81 Rally

In Greenfield on June 23, a women's rights rally was moved indoors due to the heatwave. Seventy-one people were there. “Here in Franklin county in the past year (a local nonprofit) served 1,933 women survivors of mainly male sexual and physical violence,” Pat Hynes said in her speech at the rally. Workers Unite

About 40 workers voted to form a union in Monson, Massachusetts. Monson is 10 miles from downtown Springfield. The workers work at Holistic Industries, a Washington, DC-based cannabis company. They are now negotiating their first union contract. “We will absolutely get a contract signed but it will be a long fight,” Jodi Madore told the Valley Post in a voice phone interview on June 27. She has worked at Holistic in Monson for three years. Madore grew up near Worcester, Massachusetts.

200 Acres of Farmland Saved

A land trust has saved 200 acres of farmland in Deerfield, Massachusetts. Deerfield borders Greenfield. The USA is losing 6,000 acres of open space to development every DAY. In a June 16 email to the Valley Post, a spokesperson for Franklin Land Trust confirmed the deal.

When N.L. Dennis was singing in a recording studio with Toots and the Maytals, Bob Marley stopped by to listen. Marley praised Dennis's delivery. Today, Dennis lives in his native Jamaica and joins hundreds of Jamaicans who come to Vermont every summer in search of better paying work. Most of them work on vegetable farms and at apple orchards. Rally for Farmworker Rights

On June 10, billionaire Bill Gates told the New York Times he is building a nuclear power plant in Wyoming. In 2014, the Vermont Yankee nuclear reactor closed permanently because thousands of people marched in Brattleboro, and because hundreds of people were arrested for nonviolent civil disobedience in Brattleboro and outside the reactor three miles from Massachusetts and a stone's throw from New Hampshire. Deb Katz was one of the main organizers of these protests.

Protest Works

In a victory for education and workers' rights, protesters in Northampton got some of what they wanted when the mayor announced more school funding on June 5. As of June 7, the city council had not yet posted on its web site the minutes of its June 6 meeting. The council was to have voted on the mayor's plan at the meeting.

About 100 people rallied against proposed budget cuts at Northampton public schools, Scott McLennan told the Valley Post. He works for the teachers' union. The union has a ...

Vacant Home Depot May Become Apartments, Farmland

The Amherst Young Feminist Party organized a walkout and rally with about 200 students from Amherst middle and high school on May 24, according to the group's facebook page.
