Falling in Public

Chapter 24
Eddie paced in the living room, wondering how Vince could be so calm. It was nearly noon, and there was no sign of Holly at all - even her agent hadn't heard from her. He'd slept fitfully after Vince had finally rescued him from Holly's dressing room at the studio and he'd given a statement to the police. The guilt was almost overwhelming, though he knew there was nothing he could have done differently.
Except sending her away yesterday morning.
"There has to be something we can do," he said, stopping in front of the tall glass windows that overlooked the pool. "Maybe we should hire a private detective. Do you know any--"
"The police said they'd call as soon as they had something," Vince said. "You've got to calm down, Eddie. You have a show in two days - you should be rehearsing with the rest of the band."
Eddie turned around in time to see Vince point the remote at the TV. The noon news came on, and he froze as Holly's face appeared in the small box to the left of the newscaster.
"Turn it up," he said, snatching the remote from Vince's hand and raising the volume as fast as he could. Her face was as white as the sheet pulled up over her t-shirt, and the resigned weariness in her eyes made him long to hold her. The newscaster was talking, and he tried to focus on her words.
"--for more on this story, let's go right to our field correspondent live with Ms. Saunders at this very moment."
Holly's face grew larger for a moment until the camera panned out to include the face of a young reporter, leaning far closer than he needed to, in Eddie's opinion.
"Ms. Saunders, please tell our audience what happened yesterday, and where you've been since then." The camera zoomed in on Holly again. She blinked and looked offscreen for a moment before she spoke.
"Some men tried to kidnap me. I was shot in the leg, but I'm being well cared for by..." she paused, glanced offscreen again and then sighed, "by Sean Winston and his staff. Sean and I are...um..."
"It's okay Ms. Saunders," the reporter said with a sly grin. "We all got the press release this morning." He turned and looked into the camera. "Ms. Saunders and Sean Winston have been hiding a secret love affair, it seems. And as soon as she's well enough, she'll move into Winston's mansion." He looked back at Holly. "Should we be looking for a wedding date soon?"
The horrified look on Holly's face was all Eddie needed to know. He turned off the television and tossed the remote onto the coffee table. "None of that is true, dammit. Did you see her face? Something's wrong, Vince - and I'm not going to just sit back and let it happen. Winston's going down." He moved toward the door, but Vince was there first, and grabbed his arms tight.
"Nothing is exactly what you're going to do," he said, holding up a finger when Eddie opened his mouth to argue. "You go racing over there now, your career is over, I guarantee it. This has to be handled very carefully. Understood?"
"Who the hell cares about my career?" Eddie pushed his agent aside, striding quickly to the back door. "I need to see her." He pulled open the door and got half-way down the steps before his phone rang. Not looking at the display, he answered it on the way to the car, stopping short when he heard the familiar voice.
"Eddie? This is Holly."

Writing Notes: When Priorities Go AWOL
This is less of a craft post than normal – sorry. Not much writing going on here this week…
I'm sort of spinning in a giant whirlpool of chaos this week. And I have been for the last several weeks…not really due to any one specific thing, but it's just the way things shook out this fall.
Those who know me also know that I hate chaos. I don't "do" it well. You would think that as organized as I am, I could weather just about anything, but in truth, the organization just keeps me from going completely insane while I watch the things I *want* to do get usurped by the things I *need* to do. It makes me crabby. And that makes me anti-social (moreso than my normal introverted self, even).
What affects me the most is knowing that I've let people down. Even the two or three people who read my serial novels, which I've been unable to get to so far this week (though with any luck, I'll be caught up tonight). It's one thing for me to miss my personal goals – I do that consistently enough that it's not a big deal. But to miss a public deadline is a pretty major screw-up to my mind (even if it isn't to others), and while I could change my attitude towards that, I won't. Honestly, I think it's good to feel bad about missing a deadline that affects others. It's called work ethic, and that's what pushes us to do a good job and get things done in a timely manner.
In any case, I've been thinking a lot about priorities, and examining the choices I made this week with regards to what I've accomplished, and what's gotten pushed back. In hindsight, would I do it differently? Would I make different choices in favor of getting my serial scenes done on time and spending more time writing?
For the most part, no. I think I made choices that affected the least amount of people negatively, and no irreparable harm was done. That doesn't mean I feel good about it, but I feel like it was the best path to take. I also feel like I need to shuffle some things in the coming months to ensure that I have the ability to keep my writing a priority next time this sort of chaotic wind blows. Because we all know it will, right?
I always said I'd never be one of those workaholics who spent long hours at their job, at the expense of my personal life. And I'm not, but I have to say – writing/publishing is a job I could easily fall into that with, just because I love it so much. Right now, having to run my writing/publishing business alongside a full-time day job is pushing at those boundaries, and I need to keep that in perspective as well.
Things are calming down now, and with the exception of a day here and there, they should remain that way for the next several months. I'll be catching up and re-prioritizing, and my stories will go back to where they belong – near the top of my priority list.
What's at the top of your priorities list? What should be there?

Weekly News & Goals 10/31/11
Happy Halloween! If I were more of a "take pictures of everything" sort, you'd have a photo of our graveyard here now. Since I'm more of a "buy postcards while sight-seeing to avoid carrying a camera" sort, I'm afraid you're out of luck. But if you want to see pics from our annual Halloween bash on the 22nd, head on over to our Scaryview Cemetery blog. One of our party guests was kind enough to get some really fabulous photos for us.
Tonight, the graveyard comes alive with a couple fog machines, animated props, lights, music, and of course the requisite candy. Sadly, I don't think the weather plans on cooperating, but we'll have a good time anyways.
Normally after the trick-or-treaters are all gone, I'd be settling in with my laptop anxiously waiting for the clock to strike midnight so I could embark on the great month-long journey known as NaNoWriMo. I'll admit that *not* doing that this year has me a little weirded out. Alas, the final stage of the "new carpet project" happens tomorrow, so I'll be moving most of our bedroom furniture to the living room instead. Good times.
It's the beginning of a new month, and thus time for newsletters – if you aren't signed up, add your email to the list now for Variety News and the Brazen Snake Monthly. Both are short, sweet, to the point, and include a nice subscriber-only coupon every month. A great way to keep up if you aren't a regular blog reader!
As for the blog(s)? Business as usual this week.

Goal Reports
Last week wasn't too bad as far as productivity goes. I wrote all my serial scenes (some early, even), and my Rattles flash piece, but I didn't manage to finish the Attic Toys story. Not sure if I'll make the deadline on that or not – I have a ton of stuff to do today, and I'm not sure I'll have the time. Ironically, I saw the perfect artwork for it on FB last night. Crazy and kinda fun, considering the rather bizarre subject matter…
The business goals didn't fare as well – I got the important stuff done but that's about it. I really, really need a few days to catch up on the record-keeping side of things. Here's hoping I can get that done very soon. The personal goals fared far better, and most of those are done (or nearly done). Still have some party clean-up to do, and I'll be spending most nights this week putting Halloween to bed. But if I do a little every night, I should be able to find bookkeeping time this weekend.
Goals for the Week
Writing
5 serial scenesFinish the Attic Toys sub (hopefully!)Business
Read/respond to all final Rattles submissionsPost new Rattles promptSpend a few hours on bookkeepingUpdate back matter on a few ebook titlesFormat and upload Nov. Chapter 23
Holly nibbled at her bottom lip. There wasn't a choice, really - not right now at least. She couldn't just let them blow Eddie up, and there was no way to know if Ellison was bluffing or not.
Considering she'd been shot in the leg by real bullets, she wasn't willing to risk Eddie's life on the gamble. But once her leg healed, and she had some freedom back...
"I won't sleep with him," she said, needing to make that clear up front. "And I want to know exactly what kind of affectionate displays you expect from me right from the start. I don't suppose you'd be willing to draw up a contract?"
Ellison laughed. "So you could sue us later?" He shook his head. "Smart girl, but no. Our deal is strictly under the table, and you will do whatever you need to in order to make your relationship with Sean look convincing. Or else." He got his phone from his pocket and stared at the screen for a moment, then tapped out a message.
"That was our PR girl. She has the press release ready and I don't think we can wait much longer." He shot her a pointed look. "So what's it going to be, Ms. Saunders? The old boyfriend or a shiny new one?"
"What press release?" Holly frowned. "I'll agree to your plan, Ellison, but only because you leave me no choice. What makes you think I won't run off the first chance I get though?"
He smiled. "Well, there's Steve, for one thing. Your bodyguard will be with you night and day, to insure your...continued cooperation. And if you're gone for more than four hours at any one time, we'll detonate the bomb. So it really is in your best interests to play by our rules." He tapped at his phone again, the put it back in his pocket. "The press release will go out to all media outlets immediately to let the police know you are no longer missing, but that you've been injured in a car accident and are currently under the care of your secret lover, Sean Winston. As soon as you're able, we'll need to hold a Q and A session for you and Sean to go public with the romantic story of how he stole you from Pierce."
The man looked almost giddy, and Holly fought the urge to roll her eyes. There was something else going on here, she'd swear to it. No way could a mere rivalry between stars make that big of an impact on sales. She'd get to the bottom of it before she left, no matter what. Sean Winston and all of his cohorts could just go to hell for all she cared. And she'd be happy to send them there.
There was another knock at the door, and Ellison opened it. Three people came in carrying photography equipment, and started setting up around her bed. Pulling the covers up higher, Holly glared at Ellison.
"What the hell is all this?"

Writing Notes: No NaNoWriMo for Me...
...but not for lack of desire. On the
contrary, after writing at least part of a novel every November for
the last seven years with a bunch of other people all doing the same
thing, believe me, I've twisted my schedule every which way trying
to figure out how to make it work this year. Much like everything
else in life, it's about choices and priorities. Sometimes those
are the hardest choices to make.
Writers who have never participated in
NaNo won't understand what a big deal it is for me to give this up.
NaNo is more than just a writing exercise. It's this amazing,
indescribable community that gives off an energy unmatched by
anything else, where writers all over the world reach for a common
goal together. And unlike a marathon, there's never just one
winner. Everyone has the chance to experience the thrilling high of
finishing 50,000 words in 30 days amidst one of the busiest months of
the year. That's the whole point, of course – learning that no
matter how busy you are, you can still make time to write if you want
it badly enough. That, and learning that you can finish an
entire story.
Sure, there are plenty of people who
modify NaNo to suit their own goals, but I'm a purist. It just
wouldn't be NaNo for me if I were to do anything but try to write a
50k novel from word one on Nov. 1 and ending on Nov. 30th.
That's what I've done for 7 years, and it just wouldn't feel
right to do it differently now. Will I write 50k words in November?
Probably not...my comfortable writing speed is around half of that,
so I normally write around 20-25k per month (and will do that in
November too). And therein lies the rub. In order to do NaNo, I'd
have to put all of my other writing projects on hold for the month,
and focus on just that one story. I'd also have to put a lot of my
business projects on hold because I'd need that extra time to
double my writing output.
Could I do all of that? Sure.
The thing is, my writing career is off
to a good (if somewhat slow) start. I could set that all aside to
write one novel in November (and I'm a better writer now, so I
could conceivably write something near publishable). Or, I could
stick to my current schedule and end the month with:
1 romantic suspense novel revised
and ready for the editor
1 thriller novella edited and
ready for publication in December
1 erotica short/novelette complete
& published
1 erotica short/novelette started
(possibly completed)
1 erotica anthology ready for
publication in December (possibly 2)
2 romantic suspense drafts half
done
1 thriller draft 1/3 done
1 new flash piece published (along
with several other authors)
1 new flash piece written &
another anthology set up for publication in Dec.
So...1 NaNo draft ready for editing vs.
5 stories either publishable or ready for editing, plus good forward
progress on several more.
For me, the choice is clear. If I want
to write full-time someday (and I do), I need to keep moving forward.
I have a bunch of business stuff to attend on the publishing side as
well, and I think letting all that slide would be a huge tactical
error on my part.
Will I ever do NaNo again? It probably
depends on where the writing wind takes me, to be honest. But I owe
Chris Baty (who, ironically retired from his head position with NaNo
this year) and his cohorts a huge thank-you for teaching me how to
finish a novel, and everyone I met on the forums there for helping me
get better every single year by making it this fun, not-too-serious
thing that didn't have to be perfect or even make sense. Most of my
NaNo novels are "trunk novels" (several of them incomplete), but
I learned so much writing those pages that even the worst ones are
invaluable to me.
So to those of you about to embark on
this most excellent adventure, I salute you, and I'll be cheering
you on from the sidelines. Whatever you do, don't forget to add the
Traveling Shovel of Death (visit the forums if you have no idea what
I'm talking about). Even if it has nothing to do with your story.
Because it's fun.

Weekly News & Goals 10/24/11
Thanks to all for being patient while I
disappeared last week with the whole carpet/entertainment
center/party prep chaos. It was an insane six days, and Sunday we
crashed hard, barely mustering the energy to get food and clean up
the party leftovers that might start stinking if we didn't. My
least favorite part of the whole week was having to admit defeat, and
give up writing for the duration. A writer used to writing daily who
is suddenly forced to quit for a few days is a pretty unhappy writer.
Or maybe it's just me. But writing is cathartic for me – and one
of my favorite things to do, so it made me pretty crabby to have to
give it up. Thankfully, this week it's back to the regular schedule
for the most part, so back to the writing as of tomorrow night.
Naturally, I'm back to blogging this
week too, which I also missed more than I probably should have. What
can I say? I've been blogging a long, long time (long before I
thought I'd publish books), so it's a pretty deeply ingrained
habit now.

If you haven't checked out In a Dark Place, the first Rattles Flash Fiction anthology, what are
you waiting for? It's just .99 cents for the introductory price,
available pretty much everywhere, and includes my flash piece, Dark Therapy
along with five other flash fiction stories by other talented
authors. Flash fiction, for those who don't know, is fiction 1000
words or less. These stories are all right around 1k words (about 4
pages each). So perfect for reading in smaller snippets of time.
Today I'm finally (after a 2 week
delay) getting our new carpet put in. We've spent the last 24 hours
moving everything out of the dining room, living room, hall and
bedroom, and considering the state of our belongings, the dogs and
the two of us are quite adrift at the moment. I can't tell you how
ready I am to put everything back together and get back to normal (or
relatively normal, considering all the decorating ahead of us).
In any case, blogging is going to be
hit and miss this week. Sorry about that, but with the party stuff, I
have no idea how much time I'll be able to spend writing (or how
much brain space I'll have left when I find some), and the drafts
need to come before anything else (because the stories must go on).
So I'll do my best, but if I miss a non-fic post here and there,
you'll know that's why. Next week everything will be back to
normal again.

Goal Reports
Last week I did well keeping up with my
serial fiction, and I did start a new flash piece, but not the one I
was supposed to. Evil Jester Press has an open call right now for
their Attic Toys anthology (horror/black humor), and I thought it would be fun to
sub something to that...mainly because I love the whole theme and the
cover art is awesome. So that's over half-done, and I haven't started my Rattles piece yet. There's still time for that though,
I'll get it done.
Obviously the anthology from my own
press is done and out, so that's fabulous. I'm very happy with
how it turned out, and I'm looking forward to putting the next one
together. I've got a couple subs to go through, so a good start on
that. I got about half my business goals done, and the personal
ones...well, everything is chaos with this whole carpet thing, so
it's hit and miss.
Minimal goals this week due to major
last minute party prep...
Goals for the Week
Writing
5 serial scenes
Work on a flash fic story
Business
Read & respond to all Rattles
subs
Promo for various books
Personal
Put living room back together
Finish decorating inside/out
All other party prep
Make sure costume is on at least 1
hour before party
Throw a great bash
Take pictures and post them
Relax on Sunday.
If I get all that done, I'll declare
this week a success.
Wishing you all a happy and productive
week as well...

Chapter 22
Holly stared back at Ellison, careful to keep her expression neutral. Inside she was more than a little afraid of what he would say, and the muscles in her leg were twitching uncomfortably as the pain started to flare. There had to be some way to get out of this mess, she just had to listen, and then figure it out. She could do that. Then she'd get back to Eddie, and--
"I take it from your silence that you're ready to see this," he said finally, apparently realizing he'd get no acknowledgement from her. He pulled open the nightstand drawer and took out a remote control, pointing it at the bare dresser on the wall across from her bed. A mechanic whirring sound accompanied a small TV that rose out of the console. The monitor came to life with the press of another button, and Holly gasped, recognizing Harley's personal recording studio on the screen.
"How did you get this?" she asked, leaning forward to look more closely at the video. "Did you tap into his survellienc feed? Who helped you?" The old couch called to her, and she wished she could be on the other side of the glass.
"How is unimportant," Ellison said. "You should be more concerned with the next little bit." The bouncer from the AfterGlow stepped into the studio and went to the couch, lifting up one of the cushions to place something underneath the back portion of the furniture. He pushed a few buttons on the device, then replaced the cushions, staring at them for a few minutes before he turned and walked away.
The TV went black and began its decent back into the console. Ellison replaced the remote, then turned to Holly with a grin.
"I find that when the motivation is sufficient, people are more willing to listen. Are you willing to listen now, Miss Saunders?"
She nodded, knowing it was probably a bluff, but not willing to risk the potential explosion. "I'm listening."
He smiled. "Excellent. The terms are simple. You will play the part of Sean's lovely yet quiet writer-girlfriend in public. This includes enough affectionate displays to be convincing even to the press. We will provide the back story for your relationship, a room in Sean's home where you'll stay, and more spending money than you've probably ever had in your life." He clasped his hands together, the rubbing motion reminding Holly of an overly-dramatic cartoon villain in a movie. "When you aren't working," he continued, "You'll be able to work on your books in peace."
"And I why would I do this for you again? Because frankly, that sounds horrifying. You want me to be a slave, more or less. Or at least look like a mistress."
"Exactly!" He got to his feet and started pacing, back and forth behind the chair he'd vacated. "We want you to look like a mistress. And if you happen to sleep with Sean, so much the better. Your name linked with his will send your books soaring into the sales stratosphere. And having "stolen" you from Eddie Pierce will boost his credentials as well."
Holly wrinkled her nose. "That's one of the worst marketing plans I've ever heard - and I've heard many. But you didn't say why I'd want to do this. I can sell plenty of books just off my name alone."
Ellison laughed. "That's cute, honey, but you and I both know that your numbers haven't been all that great lately. You do this though, and not only will your books sell, I'll guarantee you a movie deal before our arrangement ends.
She waited, staring pointedly until the amusement left his face.
"The bomb hidden in Eddie's couch is still there. All I have to do is watch the monitor, and choose the right time for your rock star to have a rather untimely accident. Or you can play along, and stay away from Eddie Pierce, and he'll get to stay in one piece. Your choice, Ms. Saunders."

Writing Notes: Runaway Clues
I was going to discuss inertia in storytelling today, but one of my serial drafts (The Minister's Maid) is in danger of tying me up in knots trying to keep track of the minutiae of writing a sort of mystery/scavenger hunt, and I thought perhaps if I discussed that instead, I'd figure out some way to corral my clues. Or rather, I'd beat myself into submission with regards to actually making notes about this story – something I don't normally do while writing, but really should, especially in this case.
I didn't plan to write a scavenger hunt – it just sort of happened (having planned a few in real life, I wouldn't intentionally do that to my writerly self, really). Such is the curse/blessing of a pantser – the characters pretty much tell me what to write, rather than me telling them what's going on. In any case, now I'm stuck with this scavenger/treasure hunt with clues, a map and directions that must be followed. Not being a planner, I still have no idea what any of the clues beyond the second one say, nor where the map actually leads.
You have to live dangerously to write without a plan…
This, however, is a little too dangerous (not to mention inefficient) even for me. The likelihood I'll get some detail wrong, or screw up the directions is quite high, and the fact that I've had to go back through the draft twice now to remind myself of the first clues mentioned (thank goodness for yWriter and well-named scenes) tells me this draft is going to be a huge mess if I don't get a handle on the map/clues right now. And just going back through scenes to remind myself what I've already written, where they've been and where the next logical place for them to go would be is a huge waste of time – if I have all that written out in…say…a "notes" file, I can quickly refer to it and keep on typing away at the story.
I think sometime this week I really need to sit down with a map of the ranch, and the clues I've already doled out, and really think this whole treasure hunt thing through. As much as I hate knowing what happens next, there's plenty going on in this story to keep me engaged throughout, and knowing the treasure hunt route will be a huge help when I'm drafting each weekly scene.
If you're a writer and a pantser, what sorts of things will cause you to plan when you normally wouldn't?
If you're a reader – what's the last book you found with a rather startling continuity error in it?

Weekly News & Goals 10/10/11
Where to start? Well, let's see. I'm
off from the day job today thanks to Columbus Day, so that's very
handy. It's less than two full weeks to our annual Halloween party,
and the schedule is tighter than a whalebone corset, so if you don't
see me around online as much, that's why. Posts might be late (or I
may miss a few, though I will do my darnedest not to miss the serial
story chapters), but in a couple of weeks, it will all go back to
normal.
As for the blog, the people who
answered my little impromptu survey last week seemed to appreciate
the schedule and goals, so we'll keep those on Mondays. One person
said the multi-media stuff was fun and she'd like to see more, and
I've heard that via other venues as well. So after all this holiday
hoopla dies down, I'll be doing more with that again too. It will
be fun – I'm looking forward to it.
For now, we'll just keep things as
they are.
For those of you reading the erotica
shorts, The Pile Driver is available now. Here's the announcement at TrinityMarlow.com.
And the first Rattles flash fiction
anthology, In a Dark Place, will
be available this week from e-tailers everywhere, so watch for that.
It's a great collection of flash fiction, if I do say so myself,
and the October prompt is up at the Rattles sight – writers, we'd
love to see your submissions (and yes, it is a paying market)!
