Game of Thrones Musings #1 -- Tryion Targaryen?
Just how many of those fire breathing Targaryens are there anyway?
References: NOVEL: "The World of Ice and Fire; The Untold History of Westeros and The Games Thrones," by George RR Martin, Elio M. Garcia, Jr., and Linda Antonsson, Bantam Books, ISBN: 978-0-553-80544-4, Year published: 2014.

INTRODUCTION
My husband told me about Game of Thrones around the time it was announced the series had just started filming for HBO. He said I would love it. It was "soap opera-y," (and I enjoyed a good soap opera when I was a young girl) and no topic was off limits. There was incest, violence, and dragons.
I said okay and waited for S1 to come out. Curious, I turned on TV watched the 1st ever episode when it came out and sure enough, I was hooked. Since, I have read the 1st 3 books in the series, Game of Thrones, Clash of Kings, and Storm of Swords.
My favorite character in this series, without hesitation is Daenerys, and I knew right away we were on a journey with her. In Episode 1, we were seeing her at a point in her life when she was young and embarking on her destiny. What was going to come was to shape her life for better or worse. And I wanted a to have a horse in Daenerys' khalasar.
FIRE AND ICE -- OBSERVATIONS
Immediately what caught my attention was the "ice and fire" contrast. Like "black and white," "ice and fire" in this story represent good and evil. And obviously, the Targaryens and their dragons represent "fire." Fire is light. Light is white. White is good.
Mind you, not all Targaryens are good. They're human with human flaws, (and I would say due to their incest) but they do have traits, if mastered, would make them harbingers of "fire."
So what do we know about the Targaryens?
OF DRAGONS AND TARGARYENS:
According to "The World of Fire and Ice, and Untold History of Westros and Game of Thrones," (full reference is listed above) The Targaryens were just one of many dragonlord families who lived in Valyria on the western half of Essos.
The Valyrians established a westernmost outpost called "Dragonstone" 200 years before the "Doom."
The Targaryens were of pure Valyrian blood and possessed an ancient lineage. 12 years before the Doom, Aenar Targaryen sold his holdings and moved his family to Dragonstone. Thus, the Targaryens were the ONLY dragonlords to escape the "Doom."
Page: 33 : "It had long been the custom amongst the dragonlords of Valyria to wed brother to sister to keep the bloodline pure."
Per Game of Thrones Wiki: Generations of inbreeding have preserved in the Targaryen bloodline, the classic Valyarian features of silver white hair and pale, white skin. This inbreeding retained the ability to successfully bond and ride with the dragons. Targaryens are tolerant of extreme heat and high temperatures.
"Half the Targaryens went mad, didn't they? What's the saying? Every time a Targaryen is born, the gods flip a coin?" - Cersei Lannister. (Side note: And we've seen good and bad, the "mad" king Aerys, Viserys, the Begger King, Rhaegar, the noble older brother, and Daenerys.)
Jorah Mormont , in service to Daenerys once told her she was more like her brother "Rhaegar" (good Targaryen) then her brother, Viserys. (bad Targaryen)
THE "MAD" KING AERYS
This Targaryen is Daenerys' father. According to "The Untold History," Aerys inherited the Throne when he was 18. His wife and sister, Rhaella, quickly had their first son, Rhaegar.
Upon coming to the throne, Aerys named Tywin Lannister his "Hand." Aerys and Tywin had known each other since they were children and were good friends.
As Aerys grew older and his reign longer, he grew increasingly "erratic."
Tywin Lannister married his cousin, Joanna Lannister after being "Hand" for a year. She served as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Rhaella. Tywin and Joanna knew each other since they were children. He adored her.
Page 225 of "The Untold History:" "Sadly, the the marriage between Aerys Targaryen and his sister, Rhaella, was not as happy, and she turned a blind eye to most of the king's infidelities, though the queen did not approve of his "turning my ladies into his whores" (Joanna Lannister was not the first lady to be dismissed abruptly from Her Grace's service, nor was she the last).
Over the course of 13 years, the Queen, Rhaella, miscarried or had stillborn children.
Page 225 from "The Untold History:" "It has been reliably reported, however, that King Aerys took unwonted liberties with Lady Joanna's person during her bedding ceremony, to Tywin's displeasure. " Not long thereafter, she was dismissed from the Queen's service.
When Cersei and Jaime were 6 they visited the king's court at King's Landing. The King, "in his cups," asked if the twins had ruined her breasts. Joanna was humiliated, Tywin, tried to give up his position as Hand. Aerys refused to accept it.
In 272 AC, Aerys, Tywin, Joanna, and their families attended the Anniversary Tourney. In 273 AC, Tyrion is born.
It is widely speculated that Tyrion is the product of an "affair" between Aerys and Joanna. -- And Tywin suspected it. Why else would he treat Tyrion so poorly?
According to "The Untold History," eventually Aerys gives up his mistresses and vows to be true to his Queen. When he does this, Viserys and Daenerys are born to him and Rhaella.
WHO'S YOUR BROTHER? OR NEPHEW? OR SISTER?
Without a doubt Daenerys is a Targaryen. Jon Snow is Daenerys' nephew, the son of her older brother, Rhaegar, and Lyanna Stark, making him a Targaryen, comfirmed by HBO. (That's a whole other musing) Tyrion Lannister just might be a Targaryen, born out of an "affair" between Aerys and Joanna Lannister.
So let's hear your musings: Is Tyrion really a Targaryen?

Book Review: The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan
Book Review for: The Sword of Summer(Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard)Written by: Rick RiordanPublished by: Disney/HyperionISNB: 978-148476035-2
4.5 Stars
I read: the hardback
An incredible escape to another world!
Riordan pens an enthralling new adventure involving the Gods of Asgard with “The Sword of Summer.” Our hero is Magnus Chase. After retrieving the sword of Summer from the Charles River, he’s promptly killed by Surt, the fire god. Thankfully, a Valkyrie named Sam, saves him and takes him to Valhalla where he becomes one of Odin’s soldiers known as the Einherjar.
Trouble is not far behind. Sam is expelled from the Valkyrie, and Magnus must re-find the Sword of Summer. Complicating matters is Fenris Wolf who is rumored to bring about Ragnarok in 9 days. Can Magnus and his friends, Sam, Blitz, and Hearth find the sword and save the 9 worlds from Ragnarok?
Riordan’s writing style is easy to read and engages the reader. His characters are likable and endearing. Magnus is brave in the face of danger, and loyal to his friends. There are plenty of villains who bring out the humanity of Magnus and his friends. The plot is fast paced, keeping young readers turning the pages.
The best character of the book is Sumarbrander – the Sword of Summer – who has a personality all his own.
Overall, “The Sword of Summer,” is a story with great characters, great action, and great appeal. The ending is satisfying and leaves the reader wanting to find out more about Magnus and his friends. I recommend this book for 10 years and older. A breathtaking read that will resonate long after the reader has finished.

Camping in the California Redwoods
Today I thought I'd share some pictures with you from my vacation at Jedidiah Smith State Park. This state park is home to Redwoods trees. It's about 3 miles outside of Crescent City, CA. Crescent City is on the border between CA and Oregon. It's also on the coast of California. The climate is moderate, not to hot, not too cool. The majority of days start off with a marine layer that burns off as day go. The climate is perfect for the growth of Redwood Forests.
We went ahead and pitched out tent. We use cots to sleep on. Personally, I find cots better to sleep on than using an air mattress. They may be a bit more bulkier to transport, but for me it's worth it. We went in mid June this year, and it was a bit on the cooler side. Temps were in the 50's and 60's, so we always wearing a sweatjacket and pants.
What's camp without a campfire, right? Here's a picture of our campfire. Behind it is our charcoal grill. They got a lot of use!
Here is Joe taking his Jr. Ranger oath. They gave him a pin that he wore everywhere he went!
Here is selfie with me and "Boy Scout Tree." Boy Scout Tree is a Huge Redwood. Actually it's 2 redwoods who fused together. It's a 3 mile hike out to the tree and 3 miles back. It's called Boy Scout tree because it was the boy scouts who discovered the tree in the 1940's when they were doing trail maintenance.
Here's a picture of our little campsite. Our tent is in the background. A huge redwood log that fell down is on the left. What I really liked about this campground is that you were surrounded by redwoods. It gave you a sense of privacy that we didn't have in other camps. The bathrooms were flush tiolets and they had coin showers. The part itself was well kept up.
Here's a picture of the lighthouse in Crescent City. It's called Battery Point. You can only access it during low tide. When high tide comes in, it fills up the middle and cuts off the island from the main land.
Here's a bunch of redwoods on the the way to Boy Scout Tree.
I hope you enjoyed my pictures of the redwoods. It's a good 12 hour drive so it takes us 2 days to get there. Crescent City has a walmart, a movie theatre and plenty of places to eat if you need something. We took several hikes when we visited, the best hike being out to Boy Scout Tree. There is a river nearby, but since it was so cold, we didn't go in.

ENJOY THIS EXCERPT:
Brattleboro, VT, setting for the Faberge SecretShe bit her lower lip. If she didn't take a chance now, would her life be filled with what- ifs and regrets? Yes, John had hurt her, but she was still alive. Dare she believe in romance again?Dimitri paused next to her room, beside the door."If you have the time..." she began, knowing it was now or never. "And if you don't have to go back to Russia right away, I'd be honored to have you share Christmas with my family.""I'd be happy to." His gaze was as soft as a caress. He reached out and tucked a stray tendril of hair behind her ear. Then slowly, he curved his hand around the nape of her neck and moved closer so there was no space between them.Their lips skirted each other's, teasing, tempting... until Dimitri's mouth finally captured hers in a drugging kiss. His lips were firm and persuasive. He smelled of soap and sandalwood. Something intense flared within her, and she fisted her hands around the lapels of his coat. Her body betrayed her desire. His erection pressed against her thigh. All of a sudden, an all-crushing fear consumed her. He was hard for her. It was too soon, too fast. She broke the kiss and pushed him away."Elise--" Dimitri began.
"Umph!"
Elise's heart jumped. She swung around and looked at the door.
It stood ajar.
"Lucy!" Elise forgot all about Dimitri's kiss and rushed inside with him right behind her.Concern spiked within her the second she saw Lucy.
Her friend's hands and feet were tied to a chair, and a gag was in her mouth. The roomhad been trashed. Their suitcases had been turned over; their clothes and books tossed haphazardly about.Fear knotted inside Elise. She rushed to the chair and took off Lucy's gag. Dimitri untied the knots at Lucy's feet, concern for her friend evident in his eyes. Elise was thrilled that Dimitri had helped her with no hesitation or reservations."What happened?" Elise asked. "Who did this?""They were looking for the egg," Lucy said. She glanced at Dimitri, but instead of her earlier resistance to him, gratefulness filled her gaze.Dimitri froze and glanced up, his stare drilling into Elise. "Egg? A Faberge egg?"Elise loosened one of the ropes around Lucy's hand and looked at Dimitri, perplexed. "What do you know about Faberge eggs?"He muttered something in Russian, finished untying the knot around Lucy's other ankle, and stood, straightening his shoulders."That's what I lost. What I've been looking for -- my Faberge egg."BUY LINKS: AMAZON KINDLE:http://www.amazon.com/The-Faberge-Secret-ebook/dp/B006LTE2ZS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324310728&sr=8-1B&N NOOK:http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-f... Book Review for: Killing the Rising Sun by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard
Book Review for: Killing the Rising SunWritten by: Bill O’Reilly and Martin DugardPublished by: Henry HoltISBN: 978-1627790635I read: the ebook
4 Stars
Recommended for: 12 years and older, history lovers
Engrossing!
O’Reilly and Dugard pen an engaging novel about the end of World War II in the Pacific with “Killing the Rising Sun.” The Japanese are resilient, courageous, and willing to fight to their last breath to win World War II. However, in the early months of 1945, it becomes apparent that the Japanese cannot win the war. Determined, they will defend every bit of land they possess.
Under orders from FDR, the Americans strive to build the atomic bomb. Known as “The Manhattan Project,” this devastating weapon might be the only leverage to get Japan to agree to unconditional surrender.
O’Reilly and Dugard’s writing style is easy to read. They relate the personal stories of not only the major players including FDR, Truman, and Douglas McArthur, but also the soldiers who fought for freedom. Historical facts, long forgotten, will surprise the reader.
The title, “Killing the Rising Sun,” is symbolic in that Japan as a country, known as the ‘rising sun’ had to be defeated in order to be reborn again as the nation it is today.
O’Reilly and Dugard deliver another fascinating read in their “killing” series. The facts will keep readers turning the pages. Engaging, engrossing, and suspenseful, this one “killing” that will resonate long after it’s finished.
Comments: While I'm NOT a fan of O'Reilly, not in the least, I do enjoy his "Killing" series. Which "Killing" book have you read that's been your favorite so far?

Adventures in Strawberry Land
Hello Night Owls,
Popping in for a bit to share some pics from the Strawberry Festival. It was held back in May, I want to say 20-21, but it's always the 3rd weekend of May. It's been a while, but I love to go every year. It's held in Oxnard, CA and every year the event keeps getting bigger. I remember the first year I went, the arts and crafts were held on the grass at Oxnard College but now they shut down the adjacent street and hold the arts and crafts there. My, how things have changed!
This weekend the weather was great. It wasn't too hot, but then we went after work. We got there around 430 pm and closed the place down at 6. Tip: Go later on in the day. It wasn't as crowded during this time as it usually is, (as we've gone earlier in the past) and it was a lot cooler.
Here are some typical food booths. Of course, I'm a sucker for the garlic fries, but we got calamari and I spilt a Philly cheesesteak with Andrew. Joe is picky so I'm sure we got him chicken nuggets. They also sell Strawberry nachos, Strawberry beer, and Straweberry tacos.
The boys drinking their strawberry smoothies, 2017. Smoothies are the best part of the Strawberry Festival.
Posting next to all the Strawberry sellers. Every year the strawberries are always fresh and tasty. You never get a bad strawberry at the festival. They have shortcake making contests. Unfortunately, due to time, I missed visiting "Strawberry Shortcake" this year.
This is a picture of the boys drinking smoothies from 2013. Boy have they changed! They've certaintly gotten bigger.
Here is me with my gratitious basket of strawberries. We can't eat them fast enough when we get come. I'm wearing the Angels hat because it's red and I wanted something red for the festival.
Thanks for hanging out with me at the festival. Sorry I'm late. If you get a chance, check out my Christmas story, Mr. Christmas Elf, for a little Christmas in July. It's 99 cents and will be going away at the end of August. Now is the time to get it!
BLURB:
Jules' Christmas list is looking pretty pathetic. She needs a new muffler for her car and a hundred dollars for her root canal. Her niece is asking for an iPad, but all Jules can afford is a Barbie doll. The peppermint on the top? Her boyfriend dumps her in a text message.
Jules could use a little Christmas magic, so when Elvis pops up claiming that he was sent by Santa to fill her Christmas list, all she has to do is believe – in the magic the season has to offer.

Book Review: Explosive 18 by Janet Ivanovich
Book Review for: Explosive EighteenWritten by: Janet EvanovichBantam BooksISBN: 978-0-345-52771-4
4 Stars
I read: The hardback
An explosive “whodunit”
Recommended for readers 13 years or older
Evanovich pens a crafty tale full of suspense, danger, with a pinch of cozy mystery with “Explosive Eighteen.”
On the way back from Hawaii, Stephanie picks up a coded photograph. Not thinking much of it, she throws it out. Then the fun begins. The FBI, the fake FBI, a hairdresser named Brenda, and a crazy hitman called “Razzle Dazzle” wants it. Stephanie still has skips to catch so she can pay the bills. Lula drinks a love potion and falls in love with one of the skips. Then there’s Joyce – Stephanie’s evil nemesis, who insists on staying with Stephanie when she’s convinced someone is out to get her. Complicating matters are Ranger and Morelli. The vordu may be gone, but both men want her. Can Stephanie avoid the fake FBI, elude Razzle Dazzle, and get the info she needs from Brenda the hairdresser before her car, her home, or her life blow up again?
Evanovich’s writing style is easy to read. Her characterization is spot on with a great supporting cast that includes Lula, Connie, and Grandma Mazur. It’s the people around Stephanie who give the story heart. The plot builds nicely, but the reveal is a bit convoluted, and I was left saying ‘what just happened?’
Overall, “Explosive Eighteen” is an entertaining story that will make the reader laugh, groan in frustration, and keep them turning the pages to find out what happens next.
Question: Who is your favorite character in the Stephanie Plum series?

First, I'd like to apologize for being on "hiatus" for a couple of months. All I can say is that real life, work, and scouting got in the way.
Since February, I've been very busy doing scouting things. Here's what I've been up to:
Exploring Trains with my Cub Scouts
Marching in the 4th of July with my Cub Scouts
Backpacking with my Boy Scouts
Buying Strawberries at the Strawberry Festival
Unfortunately, I've had a tough time trying to keep up with my emails. One BIG change that is coming up is that Victory Tales Press has closed shop any my 99 cent titles will revert back to me, so I'll be looking for a new publisher for them soon.
I haven't had much time to write, either. I have written a couple of "flash" fictions and poetry which you can find on my Writing.com account at: http://www.writing.com/authors/sgcardin
Hopefully, I'll be able to start up writing soon, as I really miss it.
The big thing about today is that it's NATIONAL FRENCH FRY DAY!! I love fast food fries. Not many deals for French Fry day though, but if you download the McDonalds App, you can get free med fries on Friday through September.
So, I just gotta ask: What Fast Food Chain has the best French Fries?
PICK THIS UP: Journey of the Heart. This 99 cent summer read is here through August.
BLURB:James returns to his home in California after World War II only to find out he's lost his farm. His way of life gone, James becomes a journeyman, selling Bibles, looking for a sense of purpose.
Rachel Santori's winery is in trouble. She's looking for someone to trust. When Rachel meets James, she can't deny how he penetrates her soul with his long, lonely looks.
Can James find a sense of belonging at Rachel's winery? Can love mend both their weary hearts?

2.99 Steampunk Romance: A Gentleman and a Rogue #kindledeal
GOLD Winner - 2013 Reader's Favorite Contest in Romance: Historical
BLURB: Lady Keira Russell is destined to bring compressed natural gas to Britain. Her inner courage and mental toughness rarely falter – except when Prince Edmund Windsor is involved.
Edmund of Wales is from the future. His last jaunt through history muffed up the time line. Now, he's here to set it straight and win Keira's heart. For Keira, if it isn't one obstacle, it's another. Queen Victoria has sponsored a competition to find a cleaner fuel source than coal. Keira's father is trying to build a windmill and the Ridgecrofts are working with gasoline. Then there's Edmund, whose sensual kisses and heated stares distract her down to her bones.Keira has a choice: trust Edmund's notorious mischief-making or put her faith in Queen Victoria to make the right decision, but if Keira makes the wrong choice, the future of Great Britain will be changed forever.
BOOK TRAILER For Book 1, Victorian Scoundrel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IUYj2...
ENJOY THIS EXCERPT:
Keira stepped forward and stood next to Edmund. With a gentle touch, she placed her hand on Edmund's elbow. Pride swelled through him. He wasn't quite sure what to do next, but he needed to put Jonas on notice concerning Keira.
Jonas nodded, acknowledging Keira. A new respect grew in his eyes and Edmund scowled. No way in Hell would he allow Jonas near his woman.
"You are a rogue, Mr. Byron," said Keira.
He chuckled. "Be thankful I'm not a scoundrel like Mr. Windsor. Now, I suggest you and the Windsors leave this room."
"Not until you tell me why." Keira's voice was firm.
"Why, what?"
"Why my father? This time? Why wind?"
Jonas cocked his head to the side and an amused little grin crossed his face. Edmund
wanted to smack that expression clean into next week. Instead, he gritted his teeth.
"It was His Royal Highness who piqued my curiosity when he asked me for my help with
the time traveling machine."
