"Project to Published" The 5 P's of Publishing
"Project to Published"(almost) Every Sunday
The 5 P's of Publishing
Recently, I headed down to California and had a signing at the Orange County Children's Book Festival, which is why, for the first time ever, I missed my "Project to Published" post last week. After I was done with the signing (I sold out of copies of The Thirteenth Chime!) I started adventuring out and interviewing fellow authors, asking them what advice they would give to aspiring authors. I received many wonderful answers that I will be sharing at a later date (I am working on the video interviews I did that day!) but the reoccurring themes I continued to hear really inspired me so I have created the new Project to Published P's:
1. Practice
2. Perseverance
3. Patience
4. Proactive
5. Precious
Practice
The more you write, the better of a writer you will become. This is true for any muscle you work or exercise you undertake - the more you do, the better you become. Write every day, even if you are busy. I have found that I really look forward to the time I spend writing each day.
Perseverance
One of my favorite quotes of the day was "You can't give up. As soon as you do, you aren't an author anymore." I was asked many times at the book festival how I became a published author. Each time I answered the same way - don't give up. Becoming a writer is easy, but becoming an author can take years of hard work.
Patience
The publishing industry is a hard market to get into, filled with strong competition, elusive opportunities and a large literary mountain to climb in order to reach the top. In many ways, writers are a lot like mountain climbers in that we each have to struggle to reach that next ledge, knowing we have come so far and yet have so far to go. Just remember that once you reach the top, you will have an extraordinary view waiting for you.
Proactive
No matter how you say this (early bird catches the worm, never giving up, going for the gold, etc.) the point is to not wait and go for it! Think of the tortoise and the hare - why did the tortoise win? It took the tortoise a long time to finish the race, but the hare waiting ended his chances.
Precious
The life of musicians and actors have been open to public awareness and scrutiny for decades. Musicians and actors are always on the road, going from place to place, gig to gig, job to job. However, few know of the author's life, or what he or she goes through during a literary career. Writing is easy - being an author is hard. It's hard because the initial challenges that we're faced with, involve writing the book and getting published. But once there, the true journey begins, taking an author throughout the nation and at times the world. Just remember - your writing is something precious and unique. Always keep it that way!
The journey of becoming an author begins with a decision to go for it. Never give up and keep trying - you will get to the top!

The Blog Hop question for today: What's your favorite beverage while reading or blogging, if any? Is it tea, coffee, water, a glass of wine, or something else?
If I am not drinking my normal water then I normally am having tea! I LOVE Green Tea or Earl Grey!
My Question: What would you like to see authors do at their signings? What swag do you hope they will give away that you don't see very often?
Sincerely,Emma Michaels

Important announcement!
Hey everybody!
I wanted to give you a heads up about my new blog that will be more book and personal oriented. I will still be doing all of my normal posts here including my reviews, project to published and more but I will also be doing more personal posts on my new blog: http://emmamichaels.tumblr.com/
Including personal blogs about live, information about all signings, pictures from signings or with authors, fun quotes I find in novels or around the web and just about anything that strikes my fancy. This blog will remain as it always has I just figured that most of the people who follow this blog follow it for the reviews and books but I have had some fan mail about people wanting to get to know the real me and don't want to overload my review blog with that information for anyone who isn't interested. Here is the link and I hope you will visit!
http://emmamichaels.tumblr.com/
I have already done a post about O.C. and will be posting the images as the even progresses. I have my VIP passes for being one of the authors but they also gave me a press pass! YEAY!
Sincerely,
Emma Michaels

Three tips and Tera Lynn Childs
Many of you may have heard of the author Tera Lynn Childs (Forgive My Fins, Fins Are Forever, Oh. My. Gods., Goddess Boot Camp). I asked her what advice she could give to starting authors and I loved her answer:
"Whenever an aspiring writer asks me for advice I tell them three things: 1. Read as much as possible, so you can learn how other writers use words to tell story. 2. Write as much as possible, so you can learn how you use words to tell story. 3. Become a...

Characters, you gotta love em!
Characters are like human beings. When you are writing characters, you want to be able to love them as you love a human being. You love them for everything they are and could be – their traits, character flaws and most importantly their potential. Although some may disagree with me over these characteristics and say that these are not good examples of people, we live in an imperfect world and our imperfections are what make us uniq...
