Sample Sunday

Looking to read a great novel this weekend with plenty of #drama but #NoThugs #NoPimps #NoHoes #NoGangs #NoDrugs? If so, read on…
Baron was in town this weekend, and we planned to drop by a couple of clubs. He had a ridiculous travel schedule, so we didn’t often get to hang out together. I’m not crazy about clubs. They were his thing. I agreed to go along so we could get some buddy time in. We had agreed to meet at Halo, our first stop.
I spotted Baron and his body man sitting in VIP when I arrived. Going out with him could be an exercise in forbearance. My boy always had at least one security person with him. I marveled at how he handled the attention of strangers−fans who wanted to take selfies with him or merely express their adoration. Being so easily identifiable would drive me insane. For some reason many strangers thought they had the right to be so familiar with celebrities. Most often their contact was harmless, although a couple of times I’d seen Baron’s security jump between him and an over-zealous fan who managed to get too close at an event.

We had a few drinks at Halo, and then we moved to Compound where the crowd always seemed a little more sophisticated. Still, we hadn’t been there for fifteen minutes before the women started drifting our way. Everyone knew Baron. They had no idea who I was, but they seemed to assume if we were together, I must have star connections.

An attractive woman with long auburn hair sauntered toward me as though the hip-hop star sitting next to me didn’t even exist. I assumed she preferred my dark chocolate over Baron’s honey vanilla complexion. She didn’t seem at all interested in him and wasn’t the least bit shy. She sauntered up to me and asked what I was drinking.
“Sazerac.” Her eyebrows rose. “It’s made with rye whiskey and bitters.”
“Give the gentleman another Sazerac,” she told the bartender, leaning over the bar and giving me a good view of her impressive cleavage and high, round booty.
“Thanks. My name is Pierce. And you are?”
“Sierra. Are you waiting for someone?”
“No. Just hanging with my boy.”
“You’re friends with Baron Parker?”
I nodded and reached for the glass the bartender put in front of me.
“How do you know each other?” She kept her gaze fixed on my face and flipped her long hair over one shoulder.
“We work for the same company.”
“You’re a musician?”
“No. He records for Sonant Records. I’m the vice-president of Finance for the company.”

I had to contain myself and not sputter at the way her eyes lit up. “Really? I’m impressed.”
“What do you do, Sierra?” I asked, expecting her to give me her entertainment credits.
“At the moment I’m in law school. One more year to go and then I take the bar exam.”
My turn to be impressed. She was not only beautiful, she also had a brain. “So you’re out tonight blowing off some steam.”
She chuckled. “Exactly. My brain can only take so much reading and studying before I start to feel as though my head is going to explode.”
“I remember those days when I did nothing but study. It can wear you down, but the rewards are worth it. What kind of law are you planning to practice after you graduate from law school?”
“Entertainment law.”
And there it was. Perhaps I wasn’t being fair, though. Networking was everything, especially in Atlanta. I wasn’t interested in women who had their sights set on climbing the corporate ladder. But at least we could have an intelligent conversation. For the next twenty minutes, Sierra and I talked about the Atlanta music scene. Judging by her knowledge of the current issues and gossip, she kept on top of what was going on in the industry. Baron was showing off the moves for which he’d become world famous. People often compared him to Chris Brown or Bruno Mars. He had a good voice and he put on an electrifying stage show.
It would be a lie if I said I wasn’t attracted to Sierra physically. As I watched her dance, my body reacted to the sexy way she moved her hips and the bounce of her breasts in the low-cut, tight-fitting dress. She knew how to move her incredible body. While we danced she ran her hands over my chest, back and arms. No doubt, if I asked her to come home with me, she’d say yes. I could easily relieve my sexual tension with her tonight, only I wasn’t interested. No other woman had even made a blip on my radar since I’d met Breelyn. Now that I’d met her, my desire for other female companionship seemed to fizzle. Other women seemed bland and boring in comparison to her deceptively angelic face, voluptuous body and traffic-stopping hair.
The song ended, I said good night to her and went to find Baron to let him know I was making my exit. It wasn’t hard to know his location in the building by the congregation of women surrounding him.

Sample Sunday

Today I'm sharing an excerpt from A Song For You. Pierce comes to Alabama to visit Bree for the first time, and this is what happens on their first date...

* * * * * * *
I grabbed Breelyn’s hand and pulled her back into the mass of bodies moving to the music for two more songs before I put my arm around her waist and walked her back to our table. The club had gotten crowded, and someone else had taken our seats even though we’d left our glasses there.
“Excuse me, man,” I said to the greasy-looking dude wearing a loud Hawaiian print beach hat who was reclining with his legs splayed out in front of him in the seat I’d vacated. “This table was occupied.”

He picked up his drink and took his time draining the glass. “It wasn’t when I got here.” His words slurred slightly,

“Come on, man. You knew someone was sitting here, or the glasses would’ve been cleared away.” I tried to reason with him.

“Go to hell!” He returned to his slouched position with his meaty arms folded as though he owned the place.

Breelyn’s body tensed against my side. I squeezed her waist before I released her and took a step toward the visibly tipsy guy. If the place hadn’t been so crowded, I might have found another place to sit, but this was a matter of principle. The stupid shit-eating grin he sent me pissed me off.

“I’m going to say this one more time,” I said, standing over him. “The lady and I were sitting here. Find yourself another spot.”
“Take that yellow ho somewhere else. I ain’t moving.”
By now we had drawn the attention of people around us. If he’d merely disrespected me, I could’ve let it slide, but he’d insulted Breelyn in the vilest way. My face was burning. I grabbed the front of his sweaty t-shirt and slammed him back in his seat. His head hit the wall with a loud thump. Breelyn gasped and jumped back when the chair came out from under him and jostled the table. Our glasses went flying and crashed to the floor in a hail of ice cubes.

He was big, but he was fat not fit. He lifted his considerable bulk, swung at me and clipped my jaw. Automatically, I hit him with a sharp right cross to his left cheekbone. A string of curses shot out of his mouth. He came for me with a fury. I widened my stance, dropped into a crouch and swiped his leg. The kick took him off his feet and sent him crashing into the tables behind him.

Before he could struggle up from the floor and retaliate, club security had pushed through the crowd. “What the hell is going on here?” one of them asked.

Spectators sitting near all jumped to answer his question squarely laying the blame on big boy. Two security men picked him up and dragged him to the exit. I turned around and found Breelyn looking stunned and breathing hard. Her eyes stretched wide and one hand covered her mouth. The other was twisting a strand of her hair around her index finger.

My immediate response was to wrap my arms around her. “I’m sorry. I certainly didn’t mean for this to happen on our first date. Maybe we should leave.”

“We can go back to my apartment,” she said softly and licked her bottom lip.

I don’t know if it was my imagination, but I thought I saw a sparkle in her eyes. She took hold of my arm, and we started towards the exit. On the way, a brother approached me and introduced himself as the club manager. “Are you and the lady all right? My security men just told me what happened. I want to apologize on behalf of Jazzy Bones.”

“We’re fine. Appreciate the apology, though.”

“We’ve had trouble with that clown before. From now on he’s banned from the club. You don’t have to leave. Stay and have another drink or dinner on us.”
Breelyn shook her head.

“Thanks, but I’m going to get her back home.”

“No problem. One of the guys will follow you outside and make sure he didn’t come back. If you’re ever looking for a job, our security staff could use somebody with your skills.”

I laughed at the thought. “Thanks. I’ll keep it in mind.” We worked our way through the crowd and outside to the parking lot. The security man waited until I got Breelyn into the car and pulled off before he went back inside.

After a few moments of silence, she said, “What you did in there was unbelievable.” Her voice held a hint of wonder. “You didn’t even break a sweat.”

“One of the benefits of MMA, my regular workout. This is the first time I’ve ever had to use it outside of the gym. I’m sorry he disrespected you.”

“I’ve been called worse.” She rested a hand on my knee, leaned in and kissed my cheek. “Thank you for standing up for me.”
One of the hardest parts of interacting with women was learning to read their signals. If you misread an action, it could ruin not only an evening but the possibility of a relationship. I had the feeling Breelyn wanted to get closer, but I had to play this carefully. The kiss could’ve merely been a thank you for my chivalry, but I needed to know for sure, so I hooked a finger under her chin and turned her face to mine. My lips brushed hers. Nothing deep or frenzied, just a light gentle touch. “It’s not even eleven yet, is there somewhere we can go for coffee?”

“I have coffee at home. Tangie bought a Keurig for her store, and it convinced me to get one for my kitchen. If you really want coffee, you can have some there.” Her voice took on a low, sexy tone.

No, I hadn’t read her wrong.

New Release Showcase from Parker J. Cole

Hello! This is one of my tour stops during my one month book tour for Time to Say Goodbye by Parker J. Cole. This virtual book tour is organized by Write Now Literary Book Tours. This tour runs March 5-30, 2018.  Follow the tour here.  Book your own tour here WNL.

About The Author I am an author, speaker, and radio show host with a fanatical obsession with the Lord, Star Trek, K-dramas, anime, romance books, old movies, speculative fiction, and knitting. An off and on addict to Mountain Dew and marshmallows who writes to fill the void the sugar left behind. About The Book Gargi Kapoor is the only one convinced her brother, Dev, is innocent of the crime he was convicted of. When he is sent to the hospital with an unexplained paralyzing disease she finds herself having to lean on the last person she'd ever want to depend on -- a man who wants her brother to pay for stealing his mother's life savings.
Leon Reckley is extremely satisfied to find the man who ripped his mother off suffering from an unknown disease that leaves him paralyzed and in need of rehabilitation therapeutic services. He's even happier when he is given the opportunity to be the therapist that makes him fit enough to return to prison to finish his sentence. No one will work harder to make sure Dev Kapoor serves every minute of his prison sentence.
Gargi never dreamed the man who has utter contempt for her brother would be the man she slowly begins to trust. Leon never thought he'd be convinced Dev might be innocent, let alone be drawn to his enemy's little sister. Together, will they find the truth? Or when Leon's job is over, will it simply be time to say goodbye?

New beginnings...

With the release of A Song For You on February 26th, I decided to concentrate on promotion and marketing of the book and then give myself a week or two to chill. Well, I didn't do much relaxing, but I did get my income tax done and filed away everything that was in a big cardboard box in my office, and read a wonderful book by Atlanta author DL White entitled A Thin Line. I got a chance to meet her at the Wine with Writers event on March 10th. Now I'm reading her novel, Brunch at Ruby's. Both of these books were so good, and I have ever intention of reading her entire backlist!

I'm not the kind of writer who can refrain from writing for long periods of time without getting antsy. During the last three weeks, I started making notes on Book Three in The Lake Series, which now has a title - You Know How to Love Me , after the old Phyllis Hyman song.

A few days ago, after I wrote the opening of Chapter One, the creative juices started flowing and ideas for the story began popping into my head. I spent yesterday morning doing research on a few things.
Book Three is Chelsea's story. If you've read Book Two, you already know Chelsea, Breelyn's other BFF. Chelsea has an interesting backstory, part of which is her affinity for black men. Since she was in middle school, Chelsea has been honestly attracted to the melanated male, much to the chagrin of her ultra-conservative father who is a pastor in the Southern Baptist denomination.

I think I've decided on a character role model for the male protagonist. His name is York Burgos, and I think he's gorgeous.

I won't tell you yet how these two meet, because I'm still working on that. What I will tell you is this couple's relationship is going to cause fireworks in the small town of Eufaula, Alabama, and it's not because of the racial difference.

The secondary characters haven't materialized in my thoughts yet, but this Fall readers will get to find out what's going on with Tangie and Reese and Bree and Pierce.
Stay tuned...

It will lead you through getting out of the places that you are stuck, picking up the pieces after disruption, and releasing yourself to dream again my the future. Get Me Through is path through life's most questionable moments.                                            The title of the book is purposely open-ended and ambiguous because most people are trying to get through. From Kindergarten to College, people are trying to get through school. Whether you are a high paid executive, entrepreneur, or occupying a cubicle, the daily grind of work and handling life issues is a reality. Still others are trying to get through the seasons of a relationship; the harsh winter or the warm summertime feel that relationships bring. On the other hand, the death of a loved one or the death of one’s self-esteem may seem like, to some, as trying to wade through a cloud of never-ending darkness. Ultimately, getting through is a part of the human experience. At some point, trying to get through is a part of everyone’s process, the only difference is each person’s process is tailor made. Even so, no matter what you are struggling to figure out, you are just trying to get through it with your character and sanity intact.Connect SociallyWebsite   Facebook  TwitterPurchase LinkAmazon

Wine with Writers - Atlanta

Last night I attended an event called Wine with Writers held at a cute little place in East Point, GA called the Windmill Arts Center.

When the affair was announced, I got my tickets early, because I was determined to meet Nia Forrester, my favorite indie author. Nia served as a panelist along with Rae Lamar, Jacinta HowardLily Java, Tasha L. Harrison and DL White, and I was not disappointed.

The panel answered questions posed by the moderator and the audience of about 100 readers on everything from diversity in romance to the life of an independent author to the inclusion of current events affecting black people in their writing. The spirited and often comical discussion gave the guests insight into the personalities of our favorite authors, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Being an indie author myself, most of what these women shared was not new to me, but hearing them talk about their experience in this burgeoning segment of the publishing industry encouraged me and boosted my respect for my peers, if that's possible. The industry has gone through a radical change in the last ten years. Contrary to what the naysayers insist on believing, independent publishing has risen from the ugly stepchild of the past to an increasingly respected arm of the business. I found it refreshing to listen to women who were not content to sit around for years and wait to be "chosen" by a traditional publisher. They have been brave enough to get their work directly into the hands of readers, and they are adored by their fans.
The wine, cheese, fruit and chocolate were just an added benefit.
I just want to say thank you to all of these ladies for making themselves available. It was wonderful!

New Release Showcase!

I am pleased to be able to showcase the upcoming release from Unoma Osiegbu-Nwankwor, entitled To Live Again

What happens when one is so obsessed by past pain that they become shackled by its invisible grip? That is the story of the heroine of To Live Again, Itohan Adolo.
Synopsis:The devastation of Itohan Adolo’s tragic love story creates an anger at the world and distance from her faith. That is until Osaro Ikimi comes along. Although he wasn’t looking for love, he wasn’t one to let an opportunity pass him by.
Just when the couple tried to give love a chance. the opportunity for revenge against her ex falls in Itohan’s lap. Unable to let the opportunity go, she sets a plan in motion. However, the satisfaction she feels is short lived when she discovers that the plan will also destroy the new love she’s just realized she can’t live without.
Love isn’t supposed to keep records of wrong but that’s easier said than done. Will they lean on their faith to heal the damage or are somethings just beyond repair?
Excerpt:
“Now I see where you came up with your outlandish assumption.”
His voice caused her to stop digging in her purse for her keys and returned her gaze to him.
“May I?” He gestured toward the drawing.
She nodded, and he removed the tack that held it to the corkboard. She watched as he sauntered toward her. He stood before her. Any closer and his body would touch hers. She moved back, but he moved closer, until she was backed up against the Smart Board. Itohan decided right there and then, she was having a heart attack.
He stared down at her and she accepted his challenge holding his gaze. A vision of him taking her to the morgue because she’d died under the intensity of his gaze flashed through her mind. That could not and would not be her portion, so taking him on wasn’t in her best interest. He was testing her, and she was bound to lose. She should be running and not entering the ring with him. Warning alarms went off in her head. This was a dangerous game, so she gave in. With nowhere else to go, she stepped aside.
“Did that feel like I play for the other team?”
She was stuck. When she told her brother the story, he told her she had inadvertently questioned Osaro’s manhood. Right now, he was trying to prove a point and with the way her breath caught in her chest, he had accomplished his goal.
He bent down, putting his ear at the level of her mouth. “I didn’t hear you, Ms. Adolo.” His tone demanded an answer.
“No,” she whispered.
