden die we kennen uit de vorige delen, onder andere zijn ouders en de kinderen van Constance’s overleden broer. Addy is de spil van de familie geworden. Hij weet altijd wat het beste is voor iedereen om hem heen, behalve voor zichzelf. (Samenvatting door Anna Simon)

An Irishman’s difficulties with the Dutch language

Deze solo is nu sinds een week klaar: An Irishman’s difficulties with the Dutch language. Een apart boekje, geschreven in 1908 door een Ier die als expat in Nederland werkte. Bij het leren van de Nederlandse taal vielen hem allerlei grappige situaties en misverstanden op, en die heeft hij verwerkt in een fictief verhaal. Sommige zaken zijn erg herkenbaar: zo moest de hoofdpersoon ook al in 1908 op zoek naar een afgelegen pension, want in de grote hotels kreeg hij niet de kans om Nederlands te leren omdat iedereen in het Engels tegen hem begon te praten. Andere dingen zijn echt verouderd: bijvoorbeeld, het woord “bliksem” is blijkbaar een ernstig scheldwoord, tenzij gebruikt in min of meer wetenschappelijke zin – en de verwarring rond het woord “D-trein” begreep ik pas toen ik vond dat de term D-trein in die tijd gebruikt werd voor sneltrein of intercity… Maar luister en oordeel zelf.

Veel dank aan de proefluisteraar: Availle! (Ik ben trouwens erg benieuwd of iemand dit boek gaat luisteren: het is immers alleen te begrijpen door mensen die zowel Engels als Nederlands begrijpen… Maar tot mijn verbazing is het in de eerste week al 297 keer gedownload – dat is 2x zoveel als Zielenschemering, dat 2 maanden langer klaar is, terwijl “In Brief Authority” nu op 372 downloads staat, terwijl dat toch al 6 weken langer beschikbaar is.)

Jack O’Neill, an Irishman, has just returned from a month’s holiday in The Netherlands. Before he left, he had boasted to his friends that he would learn the Dutch language within a fortnight. On his return, he has to admit that it wasn’t quite that easy… He tells his friends stories about his clumsy attempts to speak Dutch, leading to many funny scenes.

This audiobook contains both “An Irishman’s difficulties with the Dutch language” and its sequel “Jack O’Neill’s further adventures in Holland”.

Nu is Couperus weer aan de beurt: ik heb een begin gemaakt aan Het heilige weten, het vierde en laatste deel van de Boeken der Kleine Zielen. Geen idee wanneer het af zal zijn, maar het komt er aan!

In Brief Authority

The next completed solo is an English one again: In Brief Authority – a mostly light-hearted comedy from 1915, though it has a few more serious twists. I actually finished recording this in 2012, before I started the last Dutch solo, but had to wait a bit for everything to be checked (‘proof-listened’).

Satiric comedy from 1915 about a nouveau riche British family and their nanny who get whisked off to Maerchenland (‘the land of Fairy Tales’) one evening in a car drawn by storks. The matron of the family, a thorough snob, is crowned Queen of the country by mistake. She is quick to accept her new position and is determined to introduce British social niceties in her realm. And this really is the land of Fairy Tales, with gnomes, giants, a dragon, magic, a fairy godmother and more. Trouble quickly starts to brew as the royal couple and their son introduce things like capitalism and golf. When gradually a few people find out who should actually have been the new ruler, things get more and more complicated. A bit of romance is thrown into this mixture as well. You’ll have to listen to find out whether everyone lives happily ever after.

In the preface and epilogue, the author won’t let his audience forget the troubled times in the real world, in the heat of World War I. (Summary by Anna Simon)

Zielenschemering: deel 3 van de Boeken der Kleine Zielen

Het is ook stilstaan of hollen: ik had zo de smaak te pakken dat Zielenschemering nu al af is. Weer heel anders van karakter dan de eerste twee delen, en weer een uitdaging om zo goed mogelijk ingesproken te krijgen – maar erg mooi.

Zielenschemering, het derde boek uit de romancyclus De Boeken der Kleine Zielen van Louis Couperus, beschrijft een volgende periode uit het leven van de familie van Lowe. Een van de hoofdpersonen is Constance’s broer Gerrit, uiterlijk een blonde sterke bruut van een man, ritmeester bij de huzaren, maar hij voelt zichzelf van binnen vaak ziek en zwak. Broer Ernst, altijd al zonderling en op zichzelf, wordt nu gekweld door angstaanjagende hallucinaties. De familie overkomt de ene ellende na de andere. De familieleden reageren ieder op hun eigen manier.

Om te zorgen dat ik “fris” blijf, en niet zomaar het laatste deel “afraffel” ga ik nu eerst wat andere dingen inspreken. Maar ik weet al zeker: deel 4 komt er ook, en als alles mee zit gewoon nog dit jaar!

Het late leven: deel 2 van De boeken der kleine zielen

Bijna 3 jaar na deel 1, is nu deel 2 af. En ik zit er weer helemaal in. Ik heb het gemist om luisterboeken te maken! Maar mijn huis was bijna een half jaar een puinhoop door een grote verbouwing – geen plaats en geen stilte (en geen puf of rust) om in te spreken. Nog niet alles is af, maar wel mijn nieuwe studeerkamer, waar ik in mijn vrije tijd aan mijn bureau met prachtig uitzicht over de stad kan werken aan Librivox.

Ik werd er trouwens op gewezen dat dit jaar het 150ste geboortejaar is van Louis Couperus. Een extra reden om door te gaan met deel 3 – als het plezier van voorlezen van Couperus’ werk niet al voldoende was – maar ik beloof nog niets over wanneer die af zal zijn.

Het late leven’ is het tweede boek in de romancyclus ‘De boeken der kleine zielen’, en gaat verder direct na het einde van het vorige boek, ‘De kleine zielen’ (hiervan bestaat ook een librivox luisterboek).

Hoewel het draait om dezelfde personen is de inhoud en aard van dit boek heel anders dan het vorige. Zowel Henri van der Welcke als zijn vrouw Constance, gevangen in een liefdeloos huwelijk, worden verliefd – hij op zijn jonge nichtje Marianne van Naghel, zij op Brauws, een oude schoolvriend van Henri. Constance’s ziel lijkt te ontwaken in haar opkomende liefde voor Brauws, ook al vindt ze zichzelf eerst veel te oud voor zoiets, met haar 42 jaar. Om deze hoofdpersonen heen groepeert de schrijver weer de hele grote Haagse familie van ‘kleine zielen’ uit het eerste deel, wiens nietige leventjes krioelen door het boek. The Return of Alfred

Mijn volgende voltooide solo is weer een Engelstalig werk: The return of Alfred, door Herbert George Jenkins. Dit is weer een luchtige ‘romantic comedy’. Verandering van spijs doet eten, zullen we maar zeggen.

The hero of the book is at a loose end, weary and bored of his old life after returning from the Great War. After an argument with his uncle and a railway strike he finds himself lost in the county of Norfolk at ten o’clock one night. When he seeks shelter in a country home, the butler immediately recognizes him as “Mr. Alfred”, the missing son of the house. From that point onwards, our hero, who gives his name as “James Smith”, finds himself in for an exciting time.

Not only does he inherit the friends of “Mr. Alfred”, but also the odium of his misdoings. Protestations are useless: the villagers are convinced he is the prodigal son. Of course, he could just leave the village – but then, had he not been hoping for something exciting to happen – and more importantly, what about Marjorie, the girl at the window?

Originally published anonymously, this romantic comedy was just signed “by the author of “Patricia Brent, Spinster” (a book that was also published anonymously) with a dedication: “To those in many countries who have generously assumed responsibility for the authorship of Patricia Brent, Spinster – this book is dedicated by the author”.

Pauls Ontwaken

Mijn volgende solo is af. Een indrukwekkend boekje, geschreven door Frederik van Eeden, bijna 100 jaar geleden. Het thema heeft desondanks niets ouderwets: een vader beschrijft op indringende wijze het stervensproces van zijn 24-jarige zoon, en denkt na over wat ‘een goede dood’ is. Een kort project, minder dan 2 uur in totaal, en geen lichte kost, maar wel een boek om langer over na te denken.

 

In dit aangrijpende korte werk beschrijft de schrijver en psychiater Frederik van Eeden het leven en met name de dood van Paul, de jongste zoon uit zijn eerste huwelijk. Paul stierf op 24-jarige leeftijd aan tuberculose. Frederik van Eeden schreef dit werk in de 3 maanden na Pauls overlijden in 1913.
