Accept Them as They Are
Who are you resisting?
The Practice:
Accept them as they are.
Why?
I admit it: whether close to home or far away, I wish some people were different. Depending on who they are, I wish they’d stop doing things like leaving cabinet doors open in our kitchen, sending me spam emails, or turning a blind eye to global warming. And I wish they’d start doing things like being friendlier toward me or spending more money on public education. Even if it doesn’t affect me directly, for their own sake I do ...

Being Well Podcast: Staying Sane During Hard Times
It’s one thing to use some of the tools that we talk about on this podcast when things feel stable and are going “good enough.” It’s another to apply them when the world feels threatening. Today Forrest and I discuss ‘equanimity,’ which is what allows us to maintain our composure, presence of mind, and perhaps even wellbeing under challenging circumstances.

Drop The Case
Who are you prosecuting?
The Practice:
Drop the case.
Why?
Lately I’ve been thinking about a kind of “case” that’s been running in my mind about someone in my extended family. The case is a combination of feeling hurt and mistreated, critique of the other person, irritation with others who haven’t supported me, views about what should happen that hasn’t, and implicit taking-things-personally.
In other words, the usual mess.
It’s not that I have not been mistreated – actually, I have been – nor ...

I usually feel like there are more things that I want to do than I can reasonably accomplish in a day. I want to do my normal work-related tasks, but I’d also love to branch out and try new projects like starting another podcast, or a youtube channel, or writing a book. And then I’d love to learn some new skills, and have some fun along the way. But it’s hard to find the time, and it’s easy for...

Transform Ill Will
Do you bear a grudge?
The Practice:
Transform Ill Will.
Why?
Goodwill and ill will are about intention: the will is for good or ill. These intentions are expressed through action and inaction, word and deed, and-especially-thoughts. How do you feel when you sense another person taking potshots at you in her mind? What does it feel like to take potshots of your own? Ill will plays a lot of mini-movies in the simulator, those little grumbling stories about other people. Remember: while the movie ...
