Odd (Wo)Man Out
I bet you thought this would be a blog post about me being just plain odd, huh? Well, you wouldn’t be completely wrong about that. It’s the topic of just about every blog post I write and a fact that Lisa is well acquainted with. This post is more about fitting in to an anthology project when you write something a little different.
My friend Ginny Glass first proposed the idea of the Love Letters series last January with the idea that a group of authors would write a series of novella with topics drawn from the alphabet. She asked that prospective authors send them a synopsis of their first story and a couple sample pages. She then had the pleasure of reading through them all and trying to figure out who might fit together for the project.
The story I proposed (and the one included in Obeying Desire) was a lesbian erotic romance. I wasn’t sure how that might fit in, but I went for it anyway. Lucky for me, Ginny liked it. As we got further along in the process, I started to worry more and more that my one lesbian story might not work well with the three others (which all feature heterosexual couples). When we went out on submission, I feared that a publisher might want the other three—if my co-authors were willing to get rid of the odd duck (me!).
Well, thankfully that didn’t happen. I’ve changed my thinking a bit since then. When we were reading each other’s stories, one of the women (I won’t tell you which one) told me it was the first lesbian story they’d ever read. She also said she liked it. I know lesbian romances haven’t gotten nearly as much attention as gay or hetero stories. As a straight woman, I was surprised the first time I read and enjoyed one. Even more surprising was when I first started writing them.
So, take a chance on the odd girl out. If you hate it, there are three absolutely fantastic stories in this volume that feature hot heroes. Seriously, there are some amazing men in this volume, but I hope you won’t miss them in my one story.
