How can you tell whether Russia has invaded Ukraine?

Russia's Invasion of Ukraine: Not Going to Plan? - 19FortyFive

Dmitry Orlov

Here’s your chance to check reality against my predictions made 8 years ago Saturday, August 30, 2014

Last Thursday the Ukrainian government, echoed by NATO spokesmen,  declared that the the Russian military is now operating within Ukraine’s  borders. Well, maybe it is and maybe it isn’t; what do you know? They  said the same thing before, most recently on August 13, and then on  August 17, each time with either no evidence or fake evidence. But let’s  give them the benefit of the doubt.

You be the judge. I put  together this helpful list of top ten telltale signs that will allow you  to determine whether indeed Russia invaded Ukraine last Thursday, or  whether Thursday’s announcement is yet another confabulation. (Credit to Roman Kretsul).

Because if Russia invaded on Thursday morning, this is what the situation on the ground would look like by Saturday afternoon.

1. Ukrainian artillery fell silent almost immediately. They are no  longer shelling residential districts of Donetsk and Lugansk. This is  because their locations had been pinpointed prior to the operation, and  by Thursday afternoon they were completely wiped out using air attacks,  artillery and ground-based rocket fire, as the first order of business.  Local residents are overjoyed that their horrible ordeal is finally at  an end.

2. The look of military activity on the ground in  Donetsk and Lugansk has changed dramatically. Whereas before it involved  small groups of resistance fighters, the Russians operate in battalions  of 400 men and dozens of armored vehicles, followed by convoys of  support vehicles (tanker trucks, communications, field kitchens, field  hospitals and so on). The flow of vehicles in and out is non-stop,  plainly visible on air reconnaissance and satellite photos. Add to that  the relentless radio chatter, all in Russian, which anyone who wants to  can intercept, and the operation becomes impossible to hide.

 3. The Ukrainian military has promptly vanished. Soldiers and officers  alike have taken off their uniforms, abandoned their weapons, and are  doing their best to blend in with the locals. Nobody thought the odds of  the Ukrainian army against the Russians were any good. Ukraine’s only  military victory against Russia was at the battle of Konotop in 1659,  but at the time Ukraine was allied with the mighty Khanate of Crimea,  and, you may have noticed, Crimea is not on Ukraine’s side this time  around.

4. There are Russian checkpoints everywhere. Local  civilians are allowed through, but anyone associated with a government,  foreign or domestic, is detained for questioning. A filtration system  has been set up to return demobilized Ukrainian army draftees to their  native regions, while the volunteers and the officers are shunted to  pretrial detention centers, to determine whether they had ordered war  crimes to be committed.

5. Most of Ukraine’s border crossings  are by now under Russian control. Some have been reinforced with air  defense and artillery systems and tank battalions, to dissuade NATO  forces from attempting to stage an invasion. Civilians and humanitarian  goods are allowed through. Businessmen are allowed through once they  fill out the required forms (which are in Russian).

6. Russia  has imposed a no-fly zone over all of Ukraine. All civilian flights have  been cancelled. There is quite a crowd of US State Department staffers,  CIA and Mossad agents, and Western NGO people stuck at Borispol airport  in Kiev. Some are nervously calling everyone they know on their  satellite phones. Western politicians are demanding that they be  evacuated immediately, but Russian authorities want to hold onto them  until their possible complicity in war crimes has been determined.

7. The usual Ukrainian talking heads, such as president Poroshenko, PM  Yatsenyuk and others, are no longer available to be interviewed by  Western media. Nobody quite knows where they are. There are rumors that  they have already fled the country. Crowds have stormed their abandoned  residences, and were amazed to discover that they were all outfitted  with solid gold toilets. Nor are the Ukrainian oligarchs anywhere to be  found, except for the warlord Igor Kolomoisky, who was found in his  residence, abandoned by his henchmen, dead from a heart attack.  (Contributed by the Saker.)

8. Some of the over 800,000  Ukrainian refugees are starting to stream back in from Russia. They were  living in tent cities, many of them in the nearby Rostov region, but  with the winter coming they are eager to get back home, now that the  shelling is over. Along with them, construction crews, cement trucks and  flatbeds stacked with pipe, cable and rebar are streaming in, to repair  the damage from the shelling.

9. There is all sorts of intense  diplomatic and military activity around the world, especially in Europe  and the US. Military forces are on highest alert, diplomats are jetting  around and holding conferences. President Obama just held a press  conference to announce that “We don’t have a strategy on Ukraine yet.”  His military advisers tell him that his usual strategy of “bomb a little  and see what happens” is not likely to be helpful in this instance.

10. Kiev has surrendered. There are Russian tanks on the Maidan Square.  Russian infantry is mopping up the remains of Ukraine’s National Guard.  A curfew has been announced. The operation to take Kiev resembled  “Shock and Awe” in Baghdad: a few loud bangs and then a whimper.

Romania’s most famous football team, Steaua Bucharest, announce a ban on VACCINATED players

Romanian businessman Becali believes players vaccinated against coronavirus are 'powerless'

Kishan Vagela

Daily Mail

Mr Gigi Becali believes players vaccinated against coronavirus are ‘powerless’ He claims players at Steaua Bucharest and rival clubs are struggling after taking the vaccine The Romanian businessman singled out 36-year-old winger Ciprian Deac as an example of vaccine allegedly affecting older playersBecali also recently said Steaua Bucharest striker Claudiu Keseru can no longer play at a high levelHis latest statement has drawn a furious reaction from the country’s governmentRomania’s vaccination rate of 86.52 doses per 100 population means they have the second lowest in Europe

The owner of Romanian side Steaua Bucharest has sensationally announced the club will ban all players vaccinated against Covid-19 from playing for them.

Mr Gigi Becali – a Romanian businessman and politician – said he is not allowing vaccinated players to play anymore because they are ‘powerless’.

Becali went on to claim that people who are vaccinated against the virus die in hospitals, as opposed to those who have refused the jabs.

He also claimed players at Romanian rivals CFR Cluj and Rapid Bucuresti were struggling as a result of taking the vaccine, singling out 36-year-old winger Ciprian Deac.

‘You’re going to laugh, but I might be right. Those vaccinated lose their strength. That’s something scientific,’ he said according to Romanian journalist Emanuel Rosu.

‘Haven’t you seen it at CFR? With Rapid, the players seemed to be fainting. They slept on the ground. All vaccinated people lose their strength!

‘I also see mine, the vaccinated ones. It doesn’t affect some, but it does affect those who are older. Haven’t you seen [Ciprian] Deac? There is no more storm.’

Follow the Data, They Said and Then Hid It

The First FDA-Approved Ebola Vaccine: Another Animal ...

Jeffrey A. Tucker

Brownstone Institute

Never before has the public had access to so much data on a virus and its effects. For two years, data festooned the daily papers. Dozens of websites assembled it. We were all invited to follow the data, follow the science, and observe as scientists became our new overlords, instructing us how to feel, think, and behave in order to “flatten the curve,” “drive down cases,” “preserve capacity,” “stay safe,” and otherwise deploy all the powers of human will to respond to and manipulate disease outcomes.

We could watch it all in real time. How beautiful were the waves, the curves, the bar charts, the sheer power of the technology. We can look at all the variations and the trajectories, assemble them by country, click here and click there to compare, see new cases, total cases, unvaccinated and vaccinations, infections and hospitalizations, deaths in total or death per capita, and we could even make a game out of it: which country is doing better at the great task, which group is better at complying, which region has the best outcomes.

It was all quite dazzling, the power of the personal computer combined with data collection techniques, universal testing, instant transmission, and the democratization of science. We were all invited to participate from our laptops to bone up on statistics, download and look, assemble and draw, manipulate and observe, and be in awe of the masters of the numbers and their capacity for responding to every trend as it was captured and chronicled in real time.

Then one day, writing at the New York Times, reporter Apoorva Mandavilli revealed the following:

For more than a year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has collected data on hospitalizations for Covid-19 in the United States and broken it down by age, race and vaccination status. But it has not made most of the information public…. Two full years into the pandemic, the agency leading the country’s response to the public health emergency has published only a tiny fraction of the data it has collected, several people familiar with the data said.

Kristen Nordlund, a spokeswoman for the C.D.C., said the agency has been slow to release the different streams of data “because basically, at the end of the day, it’s not yet ready for prime time.” She said the agency’s “priority when gathering any data is to ensure that it’s accurate and actionable.”

Another reason is fear that the information might be misinterpreted, Ms. Nordlund said.

At the appearance of this story, my data science friends who have been digging through the databases for nearly two years all let a collective: argh! They knew something was very wrong and had been complaining about it for more than a year. These are sophisticated people at Rational Ground who keep their own charts and host data programs of their own. They have been curious all along about the exaggerations, the poor communication regarding the gradients of risk, the lags and holes in the demographic data on hospitalization and death, to say nothing of the strange way in which the CDC has been manipulating presentations on everything from masking to vaccination status and much more.

It’s been a strange experience for them, especially since other countries in the world have been absolutely scrupulous about collecting and distributing data, even when the results do not comport with policy priorities. There can be little doubt, for example, that the missing data bears on the issue of vaccine effectiveness and very likely demonstrates that the claim that this was a “pandemic of the unvaccinated” is completely unsustainable, even from the time when it was first made.

In the New York Times story, many top epidemiologists were quoted expressing everything from frustration to outrage.

“We have been begging for that sort of granularity of data for two years,” said Jessica Malaty Rivera, an epidemiologist and part of the team that ran Covid Tracking Project, an independent effort that compiled data on the pandemic till March 2021. A detailed analysis, she said, “builds public trust, and it paints a much clearer picture of what’s actually going on.”

Well, if public trust is the goal, it’s not going so well. In addition to the failings revealed here, there are many other questions concerning cases and whether and to what extent the PCR testing can really tell us what we need to know, to what degree did the misclassification problem affect death attribution, and so much more. It seems that with each month that has gone by, what seemed to be these beautiful pictures of reality have faded into a murky data quagmire in which we don’t know what is real and what is not. And ever more, the CDC itself has urged us to ignore what we do see (VAERS data, for example).

Dr. Robert Malone makes an interesting point. If a scientist at a university or a lab is found to have deliberately buried relevant data because they contradict a preset conclusion, the results are professional ruin. The CDC, however, has legal privileges that allows it to get away with actions that would otherwise be considered fraud in academia.

The dirty details of the fraud in Pfizer clinical trials

Pfizer's COVID Vaccine | Science-Based MedicinePfizer Data Manipulation- A Piece of the Puzzle

Brook Jackson is a clinical trial researcher based out of Texas. Back in September 2020, Brook was hired to work as a Regional Director at two out of three clinical trial sites in Texas for Pfizer’s Phase III mRNA vaccine. Ventavia is the company to which Pfizer outsourced the trials, and the company that hired Brook.

By week 3 of her employment, Brook had witnessed so many inexcusable mishaps and protocols being broken that she felt there was no option other than documenting and reporting what she was witnessing. What unfolded during her short time at Ventavia and in the months that followed is truly mind-blowing. I’ll try to capture it here, based on an interview she did yesterday with Daniel Horowitz.

The environment was one of immense pressure. Pfizer was in the race of a lifetime to be the first to market a safe and effective vaccine for Covid-19. The companies they hired out to run clinical trials were paid per patient they enrolled, and quickly. There were 1200 patients enrolled in Brook’s arm of the trial, and the team was so understaffed that it would have been impossible for the patients to all be attended to safely and properly.

After reporting the mishaps to her direct managers multiple times, and witnessing them attempting to conceal the issues rather than deal with them, Brook filed an official report with the FDA. Six hours later, she received a phone call from Ventavia saying that she was fired. Brook contacted an attorney and filed a lawsuit against Pfizer and Ventavia, which led to the case being sealed from the public for over a year and forbade Brook to speak publicly. The case has recently become unsealed, and is making its way through the courts which brings us to the list of her findings and reports (All of her public sources and documentation of evidence to support these claims are linked below):

The temperature at which the vials of the vaccine were being kept was out of safe range for months. This should have disqualified all vaccines that were stored there.Family members of Ventavia employees were enrolled in the study, which is a clear conflict of interest regarding biased data reporting. The CEO of Ventavia and her entire family were enrolled in the study. We don’t know that they didn’t choose to be in the vaccine arm of the trial. How can they accurately report side effects? The patients became unblinded prematurely, contaminating the data.Ventavia was severely understaffed. There were 5 exam rooms, 4-5 staff members, and 40 + patients per day. It’s impossible to perform protocol properly in those conditions. The understaffing created an environment where it was easy and almost necessary to fabricate and falsify data. There was so much pressure that if there was a piece of data missing from a patient file, they would “just write something” to get the reports moving along. The rush to get through trials was so severe from Pfizer and Ventavia they pushed hard to enroll as many ppl as they could as fast as possible. Many unqualified participants were enrolled. The already understaffed team was also underqualified and they were not properly trained regarding vaccine storage and administration protocol. The receptionist at the clinic was tasked as the one person who dealt with the patients who received placebos and injected them. Brooke looked into her background and she had zero medical experience. Zero. Before Ventavia, she worked at a restaurant. Now she’s responsible for injecting people and holding critical trial data.At the second location as well, the vaccinator who was in charge of the unblinding had zero protocol training. Brooke discovered this after she had already injected an unknown amount of people.Needles were not properly disposed of and were found lying out in the open. It’s dangerous to have used needles around the employees and patients.A monitor came to review data and found that there was a death at the clinic that had not been reported to the proper channels. That’s inexcusable. If a patient receives an injection and dies within the time frame of the study, it is an absolute expectation that the death is to be reported to the company immediately. The staff members were not properly trained on the appropriate dilution ratio of the vaccine. Brook witnessed a variety of dilution levels due to unqualified and untrained workers.Informed Consent: The informed consent document is 26 pages of information about the trial, the vaccine, and the virus. Patients were being “informed” about the documents by a call center team. When Brooke intervened and spoke to patients herself, she realized that they were NOT properly educated, and there had been no informed consent. It took her 2 hours to explain everything to each patient, and she witnessed that the other patients had not had the courtesy of those explanations. Hundreds of trial patients were NOT appropriately informed. In the patient documents, there were missing signatures and missing dates. When Brook brought this to the attention of her supervisors, they told her to make a list of the issues and hand it in. She later discovered that they had filled in the dates and signed on behalf of patients rather than reaching out to the patient to do it themselves. There are 153 Ventavia clinical site locations in the US. Brooke worked at 2 Texas locations. Since going public, five other Ventavia employees have approached her privately to report misconduct as well.

In order for the negotiations to begin, Ukraine will have to guarantee that its territory will be neutral and free of weapons. If these conditions are met, Russia will conclude its operation.

On Friday, Russia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sergei Lavrov said his country has no purpose of occupying Ukraine and Moscow is ready to hold negotiations straight after the Ukrainian forces “lay down their arms.”

“Russia will ensure the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. We have suffered too much from Nazism, and the Ukrainian people suffered too much to just turn a blind eye to all this,” Lavrov said during a press conference.

“No one will abuse the Ukrainian soldiers, who can return to their families after ending hostilities,” Lavrov said, adding that his country has always been in favor of talks and there is still a chance for dialogue on Russia’s security concerns.

“We have always advocated a diplomatic solution. It was Russia that played a decisive role in laying a reliable foundation for a diplomatic solution, the Minsk agreements,” the minister said.

According to information released by the Kremlin on Friday, President Xi Jinping assured President Vladimir Putin that China respects the Russian actions in the Ukrainian crisis.

The Chinese president’s statements occurred during a telephone conversation that had a “constructive and friendly” character and showed the coincidence of positions of the two countries regarding the main issues on the international agenda.

“The Russian president informed the Chinese president in detail about the reasons for his decision to recognize the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics and to carry out a special military operation aimed at protecting the civilian population from genocide and ensuring the demilitarization and denazification of the Ukrainian state,” the Kremlin said.

Endless Booster Shots Can Lead to ‘Dead Zone’ and Increased Risk of Autoimmune Disease

Repeated booster shots may lead to a “death zone.”

By  Dr. Joseph Mercola

Endless COVID-19 booster shots are being presented as the solution to the pandemic, as repeated injections increase the level of antibodies in your body — but artificially inflated antibodies signal to your body that you’re always infected, and the resulting immune response could prove to be detrimental to your health.

Story at-a-glance:Artificially inflated antibodies caused by repeated booster shots signal to your body that you’re always infected, and the resulting immune response could prove to be detrimental to your health.Repeated booster shots may lead to a “death zone,” accelerating the development of autoimmune conditions such as Parkinson’s, Kawasaki disease and multiple sclerosis.Molecular mimicry may be to blame for autoimmune conditions caused by COVID-19 shots — there are often significant similarities between elements in the vaccine and human proteins, which can lead to immune cross-reactivity.Case reports suggest that COVID-19 shots may trigger vaccine-induced immune-mediated and autoimmune hepatitis, and concern is growing that repeated booster shots will only worsen outcomes.

Endless COVID-19 booster shots are being presented as the solution to the pandemic, as repeated injections increase the level of antibodies in your body.

In December 2021, for instance, Moderna reported that their COVID-19 booster shot increased the level of antibodies by 37-fold, and when a full dose was given — the same amount used for the initial shots — antibody levels rose 83-fold.

Pfizer and BioNTech have also announced that their booster shots increase antibody levels, but to what end?

Artificially inflated antibodies signal to your body that you’re always infected, and the resulting immune response could prove to be detrimental to your health.

Such a condition can only lead to a “death zone,” accelerating the development of autoimmune conditions such as Parkinson’s, Kawasaki disease and multiple sclerosis, according to tech leader and COVID analyst Marc Girardot, who urges a retreat from the vaccination “death zone” before it’s too late.

Are boosters taking humans to the death zone?

Mountaineers are familiar with the “death zone,” which describes the top portion of the world’s tallest mountains — areas of such high altitude that oxygen is scarce, where humans can only survive for a matter of hours.

“The same principle applies to our immune system,” Girardot explains, referring to the intense response our bodies mount in response to infection.

The response includes a high fever to damage virions, T-cell elevations and increased antibody production to rid your body of “viral debris.” This is designed to be a temporary response; after the threat is neutralized, your body tamps down its immune response. Girardot states:

“Once the infection is gone, a regiment of sentinels is left in the mucus to guard the entrance for the remainder of the epidemic, a few roaming sentinels with lifelong memory are set, and the rest wanes back down to bring peace and balance. It’s called homeostasis. The fever dissipates. T-cells self-destruct rapidly. And antibodies wane progressively.”

This is by design, as a perpetual fever and high levels of antibodies keep your body in a dangerous state. Just as chronic stress — keeping your body in an extended state of “fight or flight mode” — increases disease risks, so, too, do permanently elevated levels of antibodies. Girardot details three reasons why:

“1. Too long a fever would end up breaking down all healthy cells, and so the remedy would be worse than the illness.

“2. Perpetual specialized T-cells are also dangerous as they can start off-target attacks of healthy cells (as often occurs with immune checkpoint blockade treatments against cancer), and would be like leaving your home filled with a battalion of armed soldiers with their guns loaded and pin-less hand-grenades.

“3. Finally, very high levels of antibodies with nowhere to go are also extremely dangerous. They can passively bind to receptors of healthy cells, and kickstart a cascade of autoimmune diseases. Land mining where you live.”

Decreased antibodies isn’t a measure of waning immunity

Remember, your immune system is designed to work in response to exposure to an infectious agent. Your adaptive immune system, specifically, generates antibodies that are used to fight pathogens that your body has previously encountered. During normal infections, high fever and temporary T-cell elevations, along with elevated antibodies to the infection, gradually dissipate.

[…]

There’s a cost to massive, artificially elevated antibodies

COVID-19 shots are poised for a perpetual cycle of ongoing booster shots every few months. After up to two doses of the initial shot, and a third booster already on the roster, a fourth booster is already being discussed, including by Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel, who said that the efficacy of the third shot is likely to decline over several months, necessitating another shot soon thereafter.

“Many politicians and vaccine manufacturers adamantly propose repeated injections, boosters every 3 or 4 months, as if waning antibodies were a sign of lost immunity,” Girardot said. “In reality, they are scapegoating the natural drop in antibodies. It is a smokescreen to hide their failure and the ineffectiveness of these intramuscular vaccines.”

The reality is, repeatedly, artificially inflating antibodies comes with a cost. It’s known, for instance, that certain autoimmune diseases are seen alongside high levels of antibodies. Vaccine-induced autoimmunity is a well-known phenomenon, and molecular mimicry may be to blame.

It occurs when similarities between different antigens confuse the immune system. There are often significant similarities between elements in the vaccine and human proteins, which can lead to immune cross-reactivity.

Following Invasion of Ukraine, Russia Ready to Negotiate

Russia ready to negotiate with Ukraine – Kremlin FILE PHOTO. © AFP / Natalia KOLESNIKOVA

RT

Moscow is willing to negotiate terms of surrender with Kiev regarding the ongoing Russian military offensive currently taking place in Ukraine, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.According to Peskov, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his preparedness to engage in discussions with his Ukrainian counterpart, with a focus on obtaining a guarantee of neutral status and the promise of no weapons on its territory.

These are terms that, according to Peskov, would enable the achievement of the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, and eliminate what Russia currently views as a threat to the security of its state and people.

“The president formulated his vision of what we would expect from Ukraine in order for the so-called ‘red-line’ problems to be resolved. This is neutral status, and this is a refusal to deploy weapons,” Peskov clarified.

The press secretary added that Putin would determine the timing of the negotiations, but gave assurances that Russia would only engage “if the leadership of Ukraine is ready to talk about it.”

“The operation has its goals – they must be achieved. The president said that all decisions have been made, and the goals will be achieved,” Peskov continued, suggesting that, if Kiev were to agree to meet the demands, the current military attack on Ukraine could be called off.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, Putin instigated a “special operation” in Ukraine, with the supposed aim of “securing the peace” in the breakaway Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics in the Donbass region.

The leaders of the republics have made claims in recent days of attacks on their territory by the Ukrainian army.

Throughout the course of Thursday, the operation has become a full-scale assault, with Ukrainian airports, military bases, and cities, including the capital Kiev, all being damaged in air strikes in an attempt by Russia to cripple any Ukrainian military response.

German Health Insurance Claims Show 31,254 Deaths Following COVID-19 Vaccines While Official Government Stats Report Only 2,255

by Brian Shilhavy
Editor, Health Impact News

The entire COVID-19 vaccine narrative continues to come apart at the seams as yet another media report was published today in Germany stating that a large German health insurance company analyzed data from 10.9 million insured individuals regarding injuries and fatalities following COVID-19 vaccines during the first half of 2021 and into the 3rd quarter which showed significantly higher numbers than what the German government has reported.

This follows news reports out of the U.S. this past weekend where it was revealed that the CDC, FDA, and NIH contained data about significant COVID-19 vaccine injuries and deaths that were not being reported to the public. See:

68,000% Increase in Strokes as FDA and NIH Secretly Study Reports of Neurological Injuries After COVID-19 Vaccines

CDC Withholding Data on COVID-19 Vaccines Because “They might be misinterpreted as the vaccines being ineffective” and “The figures would be misrepresented by anti-vaccine groups”

Andreas Schöfbeck of German health insurance company BKK Provita was interviewed by the German newspaper Welt, and stated (translated from German):

According to our calculations, we consider 400,000 visits to the doctor by our policyholders because of vaccination complications to be realistic to this day.

Extrapolated to the total population, this value would be 3 million.

The numbers that resulted from our analysis are very far away from the publicly announced numbers. It would be unethical not to talk about it.

While the original article at Welt is in German and apparently behind a paywall, it was reported on a German blog here, and then translated to English with commentary on a Substack column called “bad cattitude.”

Disclose.tv also covered it on their Twitter account, where they translated a letter sent by Andreas Schöfbeck, the German health insurance BKK board member, to the Paul-Ehrlich Institute, an agency of the German Federal Ministry of Health.

An Overview of the Civil War: The Bloodiest in US History

American Civil War: Commanders of the Western Theater

Episode 16: The End of War and of Slavery

A New History of the American South

Dr Edward Ayers (2018)

Film Review

Rather than describing specific battles, Ayers limits this lecture to a brief overview of the Civil War, beginning with the stalemate reached by 1862. By this point, Union ships controlled the entire coast along the periphery of the Confederacy. The latter, in turn, still controlled nearly all South’s productive farmland.

As the North pushed into Confederate territory, slaves fled their plantations to seek Union Army protection. Some Union officers returned slaves to their owners while others retained them as guides in unfamiliar Confederate territory. In August 1861, Congress passed a law classifying slaves crossing Union lines as “contraband of war” and banning their return to their owners. Instead they were housed in overcrowded, hastily constructed “contraband” camps, where they experienced tragically high mortality rates.

Meanwhile internal divisions in both North and South continued to hamper the war effort. While northern “Copperhead” Democrats openly opposed emancipation, Lincoln fought with other Republicans seeking to grant former slaves the right to enlist in the Union army. In April 1862, Washington DC officially ended slavery, issuing compensation to former slave owners.

In mid 1862 Lincoln pushed a law through Congress authorizing Union generals to confiscate or destroy southern plantations as. He also issued the Emancipation Proclamation, an Executive Order that took effect on January 1, 1863 that freed all slaves in Confederate states.

Convinced speculators were hoarding flour, in early 1863 poor southern women staged bread riots in Salisbury (North Carolina), Atlanta, Columbus and Augusta. After southern farmers rebelled against “impressment” of their crops by Confederate troops without adequate compensation, Confederate vice president Alexander Stephens openly lambasted the tyrannical policies of Jefferson Davis.

The Civil War is still the most costly US war ever, in terms of lives lost. The North lost 365,000 men to wounds and disease and the South (with a smaller population) 260,000. 37,000 Black men serving in the Union army died, and 10,000 Black men, women and children died in contraband camps.

By the end of the war, the southern economy was virtually destroyed, with many cities reduced to rabble, and many acres of farmland abandoned. In contrast, the northern economy was growing robustly with Lincoln’s greenbacks* spurring rapid expansion in business investment and manufacturing.

Congress passed the 13th Amendment (banning slavery in the US) in January 1865, though the war wouldn’t end until May. It would be ratified by 27 of the required 36 states by December.

With the formal status of former slaves uncertain, some former slave owners fled to Latin America, some chained them up to keep them from leaving and others let slaves continued to live in their cabins and work for wages or for a share of crops they produced.

The Freedmen’s Bureau, formed in March 1865 as a US government agency, dispensed free medicine, food and clothing to poor whites and blacks. It also created courts to settle disputes between landowners and former slaves, drew up contracts, and set up public schools.

Southern Blacks themselves were politically divided. More wealthy black teachers, ministers and artisans merely sought equality before the law and the right to vote. In contrast impoverished former slaves were mainly interested in acquiring their own land.

As Congress was in recess (until December 1865) when Vice-president Andrew Johnson assumed the presidency (following Lincoln’s assassination in April 1865) they had virtually no influence over his policies. Under the so-called Presidential Reconstruction program he launched he granted amnesty to former Confederate leaders who signed a loyalty oath, protecting them from seizure of their property and prosecution for treason. He made no provision for Blacks to vote and refused to intervene when former Confederate states enacted Black Codes restricting the rights of former slaves. While allowing them to marry, own (non-real estate) property and sue and be sued, these laws forbade them to change jobs, own or rent land, testify in court or practice certain occupations.

*Greenbacks were emergency paper currency Lincoln issued during the Civil War when both US and European banks refused to grant his government loans at a reasonable rate of interest.
