#102: NWST ’18 Primer w/ Preston and Shawn

The North West Shred Tour is coming to NorCal beginning May 31.

NWST founder Preston Villanueva and Central California’s Shawn Oberg talk with me over Skype about what’s in store for this year. We cover the parks we’ll be skating, where we will be camping, and where to get hella wine and legal weed along the way. You know, for when you’re done driving for the day.

Check out bladeordie.com to hear the podcast from the Montana trip and other goodies we’ll be talking about on the show.

You can directly download the episode here, or stream it on iTunesStitcher, or Google Play. (Subscribe, if you feel like it.)

Here’s the episode we did of the 2016 NWST featuring interviews with Cameron Talbott, Chemi Simiyu, Kellen Zinkgraf, Preston Villanueva, Dustin Jamieson, Zach Newton, Thomas McGovern, Jon Christopherson, Aaron Powell, and more:

Here’s Christmas’ video from the 2016 NWST in Montana:

And here’s a previous episode with just Shawn Oberg:

#101: Brian Bina

Some folks you have to interview when you get the chance. Really glad to have had this one.

For lack of a better description, Brian Bina is a nomadic adventurer, back in the States on a brief hiatus from his international travels. We talk about the creation and future of Haitian Mag, growing up as a Chicago kid, and all the places he’s been in between.

You can directly download the episode here, or stream it on iTunesStitcher, or Google Play. (Subscribe, if you feel like it.)

If you want an excuse to hang out with your friends, drink beer, and bullshit, I highly recommend you start a podcast.

What some podcasters could do in a year, we did in three and a half. We — Erick Garcia, Kennan Scott, Philip Moore, and I — take the show back to its roots in Kennan’s garage. We count down the show’s most popular episodes to date, as well as discuss a potential Winterclash emcee collaboration, gophering, diaspora, getting married, making babies, and vacuum cleaners.

And we have a new theme song featuring music from our good friends Skookum.

Huge thanks to our supporters on Patreon: Trudy, Dustin, Edward, Jose, Nate, Steve, Alexander, Zach, Basti, Jon, Levi, Sean, Brad, Ivan, Randy, Jeff, Brad, Tri, Lawrence, Obe, Mark, Clay, Todd, Konjure, Ian, Guy, Ty, Trace, Kofi, Jeff, and Patrick.

#99: Derek Henderson

Fresno may be home to “hillbillies and gangsters,” but it’s also home to some serious shredding.

Derek Henderson may be Razor’s latest pro, but he’s been holding it down in California’s Central Valley for decades. We talk about S9 bearings, his true top souls, what being pro means to him, and so much more.

Follow Derek on Instagram as @s9bearings.

You can directly download the episode here, or stream it on iTunesStitcher, or Google Play. (Subscribe, if you feel like it.)

And here’s Derek’s Razor’s pro edit:

#98: Blade Havasu

Rock Town correspondent Levi Sebastian guides us through his weekend of skating and camping in “Arizona’s playground,” otherwise known as Lake Havasu.

During the last weekend in February, Blade Havasu included skaters from all over the country (but mostly Arizona). Levi brought home interviews with Andrew Scherf, Ryan Buchanan, Austin Paz, Adam Caroselli, Chad Hornish, Noah Shaw, and many others.

The cover photo comes courtesy of Austin Paz and his trusty drone.

#97: Charles Dunkle & Friends

Y’all ever wanted to hear from a ton of rollerbladers from Alabama?

While back home in Alabama for his engagement party, Phil sat down with Alabama legends Charles Dunkle, Matty Schrock, Mike Buckalew, Shane Thompson, and Malcolm Heard.

Talking around a table with some old copies of Rejects Skate Magazines, they talk Alabama skating, Roces/Valo/Them Skates, the good old days of being a pro skater.

#96: The Iowa-California Connection

Home may be where the heart is, but if it gets too cold, feel free to get out of there.

Like me, Phil Austin and Josh Goodell were Iowans who fled the state in search of warmer winters, diverse topography, and burritos. We talk about food, Iowa skating OGs, and what Phil does not want you to order online.

#95: Black Panther

Phil Moore watched Black Panther with his father in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. Brian Krans watched it in Oakland, California, which is important in the film. It’s also where both Phil and Brian live.

In this spoiler-heavy episode, Phil and Brian talk about Black Panther’s significance in modern America — and the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe — why kids need heroes that look like them, the future of Wakanda, and the racism in America.

#94: Skookum

If you haven’t heard about the band Skookum yet, we’re sorry for not doing our jobs properly.

In this episode, Phil Moore talks with the members of the all-blader band Skookum: Brian Shima, Sean Salazar, Brendan Tidd, and Pat Catilung. Follow them on Instagram @skookumtunes.

#93: Philip Moore #cohost

Hashtag-cohost was a resounding success, so now Philip Moore is officially in the Rock Town family.

In this episode, I share some of my best mistakes as a blade podcaster, who really deserves the ‘Blade Author of the Year’ award. In this and future episodes, we’ll be talking about rollerblading, race, representation, and, of course, comic book movies.

You can directly download the episode here, or on iTunesStitcher, or Google Play. (Subscribe, if you feel like it.)

Here’s Phil’s ONE Blade Mag section where that uplifting comment spawned from:
