Interview Roulette: L.J. LaBarthe

Happy Fourth! Today we’re joined by L.J. LaBarthe.

What is your worst habit? Your best one? Procrastination. I think I’m a master at it. If I can put off something I don’t want to do, I’ll find a reason to make that happen. As for best… hm. I’ve been told I’m too generous sometimes, so maybe that?
What is the strangest food you like to eat? I love snails. My father was a French chef (born and raised in Paris, trained in Bordeaux), so I grew up with a lot of French delicacies served as regular food. His snails with garlic butter were amazing, as were the crumbed frog’s legs he did. I also love artichokes, which he used to steam and then we’d dip the soft parts into a vinaigrette and eat them, working our way into the center of the artichoke. Yum.
What is the dumbest thing one of your characters has ever done? Tried to fight a mutated monster without enough back up. It was a group of them fighting and there were a lot of monsters. I did toy with killing one of the characters in the process but decided maiming them was much more interesting.
Write a story—no more than 100 words–based on this prompt: When the levee failed…. When the levee failed, he ran. He wasn’t sure that he could outrun the water, but he was determined to try. The sound of it following him was a roar—an insidious thing that grew in volume and ferocity, sounding like an eternally hungry beast. He fled as fast as his legs could carry him, his heart pounding in his chest and terror firing through every synapse in his brain. The water would keep coming, he knew; there was no escape, it told him as it followed him. It had destroyed everything in its path and he would be next.
If your home lost electricity for one week, what would you do to survive? Go to a pet-friendly hotel with wi-fi.
If you could be any other living person for a single day, who would you be? I don’t think I’d swap with anyone else, to be honest. I’m pretty okay with who and what I am, obstacles and issues included.
If you had to live in a movie, TV show, or book, which would you choose and why?Twin Peaks” and not just because I’m totally engrossed in the new season, but because I know my fictional life would be, as Agent Cooper said in the first two seasons, “both wondrous and strange.”
If you had to spend a week snowed in at a mountain, which of your characters would send you screaming out into the blizzard before the week was up? Probably one of the Archdemons. They’d get really annoyed very quickly with human frailty and the fact I hate to be cold, I think.

Book blurb:

1131, The Silk Road.

Gallienus of Constantinople, a scarred soldier who used to work the city gates, enters a new phase of his life when he meets and falls in love with Misahuen of Gyeongju. But prejudice of same-sex relationships dominates Byzantine society, and both the Emperor and the Church denounce such love. Should Misahuen and Gallienus be discovered, the punishment is castration or death. Fearing he’ll lose Misahuen, Gallienus decides to go with Misahuen when he leaves the city forever.

A former farmer, Misahuen fled war-torn Korea and journeyed to Constantinople with a merchant caravan. He didn’t expect to take such an interest in a wounded soldier at journey’s end. But he understands the danger, so he and Gallienus join another caravan as guardsmen and begin a two-thousand-mile trip along the Silk Road. Now all they have to do is persevere to their final destination without the truth of their relationship being discovered and being killed because of it… or by the other dangers along the Road.

Back to work!

I’m back from my road trip! It was a big one. My older daughter (who just graduated high school) came with me, and we traveled through 10 states: California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. We drove almost 4500 miles. At one point, we slept in a different state every night, six nights in a row.

If you want to see way more photos, check out my Instagram and/or Tumblr accounts. We saw a lot of wildlife, hung out with friends and family, and visited some really cool places. Like a coal tipple, a prison, the Penis of the Plains, and not one but two Stonehenge replicas (one made out of old cars). I got to legally drive 80 MPH. And I picked up some plot bunnies too, of course.

But now it’s back to work. I submitted my 21st novel yesterday, and now I have two more novel deadlines to meet.

How did your June go?

Interview Roulette: Aisling Mancy

Today’s player is Aisling Mancy–with a free story!

One of your characters comes to you for advice. Who is it, what does he ask, and what do you tell him? I have two characters pelting me with questions at the moment.        Candelario (the wraith) from Aeromancer (WIP with betas), asks: Is it possible for a wraith to love an angel? My answer is: Fear not! We may not hear the rustle of wings, nor feel the feathery touch of the breast of a dove; but we know their presence by the love they create in our hearts. Sam (the grotesque) from Grotesque (current WIP), asks: Why are humans so emotional? My answer is: Humans react to the world around them, and grotesques are mighty argumentative.
What is your superpower? Imagination. After all, this world is but a canvas to our imaginations. (Henry David Thoreau)
What food would you only consider eating if you were stranded on a desert isle with nothing else to consume? Oysters.
If your home lost electricity for one week, what would you do to survive?   Ask my neighbor if I could borrow an electrical outlet to extend a 125 foot extension cord to my refrigerator. Can’t be without cold Diet Coke. Js
What is the most useless or frivolous thing you’ve ever bought?   Porcelain parrots. Seriously. I did this.
If you were to become a street performer, what would you do to entertain people and earn some money? I would like have liked to have been Marcel Marceau, so a mime.
What did you have for lunch yesterday? Tacos!
You’ve been invited to a party being held by your boss. Which of your characters will you take with you as your guest? I would bring Christy from the Elpída Series . I know he’d have much to say to Elizabeth.

Book blurb for Grotesque :

Sam is a recluse and makes no secret of his disdain for the company of others. But for his sarcastic butler, Sinclair, Sam sees no one. Cursed by his past, and sworn to protect an ancient codex, his days are spent restoring archaic texts, and his nights are spent cast in stone—literally—for Sam is the grotesque that guards the library that hides the grimoire from primordial creatures who would use its secrets to wreak evil in the human realm.

Zori came to Spain with dreams of attending university and becoming a master philologist. With his scholarship exhausted, and his parents no longer willing to support him, Zori is homeless and now roams the streets of Salamanca in the dead of winter in search of food and warmth. When a stranger saves him from near death, his world changes in ways he never imagined.

When ancient and modern worlds collide, will Sam allow his love for Zori to soften his heart of stone? Will Zori see the beauty within the grotesque?

Interview Roulette: A.D. Ellis

Today’s player is A.D. Ellis!

You’ve just met an alien from a planet where there’s no such thing as fiction writing. Explain to him/her/it/them why humans read made-up stories. I would have the alien describe to me all of the mundane, painful, and difficult things beings on his planet have to deal with on a daily basis. Then I would offer him the chance to escape, even if just for a few moments, from the negativity. I’d show him how disappearing into a different world can transport and free your heart and mind.
Is there a New Year’s resolution you’ve made more than once? Did you keep it? Oh, the usual eat better, exercise more is always there. And I do keep it, but different years have varying results. I made a resolution to floss my teeth everyday about ten years ago, and I’ve stuck with it since then. That’s the only resolution I’ve been completely successful in maintaining.
Pick any place in the world to spend the next 6 months. Where is it and why? A beach somewhere. I don’t even care where, as long as the weather is beautiful. Oh, and there needs to be built in staff to care for my children, cook, clean, and provide activities. Electricity and WiFi are a must so I can continue working on stories. Hubby and the kids can come, but I want my own “Me Hut” separate from them for when I need to write.
You have just won a lifetime supply of Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco treat. Your response? Mmmm, gotta love the carbohydrate-laden, broth flavored goodness of the iconic San Francisco treat. I haven’t had that stuff forever, but I really do like it. I’d probably be sure to donate some to food pantries. I mean, there’s only so much Rice-A-Roni a person can eat, and I’m one to share the wealth.
What is your favorite procrastination method? Facebook, naps, reading…I’m pretty good at it. But, in reality, I don’t like to procrastinate much. If something is due on Friday, I want it done last week.
What is your most dreaded household chore? Your favorite? Um, all of them? I sort of suck at the whole domestic goddess role. I hate to cook, hate to clean bathrooms, hate to dust. You get the picture. I hate putting laundry away, but as far as washing and “folding” the laundry, I don’t mind that part.
What was your favorite school subject? Least favorite? Favorite was always reading. Least favorite was always math.

Author bio:

A.D. Ellis spends the majority of her days loving and wrangling two school-aged children and a husband before heading to the inner city of Indiana to teach a challenging group of alternative education students in grades third through sixth. Most days she hits the gym after school in hopes of running and lifting away the stress and headaches of the day before picking up her children and squeezing a whole day’s worth of loving and living into the too-short hours before bed. It’s no wonder Ms. Ellis lives for the slower, easier days she gets to enjoy on breaks from school.

Growing up in a small farming town in southern Indiana, A.D. is grateful to her mother for passing along the love of reading. With her nose constantly stuck in a book, Ms. Ellis became accustomed to friends and acquaintances snickering and shaking their heads at her love of reading.

A.D. never dreamed of being anything but a teacher, although there are certain times of the year when she laments her career choice. Ms. Ellis had a story idea floating in her head for about a year. After persistent prodding from a friend, A.D. put pen to paper and began writing her first story in October 2013. From that moment on, she was hooked. Taking the people and stories from her head and sharing them with readers is a scary, exhausting, rewarding, and fulfilling experience which A.D. plans to continue until there are no more stories banging around in her mind.

A.D. Ellis’ work can be found on both iBooks and Amazon. Please contact her on Facebook, Twitter, or her website.

One the road again

My older kid and I have just embarked on a road trip. You can follow it on Twitter and Instagram. Wyoming! Nebraska! South Dakota! Ten states in all.

And I have a new release. “Corruption” originally appeared in the Of Heaven and Hell anthology, but now you can buy it as a standalone. All proceeds go to Doctors Without Borders. I’m really fond of this story–it’s dark, with a bit of a Ray Bradbury vibe. If Ray Bradbury wrote m/m romance.

That gorgeous new cover is by Reese Dante.

This story is the first in a new series The Bureau. Although each story will involve different characters and take place in a different time, all stories will have something to do with the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs.

“Corruption” is available now at Amazon.

Interview Roulette: Jamie Samms

Today’s player is Jamie Samms!

What is your least favorite thing about California? Its distance from Northern Ontario. A few of my very favourite people live there, and I’d love to be closer to them, if I could.
Describe a really bad decision you once made. A lot of bad choices I’ve made over the years center around the wrong shoes for the occasion. Like, “Oh! These are so cute! I won’t be standing too long” or “ There will definitely be chairs.” Or “the DJ will suck, so there won’t be any dancing.” Or, “we won’t be walking that far.”
A tourist lands in your town. What should he or she see or do? Go see a car rental place, rent a car, and drive away. Seriously. This is a cultural black hole. Go. Find something interesting in some other city. If you really, really insist on seeing a sight here, drive by the giant Big Nickel on the outskirts of town. It’s about the most exciting thing here.
Aside from writing, in what ways are you creative? Well, I did earn a Fine Arts Diploma from the local college. It says I can draw pictures and make things with string. I’m sort of decent at the later, but don’t practice the first enough to be as good as I’d like.
If you could choose anyone on the planet to narrate an audio version of your latest book, who would it be? Quite honestly, I’d pick Greg Tremblay to narrate the entire Off Stage series, if that was an option. Why mess with a good thing?

Book blurb:

Kilmer and Jacko’s relationship has been foundering for a long time. With the end in sight and despairing that he might never find a Dom who suits him, Kilmer heads to a local bar to drown his sorrows—and meets country singer Tanner.

Tanner feels oddly protective of the broken man and eventually convinces Kilmer to hire him to help remodel the small, sad house Kilmer once shared with Jacko. As Tanner and Kilmer get to know each other, Kilmer regains his lost independence and Tanner’s dominant streak rises to the surface. But will it be a help or a hindrance to the trust they’re trying to build?

The answer might lie in the music Kilmer gave up not long after he met Jacko. Music always granted him solace, clarity, and an outlet for his emotions, and with Tanner’s encouragement, he picks up where he left off. Playing together eases them into honest communication, and though a happily ever after will still take patience and work, taking a chance on each other sounds sweeter with every note.

Author bio:

Jaime has been writing for various publishers since the fall of 2008, although she’s been writing for herself far longer. Often asked why men—what’s so fascinating about writing stories about men falling in love—she’s never come up with a clear answer. Just that these are the stories that she loves to read, so it seemed to make sense if she was going to write, they would also be the stories she wrote.

These days, you can find plenty of free reading on her website. She also writes for Various Publishers.

Spare time, when it can be found rolled into a ball at the back of the dryer or cavorting with the dust bunnies in the corners, is spent crocheting, drawing, gardening (weather permitting, of course, since she is Canadian!), or watching movies. She has a day job, as well, which she loves, and two kids, but thankfully, also a wonderful husband who shoulders more than his fair share of household and child-care responsibilities.

She graduated some time ago from college with a fine arts diploma, and a major in textile arts, which basically qualifies her to draw pictures and create things with string and fabric. One always needs an official slip of paper to fall back on after all . . .

Interview Roulette: Tanya Chris

Please welcome Tanya Chris!

Paper or plastic? I have reusable bags, but if I’m only buying a couple of items, I’ll get a plastic bag because I use them for scooping kitty poop into when I clean the litter box.
What is your favorite insect? Spiders get a bad rap. They eat flies and mosquitos and other pests and their webs are works of art. They’re industrious and mind their own business.
What is your worst phobia? I have an irrational fear of dropping my keys down a sewer grate. If there’s a sewer grate anywhere near my car when I park, I panic.
Warm weather or cold? Warm, definitely. Warm weather might make me lazy but cold weather makes me miserable.
One of your characters has signed up to teach a 1-day workshop. What’s it on? Adam Summers will teach a workshop on investment diversification for financial institutions. Adam is the CIO of Palladium Enterprises, and before Will came into his life, he was a workaholic with a mild case of depression due to isolation. He’s better now, but he still loves his job.
Describe one of your weird or quirky habits. I’m a quota writer. When I hit my word count for the day, I shut down, sometimes even mid-sentence.
Aside from writing, in what ways are you creative? I’m a lighting designer for a local community theater. A lighting designer decides which lights will be on at which times, what color they’ll be and how bright they’ll be, in an attempt to add to the sense of space and time and enhance the director’s vision of the show.
If you were magically transported into one of your own books, which one would you choose and why? Most of my books take place in the real world, except for Omega Reclaimed which is an omegaverse story. Omegaverse is fun to read and write about, but I wouldn’t want to live there!
Pick any place in the world to spend the next 6 months. Where is it and why? I like to travel, but two weeks is plenty before I’m glad to be going home again. I always say that if your home isn’t your favorite place on earth, you should take steps to change that.
Write a haiku poem about your favorite beverage

Will be sewage tomorrow

If we acquiesce

What is life today

Book blurb:

Merge Ahead: Will doesn’t know that his safe but unfulfilling life as a Call Center Supervisor is about to be turned upside down. Or that the man responsible is sitting next to him waiting for the same delayed flight. Adam Summers is confident, successful, gorgeous, and about to sign the contract that will cost Will his job. Corporate policy says they should keep their hands off each other, but they can’t. Is their growing affection worth the risk to Adam’s career? And what will Will’s future look like when their companies, and their lives, have merged?

Omega Reclaimed: Angel, an alpha who’s left the violent, strictly hierarchical rules of his pack to find success in the big city, and Leo, an omega on the run from his abusive alpha, are thrust together to satisfy Leo’s urgent heat-lust. But can a once-hurt omega ever trust an alpha to care for and protect him again? And can an alpha sensitive to social injustice learn to enjoy his naturally dominant nature? Angel and Leo must both face the pasts they ran away from before the two can build a new future together. They may not be able to change the laws of nature, but they can change the language of love.

Tanya writes in a variety of romantic and erotic genres, being an avid follower of many of these genres herself. Some of her favorites are M/M romance, MFM threesomes, and BDSM with male submissives. Tanya lives in New England with her boyfriend and her cat and has participated in many of the activities about which she writes, but not all of them. Interview Roulette: Pat Henshaw

Please welcome Pat Henshaw, today’s player!

You can eat only one ice cream flavor for the rest of your life. Which is it? Chocolate chip Cherries Garcia. And, yes, I know I made that up. But it’s for the rest of my life, so I’m calling special priviledges.
You have just won a lifetime supply of Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco treat. Your response? Huh. I remember when I was in grade school and became friends with a girl who lived on the nearby Army base. Her mother would fix Rice-A-Roni as a special treat whenever I spent the night. Thanks for the time warp moment.
One of your characters has a guilty favorite TV show. Tell us about it. Fredi, from Redesigning Max, loves RuPaul’s Drag Race and can sit in front of the TV for hours yelling at the contestants. Or rather, ahem, he can sit for hours giving the contestants his valuable input about their wardrobes and looks.
What’s one thing that inspired your latest book? Frank McCord, who tells the story, is a reflection of a lot of men I’ve known who are quiet-spoken and genuinely want to help people. He’s been living too many years in the reflection of what the people of Stone Acres, California, tell him they see. The book gives him a chance to break free of their vision and become himself. This is a butterfly story.
Pick any place in the world to spend the next 6 months. Where is it and why? Pacific Grove, California. I like the small town atmosphere and the beach. The sound of the waves lapping the shore clears my head of the clutter and makes my imagination soar. I find it much easier to write there than anywhere else I’ve ever been.
Pick a politician and give him or her one piece of really good advice. President Trump: resign.
If you were to write fanfic (or maybe you already have!) which fandom(s) would it be? I once wrote two short pieces of Anita Blake fanfic and sent them to a friend. But it occurred to me after I wrote them that I really don’t want to parrot anyone else’s writing style or universe. I’m too independent. Besides, I like my own style and ideas.

Book blurb:

Everything about thirty-five-year-old Stone Acres hardware store owner Frank McCord is old-fashioned—from his bow tie and overalls to the way he happily makes house calls to his dreams of lasting romance, true love, and marriage. Frank’s predecessors have run the store and been mainstays in the small California town for over a century. While genial Frank upholds tradition and earns the respect of friends and neighbors, he fears he’s too dull and old to attract a husband.

Into his life comes handsome thirty-six-year-old electronic games designer Christopher Darling and his fifteen-year-old son, Henry. Christopher has everything Frank could want in a potential partner: charm, kindness, and compatibility. Also, he’s a terrific father to Henry. When their Stone Acres home turns out to be uninhabitable, Frank offers the Darlings temporary lodging in his ancestral farmhouse, where he and his tenant Emil reside. Since Emil thinks Frank is his, sparks fly. Suddenly, Frank’s monotonous life promises to explode with love and threatens to change him forever.

What’s new

It’s been a busy few weeks.

The end of May is always crazy for me anyway because it’s the end of the semester, which means exams and papers to grade and panicky students to deal with. But this year has been extra nuts.

My older daughter graduated high school. Yay! Now we need to get her ready to move to Oregon, where she’ll be attending college.

The very next day, my younger daughter finished junior high school. It’s hard to believe she’ll be in high school in the Fall.

Meanwhile, I’ve been in edits with two novels and am trying really hard to finish a third. And this week I’m getting ready for a 10-state road trip through the northwestern part of the United States, with the older kid accompanying me. There will be photos, so make sure you’re following me on Facebook and Twitter.

Last week, I released one of my stories, “The Clockwork Heart,” as a freebie, complete with a beautiful cover by Lex Chase. You can download it here. If all goes well, the audiobook of Bone Dry should come out in June.

My quarterly newsletter will be going out soon. If you’re not already a subscriber, you can sign up here.

And one more thing! Together with several other authors, I’ll be attending Sacramento Pride Fest on June 3. Other authors planning to attend include J. Scott Coatsworth, Amy Lane, Pat Henshaw, LE Franks, Jennifer Baxter, Michael C. Schutz, and Davin L Kent. We’ll have books for sale and prizes and swag to give away, so if you’re in the Sac area, I hope to see you there.

Interview Roulette: Tia Fielding

Please welcome today’s player, Tia Fielding!

One of your characters comes to you for advice. Who is it, what does he ask, and what do you tell him? I think it might actually be Joshua from One Step Forward and the conversation would be about depression in general. After all it’s a subject we’re both well versed on.
What is your favorite mythological creature? The reflex is to say Unicorn, of course. But I quite like Thestrals from the Harry Potter universe. They’re sort of the “anti-unicorns,” aren’t they? Dragons can be cool, too, if we’re looking at less modern mythologies.
What is your least favorite thing about California? I’ve never been, but I would say—and this is based on friends’ experiences—how expensive state it is to live in. Oh and the draught, probably?
Which Disney character most closely resembles you? Eeyore. Hands down.
Which holiday is your favorite and why? Midsummer or Christmas. I’m a non-believer, so Christmas has never been about religion to me. It’s more about the atmosphere and family getting together. Midsummer, on the other hand, is a very Finnish thing and it’s just lovely, especially if the weather favors us.
What’s your writing style—slow and steady or full speed ahead? My depression kind of makes me write in bits and pieces, but I tend to prefer to write in chronological order so I won’t confuse my other friend, ADHD. Lately though, I’ve been having easier time writing one particular story, and when I’ve written it’s been full speed ahead for sure. But normally it’s pretty slow.
One of your characters buys flowers for another. What kind? Depends on the character. I would say either something ridiculously colorful like a gerbera or something fragrant, like my favorite flowers Lily of the Valleys.
Pick one of your characters. What are the last three tweets he or she sent? This is from the WIP I mentioned earlier. It’s basically going to be M/M/M story, and these tweets are from Devin, the youngest of the MCs. DevilChild is a family nickname, btw, in case you were wondering….@DevilChild: When there’s no bread in the house, what do you do? You bake!  @DevilChild: I might’ve accidentally acquired a puppy. At least one of my boyfriends is a dog trainer, eh? @ DevilChild: Oooh, this game is gonna be so good, guys! Can’t wait for the release!

Blurb:

Sam Becker, a horse whisperer, agrees to take one last job before retiring to his Texas ranch. It’s clear as soon as he meets the Taylor family in Kentucky that he’s in for a challenge. What he doesn’t expect is the way his own wounds reopen. He’s never really dealt with the suicide of his mentally ill wife, and he won’t be able to ignore that hurt forever.

Joshua Taylor and his horse, Calla, were a force to be reckoned with on the eventing circuit until an accident ended their careers. Most of the pain is on the inside, however, and Sam knows those injuries are the slowest to mend. Sam’s unique methods help Calla and, surprisingly, Josh, but he’s still lost without riding. Their feelings for each other come hard and fast, and Josh starts his first steps of recovery, but Sam needs to return to Texas eventually. Even if Josh is able to move past the accident, they’ll still have a long and difficult journey to make before they can be together.

Author bio:

Tia Fielding is a thirtysomething Scandinavian who is a lover of witty people, words, cats, sarcasm, autumn, and the tiny beautiful things in life. Tia struggles with stubborn muses and depression, but both are things she has learned to live with.

Tia identifies as genderqueer, but isn’t strict about pronouns. Why? Because luckily, in her native language there aren’t gender-specific pronouns. Being a reclusive author living with her fur-babies is another fact of life for Tia, among the need to write that seems to be a part of her psyche by now.

In 2013 one of Tia’s novels was recognized by the industry’s Rainbow Awards in the Best LGBT Erotic Romance (Bobby Michaels Award) category.
