Tuesday Teaser news!

Happy Tuesday all!

I'll be taking a short break from Teasers until sometime in August (or sooner) while I finish up THE SERPENTINE BUTTERFLY and THE SEASON OF THE WITCH. I'll be retooling my blog/website in the meantime so hopefully by that time I'll have something new to share as well! I'll still be tossing up teasers sporadically over on Facebook! The sharper the lies, the darker the secrets… 

Kennedy is mine. Too many tortured years have gone by without her, and I’m not about to let another one slip by. There’s nothing that’s going to keep us apart this time, not my psychotic family, not hers, not the tornado that’s ripping through her life or the one that’s ripping through mine. I want to open up my heart to her, tell her everything I’ve done, but that’s the one thing I can never do. Some things in life are best left unsaid. 

Caleb McCarthy is back in Loveless, turning heads, melting hearts and breaking them. We had a few sultry summers together, way back when. Those stolen nights were our treasured secret. But now he’s here, ready to take the next step with me just as my life burns to cinders. Our timing was never good. Someone has lifted the lid off Pandora’s Box and my every worst nightmare is floating around cyberspace. All of the secrets I thought I’d take to the grave are filtering out one by one, and I need to find a way to put the lid back, to bury the box, before the darkest part of my soul is exposed—no one can know what I’ve done. 

Kennedy’s every worst nightmare is coming true. 
Caleb’s are just beginning.

      His devil’s grin is the icing on the very seductive cake. “You have sharp canines.” I run the pad of my finger over his tooth and prick myself with it. “You’re like a sexy vampire. I bet you hear that all the time.”
Sexy? He mouths as if he found the word cheesy, and it is. “Okay, exceptionally handsome. Freakishly so.” My face heats again. My body only seems to react when I’m telling the truth. The lies are so much easier.

Bree pops her head over my shoulder. “I smell a bachelorette party!” Her voice shrills over the crowd, and half the guests turn to inspect us. It’s odd that Bree would want in on the action considering she and Laken hardly qualify as friends, but, seeing that there is a party (with potentially naughty implications), this doesn’t surprise me one bit.

Skyla's POV *The Landon's and the Olivers having an uncomfortable exchange.
  “Misty is with Emily, my soon-to-be daughter-in-law.” Mom is quick to silence my line of questioning. “Emily is allergic to sunlight come to find out. Truthfully, I think she just appreciates her lily white skin.”
     Tad scoffs. “Allergic to sunshine? I’ll give you allergic to sunshine! The only thing the entire lot of those teenagers shacking up under our roof are allergic to is gainful employment! When are herparents going to offer to buy her a brand new home?” He turns to Emma while sloshing the Mai Tai in his hand. “How about you buy up an entire city block, hot shot? The way the kids today multiply like rabbits you’ll need to gobble up the entire west side of the island!” He swills his drink in Barron’s direction. “The death business must be pretty brisk these days, eh? You two making routine trips to all the nursing homes in the area—dropping off some homemade spice cake, ey? A little arsenic in the mix, ey?”     Did Tad just accuse the Olivers of mass murder? And why is he suddenly, Canadian? And why am I secretly cheering on drunk Tad?     Barron and Emma make up an entire slew of unintelligible excuses before scooting off.

His eyes close a moment. “Back to that body of evidence.” His dimples cut in without the effort of a smile. “You sure about that?”

“We know.” Logan is telling me something with his eyes. It’s not a very good thing when he does this. “The interlopers”—he says in air quotes—“came by the other day with Tad and introduced themselves. We had Marshall run their names. Turns out Agent Moser and Agent Killion don’t work for Althorpe at all.”My body pulsates and quivers, already I know this is going to be a crap piece of news. “Who do they work for?” The words tremble out of me like a flock of frightened birds.

 The air grows still between us. I’ve had these moments with my clients before, the stillness before the inevitable truth vomits out of them. This is the fork in the road, where the lie meets the truth. There always seems to be this awkward pause that each of my clients partake in, and, to be honest, I never knew why. But here I am, crossing that same intersection, and I suddenly get it. This is the moment where you admit defeat. I had held fast to the manufactured truths that Solomon gave me, but my next words will draw a big fat red line over everything we firmly stood for. Sometimes telling the truth is painful, and, up until now, I never really understood that.

I might have lied to you a little.” Her lips curl up on the edges, and I marvel at what a neat trick it is. I can marvel at the neat tricks Kennedy is capable of for a very long time. I dismiss the idea of her lying to me, and I wonder if I’ll live to regret it one day.

“What’s happening?” I’ve never seen my mother in such a strange state. “It’s the curse,” Marshall whispers. “Don’t feel too bad. This was inevitable on some level.”“I didn’t curse you.” I reach out to touch my mother in her brilliant blue state and she retracts. “I'm sorry! I don’t even know howto put a curse on anyone.”
“Oh, Skyla.” Her features melt with grief. “I can’t bear this pain. Why must it be this way?” She staggers toward the lake, her feet striding over the water as if it were solid ground. “I could have focused on the situation much better without all this anguish.” The words howl from her in agony. Candace Messenger weeps biter tears all the way back to her glassy throne and not even her cohorts from the big DC can comfort her.
