Halloween History

Halloween, A History Snippet by Phyllis Middleton
I thought about what to write today. Costumes? Parties? Treat…yum?  Once I started researching Halloween, I decided to pass along some of the bits of interesting history the internet was able to provide.

Straddling the line between fall and winter, plenty and paucity, life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which is seen as 'autumn's end' and the beginning of winter. Samhain is pronounced (depending on where you're from) as 'sow-in' (in Ireland), or 'sow-een' (in Wales), or 'sav-en' (in Scotland), or (inevitably) 'sam-hane' (in the U.S., where we don't speak Gaelic). During this festival, people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts.

In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints and martyrs; the holiday, All Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a secular, community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating.

Trick or Treat - Old style    Trick or treating consisted of begging at the door grew from an ancient English custom of knocking at doors to beg for a "soul cake" in return for which the beggars promised to pray for the dead of the household. Soul cakes, a form of shortbread — and sometimes quite fancy, with currants for eyes — became more important for the beggars than prayers for the dead, it is said.
Florence Berger tells in her Cooking for Christ a legend of a zealous cook who vowed she would invent soul cakes to remind them of eternity at every bite. So she cut a hole in the middle and dropped it in hot fat, and lo — a doughnut. Circle that it is, it suggests the never-ending of eternity. Truth or legend ?
The refrains sung at the door varied from "a soul cake, a soul cake, have mercy on all Christian souls for a soul cake," to the later:
Soul, soul, an apple or two,If you haven't an apple, a pear will do,One for Peter, two for Paul,Three for the Man Who made us all.

Halloween today, to most of us, Halloween means fun costumes and creative food at parties.

Back in my cop days, we had a Sargeant who had a sense of humor different than most. That humor lead to a memo to those of us who had to work patrol on Halloween.  It was a simple message:
Memo:  When responding to calls, do NOT go to the door and say Trick or Treat.

Do You Believe in #Ghosts? by Karilyn Bentley

#ghosts #Halloween

Tis the season for spookiness and things that go bump in the dark. I don't know about you but I love fall. Here in Texas, it usually doesn't get very cold this time of year, but it does cool down into the 70s, which makes for great trick or treating weather. And seeing all the Halloween decorations around my neighborhood makes me think of the more spooky side of the holiday.

Yep, I'm talking about ghosts. Do you believe in them? I do. Maybe not the way they're portrayed in the movies, but I do have a healthy belief in otherworldly spirits. Perhaps that's because as a child I used to be able to see the occasional ghost or feel their spirits haunting certain houses. But my favorite ghost story really isn't mine, it happened to a colleague.

This lady said if she couldn't see it, then she didn't believe in it. Naturally, for her, ghosts did not exist. Until she built her dream home, that is.

After sinking all her money into her dream home, it started having foundation problems, the only house in the neighborhood to literally crack in half. The swimming pool even shifted so the water would seep out of one end since the other end was higher. While annoying, and according to whoever she spoke to, unfixable, it still wasn't as bad as the ghost.

When they moved in, they painted their five year old's room purple. A day later, child-sized handprints danced across the wall. They repainted. The handprints returned. Kind of creepy, but they thought their daughter lied to them about touching the wall. Then her daughter started talking about her new friend and how they liked to play together and the lady just thought the kid has an invisible friend. Nothing that abnormal. Until her housekeeper quit, claiming she saw a ghost and refused to work in a haunted house. That's when she realized she had a problem.

She then told her daughter to stop playing with her new "friend" and started walking her property line. Behind the back fence was a stream and she found old headstones from graves. Yep, her house had been built on an old graveyard. She tried to call one of the TV ghost hunters but the ghost wasn't aggressive and they only wanted aggressive ghosts for their shows. The colleague ended up moving.

Kinda spooky, eh?

What about you? Have you ever seen a ghost? Do you believe or not?

#Plotting Princesses welcome E E Burke who's romancing the railroads

Today, we welcome guest author E.E. Burke, who writes sexy, suspenseful historical romance set in the American West. Her writing has earned accolades in regional and national contests, including RWA’s Golden Heart. She recently released Her Bodyguard, the latest book in the series Steam! Romance and Rails.

Steam! Romancing the railroads…

Something about railroads calls to my romantic nature. Maybe it’s the passion and excitement of a long-ago era when America expanded its boundaries as fast as men could lay track. I wanted to give readers a glimpse into that exciting time period, and that’s how the idea came about for the series Steam! Romance and Rails.

Both books in this series are set against an actual construction race between two railroads with long names that were dubbed “The Katy” and “The Border Tier.” Passion’s Prize focuses on The Katy’s story. Her Bodyguard follows the troubled Border Tier and a woman embroiled in a bitter war between the railroad and rioting settlers.

I’ve often found that historical fact is better than anything I could’ve made up, and in this case, I wasn’t disappointed. The story of the Border Tier has all the makings of an epic: crooked politics, underhanded landlords, angry mobs, liars, cheats, and mysterious killers. It wasn’t difficult to craft a suspenseful tale around colorful historical events and characters. My challenge was developing primary characters as compelling as the supporting cast.

For inspiration, I dove into the history books. The fiercely independent Kansas women who championed suffrage and equal rights served as models for my heroine, Amy, and the tough-as-nails but troubled survivors of Missouri’s guerrilla war gave me inspiration for my hero, Buck.

When I put these two together at cross purposes in the midst of a cutthroat railroad competition, with settlers’ rioting against the owners and a mysterious character stalking the heroine, the story just came together beautifully.

Buck and Amy are so wrong for each other on the surface, but so right for each other when in comes to what counts: the heart. But first they have to overcome deceit and betrayal—and redemption is really what is at the heart of this story.

Here’s a small excerpt:

“Your husband abandoned you in Girard?”

Irritation flickered across her face. “He’s not my husband, and he didn’t abandon me.”

It was on the tip of Buck’s tongue to ask why she was traveling with a man who wasn’t her
husband. But then, what did he care who she traveled with? He opted for a safer question. “Why were you there? From what I hear, it’s not exactly a safe place for a woman.”

She finished chewing the last bite before responding. “I had business in town.”

“Business?”

Her lips sealed. Apparently, she didn’t wish to elaborate.

Buck smoothed his mustache with his thumb and forefinger, mulling over her hesitation. Just what kind of business would a wealthy lady have with a bunch of rowdy settlers? When he’d come up on her, she’d been terrified, even after he told her he was trying to help. Had even offered him money. More money…

His scalp began to tingle, a sure sign something wasn’t right. He leaned forward, draping an arm over his knee to appear casual. “I didn't mean to frighten you when I rode up. You must've been expecting trouble.”

“Trouble is one way to put it….” She toyed with a curl at her cheek, not meeting his eyes. “You see, I thought you were going to kill me.”

The most dangerous man may be the one she hires…

For America “Amy” Langford, investing in the Border Tier Railroad isn’t about chasing riches. The savvy businesswoman is after bigger stakes: influence, respect, success her father didn’t live to see.  Rioting settlers and underhanded competitors can’t stop her, but a killer might. When a stranger comes to her rescue, she trusts her instincts and hires him as her bodyguard.  Buck O'Connor has put his violent past behind him, but being a wanted man dictates a life of deceit. So what’s one more lie? He becomes Amy’s protector so he can secretly thwart her railroad’s progress to help his cousin avoid financial ruin. A great scheme—until he falls in love.  While Buck hides his true purpose, Amy lies to herself about her growing feelings for her bodyguard. But the price for deceit is steep, and secrets from the past could destroy their future...if they survive.
Her Bodyguard is available on Amazon (http://amzn.to/15nfO3m) and B&N (http://bit.ly/1hFvYrk). It can also be purchased in paperback (http://amzn.to/19j3HE4)

Favorite Western?

I have quite a few favorite Western books and shows. But my current favorite is the AMC television series Hell On Wheels, which follows the building of the transcontinental railroad through the lives of characters who inhabit the moving town they’ve dubbed “Hell On Wheels.”

Have you got a favorite Western book or movie or television show? What is it, and why is it your favorite?

Thank you so much, E E Burke for visiting the PP today!

Prepping for the Holidays!!!

Fall is in the air – that lovely little nip at your nose and toes. The way the air swirls in your lungs, colder than normal and invigorating. I love fall and the promise of the coming holidays--holidays and meals and parties. Since my house is frequently hosting said meals, I thought I’d share two of my absolute favorite holiday staples.

One is Sweet… and so loved that it inspired one super sexy scene in my holiday romance Hollywood Holiday!

Gingerbread Men Cookies1 cup packed brown sugar
1/3 cup shortening
1 ½ cups dark molasses
2/3 cup water
6 cups Gold Medal flour
2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground allspice
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp ground cinnamon

You can (my mother has) burn up your mixer with this, so please:
Mix brown sugar, shortening, water & molasses together. STIR in remaining ingredients. Refrigerate at least 2 hours.

Heat your over to 350 degrees. Lightly Pam or grease your cookie sheet. Roll out dough on floured surface and cut out (with well floured cookie cutters) cookies. Place a few inches apart and bake 10-12 minutes. Once cool, decorate with frosting, red hots, gumdrops, and whatever yummy deliciousness you want to use on your cookies.

This is also a perfect recipe for a gingerbread house! Which, to me, is the perfect centerpiece for any holiday table.

The other is Savory… a recipe from my mom. This is a super easy, relatively inexpensive treat for parties.

Shrimp Roll-ups (Crab Roll-ups)
I loaf white bread
1 lb butter
½ lb Velveeta
7 or 8oz. shredded crab or canned shrimp
1 can sesame seeds

In saucepan, melt cheese and butter. Cool and add crab or shrimp. Stir until completely blended.

Set aside ends of loaf. Cut crusts of bread and roll each piece as thin and flat as you can. Spread a mixture of cheese and seafood on each slice and roll them jelly-roll style. Arrange seam-side down on a cookie sheet. Melt the butter in a pan, brush rolls (well) with butter and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Freeze.

Whenever you’re ready, pull some from the freezer, cut each roll into 3-4 pieces and broil until golden brown. Serve hot.

Have any staple recipe for the holidays? If you decide to make one of these, I hope you enjoy it!

Vicki Batman ~ Fall is in the air! Michelle Miles isn't the only crafty girl out there. lol

Fall is in the air!
Michelle Miles may be a crafting genius with her pumpkins; however, I am crafty sometimes, too.  I'd gone to the grocery store and thought I'd peruse the Halloween/Fall aisle cause—you never know. And lo and behold, something did catch my eye: a candy carrier. Since the boys are grown, I don't need candy sitting around because I'd buy chocolate (tried the caramel Milky Way yet??), and I'm like most red-blooded girls, I'll eat every freakin' piece so it isn't wasted.
For this door decoration, all I did was loop ribbon over the handle to hang from a tack on the top of my door. I tied a festive wire ribbon into a simple bow with florist wire, then wired it onto the handle of the candy carrier. Here's Ethel:
And here's Frank with a battery powered tea light inside:  I thought turned out rather cool. J And not long after Halloween is Thanksgiving. I love to decorate wreaths (hot glue guns rock!) and found this one with shades of fall leaves at a craft store. I tied a magnificent bow with streamers. Added springs of different colors of acorns, oak leaves, and magnolia leaves. Here you go:  I know you're saying "Vicki, Vicki, Vicki. I can't make that bow." Yes, you can. Wire ribbon is so much easier than the other stuff and easy to fluff to look new again. Don't be afraid. Here's a link on how to tie bows:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hS7hK9dau50

He makes the bow the same way I do. I go for more casual streamers.

Do you make Fall decorations? I'd love to see yours.

Vicki Batman is drinking the diet Coke with Splenda and shaking her head cause she has lots of new stuff coming soon: The Great Fruitcake Bake-off in December, Bug Stuff…and Other Stories in February, an essay, and finally, the big book: Temporarily Employed. If you like fun stuff, VB is your gal.

Michelle Miles: Getting Crafty for Fall

Fall is my all-time favorite season. And it’s a very short season here in Texas. You blink, you miss it. But there’s something wonderful about the season. It’s when the weather starts to change. We get a little rain and cooler temps. Well, sometimes. It’s still been hot here and by hot I mean 80+ degrees. THIS is unacceptable fall weather in my opinion.
But when the calendar hits October 1, I’m all about getting the fall decorations out. I confess I started a little early this year. I couldn’t help it. I got these super cool blinking eyes that go in the window. See, I like “cute” and “fun” Halloween decorations. Not gory and gross. We’re the house that the little kids love to come to because it’s cute and fun. I put out the fog machine, too, to give it some ambiance. This year we’re trying to figure out how to get more fog.
Anyway… I have lots of fall décor. We buy new stuff every year to add to the collection. I LOVE decorating with these fall colors. This year, I decided I wasn’t going to carve any pumpkins – first time in about six years. Instead, I bought fake ones to decorate. And I had a great time doing it, too!
Check out this chevron pumpkin I made:

It wasn’t easy and it took forever but I love the end result. It came out really cute. I put it on a plant stand in the flower bed to elevate it and sort of give it center stage. Because I had such wild success with that (grin) I decided to make another one. I got a white one and some stencils and black paint and made this one.

It was a little easier than the first one and took less time. It came out pretty cute too I think.
But the third one I made is probably my favorite. Check it out:
I used Mod Podge lightweight papers and Mod Podge Matte glue. It was SUPER easy and came out so cute! I had a blast making it. You can spell out whatever word you want – I choose spooky because I thought it was cute. But the kit comes with enough letters to spell out “Boo” or “Halloween” or even “Creepy”.
Note: This doesn’t do well in rain. I had to rescue it from the front yard. Someone suggested putting lacquer over it so I may do that so it CAN sit outside and not get messed up.
If you want a link to the project (and others), click here.I used to do a ton of crafts long ago and then settled on cross-stitch but I found I really enjoy doing things like this again. I already have a Christmas project in mind. :)
Are you crafty?

Christina Tetreault: Where do Ideas Come From?

Where do I get the ideas for my stories?

Now there's a question with no single answer. Ideas for my stories come from any number of places.  Sometimes, I draw from places and events in my own life.  In fact, I made the Sherbrookes, the wealthy family featured in my series, from Newport because I got married in one of the grand mansions down there and always wondered about the people who originally built them.  Another example of when I pulled from my own life can be seen in book 3, The Billionaire Princess. When I started that book, I had just returned from a trip to Virginia Beach with my husband. Then I decided that I wanted Sara and Christopher to go on a camping trip, and since Virginia Beach was so fresh in my mind it made sense to send them there.
Other times, I get ideas from pictures.  While writing book 4, The Billionaire's Best Friend, I found a picture of a male fitness model that fit the way I pictured the hero, Nate Callahan.  Since the model had a tattoo, I just had to give Nate one too.
Sometimes, ideas just pop into my head.  On more than one occasion, I have been stuck on a scene, and then a solution will just come to me as I wash my hair or cook dinner.    Blurb: When Lauren meets wealthy CEO Kevin Walsh, she believes he could be the man to make her life whole again.  That is until the night Nathaniel Callahan, her high school sweetheart and the one man she has always loved, shows up. Excerpt:        With his hand still wrapped around her wrist, she took a step away from him. "Soon you'll go back to wherever the military wants you. We may never see each other again. The past doesn't matter."             "Like I told you the other night, Lauren. I am not leaving." He focused on removing the anger from his voice.             A cynical smile formed on her face. "You left the marines? Yeah, right. They mean more to you then I ever did." The anger he'd heard before diminished, but sadness took its place.             Nate reached out his free hand and touched her cheek. "That's not true, and I'm no longer on active duty." The warmth from her skin managed to penetrate through the calluses on his hands. "I'm in the reserves now. Last month I graduated from the FBI Academy in Quantico."             Lauren's eyes flew open. "You're an FBI Agent? Seriously!" Her voice hit the next octave.             Surprise and shock trumped anger any day of the week. "Yeah, in the Boston field office."             "Wow, that's..." The awe in her voice trailed off. "That doesn't change anything." She took a step back, and his hand fell away.             With the increased distance between them, again the sunshine he'd felt bathed in a moment ago disappeared. "I don't believe that." In two steps he closed the distance between them. Before she could move again he made his move. He let his lips brush against hers.             Home. The word lit up in his head. Regardless of the years gone by, he belonged right here with this woman. He always had. Find Christina's book at: http://amzn.to/15Nr0qu(AZ)

Elizabeth Essex: Buns and Roses Literary Tea

Buns and Roses Literary Tea for Literacy
After a long summer spent with my nose to the writing grindstone, I’m ready for a little fun. And a little hat wearing.

This Sunday will mark the third year that I have participated in a local charity event known as Buns & Roses Tea to benefit the Richardson Adult Literacy Center. Literacy is a cause that is near and dear to most writers’ hearts—without a literate population, we have no readers. This years Buns & Roses will feature 25 authors, it is a wonderful afternoon full of fun, meeting readers and making new friends. And I’ll have my own fan-girl moment—this year's acclaimed historical romance author, Cathy Maxwell, will deliver the keynote address.

But honestly, all altruism aside, for me it’s all about the hats. I am entirely convinced that tea tastes better when one is wearing a hat—the sillier the better. (I have tested this theory both at high tea at the Ritz Carlton, and at Buns & Roses.) The first year I attended, I wore a simple black feather fascinator. Last year I decided I needed to up the ante, and MADE my own over-the-top fascinator of brightly colored butterflies. This year I am faced with a choice: a gorgeous full hat with curling pheasant feathers for fall, or a peacock feather bedecked fascinator.

What do you think, readers? Which hat should I choose? And what kind of hat would you choose to wear if we were to have an imaginary Plotting Princesses High Tea?
