Pakistan v England: first men’s cricket Test, day two – live
89th over: Pakistan 334-4 (Saud 40, Naseem 1) While Atkinson went round the wicket to the left-hand Saud, Woakes is bowling over the wicket with two slips and two men on the drive – one at short extra, one at short mid-off.
When he takes a single off the first ball, the flirtation of the outside edge resumes. Naseem is beaten by a jaffa and nods respectfully down the pitch. Woakes has bowled really well with the second new ball: 4-2-5-1 are his figures.

Pakistan v England: first men’s cricket Test, day one – as it happened
Shan Masood’s brilliant 151 helped Pakistan reach 328-4, but England fought back impressively in the final session
From our man in Multan
There are an extraordinary number of kites circling, swooping and settling on the outfield as I write. They might not quite outnumber spectators but there’s not much in it. We rarely get more than a scattering of pigeons in England - if the match between the nation’s cricket teams was preceded by one between their outfield avians it would be a short and extremely bloody battle. Anyway, here are the ticket prices for this series. Lord’s it ain’t.

Read Barney Ronay on, well, Euston station
78 min: Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool The leaders are still ahead thanks to Diogo Jota’s early goal, but their goalkeeper Alisson has just gone off with what looks like a hamstring injury. You can follow the rest of the game with Scott Murray.

Guardiola prickly on future; Fifa transfer rules break law: football news – as it happened
The transfer rules of world football’s governing body Fifa go against EU laws, according to a court ruling on a case linked to Lassana Diarra
Diarra’s lawyers are claiming a big win.
We await the full verdict. The devil, as always, will be in the detail.

“The day the world changed, yeah?” So said honorary Guardianista Nathan Barley as he flaunted his Geek Pie haircut on the streets of east London. The world didn’t change, it just got more like Nathan Barley. But every now and then there is a date of historic significance: such as 15 December 1995, when Jean-Marc Bosman won his case against Uefa and changed football’s transfer market forever. It’s not yet clear whether 4 October 2024 is the day the world changed or simply the day Preston striker Milutin Osmajic was given an eight-match ban after mistaking a Blackburn player for a sausage roll. We’re referring, as you jolly well know, to former Chelsea and Arsenal water carrier Lassana Diarra’s case against Fifa.
This week will mark the seventh game on the trot that Manchester United’s game will be the live on TV in the UK. I didn’t realise my Sky subscription included a season ticket to that ridiculous club” – Phil Aston.
Re: Karim Adeyemi saying his ‘wife made broccoli’ (yesterday’s Quote of the Day). How do you ‘make’ broccoli? Can somebody please post the recipe?” – Jarrod Prosser (and others).
I hope this furore about the non-prizes (Football Daily letters passim) doesn’t end in chaos, with winners returning their non-prizes. I, for one, will be keeping mine. They have pride of place in my otherwise empty trophy cabinet” – Bernard Clark.

Dortmund 7-1 Celtic, Slovan Bratislava 0-4 Manchester City: Champions League – as it happened
Celtic were marmalised in Germany, Manchester City cruised to victory and Leverkusen held on to beat Milan
Breaking news that has nothing whatsoever to do with the Champions League or any European competition because the ban would only have applied to domestic games.

Australia beat England by 49 runs (DLS) to win fifth men’s ODI and series – as it happened
England collapsed after a spectacular start with the bat as Australia won the ODI series decider on a rainy day in Bristol
2nd over: England 17-0 (Salt 16, Duckett 1) Ben Duckett gets off the mark less flamboyantly, with a nudge to leg for a single off Hazlewood. Salt is beaten again, perilously close to the off bail, as Hazlewood finds a classic length and some movement off the seam. But Salt hits back with a lofted square drive. He already has four fours, which is one more than ten of the Aussies managed at Lord’s between them (Head four, the rest three).
1st over: England 12-0 (Salt 12, Duckett 0) Well, well. Salt plays another cracking cover drive off the last ball, and in the middle he guides the ball past the slips. So this over looks like a triumph for England. But the guide was jammy – Salt seemed to be pulling the bat away – and he also played and missed, twice. So honours were actually even, whatever the scoreboard has to say.

Wolves 1-2 Liverpool: Premier League – as it happened
Liverpool go top of the table after Ibrahima Konaté’s header and Mohamed Salah’s penalty settled a scruffy game
“Cold Trigger,” writes Niall Mullen. It took me a second but I got it in the end.
“Please continue to express your pleasure in Raul Jimenez’s return to form,” says Richard Hirst. “It was clearly your encouragement which led to him scoring the winner for us. Top six - woooo!”

Anthony Gordon’s penalty gave Newcastle a deserved draw after Josko Gvardiol struck for City
2 min Schar sprays a terrific long pass out to Trippier, who loses Gvardiol on the edge of the area. Ederson comes out to dive at his feet.
1 min Peep peep! Newcastle kick off from left to right as we watch, and Harvey Barnes has a shot blocked inside 25 seconds.
