carrion
Bedside or roadside, life ebbs then subsides
Bleeding from inside, drivers all just pass by
Yesterday or previous, part of some great ‘what was’
Vultures circle up above, ashes to ashes then dust
Newborn to carrion, I mourn while I tarry some
While life ends and new pretends, I will carry on.

dawn of night
Look both ways before you cross the street
Don’t drop your left and move your feet
Mind your elders, your ma’ams and sirs
Always fear God, nice guys finish first
Study real hard and get a good education
And a good job follows with benefits and vacation
Never be a follower, carve your own path
Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath
“Another chance to get it right”
Is the promise of dawn, proceeding night
Love without abandon even when it seems stray
And no matter what happens, “love will find a way.”
Be still my heart, bleed not my wounds
Someone lied to me, I found out too soon.
She looked both ways and still she died
I never dropped my left, he bruised my side
I honored my mother and loved God proud
Yet heartbreak and abandon scream so loud
I studied real hard, was at the top of my class
Yet 15 annuals later I’m still busting my (m)ass
I took a stand and still I stand all alone
And she fell asleep to attempts at reconcile over the phone
I rise to the promise that things will change
I fall to the reality that its just another name
I loved with sacrifice and action and openness and sonnets
Yet the only road revealed was one of broken promises.
Be still my pulse, blind not my sight
Maybe I misunderstood… and dawn is really night.

the ‘end’ word
The end. Finis. Caput. Happily ever after. I finally finished the second draft of my second novel. And by second draft, I mean first draft written a second time from a completely different perspective. A rewrite. One novel born of two.
I’m never doing that again. Well. Until I do that again.
Ever since I decided to self-publish this novel, I made the decision to be transparent during the process. I surmise that this will help others and it will make me more accountable to keep moving forward despite discouragements and setbacks that may come. I will be chronicling my progress and sharing it exclusively via Twitter with the hash tag of #felonamabel. Follow me to see some amazing things happen and why I’ve been tagged as a Renaissance man.

be more awesome
I think we all need a pep talk.
“What if Michael Jordan had quit when he was in high school? He would’ve never made Space Jam. And I love Space Jam.”
This is life, people. What will be your Space Jam? This is life, people. Be inspired. And inspiring.

I remember 19
Okay, actually, I don’t remember 19. And I definitely wasn’t wearing it as cool as this guy. How significant this day is since he was born on the 19th day and today he’s 19.
Happy birthday to my firstborn, namesake and second coming, Kenneth Christopher Bivins II. I love you and am quite proud of you.

colic
Abundance brings me thankfulness
While famine brings me shame
Or abundance makes me forget that
I ever called on God by name.
Three months old in a haystack
Hope for more than just a hunch
The proof is in the pudding
While the pudding is in my lunch.
Jesus makes me happy
Mohammad makes me think
Agnostics keep me searching
While death just makes me stink.
Inconsolable at the outcome
What a reflection can become
Stress, duress, and excess
In remembrance of a son?
Affluent ever reaching
“Infant weeps” for no cause
Maybe something’s in his eggnog
And lactose has given him pause.

on the 30th of movember
30 days of no shaving in the name of raising funds for Movember have almost passed. Thank you to all of those who have supported my hair growing efforts thus far. It’s not too late to donate as little as $1.

pious
My name is Kenn Bivins and if you’d like to try something NEW and exciting, my first novel, Pious, is for you. But be warned – it’s explosive – a perilous package that, if opened, seems innocuous at first. An assuring caress is, without warning, followed by a concussive punch.
Carpious Mightson is an esteemed and respected man in his community who is confronted with a desperate secret about his past when a registered sex-offender moves into his neighborhood.
Pious promises to be an addictive tale that is full of twists and turns, with a cinematic telling. It’s currently available at Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com and PiousBook.com. Get ready to be drawn in, intrigued and then left smoldering with introspection long after the final chapter has been read.
