Progress

Scientific Proof of Our Unalienable Rights: A Road to Utopia is an intriguing title for a book.  In it Michael T. Takac weaves the concept of unalienable rights from Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence, (life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness) with the Constructal Law of Adrian Bejan:

For a flow system to persist in time (to live) [Life], it must evolve freely [Liberty] such that it provides greater access [the pursuit of] to its currents [Happiness (positive feedback)].

The square b...

Peak Stupidity

U.S.A. -The citizens elected you to office, but now your decisions screwed up the local economy. Working Americans left your city to find jobs. You replaced those voters with illegal aliens. After all, you didn’t want your political district hollowed out and eliminated. When you read the papers, or listen outside at night, you’re reminded that gangs shoot about 10 people every night.  So what do you do?

If you’re a Chicago politician, you blame something else, and anyone else, but yourself.

C...

The Civil War Is at Hand

Even though Fox News gave him the boot, George Will’s signature trait — pretentiousness — is alive and well.  In a recent column in the Washington Post titled “Vote against the GOP this November,” Will outdid himself with a whole new level of pretentiousness.  One gets the distinct impression that his greatest thrill in life is coming up with words that most people have never heard of.

True, his pretentiousness is phony and obnoxious.  True, he has become a caricature of the infantile whiners...

It’s About Resisting Tyranny

Right now, the anti-gun zealots are preoccupied with so-called “assault rifles.” They’re doing everything they can to gin up support for a ban, hoping that a weak-spined majority in Congress will “bow to the will of the people” if they can just get enough support and hold onto it for a long enough period of time.

One of their favorite arguments, however, is that “no one needs an AR-15.” They usually then call it a “weapon of war.”

As gun folks, we tend to take issue with the whole “weapon of...

Faceprint

A creepy footnote to the shooting in Maryland yesterday. Apparently, the identity of the shooter – who had no ID on him, refused to give his name and had “obscured” his fingerprints – was determined via the use of facial recognition software.

An NBC news story about the incident mentions this fairly casually and without comment:

“Senior law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation told NBC News that Ramos had been identified through the use of facial recognition software. The sources...

Charles Krauthammer, Neocon

Charles Krauthammer, famed Fox News “all-star,” has died at the age of 68.

Understandably enough, his colleagues have been effusive in their eulogizing of the man who has long been regarded as a sage of the conservative movement.  Even while he lived, and long before he would be diagnosed with the disease that would end his life, no one in the Big Conservative media, even when they disagreed with him (over, say, Donald Trump), would argue with Krauthammer without first qualifying their remark...

Build a Wall, Make Africa Pay for It

The EU meets today in a futile attempt to solve a near impossible problem. A page from Trump’s playbook might help. Given the incessant bickering between EU countries over migration issues, it’s time to think outside the box. Here is the 5-Point Dilemma. Germany Merkel’s CDU: Seek a consensus solution under existing EU rules. Germany Seehofer’s CSU: Turn them back at the border (i.e. Send them back to Italy through Austria) Italy Five Star and the League: Change the “Dublin Rules” which s...

Suicide by Barbarian

Around the world, very few people are capable of wrapping their heads around the European reaction to the migrant crisis. On the side of the migrants, we have avid displays of barbarism, fanaticism and aggression; on the side of the Europeans, we have abject fear of appearing… intolerant. In an out-of-control situation where we would expect people to organize, protest, put up road blocks and vote en masse for nationalist parties, we are instead subjected to the ridiculous spectacle of meek, e...

Erdogan Scores Another Triumph

Few phobias run deeper in Europe than the fear and hatred of Turks.  For at least six hundred years, Europe was locked in innumerable wars with first Seljuk, then Ottoman Turks.  My big St Bernard is a descendant of dogs bred to attack Arab and Turkish raiders coming over Switzerland’s St Bernard Pass.

Today, by contrast, there are some 10 million ethnic Turks in Europe, most of whom came in past decades as guest laborers, prized for their hard work, honesty and reliability.

Turkey joined NAT...
