Not dead yet
It's been a long time! Mea culpa. I've been squirreled away writing, among other things.
Writing updates:
STARGATE ATLANTIS: UNASCENDED is through edits at Fandemonium and out for MGM review. We're crossing our fingers for a mid-summer release date there.
The sequel to DEATH BY SILVER has had a change of title: it's now DEATH AT THE DIOYNYSUS CLUB, forthcoming from Lethe Press, although we don't yet have a release date.
And my short story "Chosen Ones" just sold to SWORD AND SORCERESS 29, which will be out this fall.
I'm currently working on a fantasy novel involving pirates and magic, and planning another SG-1 novel, tentatively titled STARGATE SG-1: MURDER AT THE SGC, in which the season 10 team gets to play detective to solve a mystifying crime.
Travel:
I'll be attending Shore Leave 36 in Maryland August 1-3. Stargate guests include Richard Dean Anderson and Teryl Rothery, and it should be a fun weekend!

Unascended
In answer to the question "will Unascended make sense if you haven't read Inheritors?":
We'll try to make it as accessible as possible. We're thinking of this as if it were the start to a new season, not a direct continuation of the previous book's plot. There's a new problem in Unascended (and its sequel), and some returning allies and antagonists who we didn't get a chance to see in Legacy -- for one thing, we'll see the return of the Travelers (we originally wanted to feature them in Legacy, but there just didn't end up being room.)
There'll be a "previously on Stargate Atlantis" introduction to sum up what happened in the Legacy series, and we'll try to briefly recap plot points that are critical to understanding what's going on as they come up. That said, if you haven't read the Legacy books, you're going to have to roll with a lot of things -- Atlantis is back in the Pegasus galaxy, there are some new characters who will be returning, and everyone from the Wraith to the Satedans are dealing with the aftermath of the end of Inheritors.
You won't be able to read Unascended without being thoroughly spoiled for that ending. (Spoiled considerably beyond the fact that our heroes win, which I don't really consider a spoiler -- "the Wraith eat everyone, the end" was never an ending MGM was going to sign off on. But there were a lot of other ways things could have played out.) So I would recommend finishing Inheritors first!

Not dead yet
I've spent all summer essentially under a rock for work reasons -- a ton of travel -- and part of the fall digging out from under all the work and writing that needed to be done when I got back, but I'm feeling more human now, and looking forward to various things moving forward.
First, MGM has green-lighted Unascended, the next Stargate: Legacy book! I'm looking forward to returning to the Stargate universe, and in particular to the return of Elizabeth Weir -- but like most things in the Pegasus Galaxy, her return won't be easy or free of consequences. This is currently planned as the first book in a two-book series, with the first book out sometime in 2014.
Melissa and I have been working on a sequel to Death by Silver, and we're in the process of revising the first draft. Possibly my favorite line so far, from the inimitable Miss Frost:
"If the dead bodies haven't driven me away, Mr. Mathey, I think our professional relations can survive admitting that we both know how the human race perpetuates itself."
And there are various other projects in the works, so I'll keep you posted!

Death by Silver shipping from Amazon!
Death by Silver is now on sale and shipping from Amazon! This is the hard copy only, Amazon US only -- I'll let you know when ebooks, etc., are available. It's exciting to have it making its way out into the world!
His practice newly established, metaphysician Ned Mathey can't afford to turn away any clients. But the latest Londoner to seek Ned's magical aid gives him pause: Mr Edgar Nevett, an arrogant banker, is the father of the bully who made Ned's life hell at boarding school. Nevertheless, Ned accepts the commission to ensure the Nevett family silver bears no ancient or modern curses, and then prepares to banish the Nevett family to unpleasant memory again. Until Edgar Nevett is killed by an enchanted silver candlestick-one of the pieces Ned declared magically harmless. Calling on his old school friend Julian Lynes--private detective and another victim of the younger Nevett--Ned races to solve the murder, clear the stain on his professional reputation, and lay to rest the ghosts of his past. Assisted by Ned's able secretary Miss Frost, who has unexpected metaphysical skills of her own, Ned and Julian explore London's criminal underworld and sodomitical demimonde, uncover secrets and scandals, confront the unexpected murderer and the mysteries of their own relationship. In Death by Silver veteran authors Melissa Scott and Amy Griswold introduce a Victorian London where magic works, influencing every aspect of civilized life, and two very appealing detectives.

Inheritors (Stargate Legacy Book 6) out on Amazon
The final book in the Stargate Legacy series, Inheritors, is now available through Amazon U.S. and Amazon UK! It's not yet up on the Nook store or Crossroad Press (which will have the EPUB, PDF, and PRC formats as well as MOBI) but should be coming soon.
The print book should also be available in two or three weeks, depending on the printer's schedule. Amazon hasn't chosen to carry the recent Stargate print books, and many bookstores don't either, so if you prefer print, your best bet is to order through Fandemonium or see if your local bookseller can order it for you.
Thanks to everyone who's been along for the ride! It's been great having the opportunity to tell this story, and I hope you all enjoy the final installment.
ETA: And if you've already read the book and want to talk about it, there's a discussion thread with spoilers on Jo Graham's LJ. :-)
