Updated Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations Security & Audit Field Manual
We are thrilled to announce that we’ve updated the Security and Audit Field Manual for Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations. D365FO is changing rapidly and it was great to be able to incorporate the changes in this update. The new book is available from Amazon in both Kindle and Paperback formats.

Language and Toilets
I’m in Scotland for work and as I was riding to my hotel from the airport, there was a smattering of signs reading TO LET. In some cases there were 2 signs in two windows with the window frame acting as a separator like this TO|LET.
This isn’t particularly special. In the US it’s the equivalent of FOR RENT or SPACE AVAILABLE…except that my American brain kept translating it to TOILET. To the point that I idly wondered why the Scots need so many toilets. I knew that the signs read TO LET, but in the US, that group of letters is more likely to lead to a toilet than to an apartment for rent. My brain kept filling in the missing letter I with each sign we passed.
There’s no real lesson here except to be careful when filling in the blanks automatically. Because if you really need a toilet, that missing letter is important.

You didn’t think that last announcement was it did you?
I am thrilled to announce the launch of the Security and Audit Field Manual for Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations Enterprise Edition. It’s available now in print and Kindle formats on Amazon. My co-author Alex Meyer has delved deeper into D365fFOEE security than anyone I know, and Andy Snook has forgotten more about controls than I knew in the first place. It was a thrill to be able to write with them.
The problem with security books is that they fall into one of two camps. Security books written by auditors explain good security principles, but don’t offer enough detail for use in a specific application. Books written for applications are often filled with details on boxes to check, but thin on important concepts like mitigating controls.
With the Security and Audit Field Manual, we’ve tried to tackle both. Each chapter addresses a set of security principles and details how those principles can be applied using features in Dynamics 365. What makes these books work is that good principles are good principles regardless of the software involved. The key, the expertise, is in applying those principles to a specific piece of software, without losing the principle in the process.
Well known AX and D365 author, former MVP, and now Microsoftie Murray Fife was kind enough to write the forward. His latest book is A Beginner’s Guide to Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations Enterprise Edition.
Former MVP and also now Microsoftie Joris de Gruyter was kind enough to provide feedback.

The Microsoft Dynamics GP 2016 Security and Audit Field Manual is Done!
Building on what we started for NetSuite, Andy Snook and I have finished the Microsoft Dynamics GP Security and Audit Field Manual.
The problem with security books is that they fall into one of two camps. Security books written by auditors explain good security principles, but don’t offer enough detail for use in a specific application. Books written for applications are often filled with details on boxes to check, but thin on important concepts like mitigating controls.

Introducing the NetSuite Security and Audit Field Manual 2017.1
One of the things we promised when we created the NetSuite Security and Audit Field Manual was that we would keep it up to date. It’s frustrating to see books tied to a 2011 version of NetSuite. With 2 updates a year, those books are way behind. With that in mind I’m thrilled to announce the 2017.1 update to the field manual. We’ve added in new security features and updates including improvements to 2FA, GL Impact logging, and absolute session timeouts. Now that it’s out, we’re off to work on the 2017.2 update.

Writing Update
Just a quick writing update:
I’m actively working to update the NetSuite Security and Audit Field Manual for version 2017.1. The update should be done next week and the book available sometime in June with reviews, layout, and republishing the new version.
The Microsoft Dynamics GP Security and Audit Field Manual initial manuscript is about half done and running on schedule to be available for the GPUG Summit in October.
The Security and Audit Field Manual for Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations Enterprise Edition initial manuscript is also about half done, but it’s taking longer than the GP version, primarily because of less documentation and active changes in D365. (Little things like renaming the whole product to the longest name possible because the old name apparently wasn’t long enough. As someone recently pointed out, the acronym D365FFOEE is actually longer than the original product name Axapta. I swear Microsoft marketing would name a car “Microsoft Gasoline Propulsion Vehicle for the Conveyance of People and Cargo.” ) The book is still on track to be done in time for the AXUG Summit in October, fingers crossed.
I’m working to figure out the plot for the next Lizard Wong novel. Two or three options are in the works, but no decisions yet.

New NetSuite Book!
The NetSuite Security and Audit Field Manual is my latest non-fiction book. It was due to be released on 2/15/17, but books are sneaky, and this one slipped out in the middle of the night. Don’t worry, it showed up on Amazon a few days early.
For many companies, NetSuite is the core of their financial management system, and protecting against fraud, misstatements, and errors is a critical component of running NetSuite. Sometimes though, it’s hard to know where to start.
This is a book about NetSuite security written to help users, administrators, and auditors better understand how to plan, implement, and audit NetSuite security. Security books tend to be heavy on theory or application, rarely including both. The NetSuite Security and Auditing Field Manual is designed to help users understand sound control principles and how to apply them in NetSuite.
For this book I collaborated with Andy Snook and Zach Wear to create something unique. The NetSuite Security and Audit Field Manual has an old, army field manual or camping guide theme, and it’s sized to make it easy to carry around and refer to. One of the challenges of any NetSuite book is that NetSuite releases two updates a year, making it important that books don’t fall behind. We’re committed to keeping the book updated as new updates are released.
Various folks at NetSuite have been extremely supportive of this project and we very grateful for their help. The NetSuite Security and Audit Field Manual is available in paperback and ebook formats at Amazon.com. We’ve also got a book page up on the Fastpath site, so be sure to check that out.
For my Dynamics GP friends who are quietly freaking out that I wrote a NetSuite book…relax…a new GP book is in the works.
