Clash of Wills Cover Art
I just received my cover art for Clash of Wills, a romantic fantasy coming soon from The Wild Rose Press.
When an unconventional princess meets a footloose prince, a battle of wits begins…
Princess Samantha's magical compass will help her locate her long-lost brother, but only if she manages to escape her royal parents for a few weeks. When an unwelcome suitor comes to call, Samantha seizes her chance. She beguiles the prince into taking her north, intending to abandon him at her earliest opportunity. Unfortunately, his captivating good looks and charming manner present an unforeseen complication—especially when she is forced to accept help from the very man she has deceived.
To maintain his bachelorhood, handsome Prince Wills is not above deception. Although reluctantly entangled in Samantha's scheme, he vows to protect her…until a lie threatens to destroy their alliance. Can his powerful attraction to Samantha overcome his mistrust? And can they survive a dangerous quest to the wild and magical Uncharted Region?

Why Aren't You Hairy, Houdini?
Meet Houdini, one of my Sphynx cats. His mischievous, sociable nature and beautiful lines inspire my ideas of dragons. I am grateful that Houdini cannot fly or breathe fire, however, as he gets into enough trouble as it is!
The ability to see magic in what's around you is often just a matter of asking "what if?"

Inspirational Magic
My stories are often inspired by magical places. This photo is of the lagoon outside my window. Quite frequently I see alligators swimming around, looking for lunch. Often, the alligators lay on the grass surrounding the lagoon in order to sun themselves. They are fascinating to watch…from afar. I enjoy the look of the hanging moss and the texture of the tree bark. To me, it's very romantic and moody. Exotic, colorful birds also come to visit the lagoon, to nest in the trees or to fish. Inspiration can spring from many things. What inspires you?

No Rest For The Bleary
I have not fallen off the face of the Earth nor have I been sucked into another dimension (yet). I was slogging along on a manuscript when suddenly my literary soufflé collapsed. That's what happens sometimes when your hero or heroine's intentions aren't strongly enough defined. My problems might have been exacerbated by caffeine withdrawal. (Note To Self: Mainlining diet soda is not a great long-term strategy). So, after going at the story in a different way for another week or so, I realized that the manuscript and I needed a time-out.
To stay busy, I brought out a short story I'd completed and began to write 'what happens next.' That has had me consumed for the last month. I'm now on Chapter Twenty and heading into the home stretch of a novel. The story has many unexpected twists and turns because I wrote it without a blueprint. Writing by the seat of your pants can be rewarding, but slow because you have to sort of test various scenarios to see what works. The genre is also slightly different than what I'm used to, since it's more of a 'sword & sorcery' tale. I'm hoping to finish the rough draft by next week. I'll polish her up, give her a pat on the back and send her out the door mid-September.
Then I'll get back to the first manuscript. The 'time-out' was worthwhile. I already have some ideas on how to make it work…
