Phoenix Zoo welcomed the birth of a tiny (compared to his dad Ralph that is!) Galapagos Tortoise in late July. Proud parents Ralph and Mary have been at the zoo since before it even opened (50 years!). This is their 13th hatchling over their tenure at the zoo, and the first one for the pair since 2001. The newest addition can be found in its own exhibit in the Small Wonders area of the Children’s Trail.

This image was shot in the Kyrgyz lands of the Wakhan Corridor. The intimacy of this everyday life moment, shot inside of a family yurt, is in total contrast with the harsh environment these nomadic tribes live in. On the right we notice a television and a sound console. These tribes live weeks away from any village by foot. In spite of being located at an altitude of 4,300 meters in one of the most remote areas of Afghanistan they are equipped with solar panels, satellite dishes and cellphones. Ancestral ways of living, with touches of modernity.

I was sent one of Twelve South’s “BookBook”...

I was sent one of Twelve South’s “BookBook” wallet/iPhone cases last week and I’ve been spending the weekend checking it out. The results are in, and I have to say I’m very happy with it.

For any of you who haven’t seen pictures of this online, it’s basically a leather iPhone case with a front cover flap that doubles as a wallet. And the whole thing is done (very convincingly I might add) in the style of an old book. The case is sturdy and well made, it’s easy to hold, and it’s small so it can fit into any pocket that you’d normally put your phone into. The phone’s entire front area is exposed so you can use it without having to take it out (and you get to have the fun experience of making people think you’re talking to a pocket sized edition of the collected works of let’s say Shelley, which is just fantastic). There is an exposed section on the bottom that allows you to plug your phone in without having to take it out of the case. (“Why yes, I always plug my books into the electrical socket; I feel it invigorates them.”) The wallet section has four card pockets including a clear-front one for your ID.

Be aware that the BookBook wallet is very clearly made for the iPhone (which comes as no surprise since Twelve South is very clear about their making Apple-oriented accessories). Anything larger than an iPhone won’t really fit into the pocket (although I’ve tested with some smaller items and they stay securely so long as either the top/bottom or the sides fit snugly). Fortunately, that is the only point of concern that I was able to find with this item.

So, final reckoning? Twelve South’s BookBook case is wonderful and I highly recommend it. Even if you don’t want to use it for your phone, it makes a nifty-looking wallet for the eccentric book-lover. So go check it out. If you like it, get it. It rocks.

Also, go check out Twelve South’s other Apple accessories on their website. They have cool stuff.
