The Samurai’s Garden — Guest Post by Author Patricia Kiyono
I’m pleased to welcome wonderful author Patricia Kiyono back to Child of Yden, as she discusses how her rich family heritage found its way into her latest release. Enjoy!
~ S.G. Rogers
Thank you so much for having me on your blog today, S.G! I’m very excited about the release of The Samurai’s Garden. In writing this, I drew on my own Japanese heritage, and I thought today I’d share a little bit about it.
Growing up, we celebrated American holidays like our friends and neighbors
did. My dad, though he was of Japanese descent, was born and raised in America, so our home looked much like everyone else’s, except for a few touches that my mom, who lived in Japan until she married her Japanese-American soldier, insisted on. In our living room, beautiful kimono-clad dolls posed in glass cases. In various places of the house, streamers of origami cranes attested to her belief in their ability to grant wishes. And occasionally, when I got home from school, I’d hear the stereo playing recordings of traditional Japanese songs.
In one corner of the living room was a small case with a picture of my deceased grandparents. It had a candle in front of it, and every day mom would put fresh water and fruit. Sometimes she would put a small bowl of rice there, too. She would bring the food and water, ring a little bell, and then bow. This was the family shrine, or obutsudan. I didn’t know much about the traditions surrounding these rituals. Maybe it’s because I didn’t ask. My brothers and I just accepted these actions as part of mom’s life.
Now that I have a home of my own, I realize these rituals were an important part of who mom is. My living room also has touches of Japan. I have a two-foot tall Japanese doll in a glass case—a wedding gift from my relatives. She stands in a place of honor, next to my piano. She’s a reminder of where I came from. This reminder was one of the reasons I needed to write a story full of the traditions and history of the land of my birth. And so The Samurai’s Garden came to be. I hope you’ll enjoy reading about them, and about the characters who bring these traditions to life.
Blurb:
Hiro Tanaka prepared for a life as a samurai warrior. But his world changed when Japan’s feudal system was abolished by the Emperor. Now, he must find a new vocation. Disillusioned with fighting and violence, he travels alone, going north to the island of Hokkaido. Many other samurai wander through the country and are known as ronin. Some have forsaken their honorable way to prey on the less fortunate.
Hanako Shimizu experienced first-hand the devastation caused by these disreputable wanderers. The previous winter, they raided her farm and killed her husband. Now, she needs to rebuild but has no money and no prospects — except for the dubious intentions of the town merchant.
When Hiro, tired of his wandering, encounters Hanako in the market, arguing with the merchant, he poses as her late husband’s cousin then offers to help her on the farm in exchange for a place to stay. Working on the land, Hiro finally finds the peace he has been seeking. But the reappearance of the rogue ronin, led by an unscrupulous leader from Hiro’s past, forces him to take up his swords again. But now, the stakes are higher.
This time, he’s fighting from the heart.

When the game is rigged, sometimes the only option left is to reset the playing field.
When a beautiful commoner enters the Tournament of Chance archery competition, her thwarted victory sparks a revolution in the oppressive kingdom of Destiny. Although Heather never believed the legends about the restoration of Ormaria, after three shape-shifting Ormarian wizards awaken from a long magical slumber, she joins their perilous quest to regain the throne. Heather battles vicious predators and angry trolls to free the wizards’ magic, but at a horrendous cost. She is unexpectedly torn from the arms of the man she loves and hurled back in time to fulfill a prophecy not yet written. The ensuing maelstrom tests Heather’s survival skills, wits, and endurance. Will she become an unwritten footnote in history, or can she trust the magic to lead her back to her one true love?

Fate Worse Than the Guillotine? Character Interview from House of Cards
Author Juli D. Revezzo has released her latest title, House of Cards, just in time for Halloween! I’ve invited Juli and her main character, Sinjon, for an interview. Enjoy!
~ S.G. Rogers
A young nobleman escapes the Reign of Terror in 18th century France to find himself dragged into an even worse fate–
a hellish underworld wherein he is cajoled and put on trial by a demon tribunal for crimes he never committed. Can he answer thwart his fate — one worse than the guillotine?
Buy links: Amazon, BN.com, Smashwords, and wherever online books are sold.
Thank you for coming to chat with us today, Sinjon. Why do you think Juli D. Revezzo choose you to represent her?
You’re most welcome, Suzanne. Thank you for having me. Why would my authoress choose me to represent her in House of Cards? Well, the Hag is quite freaky. Better to let a man deal with her, don’t you think?
Juli adds: Don’t mind him, Suzanne. He’s never heard of Women’s lib.
Tell us about yourself, Sinjon. First off, is there anything you wish Juli had kept quiet about?
I wish she hadn’t said I was the bastard son of the family.
I can see how that would be awkward. What is your birth date?
June 1773
Where do you live, and what is it about that area that drew you there?
I live in Paris. I was born there, you see, and the area remains beautiful to me. Really, what better city is there in our world?
I look forward to seeing it someday. What do you wish people to know about you?
That despite my beginnings, I strive to be better than just the unwished for son. I’d like to be a historian if I could, or visit Egypt or the Orient. I just never expected to have to leave home so soon, or in the way I did.
What music do you most enjoy?
Mozart of course, and Joseph Haydn’s “Apponyi” was wonderful.
Will we be seeing more of you or are you stepping out of the limelight?
That will depend on Juli, for now, though, I think I may deserve a little break, don’t you?
(Juli adds: I might write more about his family. I’m thinking about it)
Sinjon: Not to pry, dear lady, but what did you say? You know it’s rude to whisper in front of others, don’t you?
*Juli gives Sinjon innocent look* I didn’t say anything.
What is your perfect evening?
Reading, studying. Perhaps a night at the opera occasionally. I’m not much for the wild parties my contemporaries throw—threw, that is.
What really pushes your buttons?
The fact that my family betrayed me! I mean really, how could they? Is that any way for a family to act?
Ah, the dysfunctional family is the inspiration for much literature. What are your biggest turn-ons?
A gentleman doesn’t kiss and tell, but I have to admit, Suzanne,I have a thing for strong females, and especially blondes.
*Suzanne blushes and clears her throat*
Um…what are your biggest turn-offs?
Hags and people who have the nerve to betray me.
What is your favorite ice cream flavor, chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry?
You know, they say George Washington loved ice cream. For me, there’s a cherry flavor I tasted at a friend’s dinner party once that I’m in love with. I’m not sure the recipe survived to your time though, Suzanne, sorry.
* Suzanne sighs and consults her clipboard once more*
What is your biggest fear?
That I’ll never get out of the nightmare that Paris has become! Or the hag’s clutches.
Finally, why should the readers be interested in your story?
If they like stories of mystical intrigue, stories with heroes who use their brains to get out of sticky situations, or heroes who get the best of the things which would frighten even the staunchest person, they’ll like House of Cards.
*Juli pipes up* If you’d like to learn more about my works, you can find me online at:
My blog , Author’s Den Page, Facebook, Goodreads, Google+ , o n LibraryThing, on Shelfari, and Twitter: @julidrevezzo
Juli: Thanks for having me back again today, Suzanne!
Suzanne: Any time at all, Juli.
Sinjon: Yes, thank you, Mistress Suzanne. *Sinjon kisses Suzanne’s hand* It was a pleasure meeting you.
*Suzanne giggles and ends the interview*

YA Mythology Giveaway Hop at Child of Yden
Welcome to the YA Mythology Giveaway Hop at Child of Yden! This hop runs from Friday, October 26 to Sunday, November 4th. The winner (both USA and INT are eligible) will be announced on Monday, November 5th. Enter to win e-book versions of my two Asgard Adventure novellas, The Druid and The Accidental Immortal — both contemporary romantic fantasies based on Norse mythology.
The Druid
Kidnapped from Earth and abandoned in Asgard of Norse mythology, Dani Avery must fight to return home. When she stumbles upon a band of outlaws, Prince Rein agrees to take her to the Rainbow Bridge personally. Although Dani is attracted to the handsome elf, his only interest seems to be in separating her from the magical sword and shield at her side. In Asgard City, rules, regulations and bureaucrats stymie Dani’s quest. Increasingly frustrated and desperate, she seeks help among powerful immortals. Unfortunately, Dani becomes ensnared in a devious trap that may leave her stranded and alone in Asgard forever.
The adventure continues in The Accidental Immortal…
When the Cup of Immortality is stolen in Asgard, anger and suspicion is leveled at Dani Avery. Ordered from Asgard by Odin and –even worse– discovering Prince Rein has been betrothed to Leanna of the Faeries, Dani sets out to find the Cup and save Rein from an unwanted marriage.
Dani, Rein, and Emrys begin their desperate search for the real thief and the missing Cup. Unfortunately, the sultry and self-centered Leanna insists on tagging along, and causes them to run afoul of a ruthless crime boss who will stop at nothing to gain their silence…including kidnapping.
As the clock ticks away, Dani has to make a choice between continuing the search for the Cup or trying to find her missing friends. Will Dani unwittingly sacrifice Rein’s life in her attempt to save their relationship? Or must she deliberately sacrifice their relationship in order to save his life?

Ghostly Moments — Beware the Gnoamian Imps
In my Halloween celebration series of ‘ghostly moments,’ I next offer a ghastly moment from my young adult fantasy novel, The Last Great Wizard of Yden. May it send a chill up your spine!
~ S.G. Rogers
Excerpt:
Ylan Bay fishermen moved to lash down their vessels in the face of gathering storm clouds. The eldest one pointed at the four dark strands swirling into one large mass overhead.
“Something unnatural is astir!” he screamed.
The mass dipped down toward Ylan, as if the heavens had opened and poured out a bucket of black, clotted blood. When the leading edge swooped near the ground, villagers recognized the Imps. People shrieked and ran for cover. Puledens pulled free of their tethers and bolted in every direction.
The Imps veered away from the village at the last moment and headed out to sea. The
trailing edge of the flock split off to descend upon a lone, terrified puleden. As the Imps dipped down to feed, they lifted the beast off the ground with their ferocity. In the next instant, the puleden skeleton clattered to the street, picked clean, and the Imps sped up to catch their brethren.
For his sixteenth birthday, all Jon wanted were the keys to the family car. Instead, he got a lousy magic ring…
Artistic prodigy Jon Hansen yearns to fit in, but when he stumbles onto a supernatural kidnapping, his life changes forever. Unfortunately, his search for answers uncovers a magical secret—one that makes Jon a danger to everyone around him.
The Wolf Clan wizard Efysian has been draining the magic from Yden. On a quest for eternal power, he’s willing to kill to feed his addiction. To harness the ultimate source of energy, he travels to Earth. This time, however, he has a witness to his crime.
Can Jon survive long enough to outwit the most evil wizard the magical world has ever known? Or will Efysian add the young wizard to his gruesome collection of trophies?
The Last Great Wizard of Yden, a full length fantasy novel. E-book available now through Astraea Press, Amazon, BN.com and other fine outlets. Now available as a trade paperback too! (HERE)

Ghostly Moments — Dead as a Rhule
In celebration of the upcoming Halloween holiday, I’ll be posting a few ghostly moments — scenes from some of my titles involving ghosts, demons, or wicked creatures. Enjoy!
~ S.G. Rogers
Excerpt from Minna & The Valentine:
Upon entering the library, Minna covered her open mouth with her hands. The collection of books spread out before her was larger than any library she’d ever seen before. Sumptuous leather bindings stretched on as far as the eye could see—but the books
were not the only impressive feature. Huge paintings graced the walls, and freestanding sculptures lent the library the feel of a museum, although several reading corners allowed for a cozier experience.
“Absolutely amazing,” she said finally. “How do you find anything?”
“Can I help you, Miss?”
A ghostly figure appeared directly in front of Minna.
Startled, she reached for Evan’s hand.
“Hello, Mr. Rhule,” Evan said. “Allow me to introduce Minna Westerfield. Minna, this is our librarian, Mr. Rhule.”
“But he’s…he’s…”
“Deader than a proverbial doornail,” Mr. Rhule said. “I’m not offended by the observation, I can assure you. It comes as a shock to me daily.”
Rendered speechless, Minna stared at the elderly gentleman, clad in a suit and tie fashionable decades prior.
“Mr. Rhule was a longtime employee who decided to stay on after he died,” Evan explained. “We’d be lost without him.”
“I had no relatives I wanted to join in the hereafter, you understand,” Mr. Rhule said. “Work always was my life. It has now become my death, too.”
Minna must seal a rift in the universe before it’s too late.
Minna has a secret. Her father, ex-dragon jockey Wynn Westerfield, will forever hold a grudge against wizards. Because it was a wizard who caused his care
er-ending accident, Minna struggles to hide her incredible magical powers from him…and from the world.
Evan Valentine has attended a prestigious magical academy on scholarship, although he’s managed to conceal that fact from everyone. He’s on the fast track to success with his apprenticeship to wizard Thaddeus Bartholomew, and Evan’s carefully constructed life doesn’t include a certain beautiful girl whose powers rival his own.
Although Minna and Evan don’t realize it yet, their destinies have been intertwined for years. When a threat arises, Minna and Evan must travel to another reality to retrieve a dangerous magical artifact. Can Minna and Evan learn to work together, despite their mutual mistrust? Or will their explosive romantic attraction lead to disaster?

Like Beasts in the Field – Excerpt from TOURNAMENT OF CHANCE
Vibrating with shock, Heather stared at the ground. As Lady
Felicia was declared this year’s winner of the Tournament of Chance, the commoners began to boo. The sound began low, but built until it resembled the groan of a hurricane. To show their dissatisfaction with the decision, people threw apple cores and rocks onto the field. Pushing and fighting broke out. When a few of the men stumbled through the rope barricades, the king’s guardsmen closed ranks. Within short order, a phalanx of mounted guards joined the melee and created a buffer between the commoners and the royals. Even so, the booing grew louder.
In the meantime
, the king, queen, and other members of court rose from their seats and filed toward the castle as quickly as their dignity would allow. The queen made no effort to mask her disgust.
“Listen to those thugs! We try to be nice to the commoners, but they don’t appreciate it.”
“You don’t understand, Chelsea. Commoners lack the capacity for higher thought. It’s best to treat them like beasts in the field,” the king replied.
If she’d been slapped, Heather could not have been more wounded. Tears pricked her eyelids. The king and queen were talking about her family, her friends — and her. When the king pointed an accusatory finger in her direction, however, she preferred the insults to what came next.
“Arrest her for inciting a riot,” he told his guardsmen.
“What!” Heather gasped.
King’s guards strode over to confiscate her bow and quiver. Ustin and Obie tried to push through the crowd to come to Heather’s aid, but they were intercepted by guardsmen. Despite Joe’s protests, the guards took her into custody. As she was hauled away, Heather shook her head in disbelief. If this were a nightmare or some kind of joke, she’d long since ceased to be amused.
When a beautiful commoner enters the Tournament of Chance archery
competition, her thwarted victory sparks a revolution in the oppressive kingdom of Destiny. Will she become an unwritten footnote in history, or can she trust the magic to lead her

Element of Surprise – Excerpt from CHILDREN OF YDEN
Children of Yden is the sequel to Last Great Wizard of Yden, and it’s jam-packed with action, intrigue, and teenage angst. I don’t have an exact release date yet, but it’s in the wings. Jon and the gang are back, along with a several new fun, feisty characters and nasty bad guys. There are also delicious hints and undercurrents throughout the story that foreshadow things to come in the final book in the trilogy, Secrets of Yden. Enjoy this sneak peek, and keep your eyes peeled for the release date announcement. ~ S.G. Rogers
Blurb:
While balancing the rigorous demands of regular schoolwork, Jon eagerly begins his magical training on Dragon Isle. At the same time, the Dragon Clan starts to search for other Earth-born sons and daughters of Yden’s wizards. Using a purloined map, however, the Fox Clan has already begun recruiting the children of Yden for their own sinister plans. Jon soon discovers Guinn of the Fox Clan is searching for a magical artifact called the Portal Key — and he’s more than willing to kill for it. Worse, Guinn’s desire to settle an old score puts Jon directly in his sights. As Guinn’s schemes fall into place, Jon is forced to hurt a close friend to protect her. Can he learn enough magic in time to thwart Guinn’s ambitions? Will he find the inner strength to survive injury, bitter betrayal, and horrendous loss? The fate of Earth and Yden hangs in the balance.
Without any warning, Jon flew backward, right into a tree. He shook his head, stunned. Just when he managed to focus his eyes, the hooded wizard stepped into view.
Oh, no.
Dazed, Jon struggled to recover. Guinn’s fingers moved and Jon barely managed to deflect his binding spell. Fueled by adrenaline, Jon returned as strong a repulsion wave as he could muster. Caught by surprise, the Fox Clan wizard was blasted off his feet. Jon didn’t linger to savor the moment. He transported home.
When he materialized in his room, Jon was so amped up he couldn’t catch his breath. Pacing back and forth, he raked his wet hair off his face with his fingers.
“I just fought a powerful wizard.” He stopped pacing. “I just fought a powerful wizard — and won!”
At first he was jubilant, but as the impact of his words seared themselves into his consciousness, Jon’s mirth faded. The only reason I’m alive is my sparring drill practice and the element of surprise. Guinn didn’t think I was capable of defending myself. He won’t make the same mistake twice.
Jon paused to stare at his reflection in the mirror.
Guinn had seen his face, but Jon couldn’t identify the Fox Clan wizard except by his distinctive voice. I need to tell Dad, but how? Considering his father’s history with Guinn, Jon hesitated to talk to him about it.
“What on Yden have I done, Ophelia?”
Jon sank down on his bed and dropped his head in his hands.
Thanks for stopping by to read my excerpt! If you haven’t already read The Last Great Wizard of Yden, what are you waiting for? The e-book is available now through Astraea Press, Amazon, BN.com and other fine outlets ($2.99 MSRP). Now available as a trade paperback too! (HERE)

Writing, Bonsai Style
Come over to author Suzanne Johnson’s blog Preternatura and read my guest post about the ‘shaping’ of Tournament of Chance. Leave a comment for a chance to win an e-book copy!
Literary Bonsai – The Shaping of Tournament of Chance
When I wrote Tournament of Chance, I didn’t start out to write a speculative fiction piece. It began as a short story about a girl who enters an archery contest, hoping to win a royal title and a place at court. The narrative ended just as a revolution begins, cutting off the story right when the action was getting good. (MORE)

The Artist’s Inheritance – Character Interview
Enjoy this character interview with Caitlin, from The Artist‘s Inheritance by Juli D.
Revezzo… and if you share this post in some way (via Twitter/Facebook/G+, etc. and/or follow Juli’s blog (the link is below), you’ll be entered to win an e-book copy of The Artist’s Inheritance! Leave a comment to let us know which way you entered, and good luck. (The winner will be selected on Sunday, October 21st)
~ S.G. Rogers
Thank you for coming to chat with us today, Cait. Tell us, why should readers be interested in your story?
If they like stories with strong heroines, or stories with heroines who ultimately conquer their demons and get the best of the things that go bump in the attic, they’ll like The Artist’s Inheritance, I think.
Things that go bump in the night? So, you believe in ghosts?
Six or seven months ago I would’ve said no; now I have way too much overwhelming personal experience with them to say anything but yes. I mean, come on, how can I answer otherwise with a ghost guardian?
You sound pretty brave. What is your biggest fear?
Losing my beloved Trevor to an untimely demise. *huh* Trevor says his biggest fear is losing that damned chair of his . . . *sigh* Yes, dear. I know. (Don’t mind him. He’s been weird, recently).
Why do you think author Juli D. Revezzo choose you to represent her?
I think… if she chose me to represent her at all, and I’m not saying she did because what does that even mean? (Juli: Never mind, Caitlin. We’ll talk later and I’ll explain.
) I think if she did choose me to represent her, it’s because she was too shy—or maybe too scared—to deal with what Trevor and I have to deal with. Better to let me do it.
Tell us a little abo
ut yourself. Where do you live, and what is it about that area that drew you there?
My hubby Trevor and I live in Gulf Breeze, Florida, and what drew us here? We took the house over from his sister-in-law. Trevor couldn’t bear to let it go.
Your husband is an artist, isn’t he? Tell us more about Trevor and what drew you to him?
His smile, first and foremost. After that, it was how good he looked on his surfboard. By the time he got me to his gallery and showed me what he could do with his hands, I was gone. *ahem* You know what I mean.
What are your biggest turn ons?
Surfers, and artists.
Turn offs?
Anything imp-like, nightmares, and meddling, snarky bosses.
What music do you listen to?
Mainly rock music, of course—you know, Zeppelin, Sarah McLachlan. But my buddy Sealya’s getting me into more new agey Celtic music too. Trevor likes The Red Hot Chili Peppers and bands like that—when he listened to anything. He’s not listening to much these days, really.
Is there anything you wish Juli Revezzo had kept her mouth shut about?
I wish she hadn’t told anyone I was a witch. Or that I was reincarnated from one. Gods, how insane must that make me look?
Thanks for speaking with us today, Caitlin!
Settling into their new home in Gulf Breeze, Florida, Caitlin finds strange changes coming over her husband Trevor. He seems obsessed with a beautiful chair he’s carving.
When the nightmares deepen and ghosts begin lurking—she knows something’s not right, and not just her newfound precognitive abilities. It’s the damned chair, she’s sure. Could it be just what it seems: a mundane piece of furniture? If so, why is it attracting dark forces—the forces she suspects drove Trevor’s siblings to insanity and suicide?
Before the same happens to Trevor, Caitlin must convince him to sell his art. But armed with only a handful of allies, and little experience of the supernatural, she must proceed with caution against the hellish forces besieging her family.
If she succeeds, she will break the ancestral curse. If she fails, she may lose forever the one thing she cares about most: her beloved Trevor.
