Interview Roulette: BD Roca

What is your favorite footwear? Boots. As Nancy Sinatra sang, they’re made for walking (& other purposes). Boots or not, I always feel better with black nail polish on my toenails. Barefoot is definitely okay once I’m wearing it.
One of your characters writes a poem to his beloved. Broken Sun’s Luc would definitely write one to Morgan. He knows what a true, utter romantic Morgan is under all the surface toughness. Luc being Luc though, it would be a bit like a Sex Pistols song only with more anarchy, mentions of how good Morgan looks in his biker leathers but how much better out of them, creative and obscene use of rhyme, and images for a new tat for Morgan drawn in around the words. The tat would definitely have to be inked on a portion of Morgan’s skin not generally seen in public. And as for Morgan’s reaction, well, the poem would provoke exactly the response Luc desired. He knows exactly what makes Morgan tick

If you had to become a character in a cartoon, which cartoon would you like to exist in?
Howl’s Moving Castle. Or maybe Totoro. Studio Gibli has some of my very favourite animations, and who wouldn’t want to live in a world where there’s such cool magic? Of course, I’d prefer Howl’s universe after the war, because that’s just common sense.
Recommend 3 books by other authors that everyone should read.
Temeraire, by Naomi Novik. I have so many dragon shifter romances in my head after reading the first few books in that series, you don’t even know. http://www.naominovik.com/temeraire/
The Imperfection of Swans by Brandon Witt. It’s as sweet a romance as any you’ll find, with the added bonus of truly wonderful characters with a lot of depth and real-life stakes rather than manufactured berries to getting together.
Anything by Clare London. I have never read a Clare London book that didn’t give me a fun or fractious glimpse of love and romance from a new and memorable angle. No cookie-cutter romance for her, and I love that so much.
Paper or plastic?
Canvas. I am an environmental vigilante. Nothing goes in the landfill, if I can help it. Well. As little as possible. I recycle Christmas wrap. I am that hippie.
Invent a roadside attraction you’d like to run (like the World’s Biggest Ball of String).
The world’s most elaborate tree village. Like, think some kind of cross between the realm of the wood elves and an Ewok village. Everything grown out of the treetops, interlinked and magical, and high above the ground. You never said it had to be an achievable goal.
Which of your characters is going to Vegas with you and why?
Since Vegas is really not my scene at all, I expect Laurie, from Stained Glass, and his crew, because a) they seem like the type of people to do a group excursion like that, and b) since Laurie is a recovering alcoholic, he wouldn’t mind exploring other aspects of the city off the strip with me.
One of your characters is attending a Halloween party. What’s their costume?
Mac, from Still Life dressed as his best, fem, frilly, lacey self. He could go to anyone’s Halloween party, feel like himself, completely comfortable, and not get a lot of strange looks or questions because he’s wearing the shortest, flirtiest skirt in the room.

Jaime has been writing for various publishers since the fall of 2008, although she’s been writing for herself far longer. Her Stories about men falling in love are the stories that she loves to read, so it seemed to make sense if she was going to write, they would also be the stories she wrote.

Spare time, when it can be found rolled into a ball at the back of the dryer or cavorting with the dust bunnies in the corners, is spent crocheting, drawing, gardening (weather permitting, of course, since she is Canadian!), or watching movies. She has a day job, as well, which she loves, and two kids, but thankfully, also a wonderful husband who shoulders more than his fair share of household and child-care responsibilities.
She graduated some time ago from college with a fine arts diploma, and a major in textile arts, which basically qualifies her to draw pictures and create things with string and fabric. One always needs an official slip of paper to fall back on after all . . .

Interview Roulette: Pat Henshaw

Interview Roulette questions:
What is your favorite appliance?
I can’t decide between the refrigerator and the microwave, but since I love iced tea so much, I’ll have to go with the fridge. Besides the fridge has the extra benefit of the freezer, and I’ve been on a kick of having a cup of ice cream after dinner lately. So, yes, definitely, the answer would be the fridge.
What’s your perfect day, time-wise?
I’d get up late by most people’s standards, around 10-ish, stumble around for an hour or so eating a cereal and milk breakfast while thinking about my current writing project, and finally make my way into my office. I’d work there until 1-ish when I’d take a break and go out to lunch for a couple of hours. Returning home, I’d take a nap of an hour or so. Then I’d work on the writing project for a few hours and then have dinner around 7 or 7:30. After dinner, I’d go back to the writing room and finish my day around 11. That’s my perfect day. Oddly, that’s most days for me now that I’ve retired. Sigh.
You’ve just met an alien from a planet where there’s no such thing as fiction writing. Explain to him/her/it/them why humans read made-up stories.
Earthlings are curious beings. We want to know not only about our own lives and the lives of those around us but also about the lives of others whom we will never meet in person. We want to know what core qualities make us human and why we act the way we do, all the while knowing that we are all very, very different. While through non-fiction we can learn about others, fiction—made up stories about others—explores our interpretations of the core qualities and helps us make sense of ourselves and others around us. We read fiction in order to understand ourselves.
What’s one event in your life or on your travels that you wish you’d caught on film?
My husband and I visited Egypt with a wonderful guide, and I wish I’d been able to catch that tour on film. We toured Cairo, visiting museums, a mosque, a synagogue, and other amazing places. We had dinner with an extended Egyptian family and got to get to know them. We toured down the Nile, stopping at ancient cities and ruins along the way. And we flew to the incredible Abu Simbel where a temple carved into a mountain was moved before the Aswan Dam was built. I took photos, lots of photos, but on film I would be able to remember what the guide said about each place and be able to relive the history overload until I could absorb it properly.
In your opinion, what should be the Seven Deadly Sins?
The classic list is Gula (gluttony), Luxuria/Fornicatio (lust, fornication), Avaritia (avarice/greed), Superbia (pride, hubris), Tristitia (sorrow/despair/despondency), Ira (wrath), Vanagloria (vainglory), and Acedia (sloth). I’d keep avarice/greed, pride, wrath, and sloth but also add hypocricy, malevolent hatred, and disloyalty. I’d have to come up with names for them that are as interesting as the classic ones. But that is a chore for another day. (Hmmm, is that sloth in action?)
One of your characters has just been arrested and calls you to bail him out. Who is it and what did he get busted for?
Guy Stone and Jimmy Patterson (from What’s in a Name?) were picked up for wildly careening around mountain roads in the Sierra Nevada foothills on their motorcycles. Guy says that they were just letting off a little steam as Jimmy had purchased a building in a nearby resort town to establish his third coffee shop. I’d call my daughter, Becca, who’s an attorney, to advise them on preparing their case. If nothing else, she and I would have a great time hanging out with Guy and Jimmy and trying to get them out of jail.
What is your theme song?
“Don’t Talk about Me When I’m Gone” by Arlo Guthrie. It kind of says it all in my case. I’m hoping it and “Closing Time” by Leonard Cohen are played at my memorial service.

Which of your characters would you most like to be romantically involved with?
Out of all of my characters Levi from ‘Say it with ink’ is the one I am most drawn to as a character. Hot guys with tattoos and emotional love secrets…. Mmm…
If you had to live in a movie, TV show, or book, which would you choose and why?
Dazed and Confused. Nights like those are an amazing, and scary rite of passage.
What advice would you give your 17-year-old self?
When someone suggests you get tattoos together just hang up the phone… like seriously, for the love of god, hang up the phone.
Life choices made drunk in a bar aren’t always bad… just go with it.
Apply for scholarships or find a semi legal, well-paying side job, cause I’m literally still paying for our education and it sucks.

If you could instantly learn another language, which would you choose and why?
Swiss-Italian, it is the language spoken in the small village on the border of Sweden and Italy that my ancestors came from.

Interview Roulette: Angel Martinez
Today Angel Martinez takes her chances at the wheel.
Make up a new word you really wish would catch on. What is it and what does it mean?
Snorgle (v.) – to half choke upon, half snort a laugh during those occasions where a person is unable to prevent the laugh but also feels some shame regarding the laughter escaping or feels it comes at a supremely inappropriate moment. (He snorgled at the viewing when he realized he was wearing the same suit as the deceased.)
What did you have for lunch yesterday?
I actually had a peanut butter and Nutella sandwich. Yes, I’m eight years old and yes, sometimes I fall hard off the healthier eating wagon. Though peanut butter is a protein and with bread it’s a complete protein, so not entirely bad? Until you factor in that the bread is the white, gluey stuff, and there are other substances involved like chocolate spreads or marshmallow fluff… yeah, can’t claim the nutritional high ground there.
One of your books is being made into a movie. Who would you cast for the major roles?
I’m not an author who likes to pick out actors or models for my characters. Having a living person as the face of the character messes what’s in my head for that character and I’d prefer readers be able to build their own visuals of them. That said, acting is often more about ability to play the role than appearance.
We’ll take Books, Bulls and Bacchanals from the Brandywine Investigations series. (With a bit of time traveling for the casting.) I’d want a young Gary Oldman to play Dionysus. He’s the right size and has an uncanny transformative ability to play literally anyone. Police commissioner, Dracula, yep, he’s got it. For the minotaur, Leander, I’d like a young Ron Perlman. Actually, he could still play the part since there would be heavy makeup involved. Again, he’s sized correctly and is more than capable of playing the shy minotaur librarian convincingly.
You are permitted to place ONE ITEM in a time capsule chest to be buried and unearthed 100 years from now. What would it be, and why?
It would have to be a fidget spinner. Without context, sociologists of the time would be left to wonder, what is this for? There’s nothing more fun than confounding socio/anthropologists. Of course, I’m assuming some sort of catastrophic data loss in the next hundred years or they could just look it up. Cheaters.
If you had a time machine, where/when would you go and why?
I’d go to Renaissance Italy. Leonardo, I have so many questions. Always dangerous, of course. I could let information slip that he shouldn’t have and change everything forever. Come to think of it, I wonder if someone from the future did visit Leonardo. That would explain so much.
One of your characters is running for political office. Who is it and what’s the office?
So many of my characters are non-humans living in human controlled spaces – elected office isn’t really an option for them. I mean Hades would probably be an excellent, if not terribly politic, mayor of Wilmington, but it would be far too much visibility for him. Vikash Soren, one of the police officers in Offbeat Crimes, would do well in city planning, though. He has the scope of vision, the curiosity, and the natural diplomacy necessary for the position. It’s not elected, but it’s a vital appointment in a city that’s constantly struggling to renew.
One of your characters has an allergy that’s proved problematic. Tell us about it.
Oh, this is actually a thing! Kyle Monroe, police officer assigned to Philadelphia’s paranormal precinct and one of the main characters in the first two Offbeat Crimes books, has a meat allergy. It’s an allergy one of my friends suffers from and I wanted to give homage to some of that frustration – people don’t take it seriously, don’t understand that preparation and cross-contamination matter, and so on. Especially problematic in restaurants where the same oil or same surface or same utensils is used to cook both meat and vegetables. The problematic proteins remain even if the meat itself has been removed.

If you were on a cruise ship for a week, what would you spend your time doing?
I have been on a cruise for a week, and most of my time was spent trying to find a moment to myself. If I could manage it, I would spend most of my days in a shady spot on the deck, writing my next book. Also, stuffing my face and drinking too much, because let’s face it—that’s what cruises are for, right?
2. Which Disney character most closely resembles you?
Maybe Sleeping Beauty? I really enjoy a long nap.
3. What is your favorite appliance?
These days, my slow cooker. I resisted for many years, but once I started using it, I fell in love.
4. One of your characters had—much to everyone’s shock—suddenly become leader of a small country. What are that character’s first actions?
What a terrifying thought! If Terry Blackwood, lead singer of the Vulgar Details, had to run a country, the first thing he’d do is set aside plenty of land for national parks, because he’s a low key NP nerd. After that, he’d appoint Henry to make all the decisions for him.
5. If you could communicate perfectly with one species of animal, what would it be?
Birds. They get to see things from such a different perspective than earthbound creatures and I think it would be interesting. Also, they’d make great spies.
6. If you could build any kind of structure to live in, what would you choose and why?
A treehouse. I’ve always wanted a huge, totally tricked out treehouse.
7. What invention would you love to see created in order to make your life easier?
Fantasy invention? I want something to dictate the dialogue I write in my head when I’m in the car or the shower. I can never get it just right when I try to write it down later. Either that or a robot servant who is programmed to be a master chef.

Once, back in the 90s, I pretended to love ska.

Hitler lost even in a human body and an entire army, so clearly I have to go with the monkey.

Happy New Year!
I think most of us are pleased to see the last of 2017 and to welcome in a brand-new year!
I spent the past week in Vegas with family. My adventures included riding 120 mph in a Ferrari, escaping an escape room, touring the Neon Museum, seeing penis puppetry, getting a lap dance from a female stripper, and getting locked in a sex museum. So the vacation was a success!
Right now, I’m working on a book with a Feb 1 deadline. A light contemporary about a lifestyle guru. That one won’t be out until 2019, but I have plenty in store or you this year. Some highlights of what’s to come:
The audio version of Ante Up will be available any moment now, narrated by Andy McFerrin.
In March, The Little Library releases from Riptide. This is a contemporary about a guy who loves books and an ex-cop.
In April, we’ll have A Full Plate, a light contemporary from the Dreamspun Desires line. Big city lawyer meets small town cook.
Sometime this spring, I’ll have a third installment in The Bureau series. Also, Joel Leslie will be narrating all three installments!
In July or August, Dreamspinner will release Blyd and Pearce, a noir/private eye novel in a medieval fantasy setting.
In October or November, another Dreamspun Desires book, this one called The Spy’s Love Song. Jaded rock star and a spy get trapped in an oppressive dictatorship.
I also have a variety of translations due out in Spanish, Italian, and French, so keep an eye out for those!

Describe one of your weird or quirky habits.
I need some kind of white noise to sleep. Right now I have an app that plays ocean waves to lull me to sleep. I can’t sleep without it!
2. One of your characters is running for political office. Who is it and what’s the office?
Oh clearly this is Hank from Exodus (Heaven Corp book 2). He’s the most extroverted of all my characters, and he’s seen so much bad leadership. He’d definitely think he could do a better job than anyone else. And the office? Mayor of Downside maybe.
What is your superpower?
I have an incredible sense of smell. Which is odd considering I have terrible allergies. But the moment someone brings food into my place of work, I’m on that.
What is the oddest thing on your music playlist?
It’s probably a tossup between Finnish Power Metal and baby lullaby versions of classic rock.

Um. Wonder Woman?
Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever written?
I really had to think about this one for a while. Then I remembered writing at a robotics competition. I think that’s really the weirdest place to do any sort of writing.
Describe your dream house.
My dream house would have a huge library in it, several stories tall and with one of those ladders that attach to the walls. It would also have a cozy room with a fireplace and plush carpets and couches. And there would definitely be a sun room with a gorgeous view of the outside – which I can enjoy from the inside.
