Olive Constant McMicken was born in 1904, in Highbury, London, the daughter of Scots letter-sorter John Nathaniel Major McMicken, and his wife, Annie Sarah Williams. She was educated at University College, London School of Librarianship from 1923, and married her fellow student, Robert Ormes Dougan, in 1929. Dougan's husband was posted to Perth during the Second World War, and she moved to Scone, in order to be near him. After the war, he was appointed Librarian at Trinity College, Dublin, where Dougan eventually joined him. The two moved to California in 1957, when Robert Dougan became Librarian of the Huntington Library at San Marino. She died in California, in 1963.
