President’s Quest for Détente with Russia Continues Despite Fierce Opposition
By John V. Walsh | Dissident Voice | February 21, 2017
President Trump rose from the ashes of Mike Flynn at his press conference last Thursday. In a bravura performance, defiant and funny at times, the President took on the corporate media en masse.
It is a performance that should not be missed. You can savor both video and transcript at your leisure here.
The press
Trump: “Unfortunately, much of the media in Washington, D.C., along with New York, Los Angeles in particular, speaks not for the people, but for the special interests and for those profiting off a very, very obviously broken system. The press has become so dishonest that if we don’t talk about it, we are doing a tremendous disservice to the American people. Tremendous disservice. We have to talk to find out what’s going on, because the press honestly is out of control. The level of dishonesty is out of control.”
Sounds like what many “progressives” have been saying for a mighty long time, and it deserves resounding applause from them.
Trump: “And I’ll tell you what else I see. I see tone. You know the word ‘tone.’ The tone is such hatred. I’m really not a bad person, by the way. No, but the tone is such — I do get good ratings, you have to admit that — the tone is such hatred.”
And: “Now, I will say this. I watch it. I see it. I’m amazed by it. The public gets it, you know. Look, when I go to rallies, they turn around, they start screaming at CNN. They want to throw their placards at CNN. You know.”
The bias of the press against Trump is so obvious and heavy handed that no one can miss it. I asked one friend who is an avid and careful reader of the NYT whether he could name a single pro-Trump article over the last year. He could not. Does the press believe that the public are such fools that they cannot see this tone? This is but one more sign of the contempt that the clueless Elite have for the working stiff.
Russia and Putin
The most important point of the press conference was undoubtedly Trump’s refusal to back off one inch from his desire to “get along with Russia,” what some call New Détente or Détente 2.0. It is the most important, because tension between the two nuclear powers could well lead to war and nuclear exchange. For anti-warriors of every stripe Trump’s steadfastness was good news. The Flynn episode has not changed Trump’s resolve one iota.
Trump continued. Were he to denounce Russia and Putin, he instructed the press, it would be much easier for him politically. He would be hailed by the corporate press, the elitists of both Parties, the neocons, the Hillarycons and the entire foreign policy establishment, all of whom are itching for a fight, heedless that it might lead to a nuclear exchange. So Trump’s willingness to hold to this position is hardly opportunistic.
But he went farther. Trump let the press know that the atmosphere they are creating would make it difficult to negotiate with Putin, to defeat ISIS, or to bring an end to the crises in Ukraine or Syria nurtured by the US over the last six plus years. Why? Because he would have difficulty making concessions, giving as well as taking which any negotiation or deal demands. Any concession would trigger the charge that Trump is Putin’s puppet, the crazed mantra with which we are harangued daily and for which after all these many months there is not a shred of evidence. This is the very same point that Stephen F. Cohen, Emeritus Professor of Russian History at Princeton and NYU, often makes in his weekly discussions (Jan.25 episode especially) of U.S., Russia relations with John Batchelor on WABC.
Trump: “But I want to just tell you, the false reporting by the media, by you people, the false, horrible, fake reporting makes it much harder to make a deal with Russia. And probably Putin said ‘you know.’ He’s sitting behind his desk and he’s saying ‘you know, I see what’s going on in the United States, I follow it closely. It’s going to be impossible for President Trump to ever get along with Russia because of all the pressure he’s got with this fake story.’ OK? And that’s a shame because if we could get along with Russia — and by the way, China and Japan and everyone. If we could get along, it would be a positive thing, not a negative thing.” (Emphasis, jw).
And later, Trump: “But you know what? I want to do the right thing for the American people. And to be honest, secondarily, I want to do the right thing for the world.
If Russia and the United States actually got together and got along — and don’t forget, we’re a very powerful nuclear country and so are they. There’s no upside. We’re a very powerful nuclear country and so are they. I have been briefed. And I can tell you one thing about a briefing that we’re allowed to say because anybody that ever read the most basic book can say it, nuclear holocaust would be like no other. (Emphasis, jw)… They’re a very powerful nuclear country and so are we. If we have a good relationship with Russia, believe me, that’s a good thing, not a bad thing.”

Why Do The Media Dislike Donald Trump So Much?
Re-post From The Broken Elbow
Followers of this blog will know that I have considerable reservations about, not to say antipathy towards Donald J Trump, and not just because he likes to lampoon disabled journalists, of which I am one (although that now infamous incident involving Serge Kovaleski did open a revealing window into his mind).
I think he is a liar, a fraud and a con-man who is on the make for himself and his grotesque family and is prepared to ally himself with dangerous, under-rock lifeforms to advance his ambitions and will think nothing about lying to and betraying all those rust-belt types who voted for him thinking their long-lost jobs would return.
At the same time I do find the outrage of the US media and their cousins in Europe at Trump a bit hard to take. The outlets these journalists work for in large measure turned a blind eye in the 2000’s to a barrage of, and not-difficult-to-disprove, Presidential (and prime ministerial) lies, ranging from George W Bush’s fraudulent election to the wars in Iraq, Libya and Syria (the McClatchey Group being a distinguished exception regarding Iraq).
And they barely said a word in apology when the truth finally emerged (preferring instead to punish individual journalists while forgiving the managements which accepted, welcomed and trumpeted their stories on front pages).
Trump’s lies, which admittedly are more obviously lies and more crudely delivered that those of his predecessors, have the media in a ferment of protest and outrage.
I can’t help think there is a bit of snobbery – not to mention double standards – behind much of this aspect of anti-Trumpism. The man clearly hates the liberal media, he doesn’t read (some wonder if he can), watches cable TV endlessly, especially Fox News, tweets semi-literately and can barely put a coherent sentence together.
Part of the truth about the US media’s relations with Trump is that he is not one of them. Despite his alleged wealth and Manhattan ties, he really does come from the rust-belt. Obama, by contrast and despite his skin colour, was a Harvard man who probably lied as outrageously but somehow that was more acceptable.
So it is worth reading this Media Lens‘ critique of the BBC’s coverage of Trump’s extraordinary press conference of last Thursday via an interview with a British journalist called Peter Oborne.
Oborne, by the way is a former Daily Telegraph writer and is now a deputy editor for the equally right-wing Spectator magazine. Sometimes even reactionaries can be right (mind you, I can’t remember either The Telegraph or The Spectator subjecting the Iraqi casus belli to much scrutiny).

Trump: Expanding the Parameters of Permissible Debate
Lies Wars and Empire
By Michael Parenti (2007)
In this presentation, Michael Parenti focuses on the science of media manipulation and mass indoctrination. He makes his most important point at the end: mass indoctrination never works perfectly. Spontaneous skepticism tends to be a natural outcome of a steady diet of media propaganda. I suspect this healthy skepticism is a major reason why Trump’s attacks on the corporate media have been so popular – and why counterattacks by US intelligence and the mainstream media have been so savage.
Trump is the highest profile politician to ever publicly challenge the official version of 9-11, the job-killing effects of free trade treaties such as TPP and NAFTA, the threats to democratic process posed by investing power in a private central bank (the Federal Reserve) and the long term safety of America’s multiple vaccination regime in children.
Parenti begins with an explanation why, in most cases, peoples’ beliefs are totally impervious to facts. He reminds us that our perceptions are shaped by a number of factors beyond our control, particularly income, status, background assumptions and disinformation.
He maintains that what passes for objectivity in the mainstream media is really conformity of bias – nearly always in favor of corporate capitalism and the status quo. Owing to this emphasis on conformity, expressing a dissenting viewpoint viewed as a radical activity, mainly because it helps expose and expands the boundaries of permissible debate. Because the corporate media only allows an extremely narrow range of debate, you will never see a open discussion of evidence implicating the government in 9-11 or the JFK, Robert Kennedy or Martin Luther King assassinations.
This lecture examines numerous world events deliberately censored or distorted by the corporate media:
The war crimes trial of Slobodan Milosevic (who died under suspicious circumstances in prison in 2006).
The stolen 2004 election (in which election fraud in Ohio, New Mexico, Florida and Arizona wrongly awarded the electoral vote to Bush).*
The repeated claim that the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979 – the Afghan government requested assistance from the Soviets to restore order in the face of a major CIA destablization campaign.
Saddam Hussein’s 40-year role as a CIA asset in the coup overthrowing Iraqi prime minister Abd al-Karim Qasim and declaring war on Iran.

New Cannabis Patch Treats Fibromyalgia & Diabetic Nerve Pain
*
*
Two of the latest cannabis medical innovations were created by Cannabis Science, a U.S. company specialized in the development of cannabis-based medicine, particularly those meant for cancer treatment. Cannabis Science already has some products on the market in California, such as its “When Nature Meets Science” product line, which includes healing bombs, drops, and tinctures, all made with cannabis.
The company recently designed two new pain relieving medications for self-medicating patients with diabetic neuropathy nerve pain and fibromyalgia.
Over the past 100 years, cannabis has gone from being legal, to illegal, to entering a strange legal grey area in our society. The stigma surrounding cannabis has pushed people to believe that it?s a ?drug? that?s poor for your health, when in reality, it?s a plant that has incredible healing properties.
Cannabis can significantly help people suffering from anxiety or chronic pain, and can even kill cancer cells. Some of the more recent innovations using cannabis were two pain relieving patches created by Cannabis Science, designed for patients with fibromyalgia and diabetic nerve pain.
Medical Uses for Cannabis
Cannabis can and has been used for many years to treat a wide variety of illnesses including cancer. Cannabinoids refer to any of a group of related compounds that include cannabinol and the active constituents of cannabis.
Consuming cannabis activates cannabinoid receptors in the body, and the body itself creates compounds called endocannabinoids, which help to…

CIA Freezes Aid To Free Syrian Army
*

As Syrian President Bashar al Assad’s hold on western parts of Syria solidifies, the CIA is lessening its support of the Free Syrian Army (FSA). Officials familiar with the CIA-led program said the decision to freeze aid has nothing to do with US President Donald Trump replacing President Barack Obama, even though Trump has indicated skepticism about the nature of US support of rebels in the region, saying that the US should focus efforts on Daesh, not Assad.
from Sputnik International
As Syrian President Bashar al Assad’s hold on western parts of Syria solidifies, the CIA is lessening its support of the Free Syrian Army (FSA).
No military assistance will be delivered to the FSA by the CIA “until matters are organized,” a source on the ground in Syria told Reuters. Specifically, FSA commanders said that the agency could be worried that, with growing jihadist assaults across the region, including the mass execution of up to 200 last week, the CIA is wary of putting cash and weapons into the hands of combatants that could then be given to regional terrorists.
The FSA will continue to receive aid, however, from nations that receive weapons from the US and…

ALERT: GMO apples and potatoes scheduled to hit store this month
*
*
US consumers should be aware that (unlabeled) GMO apples and potatoes are scheduled to hit your grocery store shelves this month. Because they are unlabeled, the safest course is to limit yourself to apples and potatoes that are certified organic, grown by a local farmer you know and trust, or ones you have grown yourself.
YOUR PERCEPTION IS NOT REALITY
Conscious consumers should be aware that GMO apples and potatoes are scheduled to hit your grocery store shelves this month.
According to Healthline mid-west produce departments will be the first to push the poisonous apple.
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are back in the news.
That’s because some genetically modified produce is heading for store shelves.
GMO apples and potatoes will be in Midwest produce departments this month.
It’s the start of a 2017 rollout of these types of items. And should provide some food for grocery aisle debate.
GMOs are created in a laboratory when genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal.
The foreign genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals, or even humans.
Now GMO apples and potatoes will be in grocery store produce bins.
A GMO apple looks like any other except for…

Chlorine, Cancer, and Heart Disease

Adding chlorine to drinking water is a practice that began in the late 1800s, and by 1904 this was the standard in water treatment. For the most part, this process is still implemented today. Unfortunately, chlorine isn’t used because it’s the safest or most effective means of disinfection — it’s just the cheapest.

In spite of all our technological advances, we essentially still pour bleach in our water before we drink it. The long-term effects of chlorinated drinking water have just recently being recognized. Past research has indicated it may be a contributor to cancer; however, there is no conclusive data to replicate these findings. [1]
History of Chlorine Danger
Dr. Joseph Price wrote a highly controversial book in the late sixties titled Coronaries/Cholesterol/Chlorine and concluded that the basic cause of atherosclerosis and resulting entities such as heart attacks…

Class Conflict in the Suffragette Movement
Suffragettes: The Fight for Votes for Women
Edited by Joyce Marlow
Virago Press (2000)
Book Review
This is a somewhat unconventional account of the 100 year battle British women fought to win the vote. As it relies on letters, diaries and newspaper accounts, it brings to light the individual personalities of various suffragette leaders and men who supported them. It also highlights interpersonal and political conflict that arose in the movement.
Much of the dissension arose because of class differences – often the solidly upper middle class leadership was out of touch with the thinking and needs of working women. There were also splits between women who engaged in property destruction (window breaking, fire setting and bombings) and those who advocated non-violence.
Prior to finding this book I was unaware of Queen Victoria’s absolute opposition to equal rights for women, nor the brutal and punitive forced nasogastric feeding imposed on suffragettes in prison. In their struggle to be recognized as political prisoners (and for general improvements in prison conditions), the women frequently engaged in hunger strikes when they were arrested.
It would be 1928 before British women finally won the right to vote on the same basis as men (at age 21). The Franchise Bill they fought for (and won) in 1918 only allowed women to vote when they reached age 30.
