My trip to New York (BEA, Grumpy Cat, Spencer Hill and more)!

As many of you know I headed out to New York a few weeks ago for Book Expo America. I also stayed extra for other events and some quality time with friends and family. The city itself was amazing and while I have been there before, there is always so much more to see and my previous trips have almost always been 3-5 days. This time I got an entire 2 1/2 weeks and LOVED every minute of the experience.

Let us start with our cast of characters: Keri
Sydnee
and of courseMe
We start out our adventure at Book Expo AmericaLet the fun and learning commence! Here we are on the first day, you may notice a character not in the cast list. His name is Quillbert and he is the literary overlord of Quill Café which just happens to be Keri's blog.http://quillcafe.blogspot.com/ At one point we were then mustached thanks to https://www.facebook.com/thelostimperials?directed_target_id=0  and I got to have random people take pictures with my chest thanks to 3:59. Which at first was unnerving but then awesome. Gretchen McNeil is such a sweetheart and I have started the novel, it is amazing so far! I have a feeling it will be a 5/5 stars!https://twitter.com/GretchenMcNeil  Thanks to a couple of mustache wielding steampunk faeries we headed over to the Spencer Hill Press booth and grabbed copies of Extracted! I also ended up meeting my editors from Holiday Magic which was amazing. I ran into an abundance of other Spencer Hill Press authors I love including Dan who wrote Masters of the Veil and Kendra Saunders who is a fellow Holiday Magic author and happened to look amazing in her specially designed LBD. We ran into each other at the Spencer Hill Author Breakfast as well. Shout out to Trisha who happens to be one of the nicest people I met the entire trip - YOU ROCK!  As our adventure continued we made a friend in the Grumpy Cat line (https://twitter.com/jesseratops) and thus a guide to posing with grumpy cat was born. First off... Practice your grumpy face. Some of us are better at it than others but the grumpier the better. Now here is why: Here is what happens if you succeed in your grumpy face-ed-ness...She looks RIGHT at the camera... and may or may not have fallen asleep. YEAYAH! A-Mah-Zing!Now lets try this again smiling... See that! She bolted for it! Alas... my smile hath scared off 'leh grumpeh cat'.
We happen to have a secret weapon while at BEA

BEA can be the most exhausting few days of your life if you let it. The trick to our high energy excursion? A nice easy going break partway through the day that includes food, a crazy sugar high from amazing cupcakes and a break for our feet.http://burgerscupcakesnyc.com/It is only a few blocks away and features very affordable pricing. Plus, a nice cold milkshake on a hot day is a fun treat.
We returned to Book Expo and continued our adventure. The panels I ended up deciding to go to were mainly geared toward the learning tracks. I learned a lot about new social media, search engine optimization, 'out-of-the box' forms of marketing and the overall industry and I plan to put that information to good use in the near future. It was amazing to learn from top notch professionals who work in the field and get to hear their personal thoughts and expectations for the future.  To anyone to goes to BEA or might in the future, I would highly suggest attending some of the learning tracks. The information they give you goes a long way. It was truly inspiring!
After BEA I ended up going on an adventure to a friend's house and her roof had these amazing views.
Amazing right?I was almost tempted to just lay out on the cement and write for a while but took these pictures as mementos instead. Plus... sun.... so much... sun. Also headed to the Natural History Museum (life changing), Spencer Hill Press breakfast (during BEA), Max Brenner, The Strand, Forbidden Planet, Dave & Busters and more. All time favorite New York restaurant from my stay:The Headless HorsemanWhich just happens to be on Irving street...I fangirled... These pictures may not be the best but they give a general idea of the atmosphere.
While there was more adventure and excitement this post is already nearly picture book length so I will go ahead and bring it to a close. However, feel free to ask anything you would like and more photos are posted on my personal facebook! https://www.facebook.com/emma.michaels.90It is likely I will end up adding them to my like-able page later on this week! <3 Thank you for reading and happy adventures!

Jack Templar Tour and Book Recommendation!

monster hunter tour Tour Schedule  Jack Templar and the Monster Hunter Academy (Book 2)After barely surviving the onslaught of monsters that tried to kill him the day before his fourteenth birthday, Jack Templar leaves his hometown on a quest to rescue his father and discover the truth about his past. Joined by his friends Will and T-Rex, and led by Eva, the mysterious one-handed monster hunter, Jack sets out for the Monster Hunter Academy where he hopes to find answers to his questions. Little does he suspect that the Academy is filled with dangers of its own, many of them more terrifying than anything he’s faced so far. Amazon Jack Templar: Monster HunterOrphan Jack Templar has no memory of his parents and only the smallest details from his Aunt Sophie about how they died. The day before Jack’s fourteenth birthday, things start to change for him. At first it’s great: A sudden new strength helps him defend his nose-picking friend “T-Rex” from the school bully, and even his crush, Cindy Adams, takes notice. But then a mysterious girl named Eva arrives and tells him two facts that will change his life forever. First, that he’s the descendent of a long line of monster hunters and he’s destined to be in the family business. Second, that there’s a truce between man and monster that children are off-limits…until their fourteenth birthday! Jack has only one day before hundreds of monsters will descend on his little town of Sunnyvale and try to kill him.As if that weren’t enough, things get even more complicated when Jack discovers that the Lord of the Creach (as the monsters are collectively known) holds a personal grudge against him and will do anything to see that Jack has a slow and painful death. To stay alive and save his friends, Jack will have to battle werewolves, vampires, harpies, trolls, zombies and more. But perhaps the most dangerous thing he must face is the truth about his past. Why do the other hunters call him the last Templar? Why do they whisper that he may be the “One?” Why do the monsters want him dead so badly? Even as these questions plague him, he quickly discovers survival is his new full-time job and that in the world of monster hunters, nothing is really what it seems.Amazon * Barnes & NobleJack Templar Monster Hunter was chosen as a Book of the Year Finalist by Foreword Reviews.

This is the perfect middle grade series for boys. It has the fun, adventure and excitement that will keep them reading when many books would make them lose interest. This well written adventure features a protagonist that feels very genuine. I have a little brother and this reminded me of when he was the age Jack is and I think at that age, he really would have identified with Jack.  The story line is well thoughts out and I love the beginning. It really brought me in and was very cleverly done. You start out already enticed and ready to read on. Even being a 23 year old girl I was able to enjoy the novel and understand Jack's emotions. Normally this wouldn't be my genre of choice but with books like this, it can be anyone's genre of choice.  If you have a boy you are looking to buy for, grab the Jack Templar series. Heck, if you have anyone who might love a good adventure filled with knights, personal growth and monsters all I can say is; GO FOR IT! This series is well worth the read!

About the Author Jeff GunhusJeff Gunhus grew up in Cyprus, Greece, and Saudi Arabia where there was a distinct lack of television. He quickly found books were the gateway to incredible adventures, fascinating characters and unbelievable discoveries. Now, with five children of his own (all who watch too much television, in his opinion), he has enjoyed revisiting his old books and reliving those adventures all over again.

AUTHOR BIOWebsite / Goodreads / Facebook / TwitterJanine Caldwell was born in Concord, CA and raised in the small San Francisco Bay Area town of Clayton. Four days after her high school graduation, Janine attended California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and graduated with a degree in English.

Janine now lives in Anthem, AZ with her husband and two sons. As a lifelong literature fanatic, she knew it was only a matter of time before she would become obsessed with writing her own work. With relatives like the Brothers Grimm and Anita Loos (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes), she figured fantasy writing had to be in her DNA.

Books published by Janine include Visited, a YA coming-of-age fantasy, Rematch and Double Fault—the first two books of The Vortex Series. The final book in this YA fantasy romance, Deuce, will be released fall 2013.
Excerpt of Visited I gape up at him, the fear beginning to course through my veins. “Who are you?”

“A friend.” He answers in an even enough tone, but at the same time, his face begins to glow the color of amber, making him look warm and unusually vibrant. I’ve never known any being able to radiate such a glow. Any being from Earth, that is.

“A friend?” I manage to whisper back before swallowing a gulp. “Are-are you human?” I’m half kidding, but after years of watching realistic science fiction movies and reading a library of fantasy novels, I think I mean the question more than I want to admit. However, he doesn’t answer me. He averts his eyes, blinking rapidly like he’s unsure of the situation.

Again, I’m at a loss of what to think. I thought I asked a pretty straightforward question and he can’t even answer that. By his omission, I have to assume he’s trying to tell me he isn’t human!

Is this really happening? And, more importantly, if he’s not human, then what is he?

My brain pores through a dozen images at once, my chest heaving from the excitement. I flash to movies, T.V. shows, graphic novels, and to my own imagination as I consider what life form James could be. While I try to convince myself I’m jumping to conclusions, that of course this is all a misunderstanding or perhaps an elaborate hoax, something else itches in the back of my mind. That something whispers: Haven’t you always considered the existence of other worlds? Discussed the possibility a hundred times with Tommy?

The answer to both questions is an emphatic yes. I decide right then, despite all reason, I know what James is.

“I think I know what you are,” I remark feebly.

He turns to me with a spark of expectation in his eyes, still glowing, still warm.

“You came to Earth with that star last night, didn’t you?”

Blood rushes to his cheeks, giving him an even brighter supernatural glow, and then I know I have my answer.

“That’s it, isn’t it?” I sit upright, gripping the sheet into my fists. “You’re from another planet. That’s how you have the power to heal.”

He pales for a second, but amazingly, he doesn’t deny it. He flickers his lashes upward like he’s searching the ceiling for his reply. After a moment, he shakes his head of soft curls that brush his neck before redirecting his intense expression back on me. He licks his lips and smiles pensively, but I feel the same need as before to shy away; whether it’s from shock or from a loss of focus I don’t know, but holding his gaze is next to impossible.

My mind is all aflutter trying to come to grips with what I’m being confronted to believe.
“Incredible. I was right all along,” I murmur, commenting to myself. “Aliens do exist.”

Today Only by D. Love Tour and Giveaway!

Today Only by D. LovePublished: May 11, 2013Editor: Lizzy FordCover Designer: Airicka PhoenixAmazon | Barnes & Noble | Smashwords

In life, there are times you are granted a miracle. It may not be the one you wanted exactly, but it will be the one you need. It will prepare you for the next step in your journey and help you learn to accept the life you are given, even if that life can be heartbreaking.

Excerpt - Rye's POVMy time here is dwindling. Everything around me – my body, the transition from winter to spring, the height chart marking the growth of my daughter, Emily – reminds me that the hourglass that is my life has only a few grains of sand left.
It’s my first thought this morning. I awoke early for a fundraiser, the Big Walk for March of Dimes. I start off with my daily routine. I jump in the shower, trying not to notice how much the droplets of water hurt my skin. The sting is too much this morning. I get out quickly, dry off and throw my hair in a simple ponytail at the base of my neck. I catch my reflection in the mirror and stare at myself for a minute.
Just a little longer? So I can watch Em grow up?
My mirror doesn’t have an answer for me.
"Come on, Em!" I call to my daughter. "Get your shoes on, before we’re late."
I turn away from the mirror, then hurry into the living room and grab Emily by the hand.
"You ready Em?" I ask. Whatever dread or fear I feel in front of my mirror fades at the sight of Em’s beautiful blue eyes.
She looks up at me with the biggest smile, and exclaims, "Yes!"
We hop in the car and head towards the Walk. My daughter’s eyes are glowing.
"Mama, this is going to be the best walk ever," she almost squeals in excitement. The innocence of my little angel never fails to humble me.
She doesn’t yet understand that this might be my last Walk with her.
"Yes, honey, this is going to be the best walk ever," I agree.

Anna Silver Interview Part 2

To see the first half of this interview stop by www.OurBooksOurVoice.Blogspot.com
Hello Anna and welcome to my personal blog!
Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?Free time? You mean, I’m supposed to get free time??? Ha ha! No, I love painting as well. Oils. But it’s time consuming for me and I haven’t been at my easel much these days. Is there one book that has had an impact on not only your writing, but on you personally? The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. It scared the ever-loving crap out of me and made me take my rights a lot more seriously. Also, The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. She showed me that dedication to the sacred feminine was possible. Tell us something most people don’t know about you!I’m a massive introvert. I’m not shy. And I’m actually quite curious about people. I enjoy good company and I’m a communicator. I like to make people laugh. I think sometimes it gives the impression of being extroverted. But I actually need time to myself the same way I need food and sleep. If I don’t get it, I kind of crater physically and emotionally and it gets pretty messy. I’ve learned the hard way to give myself what I need. Is there anything you’d like to go back one year and tell yourself? You’re about to get your first break. Don’t freak out. Just sign.
When you were growing up, what did you want to be?An author. I swear. I’ve been saying it since I was in second grade and Mrs. Maddox read Howliday Inn to the class and did all the character voices. I knew right away, it wasn’t enough to follow the stories. I wanted to create them. When you are reading, what makes a character compelling to you? Is it the same aspects that make a character you are writing compelling?Absolutely. I love conflicted characters, the ones who are a swirling internal vortex of maddening feels. I like my good guys with a dose of bad and my bad guys with a dose of good. I just think it’s more exciting and more believable. And I write my characters like that too. Nobody is ever as black and white as they seem. Not in my stories.
Thank you so much for stopping by!

AUTHOR BIOHeidi Acosta was born on Long Island, New York. Moving around a lot when she was younger, she has lived in New York, Arizona, New York (again), Washington, Georgia, and Florida, in that order. Each place offered her something special, but she will always consider New York her home.

Heidi started writing as soon as she could spell. When she was three, Heidi’s mother gave her a copy of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House in the Big Woods; thus beginning her lifelong love affair with literature.

Writing soon also became a form of therapy for Heidi, when she realized that no matter what was happening in her life, she could find emotional escape while writing. Some of her earliest stories featured her as a princess who explored new worlds with her horse Buttercup. If it sounds romantic, it wasn’t, there was no prince charming in those fairy lands (boys where yucky).

Heidi now resides in Florida with her husband, very active daughter, one hyper Chihuahua, two sweet cats, and one very fat moody cat.
