FROM THE SWING FICTION FEATURE FRIDAY: A Time to Kill

by Evan David

Christopher Ronald Templeton just thinks it’s another day at the office. But he finds out reality is about to shift in a way he never anticipated.

This delightful and humorous short story was trippy in the best kind of way and took me in a direction I didn’t anticipate.

Ben Avery edited this diverse, edgy, eclectic, thrilling, masterful anthology inspired by Ecclesiastes 3.

Monday Morning Washing in His Word

2 Chronicles 26

Teenage Uzziah,

King heir

52 years,

Leads Jerusalem

Set himself,

As God-seeker

In obedience,

God prospers

Wall-breaker,

Strength increaser

Tower-builder,

Cistern-hewer

Uzziah provided,

Protective gear

Jerusalem’s corners,

War machines

God helped,

Fame spread

But then…

Pride encompassed

Dishonoring God,

Incense offering

Priests warned,

He ignored

Leprous anger,

Shows folly

His exclusion,

Becomes final

Jotham rules,

And governs.

Monday Morning Washing in His Word

2 Chronicles 16

36th year, Asa’s reign

King Baasha, of Israel

Invades Judah, Asa turns

From God, to flesh

with silver, and gold

Temple gifts, purchase safety

Seer Hanani, confronts Asa

Wrong reliance, equals foolishness

“For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the entire earth, to strengthen those whose heart is true to Him.”

Zondervan, NRSV 2010

Asa continues, in foolishness

His rage, brings condemnation

39 years, Asa reigned

Diseased feet, and still

Asa wrongfully, looks manward

Folly-chains, eyes down

If only… eyes up.

From the Swing Fiction Feature Friday: A Time to Die

Robert Mullin’s conclusion hit me by surprise even though I knew the title. A sob may have escaped me at the last sentence, okay, yes, it did.

A wonderfully executed short story, it shares the same setting as the author’s series, Bid the Gods Arise (The Wells of the Worlds).

Monday morning washing in His word.

(Deferred a day)

2 Chronicles 11

This chapter
Causes sighs

He strengthens
When worshipped

Holy, rightly
Prescribed, in

David’s way
But then…

What is utterly disappointing to me about human nature never takes God by surprise.

Not once.

Happy Birthday, Mom!

May your day be full of good things, fond memories, and the joy of birthday greetings!

About the author

BA English, MA Liberal Arts, University Central Oklahoma. 5 books in print, finished a NANOWRIMO 50,000 words challenge, 44th year of marriage to man who edits and creates in his own write.

I am well into my seventies and trusting God to get me through however long He provides. These days I write a lot of poetry and will be assembling a second collection this year for publication.

Born in Oklahoma, grandchild of real pioneers and land runners, I read favorite books multiple times: Salinger, Lewis, Mantel, McCarthy, Berry, Tolstoy, Pasternak, Masters, etc. Influenced by all.

My mind is often a sleepless housing for the thoughts that race through. Words from the first Word keep me going. Living in the Ozarks feeds the soul. Mother, grandmother, great grandmother…strong listener.

To celebrate my mom’s birthday I am hosting a give-away of two of her books.

Seeds & Stems: A Poetic Collection

by Mary Hicks McReynolds

An eclectic collection of poetry penned by the award-winning author, beginning at age 5 through her 72nd year, featuring whimsy, free verse, rhyme, haiku and her own spin on versification. Topics include faith, family, foundations and frivolity, with underlying themes of mortality, human spirit and frailty.

And…

“What the Seven Thunders Uttered” unspools a fragile thread of amity among family members and neighbors wrenched by death, destruction, cruelty, crime and ignorance. In the early days of a new century, a new state is created from twin territories. Its occupants prosper or fail according to the whims of nature and their own choices. When seven distinct calamities try men’s souls, farmer/oilman Benjamin Franklin Reuben chooses not to ignore the signs of divine intervention. While continuously revising his pamphlet on biblical prophecy, he can’t ignore that his faith is being tested. Will it survive the latest storm? Expectations boom among the righteous but the wicked are ever present. Reuben realizes that tribulation amidst tenuous joy is mankind’s lot. Through it all, the pamphleteer seeks to “hurt not the oil or the wine.” But grapes of wrath challenge every fiber of his being and his beliefs.

To enter this Birthday Bookish Give Away just type Happy Birthday, Mary in the comments. I will announce the winner February 16th, 2024!
